Day 13 - Bandhavgarh National Park

We arrived in Katni on time at 6am and negotiated with a Tuk Tuk driver for his mates taxi. We had to wait 15 mins for him to get up and dressed so we joined the locals (taxi/Tuk Tuk drivers) in a little cafe for a chai and some loud bangra music.

The journey to bandhavgarh was about 2 and a half hours through some lovely countryside, it’s so nice to get out of the cities and see some clean, green sights.

We were greeted at Tigergarh Wildlife Luxury Resort by the owner Gagan and a cool lemon juice. The place is pretty remote and there are 10 cottages each with their own veranda and bathroom.

Our accommodation is full board so we had breakfast once we’d freshened up which was toast and jam, fruit, a flattened rice dish with nuts (a bit like a warm Bombay mix), fried pasta, an omelette and some chai.

It is a very peaceful, tranquil place with only the sound of birds and monkeys to listen to, a very welcome change to the constant beeping and chaos of everywhere else we’ve been.

Over lunch Gagan joined us and we had some interesting discussions on the education of Indians. In essence he feels that Indian people are split and going through a process of change. There are still the old school religious generation that do things how they have been over the past centuries. There is a generation that is slightly more westernised and appreciate practical changes and modernisation but still hold some of the old characteristics such as spitting and littering. Then there is the more recent innovative hi tech generation who are striving for a more western way including cleaner cities, healthier ways of living, striving for equality.

Interestingly he believes that the western world is now striving for a more spiritual way of living which India possesses. He said “we can see the mistakes the West has made but we will follow the same path non the less. We will then have the realisation that we could have learned more and caught up quicker”.

The rest of the day we rested, sat in the sun and watched one of the staff put a wash coat of cow dung over one of the mud floors.. apparently it keeps insects away when dried.

We joined our host for a walk to the local village and back which was interesting then after our dinner at 7:30 we retired as it was a 5:30am start for safari the next day.

Education gives us a knowledge of the world around us and changes it into something better. It develops in us a perspective of looking at life. . . See the importance of education. Siblings walking barefoot towards the school, holding a lunch box in hand and struggling with the hot sun.

One of the things that always mesmerize me traveling #ghana is to see how communities decide to turn their own fade. This village had to built a new chapel but instead of just using it for services, the perish decided to offer the room for community activities. When the Muslim chief of the village learned about this decision he gave land to build the church. After they finished construction they recognized there are still many bricks left over, they built a school for all the children in the village. This community really sticks together, no matter what their differences might be.
