Here Is The Thing About Movies Now Vs. Then
There is a certain darkness to ‘90s movies, which is just not the trend right now and as a child of the ‘90s, I prefer the former.
So, for instance, Hocus Pocus 1993 starts with the witches murdering a child by sucking her life force
Tumblr media
like they dance in front of her corpse because they’re younger
Tumblr media
her older brother failed to save her
Tumblr media
and calls the sisters hags and so his punishment is to live forever as a cat so he can always remember his guilt for not saving his little sister
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and when the mob from the village comes to burn them, they hide the dead child under a blanket while yelling that they aren’t witches
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s HILARIOUS because it’s SO dark but also slapstick just like when they’re about to be hanged, the boy’s parents just want to know what happened to their son
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and she makes a joke
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, if you think about it that’s pretty fucked up.
This Hocus Pocus starts with Winnie not wanting to marry a boy and setting some houses on fire
Tumblr media
In the original movie when it’s current day, Max and Dani are being hassled  and get their candy stolen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Max gets merked
Tumblr media
Thackery is murdered but then comes back to life because he’s an immortal human in a cat’s body
Tumblr media
they kidnap Dani
Tumblr media
like it’s a Halloween movie.
Hocus Pocus 2 is a movie that happens to take place on Halloween. There’s an undercooked storyline about friendship and an obligatory heavy-handed lesson about being sensitive to others’ differences with a dash of the power of sisterhood at the end. There are, like, one or two cool visuals and some atmospheric shots
Tumblr media
but overall it’s very safe and very sanitary. It’s like what they did with Aladdin. From two other posts of mine:
So I watched the “A Whole New World” clip for the Live Action Aladdin
undefined
youtube
and I get that the live action isn’t going to be the exact same as the cartoon but one of the things that I really loved about the original animation is the dark sense of humour. So before Aladdin takes Jasmine on the carpet ride, I kind of love that Jasmine thought Aladdin killed himself because she told him to jump off a balcony
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and the fact that they changed that is unsurprising but still has me like, eh.
[..] and one of my favourite parts of the animated version is that when they’re on top, we see Jafar and Iago humiliate the people, namely Jasmine
Tumblr media
and the sultan, who they thought looked down upon and humiliated them, which included Iago shoving crackers down the sultan’s throat.
Tumblr media
I do understand that the above scene might be considered too dark (it’s probably why I love it so much) but this Iago is just a parrot that literally did not need to be there.
Or it’s like the original Jumanji, I answered an ask about why I considered the original dark and the full post is here but an excerpt:
imagine being a kid who watches her friend being sucked into a game and then is chased out of the house by bats
Tumblr media
And no one believes you when you explain that your friend is gone because he was sucked into a game so then you have to go to therapy to convince yourself that what you saw was impossible because it technically is impossible and you even change your name because you don’t want to be associated with ANYTHING about that night because it was the night you saw your friend get sucked into a GAME but then he comes back twenty years later and asks you to continue playing that game and you legitimately think you’re having a psychotic episode
Tumblr media
and then you have the remake --- and don’t get me wrong I absolutely adored the first instalment of the remake, Jack Black was hilarious --- where, like, yeah you can potentially die in the game if you lose all of your lives but there aren’t really any nuances or implications that make you go, that’s pretty fucked up once you think about them, it’s just a fun movie
Tumblr media Tumblr media
which is, I mean it is what it is but I definitely finished Hocus Pocus 2 thinking it left no impression

All Bets Are Off
@pinkcrocss suggested this and i had to
“I don’t think the two of you could be closer to each other unless you were literally in each other's skin.” Andre teased, watching as Marie and Jordan readjusted their limbs once more.
“We’re not trying to get closer, we’re trying to get comfortable. The human body is a burden.” Jordan complained, shifting Marie’s body slightly to a better position.
“The two of you are essentially attached at the hip, I’m surprised your brains and bodies haven’t merged together.” Emma added. “You’re lucky I like you, Jordan. Considering you basically stole my best friend and roommate.” That got her a stuffed turtle thrown at her head. “Hey!”
“We’re not that clingy.” Marie protested, but it was such a boldfaced lie that the entire room burst into laughter, Marie and Jordan included.
“I don’t think you guys could manage a day without contacting each other.” Cate teased. And Jordan knew a challenge when they heard one, especially from Cate. Marie gave them a slight nod and they grinned despite the racing of their heart.
“Wanna bet?” Jordan asked, a smirk playing on their lips. And so, the bet was on. From midnight tonight to midnight next Monday, Marie and Jordan weren’t allowed to contact each other. Eye contact or brief conversation in public is permitted, but no texting or calls, and absolutely no touching. The winner takes everyone out that weekend.
Marie and Jordan would pretend that it was no big deal, which was how the bet ended up lasting for a full week. The rest of the crew had money on who would cave first.
Place Your Bets Here (Emma, Sam, Cate, Luke, Andre)
jumanji: i dont think jor will make it past day 4
cricket: r u kidding? they wont make it past day 2. trust me, i live with marie. theyre always around
magneto: i think we’re all underestimating jordans stubbornness. i think marie will almost make it, but give in after jor does something reckless and she goes to yell at them
cricket: marie might be willing to die (or kill) for jordan but she’d never willingly lose a bet to them.
fuego: tbh i think they’re both too stubborn to give in but they will make it our problem during this week and after
jumanji: yeah id bet extra money that jor will spend at least one night this week in my dorm
kong: [liked cricket’s message]
kong: [liked cricket’s message]
It would take less than twenty four hours for both Marie and Jordan to begin to feel the struggle. For Jordan, it was like a persistent itch under their skin. They scrolled through her minimal social media constantly, or flipping through their camera roll just to see her perfect, sunshiney smile. It was marginally better when they were in the same room as her, but that tested their discipline in a whole different way. They were acutely aware of her every move. It took everything in them to keep their eyes on the board. Their notes were... non-existent.
Marie had the opposite problem. Life was boring without Jordan, but she knew boring. She could handle boredom. But being in the same room as them and not speaking to them? Not touching them? She could barely look at them. Their eyes were always on her, piercing through her, so obviously wanting her. How was she supposed to stay away from those eyes? She barely looked at Instagram, and came close to changing her lock screen just to avoid the temptation.
This was going to be a long week.
By the third day, Jordan had walked up to Marie’s dorm before walking away three times, and nearly called her countless times. They had also snapped five pens and three pencils while attempting to focus.
Cate opened her door before Jordan even knocked.
“I’m surprised it took you this long. Come in.” She said lightly, a small smile on her lips.
“I’m actually going fucking insane. Like honest-to-god, I swear I hallucinated her voice in the library earlier. What has this girl done to me?” Jordan flopped back on Cate’s bed, ignoring her irritated look.
“You’re just in love.” She said casually, finishing taking off her makeup as Jordan spoke.
“That’s worse, Cate! Don’t you see how that’s worse? I’m not prepared for this.” Their legs shortened suddenly, leaving their feet dangling off the edge of Cate’s bed as they shifted.
“Jordan Li. Did you think you could plan falling in love?” Cate admonished, looking directly into the eyes of her anxious friend.
“I thought I could plan it a bit easier than this!” They whined.
“Maybe you are insane. Do you schedule your other feelings?” She teased.
“... Sometimes.” Cate shook her head and chuckled.
“Jor, stop fighting your feelings and feel them.” She said seriously, before deftly changing the subject.
Marie was in even deeper denial than Jordan. She refused to admit to Emma that she was coming close to losing the bet - even when it was painfully obvious.
“Marie. Marie. Maaaaaaaaarie.” Finally, she resorted to throwing a pillow at her head. “Stop daydreaming about Jordan and help me film this video for my class.”
“I don’t daydream. I’m thinking.” She retorted, but she was clearly staring at Jordan’s hoodie, which was draped over a chair.
“Yeah, sure. And I’m a math whiz. Now help me.” Emma teased, grabbing Marie’s arm and dragging her out of the chair. She would have an enjoyable evening helping Emma with her homework, but night came and she dialed Jordan’s number for the millionth time before turning her phone off and trying to sleep.
But as it turned out, no one could have predicted the outcome of this bet - the two lovebirds were so distracted trying not to think about the other that they walked directly into each other outside of Brink’s office. Fumbling over their things, handing books and papers back to each other, their fingers brushed and it was all over.
“Fuck this.” they muttered in unison. Jordan helped Marie up before sliding their hand directly into hers and dragging her back to their dorm.
"I missed you, Moreau." Jordan mumbled against Marie's lips, their hands cupping her face. She hummed contentedly, resting her hand on the nape of their neck and keeping them close to her.
They took their time with each other, relearning every curve and edge of their bodies. Marie's skin was covered in hickies and bite marks, a blossoming masterpiece that Jordan could not get enough of. She was theirs. It was addictive. They just couldn't get enough of each other. And every small gasp or moan Jordan made sent desire coursing through Marie, a reminder of the power she held over them.
But Jordan couldn't be kept from between Marie's legs for much longer. Her body was incredibly responsive, arching into every touch. They needed to taste her again, feel her come entirely undone for them. They let their tongue trace along her inner thighs, feeling their own arousal surge as she moaned softly.
"Jor, please-" She whined as their tongue teased her wet folds. They smirked, sinking their long fingers into the flesh of her ass, pulling her closer.
"Patience, princess." They said huskily, unable to keep from teasing her a little longer. But finally, their tongue brushed against her clit, causing her body to buck into their mouth. A dark, lustful laugh came from Jordan's throat before they dove in, their lips wrapping around her clit.
Jordan could honestly spend their whole life between Marie's legs, making her whimper, moan, and cry just for them, putting their mouth and tongue to work. But when she cums for the third time, that perfect, fucked out look in her eyes, they can't help themselves. They're shifting without thinking, pulling away from her center and pulling out their cock.
"Fuck, Marie, I need to feel that tight cunt wrapped around me, right now." They groaned, pushing her back fully onto the bed before they pushed themself inside of her cunt, still dripping with her most recent orgasm.
They were both screaming each other's names all night long.
They’d both say the other broke the bet first. Their friends were just glad they didn’t have to deal with the couple’s pouting for a full week.

I made my friend @killallyourfrendz watch Samurai Flamenco with me, and here's the highlights reel of their predictions and commentary:
Early Predictions
TV news guy is going to bankroll an evil organization of villains to get more viewers
Masayoshi goes full villain
Masayoshi is in a coma (from episode 7 onward--later changed to "from the end of episode 1 onward")
"Yeah, I'd beat this guy up, too."
Episodes 8-10 (King Torture Arc)
The rest of the show will just be 10 episodes of “horrific clean-up” after the King Torture fight
King Torture will be Red Axe
Episodes 11-14 (Flamengers Arc)
It's a Truman Project situation: "they’re all in on the bit except for Samurai Flamenco and the cop”
"Mari should just become a villain"
"This is all shenanigans."
"We are just speed-running seasons' worth of content right now."
“All of these villains exist BECAUSE of them."
"I hope Mari gets her stride back and kills again. Or becomes a villain."
Masayoshi is in purgatory
Masayoshi has been sucked into a TV
Masayoshi is in a Jumanji situation
"How many decisive battles can there be?"
Masayoshi's grandpa put a curse on him and forced him to live out all the stories he'd ever written
"Is there even a girlfriend at this point? Is the girlfriend dead? Is he talking to himself?"
Red Axe is hiring people to fight SamFlam so that he can keep coming and saving the day
It's the Truman Show (again)
“This is a Pleasantville scenario, but instead of making the world better, they’re making it worse.”
Episodes 15-17 (Prime Minister Arc)
Mister Justice is just Red Axe in a new costume
The other Flamengers don't exist anymore: "They've left the Matrix"
I’d be like, “Isn’t it weird that this all started to happen after Samurai Flamenco showed up?”
They've reached a new circle of Hell
"Maybe… this is the police officer’s hallucination??"
“If you had just stopped being superheroes, we could have gotten out of this, but NO, you had to KEEP wearing the costumes and that’s why we’re IN THIS MESS.”
Episode 18 (Space Arc)
“This isn’t like a Matrix situation, is it?”
“He is in a hospital bed, unconscious.”
"OH OHHHH??? Oh no this is just, like, another fake out"
Episode 19-22 (Final Arc)
“Are we going to find out the girlfriend was King Torture this whole time?”
"This whole time Goto’s been living his own fucked-up Black Mirror horror story.”
"Masayoshi actually blew up his own apartment; he’s having a Goto moment right now."
“I thought we had just one delusional man to deal with, but really we have two.”
"Wanting to be a superhero: the original sin"
Masayoshi is the final villain (held onto this one right until the last episode lol)
“A middle school boy is trying to kill me, and the advice I got is that I need to fall in love.”

You changed me
Pairing: Lita x Fem reader
Description: Lita tells you how much you have changed her for the better since you got together
Tumblr media
You lean your head on Lita's shoulder and hold her waist as the two of you walk inside your house from the long day. You put your titles on the shelf in your shared bedroom, you both slowly do your night routines and lay in bed together watching Shallow Grave together as you hold each other smelling the orange shampoo she used as she smells the lavender body wash you used, you trace her arm tattoo as you slowly doze off "You changed everything" you him as she looks down at you with fond smile "You changed everything about my life you changed a lot of and about me, you changed me in a way I never thought could happen" you feel tears burn as she caresses your face and traces the heart on your collarbone "I love you so much forever and always baby" she smiles as she pulls you to her, molding you together as you share a kiss full of care and love. "I love you my universe" you turn rosy pink as you lay your head on her chest feeling her heartbeat. You started watching A walk in the clouds after the first movie ended, you eventually fall asleep not only to the warmth of the blanket and her body, but also from the soothing motion of her hand rubbing up and down your back as she whispers in your ear until your breathing evens out and you are completely asleep "Goodnight my darling" she watches the rest of the movie and half of Jumanji before falling asleep herself.

Hi, hope I'm not bothering, but I've seen other people coming in and out of your inbox to talk and I just kinda wanted to actually say something to someone directly instead of screaming into the void lmfao. Lmk if you don't really want that ofc.
So, I've only seen the newer Jumanji movies, but when I made the post it was stuck in my head that Radford would surely take on the role of Spencer (the main dude). So, idk if you've seen the newer movies but Spencer is basically this super sorta cowardly guy who's scared of squirrels. But his in-game character is the overpowered guy played by Dwayne the Rock Johnson. Anyways, he'd be sorta like that because I imagine he has no skills whatsoever with wild animals or nature and just. Freaks out every few minutes. But his character has like, super strength or something he would NOT have irl.
He'd probably take a while to get used to his in-game abilities, but honestly you cannot tell me it wouldn't go to his head a bit. I mean, dude can outrun everyone while carrying a full grown adult, actually carry and run with a full grown adult, have these sudden awesome fighting skills he doesn't even know how he learned, and other shit. But he does not know how the fuck to make a campfire outside of watching, like, Castaway of something lmfao.
In my version of the AU there's Kevin and I decided the Hatzgang (since it might've been Streber's group). They'd all take turns trying to light a fire before giving up and just sleeping in a group with someone taking shifts staying awake. It's all very sad and traumatising. But I'll stop so I'm not giving you a full page of random AU lore in your inbox lmao. Idk does it sound interesting ig?
I've never seen the new Jumanji but this? Amazing
Because Radford absolutely would!! It'd get to his head because he gets to be this super cool action hero guy like in the movies, and once he gets the hang of it he loves it
Also I know it's supposed to be sad and show that even with their new skills none of them know basic survival stuff but the idea that AL L of them fail to light a fire is really funny to me sdjkfndj
Anyways! It does sound really interesting, I'd love to hear more if you want :]

Maybe like a writer x reader where you come home from a long day of golf and just have a nice fluffy relaxing evening
5-9 after my 9-5 \\ writer x reader
clients who weren't kids were always the worst kind. they paid well ($180 an hour) so you didn't complain but i was professional for a reason and they came to me for help so you would think they'd listen to my advice. instead they proceed to mansplain to me my job and today was one of those days.
"see you friday, Mr. Johnson. we have a nine-hole game that day so don't be late!"
i head to the workshop and clean my clubs, scrubbing the heads and cleaning all my training equipment. i had one last set to fix for a client before i left my studio, before i could go home to you. you had called, asking what i wanted for dinner. i asked for your spaghetti and meatballs to which you giggled and showed me your shopping basket full of all the necessary ingredients for that exact dish.
smiling to myself at the thought of you, i made sure all my equipment was where it should be before locking up. i grabbed my bag and headed to my car, calling you the moment i was out of the parking lot.
"hey honey," i say when you answer, smiling at the red light when i hear your voice yelling a little over the sound of food cooking.
"hi baby! you on your way home?"
"yes ma'am, 20 minutes out."
"dinner will be ready by then honey, be safe. I love you!"
"love you too, gorgeous."
i hang up and listen to the playlist you've made me recently, singing along to the taylor song that came on that reminded me of you.
Sonic was at the door leaping and bounding up and down the living room when i walked into the house. the smell of meatballs and san marzano tomatoes made my stomach growl when your smiling face came round the corner.
"hi you," you say with a big smile, slightly dirty apron on and your hair in a messy bun. you had never looked more beautiful.
"hi babygirl," i say and hug you, tired body melting into your arms. i inhale your scent and feel my stress dissipate, leaning back to kiss you on your lips.
"long day?"
"so long," i answer, telling you about my day as you take my hand and walk into the kitchen with me. as promised, dinner was ready and the table set, complete with flowers and wine. i was instructed to sit and wait, munching on garlic bread while you brought out the food.
three rounds of meatballs and barely anything left over for tomorrow, i did the dishes while you picked out a movie to watch. i begged for a shower before the movie, making you promise not to start Jumanji without me.
there's salty popcorn and my favorite ice-cream waiting for me when i come back in more comfortable clothes, your fluffiest blanket ready to be thrown over us and Sonic curled up in his corner of the couch. you insist i lay my head in your lap and i do, watching about 20 minutes of the movie before falling asleep to your warmth and your nails raking through my hair.
nothing comes close to being with you after a long day.

The two 90s Sonic the Hedgehog series (like that wouldn’t be confusing)
[All images are owned by Sega and DIC animation. Please don’t sue or Roboticize me]
youtube
(Thanks to TheNawaf258)
One cannot understate the importance of the spiny mammal with the freakish blue spines and even more freakish speed that bust onto the scene when Sega introduced the Genesis in the early 90s. Before Sonic, a certain company whose mascot was a certain plumber ruled the home video game market. Now we had a contest!
In fact, Sonic’s popularity was so huge that in 1993 not one, but two animated series were created by DIC Animation! The first, The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, made the weekday syndicated circuit.
youtube
(Thanks to Choones The Train Driver)
Tumblr media
The series follows Sonic (voiced by Jaleel White, who played Steve Urkel in Family Matters) and his best friend (introduced in the second Sonic game) Miles Prower (a play on “Miles per Hour”) AKA “Tails” (so nicknamed due to the fact that he has 2 tails that he can spin like a propeller, enabling him to fly) as they defend the planet Mobius from...
Tumblr media
Dr. Robotnik and his primary cybernetic cohorts...
Tumblr media
...Grounder (left) and Scratch.
The plots (and gags) are straight out of Looney Toons. The bad guys are complete idiots who are easily thwarted by Sonic and Tails.
Tumblr media
This series was definitely designed with the under-10 crowd in mind. As I was easily double that in ‘93, I wasn’t overly impressed with the series. However, if you would like to watch the series, it’s available on Netflix.
If I was less than thrilled at Sonic’s impression of Bugs Bunny, what DIC produced for the Saturday morning crowd was the exact opposite!
youtube
(Thanks to 90sCartoonIntros)
Sonic the Hedgehog sets a vastly different tone than Adventures does, making it in my opinion vastly superior to its weekday version.
Tumblr media
Jaleel White again voices Sonic (just to add to the confusion), but this time he’s one of the inner circle of a group of freedom fighting animals attempting to free Mobius from...
Tumblr media
...Dr. Ivo Robotnik (voiced by Jim Cummings, whose voice credits are too numerous to list but is the voice of Winnie the Pooh (and Tigger too!) since the late 90s), who has transformed most of the world’s inhabitants into cyborgs enslaved to him. Alongside his robotic army, Robotnik has transformed Mobius into a dystopian hellscape. Unlike the weekday kiddie fare in which Robotnik was trying to take over Mobius, he has actually succeeded and is the evil overlord of the world! Yes, this version of Robotnik is actually menacing, as opposed to a fat, bald Yosemite Sam in the weekday version.
Assisting Sonic in his fight are...
Tumblr media
Princess Sally Acorn (voiced by Kath Soucie, who voiced Phil and Lil in Rugrats), the leader of the Resistance and the closest thing to a love interest Saturday Morning fare could show.
Tumblr media
Antoine Depardieu (voiced by Rob Paulsen, who voiced Yakko Warner in Animaniacs and Raphael in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series), the incompetent comic relief who speaks in a stereotypically bad French accent and more than a little jealous of the attention Sonic gets from Sally.
Tumblr media
Bunnie Rabbot (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh, whose many voice credits include Dexter in Dexter’s Laboratory and Chuckie in Rugrats), who is full of Southern charm and sass. She also had a run-in with Robotnik somewhere in her past, which resulted in her getting bionic legs and a bionic arm.
Tumblr media
And of course you can’t have Sonic without Tails (voiced by Bradley Pierce, who voiced Chip in the animated Beauty and the Beast and played Peter in Jumanji) since they shared a video game together.
There is a definite edge, a sense of danger, and a small bit of body horror (when you consider there are living beings trapped within some of those robotic shells) to the series. If it was made with an older audience in mind, things could’ve been taken a bit farther, but it was the early 90s and Gargoyles and X-Men were still a few years away (and Batman: the Animated Series was still a new concept)
If you would like to watch an episode, it’s available on Roku.
As always, if you would like to see a particular episode reviewed, let me know!

I finally got around to unearthing my collection of handmade games from my childhood.
First is undoubtedly my most ambitious project: Castle Quest.
Tumblr media
(Look at that art!)
Here’s the game, all laid out (missing only the player pieces and the dragon!)
Tumblr media
Note that there’s spaces inside the castle! You’re supposed to move around in that edifice! (Which is held together with 15yo masking tape & wishful thinking.)
Tumblr media
I put a lot of thought into this! I even wrote an “Advanced” version of the rules, which used a special deck of cards!
Here’s a game I made almost immediately watching the film Zathura (which was derided as a rip-off of Jumanji, although the book was actually a sequel!).
Tumblr media
The game involves taking on missions, which got more & more complex as I went on. And all of it is roll-and-move, so there’s essentially no skill involved whatsoever.
Tumblr media
All of these games are either roll-and-move, or abstract strategy games: pretty much the only game types I knew of besides Scrabble (and as far as I could tell that niche was full).
My parents & sister would even play some of these with me. Dad tested my game design to the limit with Magic (top left in the above picture). The idea was to fight the other players in magic duels, but Dad avoided that entirely and had the best score out of all of us.
Tumblr media
Another “exciting” roll-and move that I don’t think I ever played.
Tumblr media
Getting more abstract here.
Tumblr media
And here is my take on Fantasy Monopoly: Kingdom 4 Sale. (The title is shamelessly ripped off a Terry Brooks novel I saw in the Encyclopedia of Fantasy, a massive reference work I read dozens of times.)
Tumblr media
I think I was pretty good at game design as a young teenager, given that I had only played games like Monopoly & Chess, and had no feedback besides encouraging-but-inexperienced family members.

Streamman Files: Meet Fang0riously
I recently realized that I've never given a full visual of Fang, Gordon's dependable IRL friend from my HLVRAI stories. On one hand, that puts the reader on even footing with the AI characters, who only know him as a voice. But you're not them, so I'm gonna share this drawing along with a rundown of who he is.
Tumblr media
Among friends, he goes by Fang, from the username he's been using for accounts since middle school. Professionally, he uses his first name, but honestly he doesn't mind either. He and Gordon met in high school, where they were both in the same general friend groups. They got along well, sharing plenty of common interests, but didn't really become close until after graduation, where they went to the same college and didn't want to share a dorm with a total stranger. They've been tight ever since.
Aside from being Gordon's friend, Fang's role in the Streamman saga is centered around his career in video work. While his day job is freelance editing for various companies, he's also employed by Gordon as a producer, managing OBS and keeping things smooth during Gordon's streams. He was a silent observer for the Half Life VR But the AI is Self Aware streams, and was the one to send Gordon the final message that Dr. Coomer had sent once Gordon had left the game.
Here's some more details in no order!
Wearing a beanie and a heavy jacket are his golden zone for sensory goodness. He has a variety of hats, but just the one perfect jacket.
Doesn't have a VR headset. Virtual Reality makes him get dizzy real quick, and it's not fun. As a result, he either interacts with the team as a disembodied voice or with a more standard-controlled avatar.
The Science Team has mixed feelings toward him. In addition to it being kind of creepy that he was watching them through the whole ResCas and didn't do anything, he also once argued against Gordon taking the AIs out of the game. It was a very complicated situation, both parties did things they regret.
He's on fantastic terms with Benrey and Darnold though.
He has a pet bearded dragon named Jumanji
Big fan of psychological horror games! He had a PS4 with PT still on it, and his favorite game is Silent Hill 2. He loves to talk about themes and symbolism in games. It can get insufferable in the right context, but he's no gatekeeper. Just mildly pretentious.
Doesn't think of himself as good with kids-- not because he doesn't like them, but because he will give a child whatever they want to make them stop crying. Easily manipulated by small children.
That being said, you know he gives Joshua excellent presents when Gordon brings him over for a night of Hanukkah.
He likes to affectionately shorten names. Gordon is Gord. Expect a lot of gourd jokes in Autumn.
Not a big soda guy, but he's got this ritual down with this one pizza chain in town. When he eats pizza, he's gotta mix two parts coke, two parts sprite, and one part lemonade. He started doing it as a kid and can't break the habit. Darnold thinks he'd make a fine mixologist.
A firm believer in "You can't give from an empty bowl", he prioritizes taking care of one's self before taking on other peoples' problems. If It Sucks Hit The Bricks.
That being said, if he sees that someone he cares about IS giving from an empty bowl, that's immediately his problem. He will let you know you need a break.

I know everyone cites Home Alone and Home Alone 2 as "holy shit isn't that lethal wouldn't that guy be really fucked up at the least" slapstick, and yes yes it is but also shit what about when the WALL OF PAINT CANS falls on VanPelt in Jumanji? Also it's been over a decade since I watched Mouse Trap but I feel like it applies there too. And Beethoven, when he drags those people in the chairs and when the bad guy GETS STUCK FULL OF SYRINGES AT THE END WITH GOD KNOWS WHAT the 90s was just kinda Like That with kids films I think.

Jumanji: The Next Level
You guys know the drill, New week New movie. And today I've got a good one. Today I will be giving my opinion on one of my favorite collabs between Dwayne the Rock Johnson and itty bitty Kevin hart. My favorite Big and Little duo. Jumanji : the next level.
Tumblr media
I’ve always been super iffy when it comes to rebooting films and Tv shows especially if they’re classics. However the movie that i'm reviewing is a sequel to the reboot. That's how well they filmed the reboot. I could've done this review on either one of the two new jumanji but the second one meets my level of comedy. Now I know this movie isn’t all about Dwayne and Kevin but it was a beautiful friendship created from this movie and I preach that every chance I get. This movie reunites our main characters after they graduated from highschool by restarting the never ending game. However when getting into this game they realized it would be way more difficult than last time around because it was a whole new level (hence the name of the movie) This time around the movie offers new challenges, new perks, new villains and redemption arcs for all the broken off relationships between the gang. This time around the friend group are not playing as the characters they were last time in fact they have to learn how to be these characters and work with their strengths and weaknesses. This movie was a big hit in my books. Full of jokes and references you would only get by watching the other 2 movies. I give this movie a solid 4.5 stars out of 5. I am a sucker when it comes to comedies and this movie had the best lineup of comedians like Jack Black (who was probably my favorite character), Dwayne, Kevin, Karen Gillian. We were also given pretty cool features like Danny flippin Divito. Anyways, this movie is a great movie to watch when you need a good laugh and a plus is that it is pg-13 so it also fits the category for a family movie night. See y'all next week for a new movie review.

Thanks for the tag @ha-iiro ! :D I’m glad to be thought of <3
My comfort movies:
1. Ratatouille (there was a solid month and a half of college where I could only sleep with Ratatouille playing in the background)
2. Bugsy Malone — an obscure gangster movie musical from the 70’s, starring a full cast of children playing adults (including young Jodie Foster!)
3. The Pirates of the Caribbean movies just get worse and worse but I love them all
4. La La Land (the COLORS)
5. Return to Oz — an absolutely bizarre movie but as a kid I loved it for being so true to the books
6. West Side Story always makes me feel some kind of way
7. Jumanji (Robin Williams!!!)
8. The Lord of the Rings — mostly the Return of the King but I’ll watch any one of them unprovoked
9. The Dark Crystal (another weird 80’s classic)
10. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home — the one with the whales
I’ll tag @2nd-violin @mysticmagdalene @dragonsbloodsnowcone @talesofamarigold and anyone who wants to — but only if you want to! <3 :)

Got tagged by @astriiformes to name my top 4 movies from my birth year! Unlike Nate I don't have the privilege of being born during the year of the Doctor Who TV Movie, but I've got A Goofy Movie in there which I think is a very good consolation prize.
I haven't actually watched all that many movies from 1995, so To Wong Foo is the only one i've watched in recent years (and its just full of heart and good vibes), but like. A Goofy Movie fucking slaps no matter when, and Jumanji and Apollo 13 are good nostalgia tbh. I don't remember either of them suuuper clearly but ya can't go too wrong with Robin Williams, and Apollo 13 is one of the first movie I remember watching that got me really hyped about NASA as a kid.
Gonna tag @im-not-shouting-im-projecting @notcrazyiswear @windypenguin @twisterpants95 @mctreeleth @jewishdragon and if you have cool movies made the year you were born consider yourself tagged! (and also no pressure @ those who i've tagged)

round up // APRIL 24
Tumblr media
Big ensembles, the queens of pop, rocky romances, and love-it-or-hate-it pop culture artifacts—they’re all here.
We're on the eve of summer blockbuster season, but we’ve already seen several strong releases, including one below I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m still thinking about in December. Keep scrolling through this Round Up for the top comedies, classics, and action thrillers I experienced April in the order I experienced them...
April Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media
1. Monkey Man (2024)
Part John Wick, part Rocky, and part something all its own, Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut is a brutal revenge thriller action fans will love. Watch my full review for KMOV.  Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10
youtube
2. SNL Round Up
Just last month I was low-key mourning an underwhelming season of Saturday Night Live, but then Kristen Wiig and Ryan Gosling came to revive my hopes with two of the best episodes in awhile. Start with “Beavis and Butt-Head” or just cue up both episodes and watch start-to-finish.
“Five-Timers Monologue” (4916 with Kristen Wiig)
“Jumanji” (4916)
“Weekend Update: Aunt Linda on the Latest Hit Movies” (4916)
“La Maison Du Bang!” (4916)
“Monologue” (4917 with Ryan Gosling)
“The Engagement” (4917)
“Weekend Update: Resident Boyfriend Michael Longfellow on Weaponized Incompetence” (4917)
“Weekend Update: Caitlin Clark on the WNBA Draft” (4917)
“Beavis and Butt-Head” (4917)
“Erin Brockovich” (4917)
“Doctor” (4917)
“Papyrus 2” (4917)
Tumblr media
3. Upgraded (2024)
This update of Working Girl set in the art world is, to put it bluntly, just super cute. Camila Mendes has the star power to lead movies bigger than Prime originals (including the winning charisma needed for the best rom-coms), and we could use Marisa Tomei in more of everything. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 6.5/10
Tumblr media
4. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)
It’s not every day I get to mention The Guns of Navarone in a review. This movie is selling itself to you (and your dad) as an opportunity to watch Superman and Jack Reacher kill a bunch of Nazis, and with Guy Ritchie directing, this action-adventure is plenty fun. Read my full review at ZekeFilm. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 7.5/10
Tumblr media
5. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-21)
Thanks to Southwest Airlines, I've seen a smattering of the eight seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but with the first four seasons now on Netflix, April became the month to watch it all the way through. Like Mike Schur’s other sitcoms (The Good Place, The Office, Parks and Recreation), the joke rate is exceptionally high and the characters are lovable and idiosyncratic. If a sitcom filled with Halloween heists, umpteen references to Die Hard, and the silliest possible cases for police offers sounds like your jam, you won’t be disappointed, either.
MORE APRIL CROWD-PLEASERS: If you can roll with the half-developed plotting (and a few cruder-than-necessary moments) in the stylish Lisa Frankenstein (2024), this ‘80s-set homage to Heathers is a lot of fun. // When I tried to watch High Fidelity (2000) as a teenager, I quit about 30 minutes in because John Cusack’s man-child protagonist was so unlikeable. I’m glad I gave it another chance as an adult so I could realize that’s the point. // Jake Johnson’s feature directorial debut Self Reliance (2023) is successful as both a comedy and a thriller. // How to Marry Keanu Reeves in 90 Days by K.M. Jackson (2021) is a frothy BFFs-to-true-loves rom-com filled with celebrity cameos. // Smokey and the Bandit (1977) is way more fun than a movie about greedy lawbreakers should be.
April Critic Picks
Tumblr media
1. The Lost Weekend (1945)
The Big Picture Project continues with Billy Wilder’s first bout of Oscar glory. Read my Crowd and Critic reviews (or just keep scrolling to the previous post if you’re on the home page.) Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
2. Cowboy Carter by Beyoncé (2024)
The problem of writing about Beyoncé is it’s boring to just keep finding new ways to say, “She’s really good at this!” I could write about the sincerity the coming-of-age heartbreak in “16 CARRIAGES,” the epic nature of the bookends “AMERICAN REQUIEM” and “AMEN,” the innovation on “JOLENE” and “BLACKBIIRD,” and the absolute banger that is “YA YA.” (The only real surprise is I’ve found a second Post Malone song I like.) Because I’m a film critic and not a music critic (or much of a country fan), I recommend checking out the Los Angeles Times review for more context on how this fits into her canon and the history of country music.
Tumblr media
3. The Heartbreak Kid (1972)
Why is this rom-com from Elaine May so hard to find? Because my local library is awesome, I’ve now finally seen Charles Grodin get married and then think he may have met the real love of his life (Cybill Shepherd) on his honeymoon. More than five decades later, May’s hilarious and cringey film still has plenty of insight into men’s and women’s relationships (and sunburns), and (minor spoiler alert) its ending is a perfect companion to The Graduate. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9.5/10
Tumblr media
4. Civil War (2024)
I saw someone on Letterboxd call this movie a Rorschach test, and boy, oh boy, that’s an undersell. Civil War is brilliant not because of the political statements it’s making if for no other reason than it makes very few of them. This photojournalist road trip is about the impossibility of complete objectivity, but more than that, it’s about the destructive nature of hostile disagreement. An alliance between California and Texas is writer/director Alex Garland deliberately telling us not to get hung up in our moment’s political issues—if we are so convinced of our own self-righteousness, we’ll lose everything we claim to be fighting for. The Jesse Plemons performance is my premature pick for Best Scene of 2024. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 9/10
youtube
5. The Tortured Poets Department by Taylor Swift (2024)
The prophet has come down from the mountain. Somewhere in my third listen, The Tortured Poets Department snuck up on me. I thought this would be another evermore: worthy of mad respect, but too lugubrious to be a frequent relisten outside of “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.” While that tragic bop is the current contender for the top spot in this year's Spotify 100, “The Tortured Poets Department,” “Clara Bow,” “Fortnight” (now only the third Post Malone song I’ve ever liked), and “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys” will also certainly be in my annual playlist—and that’s just Side A! On Side B, the Daedalian lyrics of “The Black Dog,” “imgonnagetyouback,” “So High School,” “I Hate It Here,” and “I Look in People’s Windows” elevate their sad stories into awe-inspiring strings of words. Whom she and her collaborators are writing about is beside the point; even at billionaire status, Swift’s heartbreak, regret, hope, and indignation are as relatable as ever, sp she can write about high school as long as she likes. Because I’m a film critic and not a music critic, I recommend checking out Variety’s review for more thoughtful (and perhaps more objective) prose about this collection of poetry.
MORE APRIL CRITIC PICKS: Unfaithfully Yours (1948) is an early entry in the Symphony Conductors Dealing With Marital Issues Cinematic Universe that paved the way for Tár and Maestro. // Frank Capra’s semi-forgotten early feature Platinum Blonde (1931) fits right in his legacy of class-conscious rom-coms. // The spectacle of Cleopatra (1963) still dazzles even now.
Also in April…
I checked out the new time travel romance on Hulu, The Greatest Hits, which definitely took inspiration from High Fidelity. Read my full review for Zekefilm.
Photo credits: Beyoncé. All others IMDb.com.
