Vexen Character Analysis Week Day 7-Connections and Interactions with the rest of Organization XIII

This was actually the first one I came up with for this week, but I held off on it to make sure I didn’t run out of ideas. Vexen/Even is in a unique position of having shared a scene with or is in some way connected to every other member of the original Organization. In this last post for the analysis week, I want to take a closer look at them.

Xemnas-While they never directly interact, there are still some things worth noting. They once were co-workers as apprentices, but this completely changed when they formed the Organization. Vexen is shown seeing him as his boss, but it’s not clear just how much he actually respects him. Sometimes Vexen is characterized as being under his thumb, while other times he seems to have little concern about Xemnas’s authority, as he has twice gone against the plans of the Organization. Xemnas doesn’t seem to care about Vexen on any level deeper than research. He may even actively try to avoid him going off that one 2FM cutscene, although that may just be Vexen’s arrogance talking.

Xigbar- He is the one with the least to be said about. They were co-workers and that’s it. They are never seen interacting and nothing is said in-game that would give an idea on their feelings about each other.

Xaldin/Dilan-Another Radiant Garden co-worker. Not much to say here either as they don’t interact. Dilan was probably worried when Even went missing and that’s all I got.

Lexaeus/Aeleus-Continuing with the apprentices, but unlike the last three there’s a lot more to actually say here. Lexaeus, Vexen and Zexion are shown to still share the fairly close bond they had as Somebodies. Lexaeus seems to be one of the only people Vexen has genuine respect for. Aeleus also seems to show concern over Even’s disappearance. Even seems to value him as a fellow apprentice and doesn’t seem to talk with him in an overly formal way. He seems to be closer to Aeleus then he does Dilan, although that partly do to how things shook out game appearance-wise. It’s also worth noting that Vexen, Lexaeus and Zexion tend to be grouped together in supplementary content.

Zexion/Ienzo-Out of all the Org members, Zexion is easily the one he is closest to. This comes from the fact that he is for all intents and purposes Ienzo’s dad. While Ansem and Even both share the role of father figure, Ienzo’s Character File makes it clear Even did most of the actual work. Ienzo describes him as a stern but loving figure who could sometimes be a bit strict, but still deeply cared for him. It’s clear from the scene in BBS that Even does care a lot about Ienzo. Unfortunately, becoming Nobodies put a damper on this. They both become a lot harsher to each other. It’s not completely gone though as Zexion gets pretty upset over Vexen being killed. Demyx also mentions them as an example of people in the Org who are friends, so they may be a bit more cordial off-screen. Ienzo is clearly the person most upset over Even’s disappearance. It’s not a stretch to read what he says in KH3 as him being scared that he may have lost Even permanently that time. Once they’re both back as apprentices they seem to have patched their relationship up.

Saïx/Isa- I feel like Saïx and him have by far the strangest interactions as it goes from Saïx having him killed to being comrades in betraying the Real Org. It’s a bit tricky to judge how they feel from the scene they share as it is clearly meant to be an act put on to prevent the Org from figuring out what they’re doing. It’s possible they bear no Ill will towards each other as they both seem to have taken a stance of “Yeah I really messed up when I was Nobody”. There’s also the pre-fall of Radiant Garden stuff, like Subject X and the darkness experiments, but it does seem like Isa trusts him, so that doesn’t seem to be something he holds against Even.

Axel/Lea- This one is a bit tricky to analyze because, to be honest, Axel is kind of all over the place as a character. He doesn’t seem to like Vexen all that much in CoM, although his actions there were part of a job Saïx gave him. It’s possible he regrets them due to just how many problems Vexen (and Zexion) being dead causes in Days. I have no clue how he feels after his re-completion, does he still dislike him or did saving Roxas and Xion make him change his tune, who knows. I don’t want to be too harsh here as there were likely outside factors contributing to how Axel’s writing ended up in KH3. As for Vexen, he doesn’t like him and the game directly states that, so no ambiguity here. Even still may not like Lea much once he becomes a Somebody again. He brings it up in a conversation in KH3, but as I’ll mention in the Saïx section that scene shouldn’t be taken at face value. Some of the stuff Vexen says when talking to Org members in KH3 has also been shown to not be how he actually feels. Anywho, this has kind of just been a long winded way to say who knows.

Demyx-This one’s fun because there’s some neat details to look at! Obviously, they have their scene together, where Demyx sees Vexen as a stuck up bore and Vexen sees Demyx as annoying, but Vexen’s Character File gives some extra context to this. In there Vexen talks about how someone being dumb doesn’t prevent them from being wise in their own way, with Demyx being used as an example. It seems that Vexen does appreciate him in his own way, even if he finds him a bit much.

Luxord-Luxord just thinks of Vexen as that researcher guy who sucks up to Xemnas. Nothing in the one scene they share really gives anything to work with on how Vexen feels about Luxord, so I can’t really say something on that.

Marluxia/Lauriam-They absolutely despise each other as Nobodies. This almost certainly comes from the fact they were butting heads over who was in charge of Castle Oblivion. Strangely enough I don’t think they’d dislike each other as Somebodies though. Looking at their Character Files shows them to be in fairly similar positions in their feelings post-recompletion. They both wax about their feelings towards their actions and thoughts as Nobodies and have an almost disconnect between their Somebody and Nobody. After his recompletion, Lauriam’s goal is to work out his memories and Radiant Garden is the best place to go for something like that. I feel they would both hold feelings of regret in that situation. This is getting a bit too speculative, so I’ll end this by saying I think they could have a really neat conversation.

Larxene/Elrena -She doesn’t like him and he doesn’t like her. Interestingly, nothing about this seems to be personal, she just doesn’t like most people in general and he sees everyone as beneath him. They were never going to get along, even if they met under the best of circumstances.

Roxas- Roxas would probably have mixed feelings on Even. On one hand, he’s the guy who gave him a less than fun lesson on how to do recon, on the other hand Even played a huge role in bringing not only him but also Xion and Namine back. The recon lesson wasn’t the worse lesson he had, but it definitely wasn’t the best either. By the end of the lesson, Vexen seemed to think Roxas had some promise at doing recon, so he likely has at least some respect for him, well as much respect as someone as arrogant as Vexen can give anyway. Even also felt like it was his responsibility to make things right by giving Roxas a vessel, so he does feel some amount of care. Maybe some of his good will towards Ventus transferred over to Roxas.

Xion- They may not have any on-screen interactions, but they are characters who are deeply connected. Xion knows him only as the person who created her, but doesn’t know much more besides that as she never got to meet him. She doesn’t ever talk about him, but going off of what we know she likely sees him as a curious figure whose presence looms over her life. Even does seem to care about her and feels a great sense of responsibility as the person who brought her into the world. Going off of the secret files in KH3, he remembered her when no else did. He also put his life on the line to make sure she was able to live a full life. It seems like he has a deep regret for the suffering she had to endure as part of the Organization from both the perspective of a scientist with an obligation to help others and as someone who had a responsibly to watch over her. I hope they do interact at some point in canon as it would be such an interesting scene.

So ends my little week dedicated to doing some fun little bits of analysis of my favorite character. I had a lot of fun doing it and I hope people enjoy reading it. I plan to do a bonus day, but it will just be little things.

He really, really didn’t want to, of course. He’d been desperate to avoid the whole damn mess that he knew well that he would, inevitably, have to deal with, no matter how many times he’d thought he’d clawed his way to some semblance of safety. No---too many demons he thought he’d managed to shake after all these centuries of running, now all sitting at the bonfire of his accumulated sins before him---smiling. Waiting.

So, it was honesty she wanted, huh?

His hand withdrew from resting upon her shoulder, and he backed away from her abruptly---putting a cold distance between them. He knew he was a heavy guy, but he could really feel it now---emotionally, throughout his entire frame, as though gravity had grown sentient and had developed malicious intentions. And crossing his arms, he sought to steel himself and ignore this weight---focus on what was at hand.

Okay, alright then. Honesty.

Before he spoke, he recalled specifically when he had gotten a good, hearty dose of that honesty that Xion wanted from him now: when he had been approached by none other than Vexen—that humorless mad scientist that Xigbar had come to know so well, and had come to wish to never see again---after all these years. Thankfully Vexen had no quarrel with Xigbar---in fact, they had been (reluctant) allies, once upon a time---part of the coup that had ended (in Xigbar’s humble opinion) Xehanort’s utterly bogus plans for domination over the mortal world. Creating doppelganger werewolves, gathering an unstoppable inhuman army, etcetera---a whole self-righteous sort of villainous agenda that took only a couple wrenches thrown into the gears to cause Xehanort's kin and himself to disappear to… wherever it was they were now.

And after Xigbar had convinced his companion to accompany him to one of his favorite bars (which, ultimately, Vexen had described as “far too unclean and uncouth for my personal tastes”), he relayed to Xigbar a revelation of such bizarre quality that, with that burden unleashed and Vexen’s immediate departure, had left the one-eyed wolf staring at his undrained drink for longer than he would care to admit.

And now, it was his turn to unload that truth---whether Xion would like it or not.

Back in the real world of awkward silence, Xigbar at last let out the sigh that he had not realized he had been withholding, then shifted away from the counter, his slow paces seeking to move the two of them back into the living room---no alcohol in his hand, this time.

She'd better be proud of his restraint, in light of the conversation that was about to occur.

“…Fine. But you’re gonna hafta let me go off uninterrupted, ya got that?”

The ice pack, cold and frozen, chilled the aching pain in the back of Xion's head. She held it to her scalp beneath her palm, fingers going numb. It soothed the dull pain and brought relief, even if temporary, in the replace of the sharp needle pain of cooled blood. Xion watched Xigbar, watched the effect her words had on him and how they seemed to roll through his body. It unsettled her to see him unsettled. Xigbar had been around forever in comparison to her. He'd seen everything. She was not his first kid. Not the first kid he had raised. Not even the first kid he could see die. This, the reminder of her mortality, shouldn't get under his skin. Xion had always assumed, even known that she was in danger.

But it had, it was, under her skin. She frowned as he leaned back from the cabinet, his gestures slowed as if moving in relative time. Xion shifted from foot-to-foot. She wanted Xigbar to crack a joke or ruffle her hair. Any of his usual candor with a typical, gruff, "don't worry about it kid." And she couldn't say when she had stopped worrying about it. Worrying about where she'd sleep or what she'd eat, or if there'd be a roof over her head. She had stopped worrying about people following her and stopped worrying about random attacks from nowhere.

He stepped towards her, an unfamiliar emotion on his face. Xion frowned, looking-up at him, a slight furrow in her brow. For the first time since Xion had met him, she truly had no idea what he was going to do or say. Not until he placed his hand on her shoulder. Physical touch was unusual for them. The heat of Xigbar's palm dissipated through her shirt and into her skin, a contrast to the seeping cold of the ice pack against her scalp. Hot, cold, Xion ran between two extremes.

"Well, shit," Xion said, her mouth twisted into an unimpressed and unamused line. "You're acting like I'm already dead. Save me the eulogy, Xigbar."

That was a funny thought, what he'd say at her funeral... if she even got one.

"Xion was massive pain in my ass. She never did what she was told and always argued with me, but the kid was as sharp as a thumbtack."

"I'm nervous because I don't know what's going on," Xion explained, "and obviously, you don't know what's going on either. But right now it feels like..." It was more emotional candor than she was used to with him, or anyone. She read a book about this from the library, about using actual emotional labels to express feelings. Make it about 'us' or 'me' instead of you. "I'm not scared of people attacking me. I'm scared of not having a plan when they come back to try again and you getting drunk isn't a plan."

Not that Xigbar could really get drunk, or even shitfaced, but her point stood. Xion didn't feel like watching him pound back shots when she was experiencing existential dread.

"So, like," she shifted, uncomfortably. Eyes skirting of to the side. Xion put the ice pack aside and hooked an arm around her waist. "Talk to me. For once."

I said I would write down those mems, so here we go.

Left out a lot of stuff, but this still got pretty long. I’m so sorry if you’re using mobile.

It was always ridiculously cold in Vexen’s lab, for pretty obvious reasons. He didn’t mind cold, since ice was his element. He absolutely hated hot weather and once admitted to me that he would rather scrub the toilets all week than get sent to Agrabah for even just one mission. Kind of had to agree with him, I didn’t like that world much either. Too much sand (not enough to make me want to clean toilets all day instead, though).

Vexen was an organized chaos. His lab was a mess (because he had so much lab equipment, but the room he had been given wasn’t big enough), but somehow he always knew where everything he needed was. Dude had a ridiculously good memory. He was also extremely tidy person, possibly the only one actually taking cleaning seriously. Whereas the rest of us often let the dusks handle our assigned cleaning duties, Vexen never did so.

And then he complained how he’s always way too busy with other stuff to properly focus on his experiments. You should’ve used the dusks, you dork.

Vexen always drank his coffee black. Since I didn’t like coffee much back then, I thought he was an absolute madman. Also he didn’t even need that coffee ffs, he had way too much energy even without any. Could survive days with just nasty black coffee.

It’s great to try out new things in the kitchen, but he was way too experimental. No one liked his cooking, but he didn’t give a damn.

A walking freezer. I s2g his body temperature was most of the time probably like below zero degrees. Awful to sleep next to when you’re already feeling cold (also hogs blankets, rude), 0.5/5 would not recommend (great when it’s hot, though).

Once I woke up and thought he had died. That’s how cold his body got sometimes.

Faintly smelled like mint. Probably because of some weird mixtures he was brewing in his lab.

Could go on and on about things he was fascinated with for hours and I usually listened the whole lecture if I didn’t have anything better to do.

Had very neat handwriting even when writing in hurry.

Sometimes got him to write my reports for me (or at least tell me what to write), but had to be persuaded the right way first.

At first I thought Vexen was quite annoying, mostly because he seemed to think I was way below him. I remember him calling me “a newcomer who doesn’t know his place” during our first conversation, degrading me. However, I soon learned that he acted the same way towards pretty much everyone, so I stopped caring and mostly ignored him for some time. I was curious about him, though, since I felt like there was more to him than what the first impression gave away.

He was weird, yet very intelligent. Probably always felt underappreciated by others and that’s why acted the way he did.

After a mission we were ordered to do together, we started talking more. Nothing special at first, mostly just “hey, what have you been up to lately?” kind of stuff, but little by little our conversations got deeper.

Vexen told me that he had studied hearts and had theories. According to him, we nobodies weren’t completely empty shells. That we still had our hearts, they were just severely damaged and needed time to heal, some longer than others, thus our emotions were limited and seemed only like memories. So obviously he didn’t buy Xemnas’ claim that Kingdom Hearts was the only way to have our hearts back, but he did theorize that it could perhaps hasten the healing process.

He also theorized that being a nobody was only a temporary state, that if and when we faded, we would return to being somebodies. I wasn’t so sure did I believe his theories, but they sure were interesting to think about.

We talked about emotions and what we could feel and what not. I asked him if there was anything he was particularly feeling at the moment and I remember the strange, almost angry look he gave me. It wasn’t anger, however, I had seen him angry before. He turned away to hide the pale pink that colored his cheeks and changed the subject.

I usually liked to playfully tease him about stuff, that time I did not. It was obvious to me what his reaction meant, but I was too surprised to say anything. Took me a while to process it, but soon realized that I felt the same way about him and decided to bring it up some time, to let him know that it was mutual.

I was very straightforward with it when I told Vexen that he made me feel things I thought I couldn’t feel anymore. Never before had I seen him so quiet, just staring at me like I just murdered his whole family right in front of him or confessed that I eat babies for breakfast or something. The silence was incredibly awkward and for a brief moment I thought I had interpret his earlier actions completely wrong. I was ready to run out from his lab to hide somewhere, but he then pulled me into a tight hug, much to my surprise.

From that on our relationship became quite complicated, almost on-off style. Sometimes we acted like young kids in love for the first time and then sometimes fought about whatever, ending up not talking to each other for days. But we always went back to each other and stupid little fights were forgiven.

We kept it all a secret and acted like we were just colleagues who barely tolerated each other. I feel like Vexen was even better at hiding it than I was, since I sometimes found myself staring at him a little bit too long. Wasn’t sure did anyone actually notice, though.

Vexen wasn’t too happy when I told him about my plans of taking over the Organization. I’d never seen him that angry before, especially after I asked him to join me and Larxene. He yelled at me, told me that Xemnas would eventually find out - if he already didn’t know - and my plan fail (probably should’ve fucking listened to him). I tried to convince him that it was all going to work out, but he wasn’t buying any of it.

He didn’t want any part in it and gave me a choice: Either abandon my plan or everything we had built between us. Foolishly I chose the latter, thinking that my goals were far more important. He had been a lovely distraction from everything, but it had to end.

We didn’t talk much after that, barely even noticed each other when we were in the same room. I hated that he got sent to CO as well and he seemed to hate it too, especially since Xemnas made me the leader of the group.

Ordering Axel to eliminate him wasn’t only a test to prove Axel’s loyalty, but also to test my own devotion to my plans. I didn’t feel anything at that moment, but boy, did the regret hit hard later. Fortunately his theories turned out to be right; after fading we didn’t disappear, but turned back to fully human.

Even/Vexen from Kingdom Hearts looking for everyone but especially Ienzo and Aeleus. I don't have very many memories as of currently but I remember having feelings for Aeleus, perhaps dating him, and I may have legally adopted Ienzo? I'm unsure. I'm alright with talking to anybody but Xehanort and Ansem the Wise. I'm alright with talking to Axel but I might be.. wary. I'm 16 in this life, and unsure about doubles. Like/rb this and I'll contact you.
