So stated at the bottom of the Watoo Watoo (Bordeaux, France) release page for Le Tourbillon EP. The other day I received a crowd email from Michaël (Watoo, Mumbly, Feutre) asking us, the emailed, to listen to his new band's music on Spotify. Those bands are the previously mentioned Feutre along with Photon and Vacance. Being a rule follower, I've done as Michaël asked:

The only band to see a previous post was Mumbly (2016). Photon had a song on the excellent Beko Records Olympic CD which I bought.

Panic Attack

Spoiler: This is an excerpt from an unnamed fanfic

There’s a sudden noise somewhere close – it’s the sound of rapidly beating wings, and Anakin flinches purely on instinct, looking around sharply.

Their just birds, flying very loudly in one of the large cages right behind them, but for a moment, all Anakin can remember is Watto hovering over him, wings beating furiously as he... yelled at him for Force knows what this time. Sometimes, it was just for the sake of hovering, ready to hit him for the slightest mistake. All he could ever do was brace himself for it, and –

He draws in a deep breath, as his breathing starts picking up. This is stupid, it’s nothing to panic over, and Watoo is literally not even here, and those are just birds, but he wishes they would stop flying around, because it certainly doesn’t feel or sound like his once master isn’t here.

But all he can feel is the misery around him, and he has no idea why he’s panicking about absolutely nothing, but it feels like he can’t breathe and he’s quite accustomed to that feeling.

Like that time he was running from… someone. He has no idea what they wanted, but they were chasing him, and they wouldn’t stop, and –

Something touches his shoulder, and he jolts back, heart lurching.

“Anakin?” Obi-Wan’s voice filters in through his fear.

Right.

It’s just… He’s here and he needs to breathe. There’s nothing wrong. He doesn’t know what’s wrong with him or why he feels so scared. It’s happened before, but…

Anakin blinks, and Obi-Wan is crouched in front of him now, frowning. “What is it?”

“I – ” He has no idea how to answer that. All he can do is try to even his breathing, the way he does while meditating. It works pretty well, though he still doesn’t know what’s wrong with him. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?” he repeats, dubiously.

It’s a stupid answer, but he shakes his head slightly, trying to focus on breathing. It seems to… be helping somehow. So long as he can try to think about anything other than the wings incessantly beating behind him.

The blue eyes – Anakin notices with a start now that they aren’t yellow nearly as much as he thought they’d be – study him with an unreadable expression for a few long moments, before he stands again. “We should leave,” Obi-Wan advises, “But first, I… have something for you.”

Back when I was younger I had a nice lady who helped me talk. Until I was like six the most I said was “An Watoo” and other baby sounding gabble. If at all. Idk.

After the speech lady was done with me I was going into high school and that was a whole other ballgame but I got by.

That post praising autistic social growth by going to acting classes or taking drama at school I believe is so true it hurts. My speech therapist lady was nice, and the psychologist I saw for a while was also, but they weren’t teaching me how to be myself without being myself.

Drama did that for me.

On top of that it helped me learn how to try to be other people too. You pick up on habits people do and so you can visualise them with a 99/100 accuracy rating in your mind.

That’s why I love dungeons and dragons, it works at the very muscles drama taught me and allows me to visualise them. When done right, I can perfectly imagine the scenes described to me.

There have been times playing dnd that I’ve had to stop the game for a moment and just take in how immersed I get, I live for those moments of clarity.

This sort of thing has been phenomenal for being the Dungeon Master of those games. Currently I’m running a game of Curse of Strahd that I’ve had a BLAST coming up with interesting themed characters, I give them little ticks, vocal and facial characteristics that keep them feeling unique and important and I just love love love that for the most part, people don’t even have to ask who’s talking per voice/character, they just seem to recognise them.

It’s just hard to properly articulate how much acting classes help with this sort of stuff. They’ve helped my confidence more than I ever could have done alone, and I’ve been able to properly pursue my favourite hobby because of it.

Put your autistic children in Drama classes! If you’re autistic and haven’t tried it before please do! Hoooooo it’s fun.
