Scurvy on Bones
Scurvy is a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. Many people know that this disease leads to bleeding gums, loss of teeth, bleeding into the tongue, severe diarrhoea, dizziness, joint inflammation, fatigue and exhaustion and many other symptoms. Scurvy can also be detected in bones, which often helps a victim to prove the disease postmortem, as in the case of the members of the Franklin expedition. Here, too, care must be taken, as other diseases are also associated with the same symbtomatics.
Tumblr media
This old jawbone that was buried in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Belonged to Louis IX, king of France who died besieging Tunis during the Eighth Crusade in 1270, and he had scurvy. (x)
The sections I marked show what scurvy looks like on the bone. You can recognise it by the layers of new bone that grow on the normal bone surface. This bone, however, is not smooth, but normally looks like a sponge with many small holes, it just looks very porous. Especially in the jaw area, the bone recedes and literally breaks away and is no longer able to hold the teeth. But what does scurvy do to the bones?
Tumblr media
Example of definite diagnostic scorbutic traits—porotic lesions to the greater wing of the sphenoid (10–11 year old child) (left) and porous bone formation on the posterior surface of the maxillary body (9–10 year old child) (right) Both are from Irland, 19th century (x)
The bones with scurvy lack collagen. The lack of collagen causes tiny blood vessels called capillaries to bleed because they become very weak. The blood signals the bone to heal, so the bone tries to make new bone. This process is similar to what happens when a bone breaks or fractures.  However, because this bone lacks collagen, it does not become strong enough and, as mentioned above, looks like a porous sponge. And you can see this particularly well in the typical places like the jaw.
Tumblr media
Cibra Orbitala in the eye sockets of an adult (x)
But it can also occur in other parts of the body, for example in the area of the forehead or the eye sockets ( called cibra orbitala, which can also simply occur a severe anaemia or other deficiency disease).

Hello! I’m not sure if this is allowed — so please feel free to decline if you feel uncomfortable — but do you mind doing a scaramouche with an s/o who has anorexia? I’ve been feeling down and need some comfort...but besides that — please take care of yourself! <3 Also, I love your work! <<33
Scaramouche with an Anorexic S/O
cw: descriptions of anorexia/ED, starvation, unhealthy views/thoughts, negative body image **please stay safe and heed the trigger warnings if this sort of content bothers you! note - I hope you’ll feel better, anon! please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to talk :D remember to eat three meals a day and drink water! <3 don’t forget to take any vitamins or medicines you may require!
You’re stuck looking in the mirror again, pinching your waist and closing your fingers around your wrist. Scaramouche has caught you ogling at yourself in the mirror before, but he’s never really thought much of it.
He’s always busy, so he isn’t too concerned over your behavior at first. He doesn’t really find it odd when you claim to have already eaten when he visits. In fact, you always seem to have eaten in advance.
The more he’ll ask to take you to fancy restaurants or cute cafés, the more you’ll insist that you’re not hungry. It gets him rather frustrated because he wants to spend time with you on these fun dates, but every time he tries to ask you’ll decline.
You don’t mean to upset him. You’re just not exactly comfortable with food for your own reasons and you explain that you’ve got a small appetite, claiming that you don’t want him to waste his money on large portions you’ll be unable to finish.
But Scaramouche doesn’t care about money; he’s got more than enough to spare on his beloved. Once he starts suggesting dates that have nothing to do with food, you perk up, seemingly more relaxed over the fact that you won’t have to eat anything.
You may not realize it, but Scaramouche is observing your every reaction like a hawk, not entirely sure what will become of his findings. It’s clear that you have an issue with food; you did mention having a small appetite. But then he’s looking beyond food and he’ll notice that your clothes are a few sizes larger.
The baggy style obscures your body type, allowing you to hide deep within the sleeves. He’s seen similar styles before, but he never thought you were interested in that type of fashion as well.
When the two of you are out and about, you’ll stare longingly at passersby who have an ideal body based on your standards.
Scaramouche decides to finally ask you about it when he catches you idling in front of the mirror. He’ll bring up every odd thing he’s noticed thus far and will want a thorough explanation so he can understand just what’s been going on with you.
You’re fumbling for a response, trying to come up with a proper excuse that’ll fool him. It’s hard to lie to your lover, especially since he looks genuinely concerned.
And when he grabs your wrist to get you to look at him, feeling stiff bone rather than the soft flesh of your wrist, his entire body freezes. He knows something’s wrong when you pull away, holding your arm as if it’s broken.
“Have you been eating properly? You don’t look so well.” Now he’s actually taking in your facial features and how rigid and bony they seem. You’re not the vibrantly healthy person you once were—you resemble a skeleton, sharp joints and gaunt cheekbones.
You don’t even have time to defend yourself because he’s talking over you, sounding so scared and angry at the same time.
“Why haven’t you been eating? You’ll wither away into nothing if you keep starving yourself! Is this what you want? Do you know how dangerous that is?”
You’ve never seen Scaramouche in such a frazzled state before. He’s usually composed, easily able to calculate a solution to any problem rather than fretting over it.
And yet when he sees you looking so frail and thin, he feels unbelievably sad, conflicted over the fact that he shouldn’t have let his own work consume his thoughts.
You’ll have to explain your anorexia to him and why you limit your caloric intake so much. It’s all to achieve an ideal body type, as you believe yours is flawed and gross. It’s not the type anyone would want. Hearing you talk about your own body as if it’s a monster is horrible, and Scaramouche will pull your trembling form in for a comforting hug.
The road to recovery is long and rocky and there are moments where you slip back into your anorexia, comforted by the fact that you’ll be as light as a feather and as skinny as every handsome and pretty person in Liyue.
But Scaramouche doesn’t care about what you look like because you’re already perfect in his eyes. He loves you for you. He’ll tell you not to worry about what other people look like and that you don’t need to change yourself in unhealthy ways.
There’s nothing weird or unsavory about your body; it’s great as it is and if you continue to starve yourself it won’t be strong enough to support you and you’ll die.
That’s one of many wake-up calls for you, as the last thing you want is to be separated from your caring lover. So you agree to do your best while in recovery, even though it’s such a grueling task.
Scaramouche is supporting you every step of the way. He doesn’t force you to eat much, but he’ll watch and make sure you can at least finish half of what’s on your plate without feeling sick or hating yourself for gaining weight.
It’s hard to reach your healthy weight goal, especially when you’re so scared of it. But you try your best so that Scaramouche won’t have to feel so worried whenever he isn’t around. His support definitely comforts you and even though it takes some time before you’re able to eat normally, you’re eternally relieved that he’s helping you through this.
And when you finally eat your first whole meal without dreading the thought of weight gain or how you’ll have to shed all of that excess weight, he’s incredibly happy and proud of you. When you see how bright his smile is as he sees the empty plate, you realize you couldn’t have gotten this far without his overflowing love and support.

The Causes and Treatment Options for Hip Pain
The Causes and Treatment Options for Hip Pain
The Causes and Treatment Options for Hip Pain
Hip pain can be described as sharp, aching or burning. It can be mild or severe.
Many things can cause hip pain.
This article will provide information on the possible causes of hip pain. In addition, this article will provide information about the possible causes of hip pain and the treatment options to remedy them.
Tumblr media
Causes
The hip is a large “ball-and-socket” joint. The “socket”, a bone found in your pelvis, is called the Acetabulum. The “ball” is the head of your femur. It is the top part of your leg’s long bone.
The cartilage is a smooth, white, cushioning tissue that covers the hip joint and allows it to move easily.
There are several common types of pain that you might experience.
There are two possible causes for pain: if it is located on one side of your hip (lateral pain) or the other (posterior pain), there may be another reason. Problems with the muscles, ligaments, and tendons surrounding the hip joint are usually caused by muscle, nerves, or nerves.
Posterior hip pain
The pain in the posterior hip is located outside the hip or around the buttocks. A problem often causes it in the muscles, ligaments, or tendons surrounding the hip joint.
Hamstring Muscle Strain
Small tears in the muscle can be caused by a quick twist of the arm or pull on the muscle. For example, this happens to the hamstring muscles around your hip joint. It can cause buttock pain or pain in the back.
Sacroiliac Joint Problem
The Sacroiliac (S.I. joint) connects the lower spine and the pelvis. There are one on each side.
There are many issues with the S.I. joint. These include arthritis, injury to the ligaments and infection. This sharp, burning pain can often worsen when you stand or walk. The pain may radiate from the hip to the back of your leg.
Treatment
Your healthcare provider will diagnose your hip pain. Your healthcare provider will determine the best treatment for your hip pain.
Strategies for Self-Care
Your healthcare provider may recommend several self-care options. These strategies allow you to be involved in managing your hip pain.
These strategies are just a few examples:
Avoid activities that cause your hip pain, such as climbing stairs.
To improve mobility and independence, use a cane or walker.
The R.I.C.E. Protocol: Follow the R.I.C.E. protocol if you feel hip pain during any sport or activity.
Medications
Many medications can be used to relieve hip pain. These medications include osteoarthritis, femoroacetabular impediment, and Tylenol (acetaminophen).
Depending on the diagnosis, you may need other drugs. For example, to treat rheumatoid arthritis, a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (D.M.A.R.D.) may be used. In addition, an intravenous (IV) antibiotic can be used to treat an affected joint.
Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy is an important part of treatment for many causes.
To soothe swelling in your hip, a physical therapist might use heat, ultrasound, heat and ice. They can also guide when and how safe it is to return to other sports or activities.
Exercises to Keep Your Hips Strong and Mobile
Surgery
Sometimes, surgery may be necessary for hip pain, such as a fracture.
A Review of Total Hip Replacement
Prevention
While you may not be able to prevent all cases, there are some things you can do. These include
If you’re overweight or obese, losing weight is possible
A healthy diet rich in vitamin D and calcium is essential for bone health
Choose low-impact activities such as swimming or biking
Stretching before and afterwards
If you have leg-length differences, you can get a special insert for your shoes.
Running shoes that are comfortable and durable, such as running shoes made of rubber or nylon, is key to avoiding asphalt and other hard surfaces.
Discuss daily strength exercises with your healthcare provider
Consider yoga or Tai Chi to increase balance and prevent falls
Recap
The diagnosis of the root cause of hip pain is key to finding the best treatment. Sometimes, medication and physical therapy may be helpful. In some cases, surgery may be necessary. You can prevent hip pain by taking steps to reduce it.
Summary
Anterior (front), lateral, or posterior (back) are the most common locations for hip pain. Information about the cause of the pain can be found at the location.
There are many possible causes, including muscle strains or osteoarthritis. Your healthcare provider must diagnose the condition to ensure that the correct treatment is provided.
If your hip pain becomes severe or sudden, don’t delay seeing a healthcare provider. This is especially true if your hip pain is severe or accompanied by fever and swelling.
A word from Sarwarpro
Hip pain can have a direct effect on your quality of life. It can be frustrating to go through the process to discover why. Keep your cool and be positive throughout the treatment process.

Signs of underactivity: An underactive 7th chakra is regular: every human has an underactive 7th chakra. Indications consist of inability to focus, imagining, as well as not residing in today. Migraines, misconceptions, as well as tight joints.
Healing the 7th chakra: Straightening this chakra is best done with reflection and also stabilizing the other 6 chakras. Add daily exterior strolls to your regimen, concentrate on being existing, and cultivate gratitude.
Meditation: advised without a mantra. Usage affirmations such as I am present, I am here, I am connected.

Essential oils: sandalwood, geranium, myrrh
Supportive foods: Water soaked up through the skin, sesame or chia seeds, bone broth, topical necessary oils, and also aloe vera juice. Because this chakra is tied to the spiritual, the crown chakra is probably to gain from sunlight, fresh air, and silent meditation.

‘There is no health without mental health’: an interview with Dr Naomi Newman-Beinart, PHD, Nutritionist (BSc) & Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol) (PhD)
Dr Naomi Newman-Beinart, Member of the CThA & Division of Health Psychology, BPS
Interview by Julia Nelson
Having access to educational information online is a real gift, but with all that’s out there, it’s always good to pick the brain of an expert to avoid getting lost in content. We had the pleasure of chatting to Dr Naomi Newman-Beinart on how to look after ourselves age 40+. Someone had to!
What is the secret to good health?
In my opinion, it's all about mindset. I always say that there is no health without mental health (it's true!). Funnily enough, I am trying to get Instagram going (it's not as easy as it sounds!) and my post yesterday was all about this, I was saying that it's obviously a brilliant idea to try and eat a healthy and varied diet (and I am super excited that new research shows that eating your 5 a day specifically 3 veg and 3 fruit - means you're more likely to live longer and less likely to have chronic illnesses as you get older). BUT I always try and focus on how I feel when I get up each day. Do you wake up feeling positive and energised? Or wake up dreading your day? Or wake up somewhere in the middle.....
No-one is expected to feel amazing 100% of the time. But it’s really important to do some things for YOU and to make sure that you aren’t struggling more than is necessary with daily stresses.
These are a few things I try to help feel better at the start of each day:
Stay in touch with people.
Increase movement and exercise.
Focus on the here and now.
Be kind to yourself and others.
Learn something new.
This advice is even more important given the global events of the past 18 months I would say.
How should women age 40+ take care of their health and wellbeing?
I think that it is really important that women are given more information about their hormonal health from the age of 40. The NHS usually do a health review for over 40's health for men and women, but this doesn’t cover hormonal changes or changes in bone density that women start to experience by this point in life. I think that as long as women are aware of hormonal changes in peri-menopause and what symptoms to look out for, and consider the fact that if they haven't already, it's time to get back into exercise - even walking, and trying to eat healthily most of the time, not always - reducing booze but still having fun, and considering any genetic illnesses that might rear their ugly heads at some point (e.g. osteoporosis - it may be time to start taking Vitamin D and think about calcium and collagen containing foods etc)
Do supplements work and do you recommend taking multivitamins every day?
I am a fan of trying to get everything you can from food, but I believe that as you get older you may struggle with a less effective digestive system and you may have more 'issues' that supplements could help with. For example, I take borage oil for hormonal health and I find it really effective, but I didn't need it when I was 25. I personally take a multivitamin most days, as I like to get my B vitamins and minerals, but I always say that it's important to get a decent quality multivitamin and not buy the cheap ones that are using poor quality ingredients and lots of fillers.
Should your blood type determine what sort of food you should be eating? i.e pescatarian diet
I tend to make my recommendations based on science when research is available, and research into blood type diets does not show that it works as such. BUT saying that, the diets recommended by blood type are generally better than most diets, so most people should feel an improvement when they try a blood type diet. I do have a few patients who swear that the blood type diet has worked for them, and if you find a healthy and workable diet that suits you, than go for it. But don't try and follow a diet that you feel you should be following if you feel bad on it or it's making you mentally struggle.
If you have a chronic health condition like osteoarthritis or Hashimoto thyroiditis for example should you tailor your diet accordingly and take specific supplements?
Yes, absolutely. You don't have to make massive changes if you already eat a good diet (e.g a Mediterranean type diet), so to aid joint health I would suggest thinking about Omega 3 and turmeric (for example) in your diet and also think about foods that cause your joint pain to flare up, and avoid those where possible. A lot of people find that tomatoes and potatoes (to name a few) cause arthritis symptoms to flare up and avoiding them can reduce pain and improve mobility. I love marine collagen powder (I take Correxiko's Marine Collagen powder every day!) to help improve my general health. I love that collagen research is very well carried out and shows great results for osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, which makes sense, as collagen plays a huge role in the health of all of our organs and joints and bones.
Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) - So there is some good research showing that people with thyroid issues may be deficient in certain nutrients and Vitamin D, selenium, zinc, iron and B12 are a few of them. In fact, low Vitamin D levels have been associated with worse symptoms for people with HT. I would suggest eating a varied and healthy diet (as I tell everyone!) but even more so in the case of people who are diagnosed when they are young (under 50). The longer you can go with symptoms that don't affect your daily life, the better! And eating a healthy diet has been shown time and time again to reduce the likelihood of various chronic illnesses, which you really want to reduce the risk of! Again, like with any diagnosed condition, find out what works best for you and what foods might worsen your symptoms so you know what to avoid.
Obviously if anyone is on medication, always check with your healthcare professional before taking supplements as they may interfere with your meds or not be suitable to take with your condition.
How can you get tested for food intolerances / allergies?
Yes, you can ask your GP, or you can go privately, to have allergy tests. With regards to food intolerances, I don't feel that there are any very effective tests, as you are testing something quite different than when you are testing for food allergies. I tend to suggest working together with a nutritionist, or dietitian to organise an avoidance diet to help you figure out what foods lead to negative symptoms of food intolerance.
Should women aged 40 and over have regular general health checks and who does these? Can you recommend where to go for a general health check?
Yes! I think that it is really important to keep on top of your health and to talk to your GP if you have any issues. Breast checks are very important, as are bone density scans, full blood count (including fasting glucose) and blood pressure. Pay attention to any urinary tract infections as you'll want to nip these in the bud asap to reduce the risk of kidney infection or even sepsis - these are much more common as you hit the peri-menopausal stage (age 42-48 or so).
You can pay privately to have many more tests done and that is your decision if you are able to, but as long as you keep on top of your diet and exercise and the checks mentioned here, your GP should be able to help you with any health issues that crop up.
How would you recommend prioritising your health and wellbeing?
I am a big ambassador for kindness. I believe that if you are kind to others then it comes back to you in terms of mental health. And that brings me back to suggesting that people focus on their mental health as a priority. It's also important to consider that research has found that people who eat more unhealthy foods are more likely to report moderate to severe psychological distress - so if you are able to try and eat healthily, one meal at a time, I would hope that you would start to feel better emotionally and then be more likely to make good decisions about exercise. That is how we build healthy habits :). I am a chartered psychologist specialising in health psychology and I find this works so well with my nutrition degree.
Nowadays there’s such a strong focus on living a healthy life, and it can be daunting and to be honest, a little bit scary…..
Don’t stress. Just take one day at a time and think about one healthy choice at a time. This can be a useful way to think about diet, exercise and emotional health.
We promote ethical lifestyle brands and green living, can you tell us what ethical lifestyle brands you like and use?
I have used so many over the years and good ethics is VERY important to me when it comes to brands that I use. I love Correxiko, as mentioned earlier. I also LOVE Uralix as I think that they have a wonderful outlook and the owner really wants to help women with urinary tract infections (which are so awful!) and this is 100% why she invented the product. I love Higher Nature products - I am currently using their 'relax kids' powder at bed every night (for me!), but all of their products are fab. And I love Greenspring matcha tea powder as I love and need the theanine that you get naturally from matcha tea. Ooooooh I also love medicinal mushrooms and Hifas da Terra are a wonderful and highly ethical company that do fantastic mushroom research to help people with ailments that are not necessarily being helped enough by medications.
How can women feel confident and positive about their health?
Don't make changes for anyone else, make them for yourself. You don't have to calorie count and be a size 8-10 to feel great. As long as you are doing your best to live a healthy life, you don't have to be perfect everyday! Don't deny yourself when you want a glass of wine or a treat and don't put everyone else first, you have to come first too. Try and focus on the here and now and what you can do right now that will make you happy and as you act positively, it will help you build healthy habits (that's the psychologist in me talking.....).

Note
Do you happen to have any medical hcs for the gym leaders (& Leon if you want)??
My mom is a doctor and my sister is in medical school so I’m surrounded by medical stuff like this all the time
Milo
Had asthma when he was a kid, but doesn’t anymore
He’s very very healthy. He gets lots of exercise and has a very good diet
Nessa
She’s a little underweight but only by two or three pounds - she still eats a healthy diet
Since she’s a swimmer as well as a gym leader, she gets a lot of exercise
She’s under too much stress and sometimes that can give her both physical and psychological symptoms if she doesn’t take the time to recharge
Kabu
Diagnosed with high blood pressure but controls it well enough through diet and exercise that he doesn’t need prescription medication
Has mild scoliosis - enough to give him some mild back pain but not enough to need corrective surgery
Gets the ‘Old Man Aches’ sometimes - his bones just hurt from him getting older
Opal
For an 88 year old woman, she’s in amazing shape.
I hc that she’s at least partially blind - look at her pupils, it looks like she has cataracts - that’s why she uses her umbrella as a cane
She’s responsible when it comes to her health - she goes for regular check ups and makes sure she’s as active as she can be
She loves to swim as exercise it’s less stress on her joints
She does have some old age related illnesses like osteoporosis and arthritis
Allister
Physically, a very healthy, normal child
Psychologically I worry about this child. I hc that he has an anxiety disorder, maybe social anxiety?
He does regularly talk to a therapist, though he’s worried he’s not making progress
Having pokemon around helps him feel more at ease
Bea
The pinnacle of human health.
Because she fights professionally, she’s incredibly athletic.
She did tear her ACL once and that was really rough, but she recovered pretty quickly.
Because she’s a martial artist, she suffers a lot of minor injuries like bruises and cuts. She has broken bones before but that’s pretty rare and she’s still young so she heals fast.
Has to eat a lot of protein to keep up with both the martial arts and the pokemon training - lots and lots of chicken and fish.
Gordie
Training rock pokemon is very physically strenuous so he gets lots of minor injuries
Because of that, he’s really good at performing first aid on himself
He’s pretty healthy, he’s allergic to soybeans but that’s about it
He is worried about his knees, since he goes hiking a lot. Downhill hiking is torture on your knees
Melony
Some mild back problems
We have no idea how old she is, so I’m going to hc that she’s about 40? And Gordie is 20 so she had him when she was 20.
She had her kids really young, that was a lot of stress on her
She’s pretty healthy but she does like to indulge sometimes
Piers
He’s also a little bit underweight, but not by a lot and he doesn’t undereat. His body is just like that.
He does worry, since he knows being underweight can put him at risk for some bad stuff but nothing bad has happened yet and he does eat enough calories so like… whatever
He doesn’t go outside a lot, so he’s vitamin D deficient
Raihan
Raihan pole dances and mountain bikes both of which are great exercise
He has a strong affinity for carbs but he does eat enough vegetables to function so he’s fine
He suffered from low self esteem when he was younger, training pokemon has helped with that a lot
Leon
Young and healthy
He’s a champion and he travels a lot so maybe some vitamin deficiencies? but that could be fixed with a better diet
He’s under a lot of stress, he needs to take more time to relax for his mental and physical health.
