Took me until about halfway through college before I realized “study” means “play with the material in a variety of ways until you understand it” and not just “read the assigned chapters and do the homework” and I think that probably should have been discussed at some point prior to that.

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.

Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.

So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.

Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

Unrelated, pessimistic, personal and hateful of me: but If anyone here, as a woman, has had women in their family teach the daughters to seek out more in life; that is the biggest privilege. It’s even more of a privilege than education itself. The deepest cut patriarchy places on the world is that it infests women with internalised misogyny to a point that they work against their own daughters and sisters. They make them miserable, they thwart their efforts. It’s coming from a place of already having the avenue to study, but no one has damaged a girl’s prospects more than her mother or sister. The worst thing patriarchy does is turn us against each other. That’s how it wins. This is a problem that feigns the appearance of a resolution, it still very much exists in microcosms and damages lives. It shouldn’t be forgotten that we’re still suffering consequences every day despite the freedoms we have. Learning is a privilege, im glad to be here and get to do any of it; but the victory isn��t entirely one with the interests of feminism in general.

It’s a privilege to study, many women around the world are barred from this human right: to read, write and learn. Be grateful anytime your pen touches paper, or you are learning theorems developed by intelligent, hardworking men and women from ages ago.

It’s a pleasure and a privilege to learn. Not only is it a privilege to study, but you should be aiming and striving to take science, medicine, law, philosophy, art further than the marker we have reached. It’s a comforting thought to think, from your work generations of humanity down the line will benefit.

How many brilliant women were in the shadows of amazing feats of science and technology and life changing patents? Contribute while you can. If you pour into knowledge - it will pour back into you.

one of the biggest things I can advocate for (in academia, but also just in life) is to build credibility with yourself. It’s easy to fall into the habit of thinking of yourself as someone who does things last minute or who struggles to start tasks. people will tell you that you just need to build different habits, but I know for me at least the idea of ‘habit’ is sort of abstract and dehumanizing. Credibility is more like ‘I’ve done this before, so I know I can do it, and more importantly I trust myself to do it’. you set an assignment goal for the day and you meet it, and then you feel stronger setting one the next day. You establish a relationship with yourself that’s built on confidence and trust. That in turn starts to erode the barrier of insecurity and perfectionism and makes it easier to start and finish tasks. reframing the narrative as a process of building credibility makes it easier to celebrate each step and recognize how strong your relationship with yourself can become

Trying to make it through. Didn't go to my CompSec exam, I'll go on the second date, but in the back of my mind I'm thinking I made a huge mistake in prioritizing this project over everything.

Studying is about studying.

Studying is about being familiar with the topic. Studying is absorbing the material. Studying is understanding the lesson.

I don't understand what people mean by "isn't always aesthetic". It never was or should be about aesthetic.

All the pretty aesthetic is fun and nice, and I do them to. But that's not the point of studying.

studying isn't always aesthetic, and that is totally ok.

not every study session is accompanied by a cool bright matcha and and a perfect messy bun. not all of your notes will be written in beautiful looped cursive and perfectly highlighted.

sometimes the only way you can study is in your pyjamas, sometimes the only place you are sitting down long enough is the bus, sometimes your notecards are tatty and ripped.

you don't always have to be perfectly aesthetic, let go of your performative notes, write notes that help you.

wear things that are comfy and easy to concentrate in.

be gentle with yourself, learn what works for you and stick to it.

had the day off from work, so i focused on other forms of productivity - i meal prepped a bunch, got about halfway through my book, and took a much-needed nap. i feel a bit guilty for not making any progress on my academic/work-related projects, but am trying to remind myself that every form of productivity is important for a balanced life.

my grades were released yesterday, so it feels as though i can finally take a deep breath and relax from spring term. i wasn't expecting any surprises, but it's still nice to see the results of my hard work. plus, i'm now officially a senior in college!
