At one point, Mrs. Jun said that she was missing something in the character of Vanitas and when she asked her friend for advice, he said that he was very much in the style of her main characters. When asked to present his vision of the main character's appearance HE SUGGESTED THIS HAIRSTYLE

Jun ultimately rejected it BUT some of it was preserved in Vanitas' bangs! As you'll notice earlier, his hair was much messier and then it started to look more cut

MANGA RECS:

1: The Case Study of Vanitas (Vanitas no Carte)

I knowww it's a cliche that BSD fans must also enjoy VNC, but it's genuinely just AHH so good!! it currently sits at 62.5 chapters (10 volumes & 9 uncollected chapters) and it has a 2-season anime adaptation. it's the second manga series by Jun Mochizuki, who's also well-known for her series Pandora Hearts, and is still ongoing.

set in 19th-century France, our story begins with Noe, a young vampire, who's excitedly travelling to Paris for the first time. in his travels, he encounters the strange and enigmatic Vanitas, a human who somehow possesses the power of the Vampire of the Blue Moon- a feared being shunned by the rest of the vampire world.

we learn from the very beginning that Noe is recounting this story to us, and that he kills Vanitas with his own hands- but why? how? nobody knows, but we're bound to find out!

2. Attack on Titan

I doubt anyone was expecting me to mention this one, because it has quite a reputation for being gore-filled and action-packed, but when I say this literally changed my life I'm really not kidding (I wouldn't have this blog or be into anime at all if not for AOT!). it's a completed story, with a four-season anime (including 3 OVA episodes) and 139 manga chapters (in the main storyline; there are multiple spin-offs and 2 bonus mangas/light novels).

many years ago, the final remnants of humanity were forced to flee into a city surrounded by three giant walls. these walls are the only things keeping humanity from perishing at the hand of the titans, giant humanoid figures who hunt and eat them. but a young boy, Eren, wants nothing more than to see the world beyond the wall- until a titan taller than their walls breaks into the city, throwing humanity (and Eren's life) into disarray.

though it's true that a large chunk of this animanga is action, the lore is incredible. I can't say too much without spoiling, but the thought-provoking aspects aren't talked about nearly as much as I think they should be. once you've finished watching or reading, I highly recommend you watch this video, which is one of my favourite video essays of all time!

BOOK RECS:

1. Slaughterhouse Five

this is one of my favourite books of all time, and it's only 177 pages, so it's a super quick read! not only is it severely anti-war, but it's deeply though-provoking. I think about it every day. I quote it regularly. I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone, especially now, with everything happening in the world.

I honestly don't have words for how much I love it, so here's the synopsis on Goodreads:

Prisoner of war, optometrist, time-traveller - these are the life roles of Billy Pilgrim, hero of this miraculously moving, bitter and funny story of innocence faced with apocalypse. Slaughterhouse 5 is one of the world's great anti-war books. Centring on the infamous fire-bombing of Dresden in the Second World War, Billy Pilgrim's odyssey through time reflects the journey of our own fractured lives as we search for meaning in what we are afraid to know.

2. No Longer Human

there are so many editions of this, and I would recommend all of them- this is my other favourite book of all time, by the way. I may be barking up the wrong tree when I tell a BSD fan to read Dazai, one of the most accessible and relatable Japanese authors for a Western audience, but hey, I've got to remind you just in case you haven't given it a shot.

No Longer Human follows the life of Yozo Oba, a boy born into a big rich family, who constantly feels at-odds with the world around him. it's an exploration of mental illness, social isolation, self-expression, and compassion. I actually have an entire youtube video talking about it and how BSD-Dazai reflects Yozo as much as irl-Dazai, and it's my pride and joy so please go watch it!

I really need more people to watch this actually because holy shit it was amazing and nobody talks about it!! WATCH IT!!! PLEASE!!!!

the twists in this are actually insane. I can't tell you anything aside from the synopsis without spoiling major plot points. if you only take one recommendation I bed you to take this one.

To be fair, there are some differences between the anime ep 18 and the manga ch 58 (FROM Astolfo getting the knife from his father TO the vampire calling him foolish). I remember Sensei? uploaded some of her rough sketches for the anime script, but I cannot go dig and find the link myself right now, sorry!

About the bonus manga for BD/DVD - I remember there were some page(s?) that Astolfo tells Olivier about his new vampire “friend” and Olivier recalls young Roland and himself. Which is now explicitly connected to the manga ch 58 (NOT the same drawings, I think?), where Olivier confesses he knew about Astolfo’s secret vampire “friend” but failed to see the danger because of his childhood memory with Roland. (Please do NOT ask me where to read the bonus manga, I myself have no idea!)

I thought Sensei told the anime staff beforehand about her full plans for the unfinished (at that time) Amusement Park arc and only it (which was already quite insane speed tbh asdfg). NOW I see she told them even further (than Noe/Vani roof scene in ch 55(!)) - more details about Astolfo’s parents and vampire “friend” in ch 58. No wonder she was SOOO busy over the anime...

It’s also clear that she already has her plans ready for future plots, at least by some level :’))) I saw some worry about the possibility that she might “run out of plot ideas” and so give up on continuing her own VNC, but honestly it’s the last thing to worry about in regards to VNC and Sensei, oops XD I mean, please don’t underestimate her (and her works, including the bonus created by her) XDD

Both things, the umbrella and the small pipe, have a lot of history and I will mention it briefly so as not to take up much of your time. Vanitas was originally a vampire and that's why he carried an umbrella for protection from the sun, and that's such a sweet concept in my opinion shsjnsndbdka The thing about the pipe is that Jun, wanting to show that he is older, gave him a small pipe around his neck

Jun wrote that when she looked at it she thought it was "a character that Jun Mochizuki would definitely like"

Hello! I usually buy new VnC chapters (via Gangan Joker) on seymour/cmoa. However, volume 11 isn't on there yet in any form. I've done some hunting around elsewhere, but navigating Japanese sites besides cmoa is also a bit out of my comfort zone, so I may have missed something.

G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?

I have certainly had OTPs in my time and am an enjoyer of shipping. Trying to think back on what the first ship I was properly interested in I think it might’ve been contestshipping? So Drew and May from the pokémon anime! It's been a long time since I've watched any of the Hoenn stuff but I remember he always gave her roses and I thought that was cute. They had a rivalry from what I remember and I tend to like rival ships. Though in saying that I don't ship every rival ship in pokémon obviously because there's so many rivalries in this series. Rival is probably the most common character dynamic in pkmn lol. I can't remember much more about contestshipping it's been so long! On a side note ship names in the pokémon fandom are insane it's always [noun]shipping and I hate it. I can't believe I remembered May and Drew's ship name after all these years.

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

This is a rather difficult question. I might cop out and say I'm pretty fond of Oz's development in Pandora Hearts. It's my favourite story for a reason and Oz as the main character is deeply connected to the overall themes of ph. His journey was very emotionally resonant to me and generally pretty well constructed. Elliot may be my favourite ph character and not Oz but I wouldn't say he has anything like the development Oz had. Oz's development was dramatic but well-paced so comparing Oz at different points in the story is really interesting. Definitely a character arc that meant a lot to me at age 14.

V - Which character do you relate to most?

At the current stage of my life, having just finished university and being a 20-something very stressed and uncertain about the future, I'm currently finding characters in similar states to be particularly relatable. So at this exact moment I might relate to any character in a similar situation. But as general answer that won't come as that much of a surprise and isn't quite as revealing as other answers I could provide I find Chloé d'Apchier pretty relatable in a lot of ways.

Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)

Apropos of nothing I think Mochijun's works being defined as shounen is interesting. I know both Pandora Hearts and VnC were/are published in shounen magazines and both have a "shounen" artstyle and tropes associated with the demographic but disregarding all that her main audience seems to be women not men. I could say anecdotally that most Mochijun fans I've interacted with are women but I understand that doesn't prove anything. What does seem like compelling evidence is the sort of merch produced for her series.

There's rarely anything produced for the female characters and certainly not on the scale of merch produced for the male characters. Looking at just vnc anime merch it's insane that the chasseurs were included in merch more often than Domi/Jeanne. If vnc had a more male-dominated audience I feel like we'd definitely see more waifu merch. We can also look at the ph 15th anniversary café. Not only did Break get a plushie while Alice didn't but originally the acrylic stands they were selling were only of the male characters. Sharon, Alice and Echo only got acrylic stands after the other merch sold well. I remember (I think before the vnc anime released) there was an interview with the director Itamura where he paid lipservice to the existence of a large female fanbase. Not sure where that interview is but I promise it exists. I don't really have a point here lol.

4. Fav character/subject that’s a bitch to draw:

Zhou Ying from Tai Sui!! I know he's literally a book character with no specific canon appearance, but I accidentally created a massive challenge for myself in designing/drawing him lmao.

I really like the face I've landed on for drawing Xi Ping from the same novel, and since he's supposed to be beautiful in a sharp, overbearing type of way, I tend to draw him with a thinner face and a very prominent chin and cheekbones. And I think that look suits him! The problem with that is that Zhou Ying is supposed to look a lot like Xi Ping, especially in the lower part of their faces, except, especially early in the novel, he's also notably thinner and frailer. He's also got his sort of spooky, all-knowing placid eyes. Yet he's supposed to be beautiful! How do I take a face that's already 70% chin and cheekbones, make it even bonier to an unhealthy degree, give it unsettling eyes, and yet retain the sense of beauty? I haven't quite figured that out yet lmao.

I also struggle a lot with either emulating Jun Mochizuki's art style or translating her character designs to my own, which I why I rarely draw fanart for VnC despite absolutely adoring the series. I'm trying to get better at that though!

7. A medium of art you don’t work in but appreciate

Two answers here. The most immediate and obvious one is digital art in general, since I work pretty much entirely traditionally. I'm always so impressed by the kinds of lighting and color effects that I see in work by people with access to things like photoshop layer adjustments. I know "digital art" is almost an absurdly broad category, but god there are some very impressive pieces out there done entirely with my good friend the computer.

Also, I adore papercraft/papercut art. Every time I see something really intricate made out of cut paper, my brain just, like, short-circuits in awe. It's so cool!! Speaking of Tai Sui, one of my all time favorite pieces of Tai Sui art is this Xi Ping by Yutaan here on tumblr. If you really want to see some really cool papercraft, Yutaan's stuff in general is incredible imo.

17. Do you eat/drink when drawing? if so, what

Not really, no. Since I'm almost entirely a traditional artist, I'm really paranoid about food getting stains on my paper 😔. Even stuff you think is stain free, like, say, a pretzel, can result in unexpected grease spots if you're not careful. So I generally try to keep snack time far away from whatever I'm drawing.

I do drink water when I draw, since I'm pretty much always drinking water no matter what I'm up to, but I have to be careful to keep the glass somewhere that I'm confident can't spill onto my paper. I've definitely gotten water stains on a lot of sketchbook pages in the past lol.

21. Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways

I was just talking about this with some friends last night! One of my oldest and dearest friends is the artist troubled cryst, which I find hilarious because our art processes are exact polar opposites lmao. I am an incredibly slow artist, prone to spending hours inking fairly simple drawings as I fuss over line weights and try to perfect tiny details in pencil before I ink them. I lean hard into the fussy and painstaking side of things. I also just adore black ink and will fit about as much of it into a drawing as I can. The ink is very much the main character for me, and color's just kind of a bonus.

Meanwhile, my bestie Meg Troubledcryst is, in the best possible way, kind of fast and loose as an artist. Her pieces are full of color and movement, with an emphasis on that expressive motion, and her lineart tends to be on the free and sketchy side. I know from talking to her that she hates to spend too long fussing over any one drawing or any one part of a drawing if she can avoid it. She can probably crank out two fully colored, good-looking pieces in the time it'd take me to do one effortful round of lineart lmao. But I love her stuff! I think it's really cute that we're such different artists even though I more or less started learning how to draw as a tween because of her art.

I also adore paintings that do a lot of work with light and color, despite the fact that I am, as established, a black ink girlie in my own art. Current obsessions are these sky paintings by autoneurotic and these oranges by itsc.

In the interest of not revealing myself by listing a more niche favorite, I'll say that we share JJK as a favorite! I also love VNC and Shiguang Dailiren🙏We share a lot of ships and favorite characters too, bless😂. 86 is on my list, but I haven't quite gotten around to watching it.

What do you look for in an animanga before starting it? What is something that immediately hooks you on an animanga? Do you try to read or watch first, or does it matter to you?

i think it's different each time! sometimes i'm drawn by the premise, or an interesting character design, or even the animation / art style! it doesn't have to be all of these at once, but i think in general i'm more drawn to action / fantasy / supernatural genres with really fleshed out characters!

What is something that immediately hooks you on an animanga?

interesting character dynamics for sure! not necessarily ship stuff although that's always a bonus lol. i'm a sucker for the found family trope or even just well-developed friendships! it just gets to me you know? 🥺💕

also when you can just TELL that the narrative is hinting at a really profound backstory and it slowly gets to unravel is SO good! my brain always tends to latch on to at least one pathetic wet cat of a man and that kind of fuels me through consuming content 😂😭 oh and i absolutely LOVE seeing deranged female characters as well 🥰

Do you try to read or watch first, or does it matter to you?

in general i always try to read first but i'm a bit more flexible when it comes to anime! when i come across a really good one sometimes i'll pause watching so i can go and read the manga first. although full disclosure i haven't read that much manga bc i always have trouble with the websites i use to read them and i'm lowkey scared they'll give my laptop a virus 😭 but i've been meaning to read more manga for sure! do you happen to have any recs??
