I have a phobia of wasps and I had a weird nightmare the other night about how a guy couldn't walk on his feet without shock absorbent socks or something and he didnt have any so he was falling about carrying a tray of these sweet volcanos and he falls and because its warm they melt and it attracts a bunch of wasps and then the wasps form a nest around the melted sweets and the man and basically eat him alive.

Just wrapped up this seax inspired chefs knife with a honey bee theme. It's hand forged from wootz steel from @peterburtknives and custom handle material from @storm3dknives and hand stamped honey comb texture on bolster. Recently I made a mistake. A boo boo if you will. I didn’t listen to my gut, and here I am now about to confess, feeling a little embarrassed I may add! So recently I released the “tarantula hawk wasp” piece. Now I always do research and look up insects natural environments when making pieces, and I noticed something seemed off, as all the specimens I saw lacked the yellow strip across the thorax, well, it turns out my supplier had sent me Vespa tropica hornets instead, which is actually a predator of other wasps! But I was so flummoxed with getting things done for the update I didn’t persue it at the time. I also thought it was a little funny that the original post got quite a lot of attention but no one noticed or second guessed it either 😅 anyway, So on a better note, I now have preorders of ACTUAL tarantula hawk wasps available on the website, as well as some megascolia velutina ducais giant iridescent black wasps, and some Vespa greater banded hornets! For the time being I only have a set amount of each available. Vespa!

Anyone know about this? So I was reading the book Origin by Dan Brown and I came across a mention of hornets.

I just assumed it was a bird of some sort by because of the context in which the author used it but turns out, it's a wasp! Now I feel painfully dumb but that didn't stop me from researching further.

These hornets are another group of eusocial wasps. (basically bees but with a cooler name. And of course, the colony is reigned by a female super wasp who is very picky about who she has sex with. The lady values her eggs.) These belong to the genera Vespa. Which brings me to the topic of discussion, Vespa!

Yeah, this is what I'm talking about. This scooter is a product of an Italian company called Piaggio and it promises a pleasurable ride. Not that that was what interested me. I'm sure Italy is wonderful in general. With or without the Vespa, if you ask me.

The point which got my attention was the fact that this scooter was named after a wasp! This hornets have yellow, black and red colours on their body and the Vespa happens to come in similar colours, in addition to several other ones I'm sure.

Wow I never thought people would choose wasps to name stuff after. Everyone is always naming things after birds like eagle, raven, phoenix etc etc...or maybe some mammals...now that I think of it, are there any significant arachnids that have been given so much respect?

I can't think of any! Can you?

I'm all for bees, but...

When the wasps or hornets build their nest right by my back door and attack with a vengance... they can kindly go fuck themselves. Cause I'm not dealing with welts from your asses come spring.

Advice for Remy, Day 191. Don’t be suckered in by people who tell you to stay calm when wasps buzz around you. Just run. . I am not a fan of wasps. In fact I bloody hate them. And if there’s one thing I hate more than wasps it’s when people say to you ‘just stay still, they won’t harm you’. Well that’s all well and good, but firstly, no, absolutely not. And secondly, rubbish - they will. And thirdly, do you honestly think, Margaret, that I have any control over my flailing extremities right now? Do you think I’m planning these movements with my limbs? My arms and legs and body and face and internal organs are all terrified of wasps and, when they see them, all try and move in opposite directions of their own free will. I’m not in control at all at this point. Well imagine my delight when we found a suspiciously large amount of wasp activity outside the front door. Further investigation revealed that they were entering and exiting the porch canopy via a large hole left by the removal of an old light last year, which I’d been too lazy to fill in. They were coming and going at a rate of many every second, so this was no passing swarm. Well, tough times called for tough actions. Like the alpha male I am, I emptied a can and a half of wasp killer towards the hole through a crack in the front door, cowering every time one came towards me. Some hours later when all was quiet, we tentatively poked a camera in and found this hideous monstrosity - a beautifully terrifying wasps nest the size of a large football. My toes are still firmly curled and I’m not entirely sure I’ll be able to sleep tonight. But at least now we know. So tomorrow’s plan is to burn the house down and start again. I’m sure everyone will agree that’s a reasonable and measured course of action.

Lots of nature walks and I have been blessed with a mass amount of wasps nest on my find today too, natures little gift!
