Some early development paintings I did for the opening of Across the Spiderverse. This was early 2020, before vulture had been designed, beige the style had been developed, before a lot of stuff. Included some sketches and alts here too.

No spoilers but I never thought anything could top the animation, color palettes, and the overall visuals of Into the Spiderverse but Across the Spiderverse absolutely did without a doubt in my mind. Just gorgeous animation and compositions all around and I can’t wait until it comes on dvd so I can pause and admire every single frame. Everyone who worked on character designs, backgrounds and lighting etc should be so so proud of the work they’ve done.

𝙰𝙴𝚂𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚃𝙸𝙲𝚂 . Ballet flats swapped out for a pair of Converse , rock music music blaring through earbuds , a secret love for electronics you’ll never let anyone see , a loose hoodie covering up your Spider suit , living for the attention the crowd gives you , just trying to do the right thing , random scientific facts thrown out in the middle of a conversation , using pencils to drum against any flat surface , empty energy drink cans littered around your desk.

𝙷𝙴𝙰𝙳𝙲𝙰𝙽𝙾𝙽𝚂 .

Gwen’s love of music was instilled in her by her mother , who passed away when Gwen was eight years old. She does enjoy newer music , but some of Gwen’s favorite bands and songs come from the 70′s and 80′s as that was what she and her mom would listen to together. Gwen’s mother knew she was sick , and for the birthday Gwen had just a month or two before her mother passed away , she gave Gwen an iPod with all their shared favorite songs on it. It’s Gwen’s most cherished possession , and the only person she’d let see it would be her dad.

Music and ballet were the vast majority of Gwen’s childhood. She took ballet lessons from the time she was five until she was nineteen , when she was bitten by the spider and decided to give it up to focus on being Spider-Woman. Music has just always been a hobby of hers , and though the drums have become Gwen’s favorite instrument to play , they aren’t the only one she knows how to play. She knows how to play the bass guitar , piano , violin , and ukulele. The ukulele was the first instrument her dad bought her.

Because of her friendship with Peter Parker , Gwen is a tad bit smarter than people would assume from a ballerina turned rock band member. An introvert at heart , Gwen was content with hanging out with Peter and letting him ramble about whatever he was researching , and she grew to enjoy some of the topics. She knows a surprising amount about biology and anatomy , and had even considered going to nursing school for when she’s no longer making music.  

Gwen was extremely close to the Peter Parker in her universe. From the time they were nine years old , Peter was Gwen’s first friend , and he remained her best friend up until his death. She grew close to Mary Jane and the other members of their band , but Peter just understood her , they were so close they didn’t even need to speak to understand each other. When Gwen was bitten by the spider , Peter was the only person she considered telling aside from her father , but she ultimately decided he was safer not knowing. But even then , when Peter became The Lizard and he died in his fight against Gwen , Gwen removed her mask so Peter knew he was in her arms , so he knew who she was. It’s been around a year since his death , and Gwen still harbors a lot of guilt for not being able to save him.

𝙰 𝙳𝙴𝙴𝙿𝙴𝚁 𝙻𝙾𝙾𝙺 .

𝙱𝙰𝙲𝙺𝙶𝚁𝙾𝚄𝙽𝙳 . Gwen is taken from the universe of Earth-65 , in which she was the person who was bitten by the radioactive spider and developed spider physiology as a result. She is taken from after the death of her universe’s Peter Parker , but before she’s thrown into the multi-verse and meets Miles Morales and the others.

𝚆𝙴𝙰𝙿𝙾𝙽𝚂 . Gwen uses a pair of web shooters , that essentially shoot out a material similar to a spider’s webbing , though it’s much more durable.

𝙿𝙾𝚆𝙴𝚁𝚂 / 𝙰𝙱𝙸𝙻𝙸𝚃𝙸𝙴𝚂 / 𝚂𝙺𝙸𝙻𝙻𝚂 . Gwen has the standard abilities of a Spider Person. She has superhuman strength , speed , agility , durability , and regenerative healing. She also has the Spider Sense , which allows her to sense danger before it’s a visible threat.

𝙶𝚁𝙴𝙰𝚃𝙴𝚂𝚃 𝚂𝚃𝚁𝙴𝙽𝙶𝚃𝙷 . Gwen’s greatest strength is her strong sense of justice. She isn’t someone who lets something go unpunished , including any acts of her own , but she isn’t ruthless about it , and she has a strong belief in justice being fair.

𝙶𝚁𝙴𝙰𝚃𝙴𝚂𝚃 𝚆𝙴𝙰𝙺𝙽𝙴𝚂𝚂 . Gwen’s greatest weakness would be how protective she can get , and the lengths she would go to protect those she cares about.

𝙾𝙽𝙴 𝙵𝙴𝙰𝚁 . Gwen’s greatest fear is being the reason someone close to her is gone. It happened with Peter , and ever since , she’d been terrified it’ll happen again.

𝙾𝙽𝙴 𝙷𝙾𝙿𝙴 . Gwen’s greatest hope would be to save everyone she can. She takes it hard when she can’t protect someone or save them , and her greatest hope is that she can help everyone she possibly can.

𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝚀𝚄𝙴𝚂𝚃𝙸𝙾𝙽𝙽𝙰𝙸𝚁𝙴 .

𝙷𝙾𝚆 𝙳𝙾𝙴𝚂 𝚈𝙾𝚄𝚁 𝙲𝙷𝙰𝚁𝙰𝙲𝚃𝙴𝚁 𝙵𝙴𝙴𝙻 𝙰𝙱𝙾𝚄𝚃 𝙱𝙴𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝙳𝚁𝙾𝙿𝙿𝙴𝙳 𝙸𝙽𝚃𝙾 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙲𝙰𝙼𝙱𝚁𝙸𝙰 𝙿𝚁𝙾𝙶𝚁𝙰𝙼? 𝙰𝚁𝙴 𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚈 𝙴𝚇𝙲𝙸𝚃𝙴𝙳? 𝚂𝚄𝚂𝙿𝙸𝙲𝙸𝙾𝚄𝚂? 𝙲𝙾𝙽𝙵𝚄𝚂𝙴𝙳?

As much as she missed home initially , Gwen was never angry about being pulled into the Cambria Program. There was a lot of suspicion , but never any anger or annoyance , and since then she’s settled into her role as tech support. She does still harbor a great amount of suspicion towards the ship’s captain , but she keeps that to herself.

𝚆𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝙳𝙾𝙴𝚂 𝚈𝙾𝚄𝚁 𝙲𝙷𝙰𝚁𝙰𝙲𝚃𝙴𝚁 𝙷𝙾𝙿𝙴 𝚃𝙾 𝚂𝙴𝙴 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙼𝙾𝚂𝚃 𝙳𝚄𝚁𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙲𝙰𝙼𝙱𝚁𝙸𝙰 𝙾𝙽𝙴’𝚂 𝙹𝙾𝚄𝚁𝙽𝙴𝚈?

She isn’t super invested in a whole lot going on with the journey , she’s honestly fine on the ship. She likes the routine of getting to do her job and then minding her business for the rest of the day.

She would like to have her suit and web shooters more than anything , but she’d also like to have her old iPod , the one that was given to her by her mother before she passed.

and here begins one of the more hotly debated topics in spider-man comics canon - what killed gwen stacy?

and honestly, i don't think that sounds fake. like i mean, i've never been thrown off a bridge before but like, the shock of that could probably kill me. i don't think that's fake at all. i'd have a fucking heart attack mid-air. yeah.

but there is the pointed. snap.

so, really, regardless of whether gwen was already dead or not, the snap is a reality. if she was alive or dead, it doesn't matter, so if the shock of the fall didn't kill her, the snap would've.

i kind of don't know why norman would say she was dead before the webbing reached her. it seems more in norman's diabolical brand to double down and tell peter that his webbing IS what killed gwen. but i think maybe this is another case of the writers and artists not being on the same page - same as how it's described as the george washington bridge

but the artists didn't get the memo. that bitch is not the george washington bridge.

that bitch is the brooklyn bridge!!

headcanon that i guess in 616 the brooklyn bridge is called the george washington bridge. sure. why not.

i figure the gwen "snap!" thing is another instance of the writers and artists just being on distinctly different pages. there's this very funny workflow in comics where they kind of give the artist a rough outline of the plot and the final dialogue isn't actually written until the comic is pencilled so there's always, always miscommunications between the writers and artists. where the artist draws the brooklyn bridge but the writer thinks it would be fun if actually it was the george washington bridge after the fact because get it. norman loves money. but in the synopsis it didn't actually matter what bridge it was so the artist just drew whatever the fuck bridge!!

so. i think it's the same with the snap. in the synopsis it probably says "gwen dies in the fall" - artist interprets it as whiplash, and draws it so. writer has the idea that actually, it's the shock that kills her. synopsis says "dies in the fall" and it doesn't actually matter how. point is she dies! however the fuck!

i'm honestly so obsessed with the running gag in spider-man comics where you know the writers and artists are on different pages. in two separate rooms doing two separate things. rereading the comics is so funny when you know that weird workflow and you see a scene where the art is saying one thing and the words are saying another. almost like a 4kids dub.

that's why you get such great moments such as the panel that has caused the most outrage in my activity feed. the brown/blue pants debate.

Spoilers for Across the Spider-Verse!

I just realized that our main trio all break canon in important ways! Miguel has all his focus on Miles because he’s probably the most obvious anomaly, but the other two aren’t traditional spider men either!

Peter Parker can get the girl, but he’s never getting a happily ever after. But Peter B. is!!! He’s happily married with a kid, resolves his marital issues and is currently living his best life. He had that period that seems to define what Miguel sees as the right place for a spider man to be, where he was sad and and suffering, but was still a hero. But he changed that! More importantly, Miles changed that!

And I should just be able to say the words « Gwen Stacy » and people get why she’s an anomaly. One of the many many great visual parallels the movie has is when Gwen is falling and Miles tries to catch her, like Spider-Man has done and failed a million times in a million worlds. But Miles saves her! Not only that, she also saves herself. Miles is also changing canon!

(Side note, I love how successful Spider-Gwen has been. The creators explicitly wanted a new generation to see Gwen as something other than ‘Peters dead girlfriend’ and they succeed!)

Ive seen people say similar things about the other spiders in Gwen’s group at the end, but these three were the most important and most obvious to me. God damn this movie rules and I can’t wait to go through it with a fine tooth comb

Spider-Man Across the Spiderverse is such a beautiful movie, here’s my favorite screenshots I took from it ^^

Making a post on Gwen’s design in Across the Spider-Verse because I’m surprised a lot of people didn’t notice the changes to it and its absolutely my favorite look Spider-Gwen has had, and I’m a person that overanalyzes Spider-Man costumes.

So here’s her original look, referring to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 images because its a pretty straight forward adaptation from the comic design. Mainly gonna note the webbing pattern on her inner arm that has a dark purple base and goes up to her shoulders with a small section on the sides of the chest, and flat blue soles. The white space also creates a Spider design that you can see on the back.

Then the first Spider-Verse film they modified it a bit. Made the base color of the webbing pattern a bright pink instead of a dark purple, got rid of the extra webbing on the torso, extended the black further up the suit, and added the popular ballet shoes. Kept all the major elements of the suit but made it less complicated and more unique.

In Across she starts with the above look, but when she shows up later its modified further. The webbing pattern on her arms is completely substituted with these arm warmer gloves. The chest design is changed further with the black reaching farther up and into an angle, with the back design more simplified. As pointed out in the movie, also switched to Chuck Taylors.

I love obsessively rewatching media because why did i just realize that Peters death in Gwen’s and Miles’ universes mirror each other, with the only difference being that while RIPeter spends his dying moments telling miles he needs to hide his face and keep his identity as Spider-Man a secret, 65 Peter tries to show Gwen that he knows that she is spider-woman and that it’s not something she has to hide from him

Went to see Across the Spiderverse…

I don’t have words for how beautiful and amazing the movie is. Definitely the favorite of the year. And one of the top EVER. This movie was pretty life changing, my hands were shaking as we left the theater and I’m so so normal about it.

So I decided to do a spoiler free drawing of my favorite girl Gwen!
