Mine are vexes. Funky little dudes, generally underutilised and under appreciated. My main pronoun set is even vex/vexself, though to be fair I don’t remember if my love of the mob or the pronouns came first. I’m considering making a texture pack to make my allays be vexes in costumes. I made a couple of my own origins (for origin mod), and the only one I actually finished so far is the vex one, despite it being theoretically the worst to do. I just really love vexes.

Being a spy with 32 years of experience and a passion for the work meant that Ninette was something of an expert. Gathering Intel had always been a delight, so many secrets, so many threats, really, you never knew what you were getting into. Oh, and getting close with dangerous criminals yet turning around and backstabbing them as soon as it was necessary was a beloved past-time and something that only got more fun as time went on. But Nins wasn't heartless, no, no, ve genuinely did care for some of these targets, it's just that.. it wasn't actually very hard to sever any and all affections ve felt. All legitimate friendships ceased to have any meaning as soon as Ninette decided  they were over. After a while you just get good at it, I suppose.  

Though, there are these two criminals that ve would never dream of turning in, despite their history of horrific violence and the obvious joy they took from it, ve just couldn't. Nins would protect those idiots with vex life or die trying, and knowing them, it's honestly quite a shock ve hadn't already died because of them. 

It was a terribly risky line of work but it was a thrilling one. You could die or be captured and tortured or be the cause of a loved one's death or a world leader’s, or you could prevail, and accomplish what desperately needed to be done. It's no surprise Ninette’s youngest sister Leal had joined in on the endeavours soon after ve did, no Bellarose would turn down a thrill. Even if they really should. So, ve supposes it makes sense that one of them would eventually turn to crime instead of spy work, it's just the other side of the coin. But it would've been nice of Faye to not give them so much more work to do, protecting them and their stupid decisions. Family is family though, and Ninette’s younger sisters mean more to vex than anything else ever could so ve has little choice but to continue dealing with it. Now, Leal does say that they’ve quit spy work, their wife’s new book providing more than enough for them both, which would be a great relief if Nins believed that Leal would really quit. Or was capable of self preservation. Really, who goes on tv to support their wife during an interview when the entire criminal underground wants them dead? At least that was better than the last stunt Faye pulled... They couldn’t keep giving vex frights like this! Those two were going to give Nins a heart attack one of these days. Genuinely, ve was 53, they all should really calm down and be more careful. 

Ah, but that’s where Ninette got rather hypocritical, “they can’t keep putting themselves in danger like this but I can work undercover in a speakeasy frequented by the worst of the worst, that’s absolutely fine” and, of course, that couldn’t just be it, ve had to go get incredibly chummy with the patrons aswell.  

It was this speakeasy that Nins found vexself at the moment, oddly enough, zoning out. The place would typically be packed by this time and ve would be entertained by the patrons, more than a little drunk, who would typically be embarrassing themselves, starting fights or brazenly admitting their affections to their favourite bartender who would just smile in response. It was more than a little uncomfortable for it to be so quiet. And it had every right to be, if the regulars weren’t present then they were out doing things much worse than just having a meaningless argument or ruining everyone’s livers with their generosity. 

It greatly pained Ninette to be stuck inside instead of going out to see what was happening but if ve was supposed to be just a bartender then ve was going to play that role, even if it went against vex every instinct. Who would be missing tomorrow, ve wondered, who would be arrested, who would be injured, who might be dead? If there were deaths, whose hands were responsible, the police’ or a fellow patron’s? Should ve even be concerned about them? They were criminals after all, awful people, if they had died as retribution for one of their crimes then surely that was a good thing. It would save Nins from having to kill them vexself at a later date too. But, it would be a little lonely if the speakeasy’s numbers never returned to normal, if some regulars were just noticeably gone. Who would overly enthusiastically ask about ve’s day or involve vex in a pointless drinking game or buy a round for whoever could make vex laugh the hardest? If enough of them were captured or killed then there would be no reason for ve to even continue working there, ve be pulled and reassigned. Job done. The thought was dreadful. And that said a lot. 

Many things had happened in the past year, so many stupid and dangerous and stupidly dangerous things, but Ninette never thought for a second that ve would would be standing there with a soft spot for some random criminals. At least Faye was family and their best friend was close enough to be considered the same!  

But these people were France’s most wanted! Sure, Nins couldn’t exactly claim to be a pillar of morality but surely ve was better than this. 

Right? 

Had all the years of excusing Faye’s actions really taken such a toll? Or had ve always been capable of feeling so affectionate for reprehensible parties? 

Ninette took a bottle of wine off the top shelf and popped it open. No one hopped onto the nearest barstool, gave their best smile and insisted on sharing but no one bothered to acknowledge the actions at all so that was good enough. Taking a breath, ve leaned vex head back and took a swig. Maybe ve could close up early, go see what everyone else was so occupied with, maybe try to stop them, maybe not. Or perhaps ve would go home and go to bed, when was the last time ve had even gotten more than 4 hours sleep? God knows ve deserved it. As much joy that could be taken from the job and helping the public and vex sisters it didn’t erase the tension that was carried in vex shoulders or the years worth of exhaustion you could see in vex one good eye. 

That would have to be it. Ninette would close up early, go home and rest. Revisit this moral dilemma in the morning with a fresh perspective on things. Or perhaps just ignore it, pretend the thoughts never crossed vex mind. Who wants to spend their 50’s so concerned with what’s wrong and what’s right anyways? Surely Nins had done enough good by vex country to just get a free pass at this point, and if not? Well, who cared, ve was certainly too tired to anymore.
