Vote homestuck trolls for president 2024 flags (poorly made on purpose)

just got out of the shower thinking about how some of the best written female characters I’ve seen that weren’t from media catering to girls are from Homestuck

Like. Homestuck is a fairly female-led story, like yeah the two leaders for each of the main sessions were TECHNICALLY boys, but Vriska was really the one moving the story along for the trolls and Egbert doesn’t even count that much as a boy anymore (I loev June). Rose and Jade for example are two REALLY WELL WRITTEN characters (and they should have talked more) , and when you read about them, you CARE about them. Pretty much all of the troll girls are great as well, Aradia, Vriska, Kanaya, and Terezi (and if we get into dancestors, Meenah, somewhat Damara, and Aranea) are all HUGE driving forces for the plot and,, for most of the boys- well June herself puts it better than I could have

When we get into the Alpha kids though it gets a little blurred, Jane and Roxy are both amazing characters but Jake and Dirk seemed like way more of the focus characters, probably mostly in the fandom but I think Jane and Roxy’s characters kind of suffer in-canon as well, also since a lot of both of their characters revolve around being boycrazy about their respective crush and it sucks!! ALSO!!! CALLIOPE IS GREAT I LOVE HER BUT I NEED TO THINK OF MORE ISSUES WITH HER

THE FANDOM ALSO SUCKS ON HOW IT TREATS WOMEN CHARACTERS TOO BTW like that’s where the worst of it is really, I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen fanart of just Jane on her own and not in a ship or in a lineup

Honestly, once Vriska vs Marceline starts tomorrow, the Homestucks will have won no matter what. We’ve fought tooth and nail just to get to the top. Coming together as a community to get our girl the win. Losing horribly at the last second would be just as Vriska as getting the gold LMAO

I'm kinda sad how I don't see enough of the Beta trolls as a whole friend group the same way we do with the Beta and Alpha kids..

And like it's obvious it's because of murderstuck, it's kinda hard to see them as a big friend group when one of the most important part of their story is when they fucking murderer eachother like they we're in Lord of the Flies

But like, thats the thing, they still cared for eachother and that makes it so much tragic. Literally everything was against them being a normal fuctional friend group and they still tried and at the end everything just ended awfully

We know about Karkat being genuinly heartbroken about the deaths in the group but I feel like we only think of him caring for all of them in the group because it's one of the few we were able to see the grieving process he was going through and was the one who reacted more like a human when it happened = anxious, scared and heartbroken

While Kanaya was pissed the whole time after she wake up, she was angry and attacked everyone who was a danger to the group and it might be because she had a fucking whole through her stomach and the matriorb but I also feel this was her way to express the pain she was going through the deaths of her friends, like people forget but she was very friendly to Tavros and tried to help him a lot, it's probably she made him the Tinkerbull plushie we see in the videogame. She was also very to Feferi so I doubt she was fucking happy after seeing that she got killed. We don't see her interact much with Nepeta and Equius (i don't think those two even interactúe with Kanaya) but she probably cared at some level for them considering she wanted to hunt down Gamzee.

Terezi is also an interesting case because the way she reacts to Tavros death is...interesting. Tavros was one of her buddies when they played Flarp but after she discovers his body she is barely affected by it? In the text it says because she had just cried out all for the doomed Dave but I think it had something to do with Gamzee

You can barely see the honk but it's there , we know Gamzee was probably messing with Terezi so she suspected Vriska for everyone's murder so he probably started things right away after Terezi found the body and after she did exactly what Gamzee wanted her to do, he probably ley go of the whole deal in her head and we see her react to the death of Vriska (and possibly also Tavros)

We know she was heartbroken after killing Vriska and it's the only character besides Karkat and Vriska that we see grieving by the death of one of the group.

Anyway I ended up rambling and I didnt talk about Vriska's talk with June after she killed Tavros, it's a whole deal and I barely get to make a point.

Basically we barely see them interact as a friend group or even grieve eachothers deaths but I feel that was Hussie's writting more than them not caring for eachother (in their own, sometimes fucked up, ways)

Vrisrezi is butch4butch btw. I don’t know how any of you see vriska as like a stereotypical femme mean girl or like one of those skinny asf scene girls with the form fitting shirts she’s a trans girl that wears a dress once and it’s for the compulsory heterosexuality and gender conformity. She’s not like popular or cool she literally roleplays as a pirate. Vriska is like a feral kitten you found in your garage hiding from the rain. Vriska is not a white blonde chick with blue streaks chewing bubblegum with a slutty tank top on she’s like. An Indian girl with an eyepatch and a flannel. She cuts the left sleeve off of every shirt she owns to show off her prosthetic. She wears pirate cosplay in public.

Something nobody ever talks about is how Homestuck^2, (or rather I suppose HS:BC now,) doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and how recreating what was possibly the most overtly toxic and abusive relationships in the comic with their new shipkids, going as far as to give them the same exact names and clearly inspired personalities, is kinda strange.

Especially when you remember those were the same people who well, I don’t know, went on tirades about how the aggressor did nothing wrong, or how the victim was “in the wrong actually” due to “being an obvious chaser,” and whatnot. It just feels like something that should be talked about more, they have the same exact names for goodness sake! The dynamic is obviously meant to be more sanitized, sure, but the fact that they’re depicted as a healthy blackrom relationship can’t just be coincidental. Like, if we’re being objective here, one could even argue that those who wrote it wanted to recreate that relationship, and from what we’ve been shown it doesn’t seem like it was done for any substantial “meta commentary.”

When the two writers of the media property said this I’m sure it had no effect on how the media property was written. I’m also positive that their opinions had no effect on the attitudes of their team at large. You’ve got my vote of confidence that they were putting such mindsets aside whenever they were preparing to write a story where TavVris^2 happens.

Vriska appearing as a prominently likable character who gets everything done in ways that are only acknowledged as “cool” and/or “badass” was just a completely separate writing decision all together. The original Tavros (now colloquially known as “gcat-Tavros” (sprite affiliation),) being poignantly excluded is also unrelated to everything as well I’m pretty sure. It’s all super cut and dry really, innocent fanfiction fun that looks to do right by everyone, no ulterior motives or underlying bias.

I just think it’s highly suspect, is all. TavVris^2, completely unproblematic and the most normal relationship they both have, done for normal reasons, brought to you by the authors that have always kept self indulgence out of their continuation.

as someone who absolutely LOVES steven universe, discovering the whole vriska universe shit that’s been going down has been HILARIOUS to me. like i have no clue who half these characters are, know some of them from infamous fandom history, and know others from personal experience. is it chaos? yes. do i love it? HELL YEAH! it’s so fucking funny and it’s probably because steven universe was my first fandom and i know all of these characters and scenes that are being redrawn and given different character counterparts so well and it’s exactly my sense of humor. it’s amazing and horrible and chaotic and fun all at the same time and i LOVE IT.
