Franck - String Quartet in D Major (1890)
It's been a long time since I updated this blog with a new post. Too long. And to be honest it's been a tough year for me personally. I've gone through different kinds of losses and had lost enthusiasm for this hobby of writing about music. Today was a pretty rough day emotionally and, if I'm allowed to use cliches, music "saved" me. At least this quartet brought me back into a music mindset, and I don't write about Franck that often here. Main reason is that, despite his esteem as a major or great composer of the later 19th century, his reputation relies on a handful of works from much later in his life. This String Quartet was his last completed work and it shows the hallmarks of his self-realized style; very lyrical and melancholic, constantly modulating and flowing through a stream of tonality. He had completed this after studying quartets by Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. Especially from Schubert is where we get unexpected modulations. Ironically this last work was the first to get him praise during his lifetime. And as with his other major works, the quartet is cyclical, with themes from each movement returning in the finale. And I hope this music lifts your spirits as well to end off 2023
Movements:
Poco Lento, Allegro
Scherzo: Vivace
Larghetto
Finale: Allegro molto

I like making charcoal art while listening to albums on vinyl. It’s my favorite way to consume (and react to) media.
Listened to Signs of Life, watched that pretty purple disc spin, and churned out a portrait of this nifty chap.
The scribbles came of their own accord. Little nightmares, I think.

hello lovely people!
i'm excited to share my very first serious musical creation with you—a four-movement composition for string quartet, taking you on a musical rollercoaster from soothing, poised serenity, to mesmerizing uncertainty. it's been a labor of love, and i can't wait to share it with you.
music has been my constant companion, guiding me through different genres and inspiring me to explore its many facets; this project delves particularly into the classical realm. this composition is a nod to that classical influence i hold dear.
the journey to creating these pieces began during my formative years, between 15 and 17. it's been a dream of mine, and despite the hurdles and unexpected challenges, i'm thrilled to stand here today with a tangible creation. while it may not be flawless, it's a representation of my first steps in sharing my musical vision.
now, this is where you come in! i'm reaching out to you for your aid and encouragement on this project. whether you support my vision by donating, share the project to broaden its reach, or simply give it a listen, your contribution makes a world of difference!
wour support means everything. let's spread the joy of music together.
much love.

so what's hot classical music?
LMAO I'm so glad you asked (I imagine it's in reference to my tags on this post). I'd like to note that this is a very subjective list but I hope you enjoy:
Fratres by Arvo Pärt: No, I won't stop shilling this stunning gorgeous piece. You can absolutely craft a sex scene to this song just based on the contrasting sections. I know because I've written more than one while listening to it.
Czardas by Vittorio Monti: The drama of the first part is hot stuff. The vibrato. The lowkey encouragement to do some glissandos even if it isn't in the actual sheet music. The use of the g string.
Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2: I love the slow swell in the beginning and then the sweepingly romantic first movement that brings to mind being swept onto the dance floor and executing a really slow, stately waltz (but not a waltz because I believe it's in cut time and not 3/4).
Piazzola's Libertango: Definitely a more in-your-face hot because it's, well, a tango. Very passionate. Great beat.
Por Una Cabeza by Carlos Gerdel: Okay maybe I was influenced by that scene in Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino but it's great. Very romantic.
Salento by René Aubry: This is modern classical, a little more chill. There's this sustained, almost hypnotic rhythm that the guitars have going on and I think adds to a lowkey sultriness.

the real reason I don’t listen to a lot of classical music is because I’ll inevitably start listening to some Mendelssohn sextet and find myself getting really upset over the fact that I don’t live with more musicians

This set of four Antonio Stradivari instruments was once owned by Niccolò Paganini, who played them with his own string quartet. After his death they were dispersed until New York dealer Emil Herrmann reassembled the set in the 1940s.
Cellist Robert Maas, formerly of the Pro Arte Quartet, was looking to form a new string quartet, noticed the instuments and mentioned them to his sponser Anna Clark who bought them in 1946, giving the Paganini String Quartet its name.

When the Paganini String Quartet disbanded, the instruments were donated to the Corcoran Gallery of Arts in Washington D.C. and bought by the Nippon Music Foundation in 1994, who's loaned them to ensembles like the Tokyo String Quartet, the Hagen Quartet, the Quartetto di Cremona, and the Kuss Quartet.

I finished my piece! Here's the score and parts. It's a 5 minute long piece for string quartet, featuring only 5 notes (D Sharp, D Half Sharp, D Natural, D Half flat, and D Flat). It was really fun to write :)
