As the photographers raised their cameras, he hid the emptiness in his heart behind a dazzling smile, sculptured to perfection in two decades of competitive figure skating. Flashlights ripped through the arena like sheet lightning on a murky summer night. Viktor swept back his hair and lifted the golden disk that hung heavy around his neck to his lips. A collective sigh rippled through the crowd as he performed the ritualistic kiss of his medal. Viktor flashed the press another star-smile. Then he hopped off the podium. Twenty years of being Russia’s poster athlete have drained Viktor Nikiforov off the passion he once had held for his sport, but caught up in duty and habit he cannot escape the icon he has become. Thoughts of retirement cross his mind when a drunken Japanese Cinderella dances into his life, stirring a dream of life and love beyond scores and medals. But that which sets his heart on fire also holds the power to throw Viktor into an even darker state of mind. This canon story covers the four months between the GPF and Viktor deciding to become Yuuri’s coach.

Excerpt:

“How do you feel having broken your world record in the free programme for the third time?”

“Where will you compete next?”

“Now that you’ve won the Grand Prix Final more often than every other skater in history, what is your next goal?”

“You kept surprising the audience season after season. Do you ever run out of ideas?”

“There have been rumours circulating about you wanting to retire. What are your thoughts about your future career? How will you reassure your fans?”

Viktor tucked his black necktie into the waistcoat of his dark-grey three-piece suit and regarded himself in the mirror. As so often, his silver-blonde bangs exhibited an irritating life on their own. He returned to the bathroom.

I wish I had known my hair would do this before I had it cut, he thought as he fixed the stubborn cowlick with hair wax. Now, it’s too thin to let it grow long again. What late-adolescent fit made me think short hair would give me a more mature image?

One last time, he checked his mirror image before he returned to the bedroom. The day had been crammed with gala practice, interviews, gala, and more interviews he had braved with non-committal answers and his star-smile. Now, one last social function loomed ahead and he would survive this one with more star-smiles and non-committal answers.

What people took for the beautiful and mysterious ice prince was a carefully crafted façade. Never give the press what they’re lusting for. Information was power, and Viktor preferred to stay in control of what he wanted to reveal.

They’ve been talking about my retirement as if I’ve already announced it.

Suddenly, he was choking on the sadness that had been lurking at the edge of his mind during the competition. He had thought it was gone. Why was it back? After three days of competition, he had no energy left to deal with this. And all because some overzealous fan had interpreted his expression during his recent performances as a growing contempt for his craft. As if Viktor’s presentation stood in contrast to his season’s theme.

Just two more hours. I don’t need to stay until the end. There will be champagne and music, and small talk. It’s just a different kind of performance. I have scripts for that.

But he was deluding himself. Unlike a programme that relied on muscle memory and an intense, innate focus, social functions demanded constant attention. Just the thing to look forward to after competing had drained Viktor of the energy he had scraped together to get through the event in the first place. And the Russian Hero was expected to attend even more than any other skater, and Viktor hated to disappoint.

There was a knock on his door.

Taking a deep breath, Viktor composed himself. I kept myself together for a long weekend. I can manage another couple of hours.

He picked up his blazer from the comforter. “I’m coming!”

He opened the door and stared right into a red-cheeked face framed by short blonde curls.

“Chris!”

His friend grinned. “Curious. Your hair doesn’t look like that, dear.”

Story Preview: The Katsuki-Nikiforovs review the comments on their jointly written friends-to-lovers/role-reversal fanfic

“Just half an hour ago, he whipped out an annoyingly good quad flip, and now he’s fawning over dog costumes like the biggest dork in Japan,” Yuri mumbled incredulously, before peering up at him. “The duality of man, or whatever. Catch you later, Katsudon.”

Yuuri laughed and waved at him before walking over to Viktor, reflecting all the while on how elatedly his husband had reacted when he’d asked him back in April if he’d be open to co-writing a fanfic together. Though he wouldn’t change a single thing about their own love story, the idea of a world in which he had been the “Living Legend” of figure skating before dropping out of sight at the peak of his career to become a coach was endlessly fascinating.

At first, Yuuri had thought about just writing the fic himself and surprising Viktor with it, but when he’d found himself stumped by a few key framing questions, it had occurred to him that the activity might be a fun way for them to bond.

In retrospect, it seemed silly when he recalled how nervous he’d been to make the request of Viktor in the first place.

Though he’d initially been worried that his love had only wanted to humor him, the din of his intrusive thoughts had been quelled almost immediately. Indeed, the night after they’d first started drafting the outline of what eventually became Put It In Reverse For Thirst, he’d been awoken the next morning with a steaming cup of coffee, an indulgent stack of syrniki, and an extensive Pinterest board of images – including some extremely NSFW (not to mention logistically impossible) fanart of them making out on top of a zamboni – to inspire them as they continued to brainstorm.

Feeling his heart flutter with fondness at the memory of Viktor’s eagerness, Yuuri quickened his pace, grinning at how he was so preoccupied with his phone that he didn’t even sense his approach.

Grabbing him in a hug from behind, he giggled at the squeak Viktor let out when he pressed a kiss to his shoulderblade and smushed his face into his warmup jacket.

The above is an excerpt of the companion story to my 5 chapter Yuri!!! on Ice “fic within a fic”: a story in which Yuuri and Viktor read aloud and attempt to roleplay the fanfic they co-write about how Coach/Living Legend Katsuki Yuuri finally gets together with his best friend (and student), Viktor.

If you’ve read it, you might remember that due to the very eros environment that takes over, the Katsuki-Nikiforovs didn’t quite manage to stick to the (tamer) events of their sappy/smutty fic (titled Put It In Reverse For Thirst, and yes, I purposely leaned into just how on the nose that pun is).

I'd always intended to write a part 2 of the series which would cover their uploading their story to Archive Of Our Own and going through the comments together, and I was particularly thrilled to find out that there is an awesome guide that shows you how to mimic the look of the ao3 interface for this very meta purpose; see the screenshot of fake comments that I made, above.

I’m having a blast writing this second part and leaning even more into the meta nature of this story -- in particular, I am spending WAY too much time coming up with fun ao3 usernames and icons...see Haru from Fruits Basket up above! -- which will feature Yuuri and Viktor learning the lesson that us fanfic writers eventually all learn: someone out there on the internet will always have a problem with your work. LOL. Luckily, they are there to comfort one another and also to laugh and get silly around the comments they receive.

I'm aiming to get part 2 out in the next two weeks, so I hope you’ll read part 1 and subscribe to the series overall if this piques your interest!

I need help finding a fic please! Its an AU where Yuuri is still a skater but Victor is a singer or novelist. Yuuri got a ticket for a meet and greet/autograph session with Victor(I think it might have been some kind of giveaway thing he won??) But it was happening at the same time as a competition so he had to sneak away. I remember that Victor doesn't like his earlier works but Yuuri does and defended them. Then he had to run off, I think to get back to the competition, and accidentally left his bag. Victor finds it and it has a medal inside of it. I think it might have been an Olympic medal? I remember Yakov kinda freaking out about Victor handling it. Victor decides he needs to return it and I think Yakov helps him track down Yuuri? I don't remember what happens after that but hopefully thats enough to track it down!

Yuuri can’t believe his luck when he wins an exclusive meet and greet with Viktor Nikiforov, the world famous pop icon with millions of devoted fans, Yuuri’s longtime idol and true inspiration. Sure, the timing could have been a lot better, but Yuuri is determined to meet Viktor no matter what. He’ll just have to sneak away, and get back as soon as possible. Maybe Celestino won’t even notice.

Viktor is tired, and lonely, and not at all expecting to fall so deeply in love with a beautiful stranger. Now, if only there was a way for them to see each other again.

A story about meetings, about things that are lost but not forgotten, and eventually, about being found.

To celebrate Valentine’s day, I’m watching Yuri on Ice for the first time since it came out!!

Episode 1 reaction:

-Almost 7 years later and yoi’s theme song still fucking slaps

-“I’m a dime a dozen figure skater” Yuuri you made it to the Grand Prix and are like the top skater in Japan what the fuck

-Having a breakdown in the bathroom is such a mood
