4. How many WIPs do you have right now?

Only 4! And one is almost done, it just needs a last check and a title so hopefully I can do that within the next hour or so. I do have lots of notes for future things to write but they're all in my notes document instead of their own documents being written so they don't count as WIPs yet. I tell myself so it looks like I have a manageable amount of things to write

8. What project(s) are you currently working on?

The one that's almost done is a prompt fill, but my main project right now is the Flashvibe Ghost AU which is a DCTV fic where Cisco's just started work at S.T.A.R. Labs and offered to help the (cute) ghost haunting the place fulfil his unfinished business and move on (so it's probably not going to be his best idea to go fall in love with said ghost while doing that). That's at 26k right now and I've just hit the start of the climax so hopefully it should be done by the end of the month at least?

I'm also crocheting a shawl which is completely irrelevant to fic writing but the pattern is available for free on Ravelry here and it's so beautiful and I love it. It uses US terminology instead of UK so there's been a couple of points where I've got my stitches confused but it's just so pretty

12. Do you have a playlist for your current WIP(s)? Share it!

The Wally Fic is the only one with a playlist and I'm not actually sure if this is going to work or not because I have never done this but there is a link here maybe

16. At what point in the process do you come up with titles?

Usually last probably when I've had a fic maybe finished for a few hours to a few days and have been staring at that little box as it taunts me into forgetting every word in the English language. There is a reason I accidentally gave two fics published near each other very similar names and didn't realise until like six weeks later.

20. What’s a favourite title for a fic you’ve written?

I'm quite fond of Ghosting (it's a haunted house fic, but Ghosting is actually a plastering term I found on a forum about asking builders for help with DIY. The plastering was relevant to the fic)

Chapter 2: The Journey

The journey begins with a long road and too many steps.

He goes, because of course he does, and when she is done retching, he helps her to her feet, drapes her chin over his shoulder as he hikes her trousers up for her.

‘I’m not an invalid,’ she protests, but it’s meek, too quiet. She sounds defeated and he hates it.

‘I know,’ he says, ‘but you are not well.’

‘It’s just a pregnancy.’

‘Bullshit,’ Vincent says.

 He feels her swallow against his shoulder, and they do not speak again. They climb back into the car in silence, she buckles herself in, picks at a granola bar, stares out of the window as he drives. He opens a bottle of water one handed, swallows a mouthful, and extends it to her. She refuses, settles herself into her seat and closes her eyes. He turns his gaze back to the empty wild before them, and the only sound is the rumble of the road beneath them.

I may have worded my tags badly, I don’t think there was involvement in a disinformation scheme.  From what I can gather, news came out about Putin stepping down and writing legislation that would make it harder to prosecute previous presidents while news also dropped that Castiel and Dean were canonically a thing in the show Supernatural.  Then I think people started making memes about how Destiel was the cause of Putin getting sick and having to resign.

So I just got done reading this wonderful Gorillaz fanfiction called Snapshots by vinnie2757 on fanfiction.net

Gorillaz Fic Recs Part 1

Today’s a day all about love, and I just feel like there isn’t a whole lot of love shown towards the fanfic side of this fandom. Hopefully my haphazard rec list can fix that.

A lot of fics on this list (though certainly not all) feature Murdoc as the main character (because I love him lol), so if you hate him, maybe skip over this rec list.

Things They Don’t Understand by Ferrenbach

Summary: Murdoc is the most real person in the world, but it's hard to make people understand when he doesn't have the words.

Rating: Teen

BOOOIIII this fic. THIS fic right here is my jam. I absolutely adore it to bits, and whenever I’m lacking inspiration to write for my own fic, I go and revisit it.

The poetic style, the deep characterizations of both Murdoc and 2-D, just everything about this fic is so damn good, my dudes. Holy shit, I cannot recommend this one-shot enough.

Worlds Infinite by Ferrenbach

Summary:

Murdoc goes looking for 2-D, who can only take so much party noise. He can also only take so much alcohol before turning into an armchair philosopher. Murdoc is more practical. There's no sense in musing on "what-ifs" after all, is there?

Rating: Gen

Yet another great piece from Ferrenbach. I’ve been meaning to delve into their other fics, too, but so far I’ve only had time to read a couple of their one-shots.

I adore the atmosphere of this fic, and the descriptions and characterizatons of Murdoc and 2-D are just as amazing as in Things They Don’t Understand.

The Gunpowder Princess by ghoullly

Summary:

A runaway princess with a gun on her back

A man with raven's wings and a bird's skull atop his head.

A giant man with long legs and the biggest heart she'd ever seen (figuratively and literally).

A man with a ghost between his ears and the ability to sway the elements with his mood.

A ragtag group of misfits band together to travel to the edge of Japan to help the young heiress escape her planned assassination. They quickly realize that it's not as easy as it sounds, especially with some dangerous people following close behind.

I haven’t had the chance to catch up with this fic in a while (and it’s unfinished), but I adore this AU to bits. Japanese folklore AND found family dynamic? Yes, please.

Horse With No Name by Invader Sam

Summary:

Another one-shot Gorillaz fic, this time set during their first US tour. Noodle is plagued with nightmares and Murdoc, fearing it may be affecting her performance in the band, decides to 'handle it'. :) Rated for one or two curse words.

Rating: Teen

This is a really cute Phase 1 Murdad one-shot that made me smile a lot.

Another cute Phase 1 one-shot where both Noodle and 2-D have nightmares and sneak into Murdoc’s bed to talk to him about it like the kids they are, much to his weary dismay.

I haven’t read all the one-shots in this collection yet, but it’s nice to take a peek into these song creation moments the band members get up to here.

Summary: Murdoc makes amends. (My own take on a common Gorillaz fanfic trope.)

Rating: Mature

This is more a comedy one-shot than a family one. I’m not exaggerating when I say I yelled at this Phase 4 fic lmao. I won’t spoil anything other than the fact that this is just Peak Murdoc™.

Summary:

Privacy is something you trade for fame, Murdoc knew that, but there's always something personal you hope to cling to, something to keep for yourself.

Now if only the fucking media and their hack lackeys would quit acting like that belonged to them too.

Rating: Teen

This is a great Phase 1 fic focusing on Murdoc’s own battle with internalized homophobia after the media tries to rip his coming out away from him in an interview.

This fic does have some slurs in it, courtesy of Murdoc’s own foul mouth and internalized hatred, but do read this one if you’re okay reading that sort of thing.

What Are We Going to Do? by Close_enough_to_lose

Summary:

Murdoc notices that Noodle looks embarrassed while handing 2D the lyric sheet for Every Planet We Reach Is Dead. He quickly figures out why. Luckily, it’s one thing he’s equipped to deal with.

Murdoc finds out Noodle is bi and gives her his advice.

Rating: Teen

More Murdoc being a good dad to Noodle. :D Just a bi dad giving his bi daughter (actually good) advice.

2D is Weird by alexisntedgy

Summary:

2D has always been a little different. Or, other people always thought he was. But when people keep telling someone that they're weird, it starts to get to you.

Or, 2D is autistic and has a panic attack because of his ~issues~.

I also have a headcanon that 2-D is autistic, and I like how this fic portrays how he struggles with his and other people’s perceptions of it and him. Noodle’s also being a good sister to him here, so that’s a plus.

I adore the many character study fics in this fandom, and this one is no exception. It’s a great insight into 2-D’s romantic mind.

(It’s like it’s all you’ve ever known.)

This fic hurts my heart, but damn is it good. The descriptions of Murdoc’s feelings and his past are so poignant here, I just want to hug him.

Summary: There's a reason why Murdoc doesn't have them anymore. (Rated for: Major character "death", Gore, Blood, Nudity and Murdoc.)

Rating: Mature

This is a horror/supernatural one-shot that (to me at least) is more comedic than scary. Of course, the descriptions are downright macabre (which I love), but...again Peak Murdoc here.

Lucy, I’m Home by TheDarkLegate

Summary:

After the release of Humanz, Murdoc isn't willing to wait another seven years for more success. Lucifer wants to see just what he'll give up to get it. One shot. Spiritual Successor to "A Day in the Life of Satan".

Rating: Teen

I’ve hardly (if ever) seen any fanfics that delve into Murdoc’s deal with the Devil. The way Lucifer is portrayed as a world-weary businessman rather than someone to fear is pretty funny and really in line with Gorillaz’ sense of humor, too.

Morning Person by Lmaooooonade

Summary:

A young boy cherishes the mornings where he can just exist. Things might not be great, but he can at least exist peacefully for a while.

Rated Teen for my fucking language.

Based off the headcanon of another creator I very much admire, please inquire within.

This Phase 0 fic is a great stand-alone read even if I haven’t really delved into the headcanons that inspired their fic (though I have seen their neat artwork around sometimes).

2. Do you plan each chapter ahead or write as you go?

I try and have a general plan of where things are going, but I don't necessarily plan individual chapters, I just put in breaks sometimes if it feels like a good moment (which is why Sweet Defiance is over 25k all in one chapter, I just kept writing and didn't really stop and think I need a break at any point, and I didn't realise how long it was until it was done. The Night Shift is also over 25k all in one chapter, and that's mostly because I didn't pick a point to break it up while I was writing and partly because I did actually consider splitting it into chapters when I looked at the word count part way through and during editing, probably three chapters, but the chapter titles that made sense from where I probably would have split it for the first two were Overground and Underground and then I couldn't think of a third title because I just kept getting the Wombles stuck in my head instead, so I scraped the chapters).

The exception for planning individual chapters was the Milk and Sugar 'verse, but that's because I used the episodes from canon as a lay-out for the chapters, and I planned all the fics out as I was going, though some still changed at the last minute because I had a different idea that fit what I had already written more.

13. What’s a common writing tip that you almost always follow?

Use said. It's definitely something I've been trying to add more and more- when I first started writing fic I was still using the way we learnt in school where you only need the dialogue tags at the start and you just alternate paragraphs and you should be able to make it clear who is speaking from that, but throwing in extra saids every so often makes it much clearer, so it's something I have been consciously working on trying to do more for a while.

19. What is the most-used tag on your ao3?

Alternate Universe- Canon Divergent. It's the one I find most fun to play around with, how will changing this part of the story here ripple out to change the rest of it

27. What is your most and least favorite part of writing?

I enjoy writing, that's why I do it, so it's actually hard to pick a favourite and I tend to have a different answer every time I get asked, but when you first get an idea and sit down to write and know this one's going to be fun, that's pretty good.

I guess least favourite, maybe editing when there's a lot of it? I use the read aloud function to edit, because I've found before I've clicked the wrong correction on spell check and not noticed until someone else has told me before, and it's a lot easier to hear when words are wrong than it is to see. And because I like to be able to jump back and forth as I write a little, I will write the whole thing then post it, so my last big fic, Gone in a Flash, is 78k and 29 chapters, which I ended up splitting so I would edit one chapter fully, then post it the following day (reading the whole thing again when I copied it into the AO3 text box), and after posting I would go and listen to and fully edit the next chapter. Which did work as a system, and I don't mind editing, I think it's just I had been working on it for a year, I was excited to finally share it, and there was this part still to do even though it felt finished, and because there was a lot of doing that there were a few parts it felt repetitive.

75. What scene in [Fanfic Name] took the longest to write? What was difficult about it? 

Sticking with Gone in a Flash, it had a few sticky moments, but I think when I got to Chapter 13/14, it felt like I was writing myself into a corner, there was only one option for where the characters could go from here but it wouldn't go their way, so I rewrote a few parts from Chapter 12 onwards a few times and it still kept circling back to this is where the plot wants them to be.

Luckily time travelling is a common thing in any Flash media and it was already part of the fic, so shifting the end of Chapter 14 to have some time travel meant they still ended up at that point, but there was a way to take it forwards from there (by going backwards again)

‘We need to leave,’ he tells her again, cups her face in both hands.

‘I can’t go,’ she says, her eyes hazy and unfocused. ‘I have work to do.’

‘It’s going to kill you.'

Her skin is clammy, her cheeks cold.

‘No,’ she assures him, with a lazy smile that is too soft, too vacant, for her usual knife’s edge. ‘It’ll be fine. Pregnancies are hard, Vincent. I’ve done the reading.’

He scoffs, and lets her go only long enough to wet a cloth to clean her face of sweat and blood. Gast cannot come quickly enough, he finds himself thinking, waiting on her to brush her teeth and get herself dressed. She is finding it difficult to do her trousers up; he will have to take her further afield to purchase new ones. Perhaps that is how he gets her out. He spirits her away under the guise of maternity clothes. Once they are gone, they can just not go back. She can’t drive, so she wouldn’t be able to stop him.

No, that is an unfair thing to do.

Its a bit silly and predictable in plot, not least because it's Hamlet! There's a very lovely looking Horatio, George MacKay sells it as Hamlet, and the colour palettes are beautiful. The music's gorgeous too. I watched it on Netflix in the UK, but I'll bet it's out there on your movie365s and novavideos and so on
