Storia Di Musica #311 - Emily Remler, East To Wes, 1988

Il filo che lega le storie di musica di Febbraio me lo ha dato la radio: qualche giorno fa in un programma mattutino di Virgin Radio, alla domanda della presentatrice "cosa vorresti fare per diventare famoso?" una ascoltatrice ha risposto "vorrei diventare una virtuosa della chitarra, perchè non ve ne sono di famose". La presentatrice ha ribattuto che non era affatto vero, ma l'unico nome che le venne in mente al momento è quello di Sister Rosetta Tharpe, cantante e chitarrista statunitense, pioniera della musica gospel e conosciuta anche con il nomignolo di Madrina del Rock'n'Roll: sulle qualità storiche e tecniche di Rosetta Tharpe niente da dire, ma non è tra i primi nomi che vengono in mente pensando alla chitarra rock in generale. Il mio spirito da piccolo filologo musicale tende a dire che l'ascoltatrice avesse ragione, cioè che vi sono pochissime chitarriste famose, che allo stesso tempo non vuol dire che non vi siano state straordinarie chitarriste nella storia della musica. Per questo, ricordando che in questa rubrica già si è parlato di chitarriste (la sublime Joni Mitchell, le Runaways di Joan Jett e Lita Ford tra le altre), le storie di musica di questo mese verteranno su grandiose chitarriste.

Per iniziare ho scelto una storia emblematica di uno dei problemi di essere musiciste in un mondo, quello della musica pop, che è sempre stato per lo più maschilista: "Così tanti leader di gruppi mi hanno detto in faccia che non potevano assumermi perché ero una donna", lo diceva, in una intervista al magazine People nel 1982 una grandiosa musicista, Emily Remler. Originaria del New Jersey, la sua vita cambia quando ha 10 anni: al fratello maggiore venne regalata una chitarra, una Gibson Es 330 rossa, che Emily ogni tanto strimpellava. Si capì subito che riusciva a memorizzare i suoni e le veniva naturale suonarla, tanto che anni dopo fu ammessa al prestigioso Berklee College of Music di Boston, che è la scuola di musica più grande del mondo, i cui illustri ex alunni hanno vinto oltre 300 Grammy Awards. Si diploma a 18 anni, si appassiona al jazz e inizia a suonare nei locali. Nel 1978 va a New Orleans, dà lezioni, suona in pubblico in ogni occasione che trova, si mette deliberatamente in situazioni che la spingono a dare il massimo e a migliorarsi. Fa di tutto per incontrare quanti più musicisti può. Tra questi, nel 1978, incrocia Herb Ellis, che diventerà il suo mentore (gli dedicherà un bellissimo brano, di chitarra solo, di cui parlerò tra poco). Grazie a lui inizia ad essere una richiestissima sessionista, pubblica il primo disco da solista, Firefly del 1981 (in copertina una sua splendida foto con la chitarra rossa del fratello, strumento che non abbandonerà mai), partecipa alle musiche di un grande musical, Sophisticated Ladies, con le musiche di Duke Ellington e tra le cose più belle che vive c'è la sua partecipazione ai tour di Astrud Gilberto che le aprono le porte delle musiche sudamericane e caraibiche. Nel 1981 sposa il pianista Monty Alexander, con il quale farà un favoloso tour insieme prima di divorziare nel 1984. Remler è una grandiosa musicista, con un senso innato del tempo e della ritmica, e ha un carattere forte e lucido: nella stessa intervista a People disse "Posso sembrare una ragazzina carina del New Jersey. Ma dentro sono un uomo nero ben piazzato di 50 anni con un gran pollice, come Wes Montgomery».

E proprio il grande chitarrista di Indianapolis è il faro della musica di Emily. Gli dedica questo disco, del 1988, suonando insieme a tre colossi colossi, Hank Jones al piano (uno dei grandi pianisti del jazz, e passato alla storia anche perchè suonava lui il piano di accompagnamento quando Marylin Monroe cantò Happy Birthday Mr President nel 1962 a JFK), Buster Williams al contrabasso (che suonò nel gruppo di Herbie Hancock e nel gruppo Sphere specializzato nelle musiche di Thelonious Monk) e Marvin "Smitty" Smith, come lei allievo della Berklee e batterista per grandi musicisti, nonchè batterista della band dello show di Jay Leno per 14 anni. East To Wes è un tributo atipico, perchè Remler non riprende in toto brani famosi di Montgomery, ma ne sceglie alcuni che suona "come li avrebbe suonati lui", con la famosa maestria del suo pollice: leggenda vuole che Montgomery, che di giorno lavorava in fabbrica e la sera imparava a suonare la chitarra, per non disturbare moglie e vicini non suonava con il plettro, ma con il pollice, una delle caratteristiche che resero il suo suono unico e distinguibile per sempre.

Nel disco prodotto da Carl Jefferson, fondatore della Concord Records che era specializzata in famose chitarre jazz, Remler sceglie un repertorio memorabile, composto da standard e da tre sue composizioni. Tra gli standard, riprese spettacolari di Hot House di Tad Cameron (è stata la prima chitarrista a proporre il brano per chitarra jazz), uno dei picchi dell'era be-bop, Daahoud di Clifford Brown (una delle grandi promesse del jazz, morto nel 1956 in un incidente stradale a soli 25 anni), Snowfall, uno dei più grandi standard del jazz, scritta nel 1941 da Claude Thornhill e una ripresa di Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise dal musical New Moon di Sigmund Romberg (musiche) e Oscar Hammerstein II (testo). C'è anche una versione strumentale di Sweet Georgie Fame di Blossom Dearie, che nella sua versione originale aveva il testo scritto da Sandra Harris, e la canzone è una dedica alla cantante jazz inglese Georgie Fame, una canzone scritta da donne per una donna. Tra le proprie composizioni, tre gemme: Blues For Herb, dedicata all'amicizia con Herb Harris suo mentore, una Ballad For A Music Box e la canzone, delicato e sentito omaggio al suo mito, East To Wes. Il disco è un gioiello, consacrato anche dalla critica, uno degli apici creativi del talento di Remler.

Un talento che si è sempre scontrato con un grave problema: la sua dipendenza dall'eroina. Dipendenza che fu la causa, drammatica, di un attacco di cuore mentre era in tour in Australia nel 1990 che si porta via un talento della chitarra jazz a soli 32 anni. Una chitarrista fenomenale, che amava dire: Quando suono, non so se sono una ragazza, o un ragazzo, un cane, un gatto o altro. Sto solo suonando. Quando scendo dal palco, è lì che la gente mi ricorda che sono una donna.

This collection of essays investigates histories in the ancient world and the extent to which the producers and consumers of those histories believed them to be true. Ancient Greek historiographers repeatedly stressed the importance of truth to history; yet they also purported to believe in myth, distorted facts for nationalistic or moralizing purposes, and omitted events that modern audiences might consider crucial to a truthful account of the past. Truth and History in the Ancient World explores a pluralistic concept of truth – one in which different versions of the same historical event can all be true – or different kinds of truths and modes of belief are contingent on culture.

Beginning with comparisons between historiography and aspects of belief in Greek tragedy, chapters include discussions of historiography through the works of Herodotus, Xenophon, and Ktesias, as well as Hellenistic and later historiography, material culture in Vitruvius, and Lucian’s satire. Rather than investigate whether historiography incorporates elements of poetic, rhetorical, or narrative techniques to shape historical accounts, or whether cultural memory is flexible or manipulated, this volume examines pluralities of truth and belief within the ancient world – and consequences for our understanding of culture, ancient or otherwise.

Lisa Irene Hau is Lecturer in Classics at the University of Glasgow, UK. She has published articles on Greek historiography, moralising and narrative technique, and she is working on a book on moral didacticism in Greek historiography. She is co-editor of Beyond the Battlefields: New Perspectives on Warfare and Society in the Graeco-Roman World (2008).

Ian Ruffell is Lecturer in Classics at the University of Glasgow, UK. He is author of Politics and Anti-Realism in Athenian Old Comedy: the Art of the Impossible (2011) and Aeschylus: Prometheus Bound (2012)."

Per sempre è composto da tanti ora. Così scriveva Emily Dickinson,e mentre ieri  camminavo  sotto il cielo del tramonto pensando a queste sue parole ho visto una giovane coppia alla finestra di un edificio storico,stavano ballando sulle note di una canzone che le mie orecchie non sono riuscite a catturare,lei scoppia a ridere e subito il ragazzo la segue.Mi ritrovo a sorridere anche io,e penso a quanto sia strano che certe cose riescono a raggiungerti anche da lontano,semplicemente guardandole. Mi chiedo se Emily abbia pensato a loro: una coppia così innamorata da non pensare al domani,ma tutta tesa a sfruttare al meglio il presente che ha davanti. Poco più avanti vedo un bambino e probabilmente suo nonno giocare a calcio nei pressi di un campo illuminato.Il bambino sta esultando per la vittoria ottenuta,ignaro del fatto che suo nonno perderebbe altre mille volte se ciò significasse vederlo sorridere.Perchè a volte alle persone non dispiace perdere per coloro che amano.Forse Emily ha pensato anche a lui,a quel vecchio che non sa quanti anni di vita gli restano da vivere e non se ne preoccupa fintanto che i suoi giorni sono scanditi dal sorriso del suo piccolo campione. Potrei non riuscire mai a sapere il vero senso delle sue parole,ma posso dire con certezza che il mondo è un posto terribile e crudele,ma solo una cosa rende tutto sopportabile ed è l’amore..

#9 Estathé Ice al Limone

(Prima di iniziare la lettura: probabilmente tra le cose che più fanno partire una discussione tra persone italiane è la preferenza di gusto dell'estathé. Anni di lotte, urla, cazzotti e soprattutto giudizi verso chi la pensa diversamente da noi. Confido di non dover leggere insulti rivolti verso me o terzi e di una generale educazione nell'esporre, in caso, la propria preferenza o punto di vista. Grazie.)

Con delle temperature così elevate il minimo che potevo fare era una recensione sul primo ghiacciolo della rubrica! Benvenuto Estathé Ice 👏🏻

La Ferrero ormai da un paio di estati ha deciso, come già abbiamo ben visto, di allargare il suo impero anche tra gli scaffali del banco frigo. Il primo esperimento con Estathé è stata la proposta di un ibrido tra un calippo e il brick classico che, una volta messo in freezer, poi si gustava ghiacciato. Dall'anno scorso, invece, ha poi deciso di proporre direttamente la versione ghiacciolo che si può trovare nei due gusti più classici (limone o pesca) e menta e lime.

Io ho optato, visto la mia netta preferenza (vi vedo.) al gusto limone. Al primissimo assaggio l'unica cosa che ho sentito in bocca è stata una presenza troppo elevata di dolcezza. Continuando le varie slinguazzate e ciucciate (pure qui, per favore, educazione.) l'elevata dolcezza si conferma la protagonista di questo stecco. Il ghiacciolo in un primo momento risulta molto solido: non tende a sciogliersi rovinosamente e nonostante le varie ciucciate non ha il comportamento tipico da ghiacciolo acqua e sciroppo, per il quale se succhi troppo tiri via tutto il gusto e il ghiacciolo sbiadisce, rimanendo quasi solo ghiaccio. Il che è un grossissimo punto a favore se solo il gusto fosse buono. L'Estathé è una bibita molto dolce e zuccherata e siamo d'accordo, ma questa dolcezza è contrastata dall'amaro dato dall'infuso di tè che rimane in bocca e di cui, nel ghiacciolo, non vi è traccia. Successivamente, nonostante il fondo fosse ancora ben solido e non abbia sgocciolato nemmeno una volta, mi si è spaccato in due durante una ciucciata.

La terza foto che vedete è un esperimento che ho fatto, ovvero un ghiacciolo fatto direttamente con un Estathé in brick. La differenza è sostanziale: non ha un gusto particolarmente accentuato ma non ha nemmeno come unica caratteristica la dolcezza. Si comporta, rispetto a quanto detto sopra, molto di più come un vero ghiacciolo acqua e sciroppo: gocciola un bel po' e se si succhia molto rimaniamo con del ghiaccio e basta sullo stecco.

Questo ghiacciolo non mi ha minimamente convinta: se sono al mare e muoio di caldo ho bisogno di qualcosa di rinfrescante e dissetante, non una bomba di zuccheri. Non oso immaginare quello alla pesca, con un gusto ancora più dolce di quello al limone. Forse si salva menta e lime? Non sono curiosa di saperlo. Se volete un consiglio: prendete dell'estathé e fatevelo in casa.

Questo non significa che non si può amare tutta la vita una persona, ma non è detto che questo debba accadere sempre o costantemente soltanto perché viene promesso. Se il sentimento è puro, deve contenere in sé la libertà, non solo di amare chiunque, ma di cessare di amare quando quel sentimento si è trasformato in qualcos'altro.

Perché la libertà viene prima dell'amore, e se non si è liberi di amare come ci viene meglio, amore non è. Si è semplicemente prigionieri degli schemi dell'etica e della morale, e sopratutto della paura di essere se stessi e dunque di essere giudicati per ciò che si è".

Concordo. L'amore vero, che può essere eterno, esiste. Ma non può essere promesso, giurato e predefinito. Semplicemente accade, momento dopo momento. Come disse Emily Dickinson: Per sempre è composto da tanti "ora". Ed è qualcosa che trascende l'ego: origina direttamente dalle Anime. Col sostegno della mente, dei corpi e delle personalità, ovviamente 😉 Siamo fatti di Spirito, e siamo fatti di carne e sangue, attraverso i quali l'anima agisce e interagisce.

Resto comunque dell'idea che la Relazione d'Amore vada PROTETTA e PRESERVATA preventivamente attraverso gesti, azioni, intenti, pensieri ed energie. Nulla vive di rendita, nemmeno l'amore, e come tale va nutrito e coltivato nel tempo. Se scegliamo il mordi e fuggi, stiamo scappando. Se intraprendiamo un Percorso col nostro Amato, stiamo costruendo. E, pur senza obblighi o pretese, si può creare stabilità, si può stringere un Accordo, in Armonia, Amore e Complicità, finché le Anime saranno d'accordo.

Mi è stato detto che avrei fatto dei lavori e dei percorsi per coppie. Chissà…

Sinceramente io credo nella Coppia, intesa come Unione di polarità e intenti, come Accordo, Alleanza, come Scelta. E credo sia uno dei Doni più belli e veri della Vita. A saperlo riconoscere e valorizzare. Il Rapporto di Coppia è un rapporto di Complicità, che lungi dal limitarci e comprimerci, ci fa espandere nella Gioia©.
