i’m not good with words but i can write a recipe

my great-grandma taught my grandma taught my mama taught me

in the 13 years i’ve spent at her elbow at christmas, easter, thanksgiving, tuesday evenings that were a little too sad and sunday mornings that begged for pancakes on the table

i learned that you mix the dry ingredients together separate

they are as follows:

- 1 ¾ C. love

(it is the steady foundation, everything else builds into it, a staple in any good kitchen)

- 2 ½ tsp. your laugh at my stupid jokes (and mine at yours)

(it is what makes us rise, draws us towards the heat of each other)

- ⅔ tsp. the interests we do not share

(at the surface it doesn’t seem like it should be there, but it adds flavor, i swear)

i learned that sugar is a wet ingredient with delicate baked goods. you want to wrap up the things that make bonds so strong they are brittle.

you want to be soft

- 1 stick (½ C.) the causes we believe in

(we are bonded in them, they help us rise)

- 1 ⅓ C. the tea we sit over in silence, content to just be

(moments that let us be soft, moments that added color to our lives)

- 1 (¼ C. beaten) of the many years we share

(they are what draw us together, what keep us tight through hard times)

- ¾ C. the gifts we give

(to add sweetness, to add flavor, to add toughness)

- 2 Tbs. the disagreements we’ve had

(dark times that make the now all the sweeter)

combine them slowly, but don’t overmix. you want a dense cake, not a tough one

fold in

- my soul (peeled, pitted, and chopped)

(it is still good)

&

- my heart (peeled and chopped)

(it is still yours)

mixed with

- ¼ tsp. pain

(what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger)

- ½ tsp. of a light at the end of the tunnel

(it is good. it is strength.)

bake at 350°F (or 325 if you’re using a glass pan) (177/163°C) for 45-60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes away clean

let cool

the bee dream

i sort of new i was dreaming. there was a magic little girl and the girl was me and she had an incredible burden. her mother gave her a handful of leaves when she was little and told her to keep them close, and that if ever there was a day on earth when the climate is too polluted or life starts to fade, she would destroy a leaf and it would all be fixed. soon, though, she came to realize the world was being killed so quickly that she had to use a leaf every day. until she met the bee boy. 

the boy and the rest of the world didn't know about her leaf power, but the boy and many other youth were trying to do their part to save the world. bee boy made little bee hive starter kits in wax ziploc bags (which still needed some work as they easily fell apart) so there was no waste and it helped save the bees. the girl was astonished at the boy, as she didn't previously know that a human had the power to reverse the damage they had done to the earth.

 (up until this point it was in third person perspective, and now it becomes first person)

 a bee (actually a wasp) buzzed out of a break in its bag and kept following me (the little girl) around. the boy thought it was funny how scared i was because the bee just acted like an overly enthusiastic dog but i was still scared due to my fear of bugs. despite that, it never stung me. 

notes on the dream: it was formatted and animated very much like a disney short film. if i were better at digital art, i would love to animate it but unfortunately i’m not. it was also odd because in real life, i’m not comfortable identifying as female but it was perfectly alright in the dream to be a little girl. it was a lovely dream.
