Had a first today. We had a client with his two dogs come in for a regular scheduled appointment, annual exams with boosters, specifically a rattlesnake vaccine. I've had plenty of people request the rattlesnake vaccine (I work in Southern Oregon basically in wine country) or the Lyme vaccine but it's very rarely used.

Me: It looks like they're due for all their core vaccines, would you like to booster those as well today?

Client: Oh, no thank you.

Me(thinking he misheard me): So both dogs are due for their RABIES VACCINE as well as DHLP, another core vaccine for dogs, would you like to have us give those today?

Client: No thanks. We don't really believe in that stuff. Just the rattlesnake vaccine for today.

Me(flabbergasted): So you're declining the rabies, distemper, hepatitis, and leptospirosis vaccines, but you want the rattlesnake vaccine?

Client: Yes, please thank you.

Showing off the bot

This is my vet assistant bot illumi, he’s a newer model so he gots some lovely upgrades.

here are some info to know about him:

he goes by he/him pronouns and is a Male body model. 

He is sentient and has many features to help him navigate his job, he is very strong to help with the more exotic animals that come in for a check up. 

His tail has a eye on it that allows him to see what is behind him, he has a robotic nervous system that allows him to feel things and a adjustable body temperature gauge so he's not cold to the touch! 

He has a fake heart beat module in his chest to calm animals down when he picks them up, some animals find it comforting. 

He has a variety of expressions and he even has a security mode for intruders. He is protective of the animals in his care and the employees as well, he is a expert of most animals and he knows a variety of medical procedures to better help the Vets and nurses of the clinic. 

He is waterproof and his outfit can be changed to a variety of different outfits. 

He is one of my absolute favorite bots and I can’t help but want to show him off, if you got questions about him feel free to ask but let’s keep questions appropriate :3

Ah the joys of working in the vet field. Got my bite cherry popped.

4 month old Boston terrier came in yesterday with labored breathing. X-rays showed pneumonia in the lungs and a very narrow airway. Today he came in to be put on oxygen, because the owner refused to go to the emergency room to do that last night.

We spent two hours trying to save this puppy but he died in my arms. I'm pissed off because we should have euthanized him. He died in agony at a very young age. The owner let us know later this afternoon that she's getting ANOTHER puppy from the same litter. THE SAME FUCKING LITTER.

I feel like I just got whiplash...

So our full-time assistant caught whooping cough from a family member she lives with, and now I have symptoms as well (thankfully relatively mild so far for all of us, since we're vaccinated! Unfortunately, like the canine Bordetella vaccine, it isn't super great at entirely preventing the disease, but it does decrease severity and secondary complications). Given my asthma, my RNP has gone ahead and started me on an antibiotic and prednisone just in case, since the test takes ~2-4 days for results. (And I'm all wheezy so I need the steroid either way). This also means I'll be contagious for a shorter period if it is indeed whooping cough.*

I do love that the staff at my doctor's office are aware of what vet med is like because they were doing the public health questionnaire stuff to determine if it counted as close exposure since we're just coworkers, and as soon as they heard where I work and what role, they were all "yeah that definitely counts as close exposure." "Y'all are all up on each other" 🤣

*For whooping cough, if you get treated with antibiotics, you're only contagious for 5 days from the first full day of antibiotic treatment, but without antibiotic treatment you're contagious for up to 21 days after symptoms first appear O.O

I've worked at four different vet clinics in my career, only ONE of them saw rabbits. The number of veterinarians in my area who will see a rabbit are getting smaller each year.

With Easter fast approaching with its spiked rabbit sales and subsequent spiked rabbit abandonment rates, I thought I’d use my powers for good by spreading some information I think everyone should know before they get their first bunny. Another important thing to remember, redirect mouthing/biting with an appropriate toy/chew toy/etc. When I rescued my cat Raider, he had been taught to bite and nibble as part of playing. It took years to correct, but anytime we tried to disengage or ignore him, he didn't always seem to understand and thought it was an advanced game of "keep away." When Raider would bite my hands/feet, I would hand him his favorite catnip kicker toy. This way he still gets to chew on something, as cats can sometimes bite when they are excited and overstimulated. Cats tend to be much harder to correct, but if you communicate in a way they understand, you can rehabilitate cat behavior.
