Vorag the Kaitogen Sculpture Process

Hey guys!

I just finished this badboy yesterday and wanted to go through the process of making him. This isn't really a tutorial, but more of a walk through.I do want to mention, before you give a critique, I ask that you please read through the entire thing before commenting, I'll be giving self-critiques and most likely I cover what needs to be critiqued. That aside, I'll be more than happy to take on critiques!

To start things off, here's the drawn version of Vorag. I started this drawing in the beginning of this year and worked on it a week after the drawing was finished.

Backstory: The Kaitogon species are cursed humans who sold their souls for strength and power to the Elder Dragon. Each Kaitogon are assigned new names from their reborning and their memories of their past lives are completely vanished.

Time for the process:

So this is what I'm starting off with. As you can see, not really much for this custom/sculpture.

Originally, I was going to use the body and arms for another sculpture (Tyvesses-who's also apart of this series. Click here to check out that process on twitter) however the body got way too bulky for Ty. I ended up using a spiderman action figure for the rest of the body which then leaves us with spiderman's head and hands (I ended up not using the legs). I will have to make the rest of the body from scratch.

I was debating on how I want to display Vorag until I decided to give him a platform to be on. This helps with the posing since I don't have to rely on him standing on his own. I used old casting mold to create the shape of the platform. and from there, I used plaster wraps to obtain the shape and make it all uniform together.

So here's the controversial side. The moldings made the platform too heavy and I knew that would be an issue for the long run. If I were to just remove the molds, the plaster by itself would collapse; not strong enough. So here's what I come up with...

Foam Spray

It's lightweight and it's pretty durable. Reason why it's controversial is because it's not eco-friendly. I try my best to reuse items that I have laying around my home. That or I'll buy items that are used or pre-owned (with the exception of supplies). I don't want to seem like I'm an eco-friendly sculptor when I'm using something that could potentially harm the environment. With that being said, I won't call myself an eco-friendly sculptor, but I have good intentions.

The foam spray does foam up rather quickly and regardless on how careful you spray, I find that you will have to cut off an excessive amount

Taking a step back from the platform and onto the character himself. I thought it would be a cool idea for the armor's eyes to glow-so why not play with some LED's?!

I wish I had my diagram sketch on how I made the parallel circuit but it's quite simple. I found an image from Adobe Stock that explains it pretty well. I soddered two red LED's with a built in resistor. I like to make sure that my LED's have a built in resistor to prevent any burnouts.

The head was an interesting process. So I wanted to make the head out of monster clay for a few reasons. 1) I'm making the head from skratch so I needed as much time as I needed. I usually use Apoxy but if you've used it before, after 10 minutes or so, it starts curing, making it tacky and hard to sculpt. 2) I was hoping to cast it and possibly make multiple heads for future sculptures.

I wasn't mad at what I constructed but I've noticed that the head looks so far off from the original concept design. I figured once it's casted, I can sand it down and fix it with apoxy. I used Mold Star 15 Slow for the mold.

Fun fact: I’ve actually had the molding stuff for a while now. I tried to cast my first sculpture but ended up scrapping it since I found myself spending too much on the materials. Since it’s just the head-I had more than enough to cast :)

Overall, this is what I got:

Yea... no. I knew this wouldn't work. Comparing the two, looks like the casting expanded and I needed the head to be quite small inorder to exaggerate Vorag's muscular body. I have no other choice but to scrap it. I removed the monster clay (by applying heat directly to it) from the spiderman head and started over.

I've also sanded down some eye sockets and an indent from nose to mouth. I tried sanding down the entire head for the apoxy to stick onto it better and to remove the pattern. Is it necessary? not really in my opinion.

Either way, I'm really happy with the results. Kinda hard to see the detail but the head's smaller and it looks more like the concept art. I know the horns aren't going the right direction when looking at the concept art, but I wasn't too particular with the horn placement.

Time for the body:

I used Aluminum foil and some scrap paper to create the base of the dragon part. If I did this process again, I would've sculpted the body separately and not make it permanent to the platform so soon. Sculpting and paining under the belly was a nightmare and it shows too.

I've also installed the led's into the chest. I used cheap plastic nails to wall the apoxy and the led's. I wish I had some sort of red clear plastic packaging instead but the curvature of the nail sits nicely. I used red UV resin to paint the eyes. The LED wires are embedded in the body so you won't be able to see it. The eyes look a little "yikes" in this photo but I did end up fixing it multiple times.

Placing the head onto the body:

I've also added on the arms as well. I should mention that the arms and chest was originally a monster high doll (I don't know which character though). As I was putting on the arms, I've also widen the upper chest. Like mentioned previously, I wanted to exaggerate his musculature figure.

Slowly but surely it's starting to come together! I used apoxy sculpt for filling the entire body and air drying clay for the platform.

Adding on some additional details like the spikes and and the upper teeth of the armor.

The spikes on the dragon part has these sewn-in plastic spikes, like what you would use on an outfit, acting as a base for each spike. I figured this would keep the structure of the spike and keep them more uniform than me just making them with clay.

Wings:

This was rather tricky for me. So I didn't use Worbla, but a cheaper alternative. I find this specific brand trickier to use since, when heated, likes to permanently bond onto any surface. With Worbla, I can still remove it when warm, but with this brand, a slight pull will get it to rip like putty. Ultimately, I would've done more with the wings if I didn't struggle so hard with it. You can also see with Vorag's belt.

I sanded the crap out of the wings, heck-the entire sculpture. I made sure to also roughen up the Worbla knock-off so that the Apoxy and it can blend out when painted. I learned that the hard way when I made the K'ril Tsuroth a few years back.

Here's the entire sculpture primed. Well, I didn't really have a primer, so I used a satin white paint. It gives off a pearly white finish which I find to be really pretty and gives a marble statue effect.

Here's when I installed the wings. I used armature wire as a staple and hot glue to keep the wings in place. I think overall, they turned out quite nicely. I had to fix the back with more apoxy which was a bit tricky, but manageable.

For the belt, not gonna lie, not the strongest look of the entire sculpture.I wanted to give Vorag his belt as seen on the concept, but again, the Worbla knock-off was ripping apart. It was to the point that I had to use apoxy to fix the ripped parts. I could've restarted, but I was so eager to finish this before the end of the month. Also, I'm training myself on not over focusing on specific areas since it would drive me crazy.

Painting time:

Overall, I like the color choices with the exception of the claws and the horns, I wish they weren't as vibrant and more white but I gave it a pass since it makes him a bit more cartoony and I needed a break from seeing earthy/muted tones.

Instead, I bought a used John Cena action figure on eBay and the difference between the two is no comparison on which one's better.

I cut off the back of the head and hot glued it on to a piece of cardboard. From there I just used apoxy to blend it all in.

Vorag's hair was a mess.

I know, I should've used yarn. But I found such a great deal on hair extensions and little did I realize, it was cheap for a reason. The hair is synthetic so I had to be careful on how heat is applied. If you look at the hair, it's frizzy and hard to control. The hair didn't like to separate which made the glue from the wefts exposed. It was really weird and I don't know how else to explain it. When I was about to remove the hair and give into using yarn, I just said "screw it" and teased the hair. I figured, I'm already going to throw away the hair, what do I got to loose?

Actually, it fixed the problem. Yea the hair is extremely frizzy and I'm not a fan of it still, but it took care of the awkward, open gaps. We was suppose to have an undercut hairstyle, but the top hair was so unmanageable, that I had to anchor down the ponytail part to his back neck with hot glue.

Face up and overall review:

I've exceeded the amount of images used in a post but if you'd like to see more photos, check out my twitter thread here. I think the faceup turned out to be alright, not the best-but alright. The face looks a bit derpy but I think that's because of the way the eyes were sculpted; something I should work on for future projects-symmetry.

I did use the soft pastels and watercolor pencils for the detailing and acrylic paint for the overall base colors. I've used maybe 3 or 4 layers of Mr. Super Clear.

Overall, I'm happy with the outcome. I think for next time I work on something big like this, I should work on it in pieces than work on the entire thing all at once. There are some areas that are just "yuck" (mostly on the belly area). Maybe later on, I'll fix those areas in the future but for now, I'm marking this as complete!

it’s time to talk about Hydaelyn.

i’ve been sat on this theory for a long time - i’m pretty sure i didn’t come up with the original idea myself, but the more i think about it the more it makes sense to me. i’m not sure HOW it’ll come into play in the story, necessarily, but the new year’s eve poem posted last night has me rubbing my chin even more. so:

Hydaelyn exists under Silvertear Lake and i won’t hear no for an answer.

(please note there'll be spoilers for 5.0.)

we have known since 1.0 that there’s Something Under Silvertear. admittedly, in 1.0 it was likely just Midgardsormr, because the times have been a-changing and while the dev team has done a truly admirable job at building on what lore remained from the 1.X days, they couldn’t and didn’t keep everything intact. i do not at any point consider this a downside, just something worth noting!

the Garleans, headed by Gaius van Baelsar (acting under solus-selch’s orders), after the invasion and successful annexing of Ala Mhigo, pushed into Mor Dhona as the next part of their “invade Eorzea” project as a central location that would make continued pushes into the land easy. not only that, but Mor Dhona is noted as being (and has been since 1.X) the center of aetherial connections in Eorzea, if not the whole world, though Eorzea is particularly topped up with aether compared to other landmasses. Cid Garlond in his 1.X iteration suggests that Mor Dhona is where aether returns to rejoin the Lifestream. Quote:

Cid nan Garlond: All aether would - should pass through Silvertear Lake upon returning to the Land, but it now appears that something is bending the energy's course - drawing it away.

in 1.X, Nael van Darnus was originally drawing Dalamud down to fall on this area, where Castrum Novum (now Castrum Centri in ARR and beyond) was built, until adventurers put a stop to that and the transmitter was relocated to Coerthas, where the Rivenroad was ripped from. I’ll accept it as a happy coincidence - the castra was built in this area, it makes sense for plot events to happen there - but it does strike me as interesting, especially where the parallel between the Garlean’s Meteor Project and the original Meteor from FFVII is concerned. Sephiroth wasn’t just calling down a giant slab of asteroid for shiggles; he was doing it specifically to create a wound in the Planet that would require an immense amount of energy to heal that he could siphon off of and become a god. If XIV’s Meteor had hit (and not hatched like an egg), a similar thing might have happened.

And there’s no better place to call a lot of aether to the fore than somewhere entirely rich in it. Almost like there’s a great being in that area dependent on aether that directs the Lifestream through itself to preserve not only itself, but all life on the planet.

The second the Garleans got too close to the lake, Middy burst out with a whole host of Dravanians and the Battle of Silvertear Skies began (and ended with Dravanian victory at great cost). This sequence from 1.X is notable as being one of those things that has to have been changed from ARR onwards considering what we now know about primal summoning (they weren’t just ‘let loose’ into the world, they’ve been actively taught to certain peoples (though why only ‘now’ and not ‘before, too’ is still up in the air)) - not to mention we know that the Echo started manifesting after the battle, too, almost as though something felt like it was in danger and needed thralls (1) to protect itself - but Middy came out to protect something. He’d been known as the great protector of Silvertear Lake for a very long time, since he first appeared to the source. Quote The Rising Chorus, from patch 2.5:

Minfilia: [...] an unlikely ally came to Eorzea's aid that day─Midgardsormr, legendary guardian of Silvertear Falls, burst forth from beneath the waters of the lake and led a host of dragons against the Garlean airships overhead.

Minfilia:  Midgardsormr was once worshipped as the guardian deity of Silvertear Falls [...]

Minfilia: One of the ancient myths regarding Silvertear Falls states that when the waters came into existence, so too did the great wyrm. Althyk and Nymeia, Brother Time and Sister Fate, decreed that Midgardsormr ever watch over the source, from which all water─and magic─was said to flow.   I wonder... What if this was the covenant of which he spoke, and 'twas not the gods with whom he treated, but Hydaelyn Herself? 

minfy and ourselves can only guess as to the nature of the covenant forged between hydaelyn and midgardsormr. Following the Omega questline, we know that Midgardsormr fled the Dragonstar with his seven eggs to get away from Omega, crossing the vast expanse of space at great cost to his own personal strength. We don’t know at what time Midgardsormr appeared to the Source - whether it was before, during, or after the time of the 13th Reflection being turned into the Void as we know it - but it would have been post-Sundering of the Ancient world, considering he was able to make a pact with Hydaelyn at all (2) (not to mention there’s no dragons on the First; if there were dragons everywhere we’d know they were reflections of the First Brood! i’m still angy there’s no Azdaja and Vrtra. fucking PLEASE squenix i’m DYING for info on them).

(1) this is a good a place as any to mention that in 1.X, Minfilia - then known as Ascilia - witnessed the Battle of Silvertear Falls with her father Warburton and her Echo awoke a few years later. interesting to think that the primal that tempered Ascilia in potential desperation would later scour her clean and use her for its own purposes, though i know this wasn’t intentional from the devs at all as a plot-point.

(2) the nature of Hydaelyn and Zodiark’s battle makes me doubt that there was much time between Her summoning and the Sundering of the world

There’s an interview from 2014/15 with Koji Fox where he notes, quote,"There's a presence [at Silvertear]. It wasn't just Midgardsormr there, it was more of a force[...]". There’s definitely something there that isn’t just the dragons. Something big. It’s Hydaelyn!!! It has to be. (highlights in the excerpt mine.)

My interpretation of this event is that Midgardsormr agreed to protect the physical ‘body’ of Hydaelyn in exchange for the safety of his eggs - the First Brood - which is what he’s been doing for potentially upwards of 10,000 years. The battle at Silvertear is pretty explosive otherwise for what’s effectively a non-event. There might not have been dragons in Gyr Abania, or in Ilsabard, or Othard or anywhere else they’ve been pushing into - but there’s never been any indication of the dragons being particularly territorial. The Dravanians shared their space with proto-Ishgardians back in the day, and their issues with the elezen of the Source was due to some choice eye-vorage, not encroaching on lands like the sahagin and kobolds.

As for Hydaelyn’s physical form - well, it’s known that Zodiark has a physical form which was sealed directly into the moon. The true moon, known to us colloquially as Menphina (3) (is there another name for it? i haven’t seen anything). It stands to reason that Hydaelyn has a physical form as well, then, hidden away somewhere safe, because as we known, primals can be defeated and their essences scattered to return back to the Lifesteam.

(3) Hey, it’s worth noting here that Menphina, the Lover (whose divine stone is parked right where Haurchefant’s grave is) is said to be the younger sister of Azeyma, the Warden! and boy, while we’re thinking about the misremembered names of the Convocation coming back as names of gods in modern day, what significance does that have?

The Antitower: In all of creation, what greater mystery could there be than the fate of this very star? To sound the deepest depths, to study the aetherial sea itself─for these purposes and more was the Antitower built. Abandoned by her Sharlayan caretakers following the exodus, it has since been overrun by the magical guardians they left behind. Yet were one blessed with Her gift to brave these dangers and descend to the furthest reaches─to hear, feel, and think at the heart of this world─what would they find?

in the cutscenes following the Antitower, we meet Hydaelyn in the aetherial sea, and Her mouthpiece, the Word of the Mother. and by using the Antitower, something specifically Sharlayan-built, no less. I’d be very interested to know if you can reach the aetherial sea from only the Forelands, where that dungeon is, or from anywhere. I’m gonna make a stab at anywhere.

It’s been brought to my attention that in the cutscenes post-Antitower, Hydaelyn mentions in the quest The Word of the Mother (patch 3.2), and Ardbert echoes later in Shadows of the First (patch 3.4) that “across ten and three were [we] then divided, reflections of the source, each possessed of a shard”, which seems to imply that not only the people of the world and Zodiark, but also Hydaelyn Herself was sundered and became weaker in so doing. which is FANTASTICALLY interesting, all things considered! maybe She wasn’t just becoming weak (and finding it harder to take mouthpieces and the like) because of the land’s aether being drained by primals (and other sources).

The just-released (as of time of writing) New Year’s Eve poem makes me think that the “last chapter of this story” might relate back to this in some way.

Getting away from the poems again and back to Stuff On The Source, we can take a look at the First, a much more pristine reflection of the Source due to having no Calamities happen to it ever. The Source (not to be confused with the Source), the equivalent of Silvertear, is being presided over by none other than... Bismarck, a member of the fae (and BOY i’d like to know more about whaleboi in this world!!!!), in exactly the same position Midgardsormr is, presumably protecting something of equal importance. Having said that, I don’t know if by splitting the world, Hydaelyn also split Herself.

Having said that, there’s an environmental anomaly in that area. Fly out to Bismarck’s (5) nose, and then dive under the waves. There’s a crystal formation coming out of the ground that can’t be found anywhere else on the First - there is nothing else similar to this formation - that has patches of light emitting from bits of it. A friend of mine noted that the way it seems to be coming through in only this location is almost cancerous in origin - that is to say, uncontained and Wrong in some manner, more complex than we have words or knowledge of. The only way you can interact with these crystals is in the level 78 mining levequest Crystal Meds, which notes that you can yank salt crystals out of that formation... but it seems a little too suspect to leave as ‘just salt’.

(5) Speaking of Bismarck, from that earlier interview with Koji Fox, he also has this to say, which... what else have you been hiding in plain sight... (highlights again mine.)

Or the Crystarium’s just going around seasoning their meals with primal mama, who knows.

Eep, this post got away from me. Anyway, i’m not really sure what to DO with any of this information. as many of my friends know i’ve been harping on about this for years at this point, and i’m not the best at speculation and guessing accurately where stories end up going - but it feels more right than ever to talk about it now after that poem was release.

hells, maybe they’ll give us another tower. say... a tower of bab-il, to take us to the moon? 6.0 FFIV expansion pretty please??

Episode 4: Raiders of the Abyss

Thundarr, Ariel and Ookla are riding through the badlands when they see a squadron of hooded beings carrying glowing staffs and riding on giant bats (freakin awesome). The bat riders are attacking a human stronghold that is a beached luxury cruise ship stuck on the side of a mountain (also awesome), stunning the humans with their staffs and capturing them in nets. The heroes rush to the human’s defense, driving away the bat riders. To thank them the leader of the humans, a sea cap’n, invites the heroes to dinner in his captain’s quarters, pictured. He tells them that they are routinely attacked by the bat riding “Raiders” who capture their numbers and abscond to the local abyss. After Ariel points out that the Raiders’ staffs are powered by sorcery, an angered Thundarr (he really hates wizards) agrees to go to the abyss and attack the Raiders.

This requires the heroes to swim in via a river much to Ookla’s chagrin, and Ariel uses her magic to send a pair of Raiders away in a bubble. We learn that the Raiders are actually shriveled beings who use a magic cauldron of vapor in baffling concert with a jet to syphon the life force from people and restore themselves into non-wrinkled beings who resemble Star Trek Vulcans. The heroes attack the Raiders underground lair but Ariel is captured and her life force drained, turning her to a wrinkled purple horror at the commercial break.

Thundarr cuts Ariel down from the jet and a shrunken down human ushers the heroes to safety in an underground city right next door to the abyss. Ariel restores herself and the humans, victims of the Raiders magic, tell the heroes of a local wizard who has the cure for their shrunken condition. The heroes travel to find the wizard which they do easily, and Ariel convinces Thundarr to allow her to teleport into the wizard’s clearly Satanic lair alone to reason with him. She materializes in the crotchety old wizard’s devil sanctum and convinces him to give her the cure after animating his demonic throne statue against him.

The heroes return with the cure but the Raiders, led by a dude who I think is named Vorag, attack on their bat steeds. The heroes fight the Raiders back and Thundarr squares off with Vorag, resisting the urge to kill the whiny villain and instead leaving him bound and hanging on a rope. Ariel uses the cure to unshrink the humans and they all return home to the cruise ship. The grateful cap’n offers the heroes a tasty flagon of questionable drink and they all toast to freedom.

Another stellar offering, I was sold within 20 seconds when I saw the bat riders. Plus the Satanic wizard side quest was aces and I wish more stories had one. 5 stars.
