"I'm fine to be wrong, but let's just talk about it. Let's let that be the opening gambit."
Sorry, y'all, but Orym is 100% right here. Like, sure, Orym walked in wielding that blade without consultation, but Laudna fucking attacked and damaged him first. Jesus christ. As soon as someone suggests that the blade might be cursed, Orym puts it onto the table to be identified -- as soon as a challenge comes up, he puts his soul on the table, bared. He puts himself up to be questioned, criticized. In this situation, he was the only one willing to compromise -- if Laudna had approached him for a talk, he would've been open to it. but instead she gave in to Delilah and attacked her party member.

I do age this month and I just keep getting sad because last birthday I held my friends captive and made them all watch star trek with me (themed dress up party + a playlist of episodes I curated and me shouting, "wait watch this, this is iconic" every 2 minutes) and nothing will ever top that.

Namalin
Namari x Falin
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Easy short rarepair spotlight post for prosperity~ This one I didn’t think of on my own for once, I don’t know if it’s just I forgot the decided-on ship name or what but I remember seeing really nice art and a couple posts about it that I can’t find again 💔 Namalin warrior you are out there and not forgotten ty for making me see the light
I like that Namari’s critical of Falin! I have a whole character analysis on Falin if you’re interested, but it’s generally well noticed that people around Falin idealize her a lot. Laios, Marcille and Toshiro all put her on a pedestral of ultimate goodness in the world, a saintess if nothing short of perfection. Sounds like Chilchuck felt sort of creeped out by her vibes, uncomfortable because he couldn’t read her, so unlike Namari it seems he preferred steering clear of her rather than debate opposed ideologies like he usually does. Makes sense if unlike Namari his issue is with her cryptic aura rather than the stances she does show. "… The dungeon is no place for soft hearts" my ultimate namalin scene <333 It’s fun because while this scene is there to show us a lot of things, mostly to establish Falin’s characters better as it’s the first flashback of her we get, the conflict in it is more than anything else Falin vs Namari in how they contrast and clash and approach situations differently. Namari wants security in swift effective violence and thinks Falin too soft for her own good when she prefers a pacifist approach and promotes compassion even for the "undeserving" in Namari’s eyes. Falin steps between the battle ready Namari and the ghost, fearless. Falin effortlessly gently exorcises the ghost without one step back, quickly. Falin proves someone wrong. Falin proves someone wrong.
I love thinking of Namari being surprised when she learns new aspects of Falin. I like Falin having the power to shape people’s views on her. With Falin ships the most fun part for me is usually that point where Falin/the relationship becomes a clean slate: the person realizes they haven’t been seeing all of her, realizes there’s more of her they hadn’t noticed or that she hadn’t shown, that there’s change, a shift in the views on each other and the dynamic a bit.
Namari often feels like an external view looking in to me… I need to make a proper analysis on her but like. I made a lamari post once (analytic more than personally invested rip sorry) and I go with the same Namari take here, I think she’s someone who tends to have an outsider view on people and relationships if that makes sense, she’s a coworker before anything else and she’s content staying at a distance, she’s not objective per se but she tries to keep feelings out of her choices and how she sees people (her lil arc on not staying to save Falin despite the existing camaderie but in the end asking to work for the Flokes more because she wants to stay with them). She’s serious no nonsense on the job but friendly off the job and likes having casual friends, but she’s not… She doesn’t really feel connected to the group. She’s so focused on doing her job, even if she does get impulsive and passionate and too assertive for her bosses’ tastes, so focused on working her reputation and life from the ground up that that professionalism and attitude limits her social life. It doesn’t help that her reputation makes her widely judged, so she probably enters social spaces on the derensive. The closest person she was to pre-canon as far as we knew was Chilchuck and even they have a very "coworker I get along with" dynamic more than friends, with a similar sense of boundaries, humor and world view. Also like canon says a few time, the party didn’t really try to get to know each other well pre-canon, didn’t hang out after work often no one knew where Marcille was from and no one thought that was weird (also how no one had the instinct to ask about Senshi’s past) etc, the notable exception is we’re shown Namari and Chilchuck hitting taverns together and having a grand time. Everyone’s fine with things as they are, they get along decent even if not everyone considers each other friends exactly. Where I’m getting at is that to me, it feels like she tries keeping emotional distance. Emotional distance from people in general being something which in my interpretation of Falin is also present, which would make it a theme and common thread interesting to explore imo. But yes like, Namari looking at Falin, and how everyone treats her, and being more skeptical, seeing her for what she is a little more, maybe even uncharitable. "Why is everyone treating her like she’s all that? She’s gentle sure but seems like a doormat to me" and then one day she comes running up with her mace ready to cave in someone’s face to protect Laios. So yeah… Keeping her distance but one day Falin offering her some gentleness that feels very too personal for someone who’s not used to being genuine and simply showing that they care… Them talking a bit which leaves her stumped and mindblown in a quiet way when Falin defies her expectations. Namari growing on Falin when she stays and decides to open herself up more, or when Falin ends up reading her really well like she’s shown to do with her parents and Marcille’s worries. She’s very attuned to worrying and why and when different people do it especially when it comes to when they worry for others, perhaps because she does a lot of that too, so I think she’d nail down how Namari does care for the rest of the party and it’d make Namari feel seen both in a warm validating way and in a scared naked way.
We see in the tentacles chapter that she’s someone’s who’s very protective and looks out for her peers in a tough love way. She’s overbearing but it’s because she wants everyone to have the best chances. I like that she’s very confrontational and somewhat pushy and rude, but it’s tough love, it’s protective care: asserting herself to better protect and defend. The opposite of Falin’s type of care, quiet and self-sacrificial devotion. They’re barbarian x healer but they’re also bodyguard x bodyguard in their attitude and role. … What I want for them is slow burn slice of life of being coworkers and slowly getting to know each other better, pretty fluffy, but god, put this way they’d have the potential to be such a hot layered mess of insanely mutually devoted codependence… Falin taking a hit for Namari and Namari being scarred by it forever, lots of arguments about it, my god.
I like that she’s the fighter to Falin’s healer. I looove thinking of scenes of Falin healing Namari, necessitating touch and like, a moment of slowing down and sitting together in silence, too intimate, the perfect opportunity to connect that neither truly want to take until one day they do. I love how onesided I imagine the relationship would be at first. Again, as per my interpretation of Falin, I think Namari would have all these little observations and opinions on Falin meanwhile Falin really doesn’t think of Namari much at first. So Namari thinks a lot about Falin and thinks she’s got her pinned down but hasn’t (not that she’s fully wrong, she’d have credit and confront Falin on some of her flaws like the doormat thing), while Falin is very passive about Namari and doesn’t think deeply about her or anything but she read Namari’s insecurities and logic well. Not unlike how Laios was the one who seemed to understand Namari’s way of care the best in the party in the tentacles episode, and how he was very understanding of her choice and reasons. In Falin’s case it’s more like, the objectivity of passivity… She cares about Namari less than Laios who generally seeks to form bonds, so her lack of investment allows her a neutral perspective. In that way another parallel with Namari that I’m drawing, except Namari lets feelings from her opinions seeps in more… Onesided beef my beloved. I’m going insane save me this post was a mistake. I think Falin takes the crumbs of friendship and love where she can without expecting or asking for anything more than what’s offered, and I think her relationship with Namari (or anyone really) would start out the way it did with Marcille: the other takes the initiative and they end up spending time together, Falin is friendly but unattached until the bond gets gradually and wordlessly strenghtened through regularly spending moments together. So! I think Namari would need to take a lot of the first steps, which since again she’s confrontational & argumentative and doesn’t hold herself back on that front that could spark a lot of conversations I think. Ooor since Falin cares about Namari less than Laios and Marcille she allows herself to be bolder herself lol. Or also circumstances force them to spend time together like dungeon party getting separated shenanigans.
I think their personalities match cutely, I think falin would try to protect namari like she does others but also Namari simply doesn’t need protection, just support. And I think they’re complementary in that way that Namari’s friendly but also won’t sugarcoat things, and I think if she takes an interest in Falin it could go from there and she could develop some understanding of her and idk like an intrigued crush….
Namari wants stability & security & to, like, not be judged and rejected and exiled lol, to find her nest her pack the place where she feels good and wanted in. I think having a fitting partner would help in that (similarly to how the found family with the Flokes seemed to. Oh another parallel, Falin’s top priority is protecting Laios her brother and what Namari are a family figure) and I think Falin would fulfill that cozy protection and that warm ‘being seen and not judged’ feeling. But also Namari would run up to her and yell about her trying to sacrifice herself ever.
Another fun thread to explore: post-canon guilt for not having gone to save her. Sure, they weren’t close, but they had some nice memories, didn’t they? Namari cares, and it stings despite herself when it feels like people think she doesn’t. Oh it wasn’t a lost cause after all, oh it’d have worked out, oh I could have stayed loyal and it wouldn’t have compromised myself in the end. Wanting to apologize to Falin, or just ahnging out with her and sharing a moment after she wakes up. And tangent but that’s interesting to think about… Narratively, I think the purpose of Namari and Toshiro in the story, beyond strenghtening the theme of "seek to understand what is different from you and promote unity despite them" and fleshing the cast and worldbuilding, is Toshiro’s purpose was being a foil & tool in Laios’ arc (trouble connecting with people) while Namari’s was being and a foil & tool in Marcille’s arc (standing up for ideals without being out of touch with harsh realities and needs). They are the conflict that push our protagonists to grow— and they explore different ways of dealing with a situation or topic, different ways of growing into themselves on that end: Laios needing to listen to others more and Toshiro needing to focus on voicing himself more to be able to connect, Marcille needing to learn ideals sometimes cost too much and Namari needing to internalize that ideals are sometimes worth risks (not only to be able to find a reasonable but fulfilling life balance, but also to get in touch with their compassion: Namari restricts her own too much and Marcille is too harsh on people she deems to be breaking values, like Namari not risking her life and career for a friend with no promise of success, or even like how Namari is harsh on Falin’s way of doing things : too gentle, too soft, too idealistic) (similarly to Chilchuck’s arc with Marcille too, and he also plays a hand in advancing that arc in the Namari chapters). We are getting far from namalin sorry ummm preview for future analyses like Toshiro’s contrasting approach to grief and accepting loss.
More post-canon namalin! Thinking about a timeline where… Namari is fond of Falin finding herself and going off to do her thing. "Finally!" she thinks. If she’s still for hire, maybe Falin would want her to come along, either as guide or bodyguard <3, she knows Namari has a lot of good avice on a lot of things to give, plus they’ve worked together before. She hires Namari and they travel for a bit. Travel would do Namari good too I think, even if her end goal is to settle and I think Falin’s would be too eventually. Seeing sights that light her wonder for the world and going places where people don’t know her story, don’t recognize her face or her name. Them, feeling free. Finding a companionship that feels uplifting instead of stifling or charged. Namari having been too in her head about reputation and social games and money that they hit the roads and spend time in nature and it’s like, woah. I’ve been living in a small world with made up rules.
Ahh yes romance, Namari and Falin kissing after 3 years of not really knowing each other despite seeing each other every day then 2 months of wanting to spend more and more time together until they’re an inseparable duo! Workwives. I want them to stand next to each other during campire time and Namari cracks little jokes and Namari laughs. I want Namari to gift Falin a bug caught in amber and for it to be their wedding/promised to each other thing.
TLDR
Rowdy but levelheaded barbarian x gentle healer that will also cave your face in with a mace I like it…… They’re an interesting duo of mixed stuff. Protection being your purpose and what you’re worth for, literally being a meat shield (Laios, Tansu), finding your individuality recognized and validated through a growing bond with the other. Sticking around as a love language. Also bug immortalized in amber and it being beautiful.
Nevermind this wasn’t short. Um! Anyways.

Love your reverse entry AU! Also put a silly amount of thought into the idea of Loop doing a vtuber nuzlock thing; namely, the universe hates them.
See, in my headcanon* of your AU not only do they make the mistake of naming their pokemon after the party, (discreetly, I'm guessing?) They also encounter a bug that makes the game reset if any of their pokemon faint. After freezing for a bit. And once they realize what happened, they decide to actually do their job, and make little puppets. They memorized all of their families actors lines after all! So it's easy for them to act out little scenes in between bits, while waiting for things to happen or during interludes.
Also, they look rather real for a vtuber, so they just have a 3d model of themselves mapped over themselves to hide that they are themself. Except the lighting from glowing head makes it glitch for a half second every hear and there so.
Also! Maybe the puppetry thing ends on them giving the story a ridiculously tragic ending? Because they don't feel like they can acknowledge an alternative ending for a play they star in and remain sane.
*was headcanon the right word here? Probably not. More like, 'I think it'd be neat if'
Anyway this was a lot. Feel free to ignore literally all of it! I just think it's a cool and interesting au that's nothing like anyone else is doing so I couldn't help myself.
Wah!! /pos
This is super interesting and fun anon!!! The Universe hates Loop
To expand upon your idea with more ideas (hope this is okay!):
I can only imagine Loop, while waiting for the game to reboot after freezing, just taking out like. Wood carving tools and materials from out of nowhere and just start whittling away to make these puppets of The Party (but as they remember them, not their modern counterparts.) A few extra set pieces here and there, maybe as well. Not the King though.
Maybe it ends up becoming a recurring thing throughout the stream while waiting for things to stop glitching out? And they start giving “made-up” backstories for each of these puppets while they’re being created well in addition to using them properly for acting out bits!
Every once and a while someone points out their model having an “art-style shift” for a few seconds. They ignore them.
Once they’re all completed maybe they end up putting on a whole production out of it completely discarding the nuzlocke (lmao). A completely fictional tale. Not at all based on their own experiences.
When they get closer and closer to the climactic end. When the party is staring face to face against the final boss, the King. They stall. They think. What type of ending will this story have? They were reciting lines from memory while telling it. Going off script is scary.
They want to continue the tale as written. They want to stay true to their memory.
But they also dont want any of their (puppet) Party to suffer either. So, they tweak it, just the tiniest bit.
They continue telling the tale, beat for beat. Up until when the King defeats them. In one fell swoop.
Instead of the Housemaiden being thrown, it’s the Traveler.
Over and over again, Loop acts out the King (metaphorical, there is no puppet) throwing the Traveler puppet onto the table. While narrating the whole ordeal as well.
They get really into it too, smashing the puppet into smithereens on the table after a bit. Whoops!
This causes the vtuber model to completely glitch out, showing themself instead of the model. They abruptly end stream after that.
…Many people will probably speculate that this is somehow an ARG.
All this happened because The Universe was like “you are not allowed to play this Pokemon Game without some form of hiccup.” lmao.
Anon, I will repeat this again. This is a super fun and interesting idea!!! Thank you, for introducing me to a new idea I had not considered and making me think!!!!!
And I am also sorry for using this ask as an opportunity to reveal where this Loop is coming from (sort of kind of) LMAO.
For anyone who read this to the end, thank you!! And also feel free to send any other asks my way since. I like thinking. About things I have not thought before!!!!

Thoughts on Henry Letham as a romantic partner
Tumblr media
A warning for mention(s) of: self harm, suicidal thoughts, and unhealthy relationship dynamics.
He fell in love with you from the moment he laid eyes on you. When you actually said something to him, he wanted to marry you right then and there. He can't stop thinking about being your boyfriend, your fiance… your husband. He started referring to you as being his to the people in his life before you ever went on a date. He proposes to you at the most random times and in unexpected ways. He's popped the question in the grocery store, gently slipping a twist tie onto your ring finger. He's looked at you with those earnest blue eyes and offered you a ring made from blades of grass with a dandelion masquerading as a stone. You keep every makeshift ring he gives you. Henry always has the real ring with him in case you say yes and mean it. He spends every moment he can get with you, and every moment you're not with him, you're swimming around in his thoughts. He's as obsessed with you as he is with art. He often asks you to pose for him while he paints. The two of you go all over the city. You go with him to art galleries, to shows, to the aquarium, to even the most mundane places. He prefers to walk or take public transport. He hates driving. It gives him a sense of impending doom. He doesn't sleep well. Some nights, he stands in front of a canvas for hours on end, smoking cigarette after cigarette. Other nights, he lays next to you in bed, flashes of indecipherable visions running through his mind. Henry struggles with his mental health. He has an ongoing problem with self harm and suicidal idealization. He hates being a burden for you when he has his bad days. Sometimes he fantasizes about ending his life with you as a witness to it, to gift you his final work of art, but he knows he should never ask that of you. He utilizes touch as a way to express his affection. He interacts with the world in a very tactile way. Of course that would extend to you. You have to peel him off of you and dodge his grasping hands. It's like playing keep away. The two of you have made a game out of it that always ends up with you laughing together after he catches you. He has a good relationship with his parents. He takes you with him when he visits them. They love him and they immediately took to you as well. They're so happy that their son has someone. They worry about him. Henry wants to share all of his interests with you. He also wants you to share all of yours with him. The two of you have spent hours on the floor of your crappy apartment debating topics over containers of Chinese takeout. He has a difficult time remembering to care about his own needs and wellbeing. With you around, it becomes a priority. He wants to be the best version of himself that he can for you, even if he doesn't think he will ever be good enough for someone like you. He's big on documenting and recording the existence of the people he loves. There's countless photos and shaky video camera footage of you. That doesn't include the pages of notes and sketches.
18+ thoughts below the cut
Tumblr media
He broke down the first time you got undressed together and touched his bare skin. You didn't treat the scarred areas of his body any differently than the rest of him You weren't disgusted. You just touched him with care and desire he never could have imagined and it left him weeping. He gets so overwhelmed that he will often cry during or after sex, usually thanking you profusely for being allowed to touch you like this. He's needy and whiny at times, pleading for you. It's not unusual for him to bury his face in the crook of your neck or against your chest to let out sobbing breaths while he fucks into you. On some occasions, he asks if you will let him be rough. Even when he has a choking hold on your neck, there's reverence and respect in everything he does. Gentleness. He's in awe that you are flesh and bone just like him. How could someone so good to him be human? There's a part of him that wants to ruin you. He all but worships you. It's his life's work to make you feel as good as you make him feel. If he doesn't have you squirming and teary from overstimulation by the end of things, he hasn't done enough. He wants you to hurt him sometimes. He wants you to bite him, claw at him, bruise him. He wants you to straddle him and put a cigarette out on his pale skin. He wants to be put at the mercy of your grace. Anything to leave a mark and make him feel real.

Scike headcanons (this is so fucking long)
Scott has Antisocial personality disorder
He refuses to see a psychiatrist– No matter how much Mike nags him to just atleast go see what's wrong with him. He's naturally always been good with psychology, he already knows his own faults and even if he doesn't know the actual name for it, he actually would rather keep it unlabeled. Maybe for the sake of his own insecurity or awareness of himself or maybe he's kind of afraid that Mike would finally have something solid to hold over his head. Either way he doesn't care to know the name of his mental problem.
They have actually tried to murder eachother atleast five times. Like, Scott's pointed a gun at Mike and tried to shoot him and Mike's lunged at Scott with a knife in his hand and stabbed him. Mike's had to drag Scott to the ER atleast twice.
Birthday gifts between them are usually just one thing but it's always something that is genuinely thoughtful and the other person ends up really liking. Like Scott bought Mike a DVD collection of some franchise of action movies and Mike's obsessed with them and watches them whenever he's alone and bored– And it always makes him think of Scott.
They actually do really like eachother. Sure they hate eachother but like they are totally disgustingly infatuated with one another like they are obsessed with eachother. Scott would probably kill Mike if he ever really tried to leave him– And if Scott ever left Mike he would probably just kill himself honestly. And yes Mike's the boyfriend that says "I'll hurt myself if you leave me" and even if the threat isn't solid and Scott knows that he still gives in everytime Mike says it because he thinks Mike is kind of legitimately crazy and might actually do it.
Scott likes to sing really loudly and dance around the house whenever he gets drunk. It's totally unlike his usual self– and Mike kind of loves it. But it also kind of freaks him out because it's so unlike him. But it's also so attractive because it's such a dumb thing to see Scott of all people doing. And in the morning Scott never remembers doing it so it's not like Mike can bring it up.
They live together in a one-story house, and whenever they fight the house gets absolutely trashed. Guess who ends up cleaning it every single time.
Scott's only cleaned after a fight twice and it was because Mike just went to sleep after the fights and there was no other choice.
Mike actually knows how to comfort Scott when he's sad. He's sad very rarely– But Mike can always talk him out of it and then force him to take a bath with him and it always helps– No matter how much Scott will say it's absolutely ridiculous and unhelpful he always ends up going back to his usual self afterwards and Mike's just fine with that because he honestly likes Scott's usual self.
Them getting drunk together and slow dancing in the kitchen. Mike's the only one who remembers it in the morning because Scott has like a weird ass short term memory whenever he gets drunk. But Scott would be the one to initiate it and at first Mike is like what the fuck are you doing but eventually he gets into it too and it's honestly one of Mike's favorite memories.
Scott and Mike actually have some extremely interesting conversations. Like they can shoot the shit for hours with eachother and not get bored with eachother. Especially when Mike is drunk and Scott is sober. Mike can fucking talk when he's drunk. Scott gets annoyed by drunk Mike but if Mike doesn't say some genuinely interesting things when he's drunk.
"I fucking hate you." "Love you more."
Or, more commonly, "I hate you." "Yeah well I hate you more."
Scott thinks Mike doing kickboxing is so hot and will absolutely be his sparring partner when he practices– Even if sometimes it goes too far and somehow one of them ends up with a fr black eye.
Scott never gets sick. Ever. He has the greatest immune system of all time. Mike thinks it's so weird. Then Scott finally does get sick and he acts like he's dying of fucking scarlet fever. But Mike takes care of him anyway, because Mike does actually like him. Somewhat.
Scott will call Mike 'his bitch', 'housewife', 'bangmaid' and Mike's personal favorite– 'Beautiful'. He swoons everytime. He also likes when Scott calls him 'Michael' when he's mad. It actually is like an immediate turn-on.
They bite eachother. Scott will bite Mike and Mike will be like 'wtf' but he'll do it back for the sake of 'payback' but it's really just an attempt to get his mouth on Scott's muscles because Jesus Christ does he love Scott's muscles.
Seriously he'll sit there and just squeeze Scott's biceps while he's trying to sleep and Scott'll get annoyed and smack him but soon as he lays back down Mike's just gonna keep doing it.
Don't get them wrong they might have some real semblance of love for eachother but they will fucking try to kill eachother and rip eachothers throats out at any chance they get. Their love language is beating the shit out of eachother. I believe the term is 'domestic enemies'
Mike really likes how he can tell Scott basically anything and Scott won't freak out. Doesn't even phase him. They're way too comfortable with eachother. Like Scott will take a shit while Mike's showering comfortable. (Mike hates when Scott does shit like that like dude don't do that.)
They'll start aggressively making out while fighting and it's so not normal at all.

On the one hand, learning about behavior can make such a difference in how you view the world. To see an action - especially an action you do not enjoy - and to be able to sit and think about how it could have gotten to that point can bring a new level of understanding and compassion in your approaches.
On the other hand, being aware of the principles of behavior does not make you immune to them and you will find yourself mentally shouting "NO! NO WAIT! WRONG LESSON! YOU'RE GETTING THE WRONG LESSON! WHERE ARE THE GODDAMN REINFORCERS?!" as you watch yourself develop behaviors.
Still, it's a net positive, but UGH

I missed the first hour of combat but — C3E62, let's go!
"We built this for you!" oh honey.
Bor'dor has the lucky feat.
"In the aura of this oddly dunamantic energy emanating from Ashton—" Is this the first time Matt has confirmed that Ashton's abilities are dunamantic in nature? I know it's been obvious from our standpoint for a while now, and it was implied to the party by Caleb's mention of dunamis, but is that the first time it's been acknowledged in-game?
As Laudna starts to get flashes of memories eventually leading to Delilah, her ribcage cracks open to release a hound of ill omen modeled after the Briarwoods' undead hounds.
The dome above the temple begins to glow as a voice echoes from above. "Leave or be judged." A winged celestial being — a Dawnborn Angel — descends, with a flaming sword in one hand, to the middle of the chamber.
As far as I can tell, this is a home-brew. The Judicator seems to be modeled on a planetar (same AC and similar abilities, though likely a lower CR), but the "dawnborn angel" resembles nothing I can find.
Prism refers to herself at the Matron of Ravens' daughter. Now, her calling the Matron "mother" makes sense given the goddess' titles and namelessness; but being a shadar-kai and a wizard who has a "complicated relationship" with the Matron while calling herself the Matron's daughter is definitely cause for concern.
Deni$e has 3-4 rogue levels.
"The Judicator does not back down, it does not feel fear." It's also an "entity trained to hunt those of arcane persuasions." All I can think of are cybermen from Doctor Who.
The summons get the HDYWTDT on the Judicator!
A mid-combat break?? Is this gonna be a C2E86 situation where the entire episode is combat?
An angel, a demon, and an earth elemental walk into a bar...
Orym climbs the demon's back and sits on its shoulders like he's mounting a horse, which it begrudgingly allows.
Ashton speaks to the now-uncontrolled earth elemental in primordial. "We gotta get these people out of your home. Can you get me up there?" With its reaction (read: because Matt is giving the party some leeway here), the elemental grabs Ashton and attempts to huck them up to the angel with a nat20 (what the FUCK is the count on this? this pendulum has got to swing in this half, yeah?), because "the spirits of the forest have taken over where the arcana has failed."
The barlgura grapples the angel and brings it to the ground.
THERE'S the Chop Suey joke, finally. "When angels deserve to dieeee...."
Deni$e has a barbarian rage ability called "spirit of the mountain"? I can't find any barbarian subclass with this ability, and it's not a dwarf thing, so is this a home-brew barbarian subclass?
Bor'dor gets his second HDYWTDT on the angel with a 5th level inflict wounds. He holds its head, kisses its forehead, and says, "enough."
A second Judicator, the one that was patrolling the city, approaches the temple, but turns around and leaves at the sight.
It's so interesting to think about the way this battle would be interpreted in different campaigns. In C1, this would've been a heroic tale of villagers rising up against their oppressors and succeeding; in C2, it would've had underlying tones of national, material, Exandrian politics rather than theological ones, but still would've had that tinge of objective victory; and in C3, it is inundated by theological rhetoric and the politics of the gods, and mired by uncertain, subjective success.
The Judicators' masks are not worn, they are fused to the skull. (Again. Cybermen.)
Eventually, Abadeena's magic, alongside the spirits of the forest and the magic of the villagers, reduces the temple to rubble.
Orym is reconciling, trying to bring together conflicting goals, and Laudna clocks it with a pissed-off expression.
One by one, the remaining "captives" begin to follow the first into the forest, exiting the township and heading to the north, except for a single child. "I'm... I just wanted to feel like I belonged to something, you know, I—" And Abandeena responds, "Do you understand why this was wrong?" With that, they feel the final weight lifted, the hillside and village finally free.
Laudna approaches Abadeena. "Be careful not to become what you despise." She looks back with a genuine honesty. "Sometimes, you must do things you wish weren't yours to do for the betterment of your people. I'm not proud of everything I've done, but don't think your words are lost on me." "There's a thin line between being a savior and an oppressor." "Well. Thank you for being our saviors... we hear, of the Loam and the Leaf, thank you. For your deeds, whatever we can do, you have it." She casts some healing, and allows the Bells Hells to sleep in her house for the night because she can't cast scrying today.
Ashton asks for a private word with themself, Abadeena, and Prism. Nothing comes of it yet, as the village begins to gather toward the city center. They cook, swap stories, and sing.
For the first time in a long time, the village is free to give their thanks to the eidolons and to each other.
Bor'dor can't stop thinking of the face of the angel as they died, and he doesn't know whether he did the right thing. "Something is happening, and faith is shaken."
Prism is trying to view all of this with a skeptical, academic, objective mind, but she can't help but second-guess her subjective experience because everyone's happy and everyone's sad. She feels that this was a net good, but feels that compromises her objectivity.
Ashton believes that, leaving everything out of view out of consideration, this was a net good. They go with Prism and Abadeena behind a tree. ("It's time to get sexy now! It's our turn!" Talisein please)
There were tithes taken from the townsfolk. The temple was wealthy enough; these were not taken by the arbiters of the temple, according to Abadeena. She drags it to the city center, and Prolef begins to redistribute the wealth taken by the temple back to the townspeople.
While that exchange was happening, Orym finds Laudna. She remarks that the townspeople are ignorant of the greater evils in the world. They both agree that this ship is sinking, but this town doesn't know that; they agree that they are frustrated at their ignorance, their bliss, and lament that they have to get back to their people.
Laudna and Orym are so angry, but they can't articulate why — it feels to them like they just put themselves in great danger, when there's so much more at stake than there is in "this piss-ant town dealing with their piss-ant squabbles... I don't know why I'm so angry about it." "You've known more than your fair share of shit... I don't even think... I'm having trouble believing there's anything we can do. I just keep stepping forward because it's what I've always gone, but I don't know if there's anything we can do." "Ashton said something quite profound to me the other night, when were taking out watch around the campfire. Profound especially for them. Right now, if we try to change the world, it's just going to seem like an impossible task, it's just too much. But we can try and change that which we do have control over, our immediate surroundings. Save our friends." "I don't know how much time we have left on this planet — feels like it could all go soon, in a week. But I just wanna make do with the time that I have with the people that I care about, and I want to find them, I want to find them again." "Then let's find them. It's the only directive we have at the moment, the only thing we can control." Orym takes her hand. "I don't understand why you bounced down through history to be here with me right now, but I sure as hells am glad you are here." "I've seen a lot of shit, Orym. That's why we're still here." "And more coming." "We've shown we can take it. Let's just get the fuck out of this town."
Abadeena escorts them back to her cottage. She smiles, and reveals her first name: Joan. Whether the Bells Hells decide to kill her or trust her, she thanks them for trusting the village, agrees to help them on the path toward home, and offers them answers.
If the temple comes back, she does not believe this town is the only one rising up. They have a coalition binding together townships of the Loam and the Leaf, keeping them away from the influence of Vasselheim.
Prism asks if she's ever heard of Predathos or speculated on its nature, asks if Predathos is an elemental weapon against the divine during the Founding. Abadeena knows nothing about Predathos except for Ludinus' speech and the Bells Hells' knowledge, but she does recognize the confidence with which Ludinus spoke and the way his words influenced the people of her town. To them, the eidolons have a symbiotic relationship, as it has been for all those who lived on Exandria before the gods coopted it.
"The lands of Exandria hold to them innumerable eidolons that are tied to the forces of this world, of the titans that first shaped it. With the titans long-gone, they persist however they can, oftentimes among the rules of the gods who now rein. So they are echoes, shades, the remnants and the memory of the titans, of the great elemental queens and kinds of this world, the ones who originally sculpted it." Prism questions whether Predathos is more intelligent, more vengeant, than a simple "black hole."
Orym says to Prism that they don't know anything, and Prism retorts that she's trying to help by way of being really good at learning things. The only thing Orym has to go on is the track record of the people trying to release Predathos, which Prism agrees is "damning."
"Prism... I don't understand the gods, I don't know anything about the titans, I don't know eidolon from eyeliner. I believe that... I'm a widower because of the people who want to bring this about. So it's hard for me to wrangle with the other side." finally
Ah. So this encounter was not designed to pit the Bells Hells against the gods or against the titans, but it was designed to force them to reckon with the fact that they know nothing, nothing about what's happening around them, and further to force them to seek out information about the things they don't know.
AH. Abadeena does not wish to destroy the gods, but to return to a state of Exandria in which the gods and the Primordials lived in balance. Mortal races are an invasive species just as much as the gods are, but there was a point in history where they, the primordials, the eidolons, and the gods existed in conjunction with one another.
She also notes that the primordials, the eidolons, do not feel a threat from Predathos — and that the Matron of Ravens offers no warnings of Predathos, no insight, if she saw it coming at all.
Ashton and Laudna: Ashton doesn't think that the Hishari have anything to do with anything — that is something that they'll be asking of the Bells Hells "once everything quiets down." They are so angry right now, and Laudna notes that she and Orym feel the same. Ashton's worst nightmare was their very first divine intervention. "The gods saw me, a god saw me, I was not invisible. It was not hungry, it wasn't fearful, it wasn't — it was a messenger, it was sent, and it told me what I really didn't want to hear: that it doesn't fucking care, that I might as well be fucking gone, that I was a mistake."
Bor'dor goes out to look for Orym, but rolled a 4, so Orym — from his perch on a high tree — takes pity on him and (after Liam asks whether Bor'dor is a half-elf or not) reveals himself.
With a 19, Bor'dor impressively climbs the tree and joins Orym.
"Do you believe in god?" "I mean, it's beyond question. The gods have shaped the history of this world, they have dropped miracles from their seats on high and caused irreparable damage — and unmistakable good. I don't know that I care — I care about you and me, and I care about my family across the ocean." "My life is vert small. I wake up, I work, I go to sleep. My beliefs have been black and white. These people told just o go into a church and fight something that I can't fathom, and int he moment, where I felt victory, I didn't see a divinity or radiance or whatever the fuck you call it, I just felt sadness and compassion. Did you see the way it looked? There — why did we have to do that? Why is that what happened? And then I wonder, also, why — that woman, Abadeena, has no fucking clue what you people are talking about." [...] "I know, I think, barely more than you do, that people who are so determined to bust something out of our moon that it's worth killing a lot of people to get there. Do I believe in the gods? Yes. Have they had a ton of bearing in my life? No." "So you get to Ludinus, and then what? We just killed an angel, we saved a woman who has no clue about the fight that she's fighting. This village has no clue, they're fucked either way — what are we doing here? My life is very small. What are we doing here?" "I think that, um... Ashton, Laudna and I have friends that we were with, got pulled away from, and I think we've got a one in 2000 chance of stopping more people I care about from getting killed." "Okay. Let's do that, then."
Bonding over shit jokes and laxatives. Ah, the quintessential Critical Role experience.
But still, Bor'dor extends a hand. "I go where you go."
I'm just saying, my "multiple tables running at the same canon time concurrently, exactly like the way Pathfinder Society specials run" theory gains all the more merit.
Laudna stays up with Prism reading through books, and Marisha manifests Beau through Laudna. (Someone write an essay about how each of these players manifests specific aspects of a character throughout each campaign. Tag me when you do, if you do it before me.)
In the books, there are tithing ledgers, as well as deals and plans between the temple and the Silvercall Mill about buying out portions of the neighborhood. These plans were awaiting approval from others in the network — discussions about finding land for temples of the Wildmother and other deities hat wasn't already controlled. It's a lot of discussion about calculated expansion by Vasselheim and Othanzia.
With an arcana check, Prism identifies the runes on the Judicator as having an original draconic base, an arcana script that is divine and protective in nature but in some cases near anti-magic. It didn't present itself in battle, but the Judicator has the ability to dispel existing magic — its old magic, possibly related to the anti-magic cone displayed by the Mage Hunter golems that Ludinus employed.
Also in these papers is a discussion of Vasselheim sending forces to leyline nexuses. Prism notes that the leylines are stationary except for certain celestial events, of which the apogee solstice is the largest — nexuses stay where they are placed until the next apogee solstice moves that nexus, resulting in people gravitating to that area for the time between now and the next apogee solstice. It's about resources.
Prism has been away from her home for a decade. She believes that these past few days are validation for those ten years spent at the Cobalt Soul (or elsewhere), and stifles a personal smile.
In the morning, they are met with the smell of breakfast prepared by Abadeena. She offers to create a scroll for Prism so that she can copy the spell into her spellbook. (Again, because she's an Order of Scribes wizard, Prism can copy spells much more quickly than the average wizard.)
Ashton approaches Abadeena about the magic in their head. "It seems to bend the world... I have dreams, sometimes they're inhuman, sometimes I'm other people but I'm not... you ever seen anything like this?" "Like this? I have not at all... however, if you are to continue to travel, maybe speak with the spirits. Maybe things that are older than all of us combined have better insight than this frail form." ooooooo something something the Luxon is older than the world and so it makes sense that they might be some kind of primordial force. it makes sense that they might be a primordial titan that existed "before the gods" because the primordials also did.
Finishing breakfast, they enter the scrying chamber, and Orym enters unannounced — having taken a point of exhaustion from a sleepless night.
Again, Chetney giving each of the Bells Hells material gifts is a fucking genius move by Travis, because they all have scrying targets now. Whether intentional or not, it's genius, and it really goes reflect the themes of this campaign.
They see snow. Snow, falling, across a mountain range. They see Deanna first, with a prominent symbol of the Dawnfather — then they see FRIDA, a rosegold bipedal robot — then, the familiar image of Chetney, trekking behind with excitement and distance — then Imogen and Fearne, following behind, as FCG wheels up alongside them, all trekking through the snow. Prism and Orym recognize the smoky sight of Kravarad, and recognize that they are not far from Uthodurn. They see Imogen grasp her cloak and look back, as if she's making eye contact with the basin, with the scrying censor — Laudna shouts her name, but the image dissipates.
Regardless, they recognize that the other half of Bells Hells is on another continent, on the other side of the world.
Orym asks if there's anyone nearby who can transport them, and Abadeena notes that "those in Vasselheim could, if you had their favor." Yet she does know someone, about 5 days travel's away from Hearthdale, who could transport them: Hevestro, hierophant of the Emerald Tree, a powerful archdruid whom Abadeena once trained under.
So Team Issylra has two options: go to Vasselheim, a longer journey but with more people who could help, or go to Hevestro and count on the good will of a single archdruid.
Abadeena can scry two more times, and Prism can scry once, making for a total of 3 more scries. (Ahh, now I see why this episode is 5 hours long.)
Scry 1: Dariax. He's chewing on his nails with a dirty, scarred face, with a look of concern, sitting in a dark space they can't quite make out. He plays absentmindedly with the compass around his neck, thinking. A blue hand catches his holder, he gives a nod and stands with his spear — Dorian, also looking a bit worse for wear. "That's the bag of dicks—" "That's our bag of dicks!"
Scry 2: Bor'dor's Home / Brother. "Don't take your clothes off!" (Orym: "C'mon, let it happen.") "There, you see a vision of a homestead, modest but well-furnished, not quite the home of a farmer or a person who keeps cattle or sheep. It's an unfamiliar space to you (Bor'dor). You're uncertain whether this dagger is calling a connection to a place of import or a particular answer to your question, unfortunately."
Abadeena copies the scrying spell onto a scroll, which Prism copies into her spellbook.
Now, the Bells Hells must decide between two things: going to Vasselheim and trying to convince them to help, or taking their chances with the dangerous journey through a canyon to Hevestro's homestead. Orym's gut says the latter.
Matt confirms that no one in the party would know anything about the waters between western Issylra and eastern Wildemount, and that it would take a number of weeks to traverse it by ship. For the record, based on Exandrian timezones, geology, and cosmology, there could be an ocean the size of the Pacific in that space.
They decide to go toward the gorge where Hevestro lives, and Abadeena grants them a wind-based, cougar-shaped eidolon that will escort them. "If you meet others of the Valley Coalition, tell them of what has been done here, and let them know that we are ready to help them as well."
