read Connie Willis's Doomsday Book around two years ago and now I'm reading To Say Nothing of the Dog, very much enjoying it but GOD its such tonal whiplash to go from a book that utterly wrecked me, broke my fucking heart, made me inconsolably sob, to a book in which the main character gets stuck in a turnstile because he has the time travel equivalent of jet lag. to say nothing of the dog is like what if we were both time travelers and we flirted in the victorian era while causing time paradoxes haha jk jk unless? whereas doomsday book is like. what if you had the most harrowing possible experience and were viscerally confronted with the fragility, tragedy, and heartbreaking beauty of human life. like they are both good but they are not the same.

Me whenever I remember the hardcore environmental subject, taught by one of the toughest professors at uni, then remember how RT made Logan an "environmentalist"
How the fuck one (1) guy riding a bicycle is going to do anything against air pollution? And considering how intelligent and well-educated Logan has always been(yes, always. He had plenty of problems at school, but none of them were with grades,AFAIK),he'd have realized it was merely an empty virtue signaling gesture. One would think Logan could help clean beaches and other places in Neptune(small scale, but still something with real results - making the city prettier and healthier),petition for proper disposal and treatment of residues(in all scales, not only in the industrial one),be invested in basic sanitation and water supply(those affect the poor disproportionally - see,Noir-relevant),engage in environmental education(bonus points if he gets to mentor troubled youth and take them under his wing - just like the professor did with him). Young!Logan might have plenty of flaws, but he got shit done.
Logan Echolls became what he hated the most - a virtue-signalling shithead who half-asses good deeds to stroke his own ego. Also,a State-Sanctioned Mercenary. Not very different from the vapid Hollywood he hated so much. I know the Doylist explanation was simply incompetence from RT,but can anyone think of an Watsonian one?

GIRL......................... suspension of disbelief I know but.
Obviously you can pick out a BUNCH of the dragons as that Is an ongoing trope (dragons aging differently than humans, so they can look younger than they "actually are") (also while I did try to avoid including them to make them more comparable to Nino, I think Flayn can fit in either category for the purposes of The Context -- esp cause her dragon blood is meant to be secret)
Not only do we have Heroes skewing younger (a lot fitting into another trope of What If There Was A Baby Sister) we also have Baby Banner. Where the whole point is they are baby.
LIKE....... maybe I'm speaking way too soon and maybe the whole point IS this will backfire LMFAO, but it IS absurd to be presented with her art (which, def still looks youthful!) and having her say yeah I can pass as a kidnapped child. Which COULD be true! But also what do you mean no one is going to know you're a part of the Heroes. Why is no one fighting her on this. Not even including the dragons there are like a handful of Heroes who fit into her exact vibe. Some even MORE baby than her.

Every one says Rocky Horror is Eddie’s favorite and don’t get me wrong it’s a amazing movie and it was his favorite… that is until Heathers came out. This boy loved that movie so much he had the whole thing memorized word for word, scene for scene.

TRAGIC HORROR TROPES.
— the final girl.
the final girl comes out the other end of trauma alive – or, they were supposed to. honestly, you're not so sure you're really alive anymore. you saw the same hurt take those you were closest to while everyone paraded your bruises and bravery, as strength, as if you're the hero. and it hurts. you're tired and you don't want to have to be brave anymore. whatever you went through, it changed so much of who you were that you're still getting used to the person you see in the mirror. you didn't have a say in any of it, but you're here now, and that's gotta count for something. you'll make it count for something. but first, you need to let yourself find rest.
— the witch.
people need to find blame wherever they can; it makes the bad things in their life feel just a touch more bearable. the witches are so often blamed for the curses others are under that no one even questions it anymore. you point to a supposed witch and everyone else prepares the stake, no matter their innocent. to be born and believed a witch is one of the worst curses of them all – you can have friends and family, but there's always a dread that someday, someone will point to you, and everyone you once trusted will throw you into the pyre. if you're here, reading this, you've probably been burned before. and i don't blame you for wanting to hide away, to really become the witch they all say you are, to curse them. but to be a witch is to brush your fingertips over the bark of a tree and watch it grow a touch stronger. keep that in mind.
— the vampire.
it is the loneliest day of a vampire's life, the first time they look into a mirror and see their reflection missing. drinking blood sucks too, don't get me wrong, but as a vampire you had to learn to hide from the sunlight, from your family, all your friends, because you were unavoidably different now and you didn't know how to explain that to them in a way they would understand. you could get stranger's blood in bursts, but what is life when you can't know someone for longer than the night lasts? you left everything behind because it was easier than trying to tell them. i just hope you know you're not the only vampire out there, and that there exist people who will understand your situation without a word. they'll sit with you in the dark for as long as you'll need them to.
— the mummy.
here's the thing about mummies – why the hell is anyone opening up their tombs? you were resting. you were peaceful. but someone intruded, barged in and broke down your walls and stole all the parts of yourself that you cherished, and then blamed you for being angry. blamed you for chasing them down no matter how fast they ran and how many obstacles they put in your path. and you know what? they deserve your rage. they destroyed something sacred. they didn't give a shit, and they wouldn't ever have lamented their actions had it not been for you – the real hero – getting up and showing them that they don't have the right to destroy and pillage as they please. that is your home. that is your body. nothing they do can take that from you. if not for you, they probably would've kept breaking into tombs and disturbing restful lives without a second thought. you won't be repaid for your good, but i hope you know you are a saviour in your own right.

Hot Take:
Divergent would be a much better series if the concept of "divergent" was representative of neurodivergency rather than a balance of multiple favorable traits.
Like, not fitting in to societal categories, not abiding by societal rules, rebelling against an imposed classification system, cannot be controlled, etc.
All that sounds like to me is an autistic person who doesn't understand societal hierarchy, an ADHD person who cannot for the life of them pick a single trait to define themselves forever, or the opposite and hyperfixates on said trait, etc.
Why create such a concept about not fitting into a societal category, with divergent IN THE NAME, only to focus on how some people can be kind and brave and honest at the same time, and that such a thing is an outlier from the norm when we KNOW that humans are much more complex than a single defining quality?
I just think it would have been more interesting rather than a copy/paste of every YA trope of the era.
Ted Talk over.

I had such a weird, random, minor thing happen to me today!
so, there's this book I remember reading as a kid, circa 2005 or so. it was a fantasy book about a boy who was the son of an evil sorceress, and I distinctly remember that it took place all in a snowy winter-bound country and that snow and winter was a recurring theme. BUT I couldn't remember the title, the author, or even what the cover looked like.
And I've been looking and looking for this book! Not necessarily for any specific reason, just because I was nostalgic and curious, but I absolutely could not find it. I spent hours and hours scouring the internet, looking on all those sites and forums etc where people try to find the names of books they remember reading, but absolutely no luck. I had basically given up, it seemed to just be too obscure of a book and no one remembered it any more other than me, alas.
Then today I was in a used bookstore and my eye fell on the spine of this book and I just instantly was like. Wait. Holy shit. Is that it??? Like just the font was instantly familiar, even though up till the moment I saw it I couldn't remember what this book looked like. And I picked it up and read the summary and was like oh yeah, 100% for sure this is the same book!
It just seems like such a bizarre, random twist of chance! That after all this time looking for it, I'd just stumble across it by accident, and that I instantly recognized the cover even though I hadn't been able to remember it at all until that moment! Its just such a strange coincidence! So obviously I bought it and will re-read. It's called Snow-Walker by Catherine Fisher. It has terrible reviews on Goodreads lol so who knows if I'll even still like it, but I just think its so cool and random that I found it like that.

Big Ethel Energy S2 Episode 38
I'm doing a quick and dirty version of my usual posts because honestly there's not been much for me to comment on, but I will go back to the previous episodes I've read (31-37) and see if there's anything to comment on, but you know me. I'm honestly just here to see what this webcomic is doing to Jughead.
My summary for this episode: This comic has only done one thing right. One. And it's Gilbert and Veronica.
EX-FUCKING-SCUSES.
I'm bored of the jealousy plotline that is clearly leading to their break-up.
I hate how they are ramping up the dislikability of Moose Mason. (He's still not my Moose). Like seriously? Telling her that she's "playing dumb" and that she's "ridiculous"? Annoying.
Also "twisting" is something this webcomic is SO GOOD AT. :/ :/ Though seriously it does twist words constantly. That's why misunderstandings are its number one way of creating conflict and no other way. It's always misunderstandings and now also jealousy. Bleh.
Wow and Ethel's being terrible too. Not as surprising but wow. For a writer you would think that you know how specifying that Seth is attractive would hurt and allude to the fact that you also find Seth attractive. Ethel's instigating.
Okay, the panel after this Moose agrees that this does bother him and I honestly wasn't expecting it. But also the way he goes on about Seth's qualities is doing the thing where other characters are used as mouthpieces to prop up other characters in a way that doesn't feel organic. It's like I'm being spoon fed what to think of them. Describing other characters this way is normal in other works, but I don't know why Big Ethel Energy's way of doing this feels off in some way.
Alright, now for the most interesting thing that happened this episode:
I have absolutely no authority to comment on autism or Gilbert's character, but I think I can say that it felt well alluded to.
And honestly seemed very cute and romantic confession that goes on between Gilbert and Veronica.
Like really this just warmed my cold and dead heart that I have when it comes to this webcomic. You've done one thing right webcomic. One.

"Freddie, is it true that the song I want to break free is dedicated to the gay?"
"Noo not at all, not at all! *frowns and shakes his head* That song... Let's start over, the song has been written by John Deacon, and -well- he's a happily married man you know, with about four children. I don't think that's where he got the message, it's got nothing to do with gay people at all. It's basically just about everybody... Somebody who has a very top life and he just wants to break free from whatever problems he's got. It's got nothing to do with the gay thing, besides it's not my song anyway, John wrote it."
Interview with Gloria Maria at Copacabana, January 1985

Brain still soup but like. I think making one or both (or more!) characters involved in relationships with each other aromantic makes the dynamic soooooo much more compelling. Because if you remove romance as a motivator, you really get down to the nitty-gritty as to WHY that character is seeking out/involved in those relationships in the first place. Whether that relationship involves romantic factors or is more of a queer platonic thing. Much to think about....

alright I've not seen Stranger Things so my reading could be VERY off here, but there's something quite interesting to think about Nancy Wheeler as what Veronica Sawyer might have been in a different genre
