Het geschiedt alles voor ons bestwil Gods Vaderlijke voorzienigheid is de volkomen betrouwbare hoede voor ons leven en voor onze levensbaak. Nu werd hem spottend gevraagd: ’Is dit nu ook voor uw bestwil?’ Met zachtmoedigheid antwoordde de vrome man, dat het uiteindelijk zo zou blijken te zijn. Deze beenbreuk vertraagde natuurlijk de lange tocht naar de hoofdstad en zie, toen ze in Londen aankwamen, was juist koningin Maria gestorven en verkondigde vrolijke luidende klokken, dat Elizabeth in haar plaats koningin geworden was. Gilpin kwam om verbrand te worden te laat. Hij had zijn been gebroken, maar juist dit deed hem aan de vuurdood ontsnappen. Op deze of op een andere wijze zal de Heere Zijn gunstgenoten beveiligen. Het zwakste is veilig bewaard, wanneer het in Christus geborgen is.
