Black Hole Fantasy Lyric Analysis Thing cause I'm Insane <3

Hello everyone… Sooooo this has been sitting my drafts for like a month and a half </3 I feel like this song perfectly relates to wavewave in so many ways. So I decided to go through ALL the lyrics and explain my thoughts.

First off, my general interpretation of the song has always been that its about struggling with having feelings for another person and deciding to act on it or not. The feeling or thought sitting in the back of the mind slowly taking up more and more space but also being constantly ignored. The singer develops the courage to actually confront their emotions and actually act on them and I just love that so much.

Aren't you tired of going through the motions?

Is the daily grind meant to dull the mind?

I sense a window somewhere closing

To me the window somewhere closing refers to the time/chances for the singer (in this case Shockwave) has to admit their feelings to the object of their affection (Soundwave) for some reason time is running out

The window could be closing for a multitude of reasons but I think it's just a pretty specific line and connects with the overall themes of the song

Somewhere in the world that I just have to find

The days blur together

I watch the ceiling buckle

The walls are closing in

There's a black hole in the living room floor

I keep trying to ignore

But it's growing

Okay so the chorus! The black hole metaphor is sooo effective in this song I really like it in general

Shockwave is refusing to acknowledge his feelings (or maybe even the fact he can feel any emotions at all) and it slowly just keeps growing despite his attempts to ignore it. Actually confronting his feelings isn’t something he wants to do, he sees them as a detriment, a distraction

I feel like the fact the song centers around a space metaphor specifically definitely affected how much it fit with wavewave in my mind

If love is just a chemical reaction

Is there a pill to take?

Something to quell this ache?

This part is SO perfect for Shockwave… he’d definitely have this attitude towards love/emotions in general. He doesn't want to confront his emotions

Like don’t tell me shockwave WOULDN'T want to to scientifically isolate and remove the feelings that are troubling him 

whether you prefer him to have emotions or not I feel like this does fit him as a character in general tho!

Is this the real thing or a distraction?

Is it worth the risk?

Shockwave’s identity is all about being the logical unfeeling scientist, if he admits that he has feelings for Soundwave it sorta shatters that perception of himself. 

If you wanna go more literal it you could also think about it in the context of other Decpticons or even Autobots learning about their connection. Basically Shockwave being worried about having an easily exploitable weakness (his care for another)

Also the distraction thing!! Shockwave is also struggling with these feelings and/or his friendship with Soundwave affecting his work

Like Shockwave definitely has problems with his emotions and him being scared or maybe overwhelmed by what he's started feeling just feels super in character

He can’t bring himself to actually believe things will work out

He wants something that he thinks he shouldn’t or lost his chance to have a looong time ago

Same thing again, he's still running away from his emotions, refusing to acknowledge them

He’s actually acknowledging that his emotions are affecting him, the ceiling isn’t just buckling (like earlier) he knows it is going to cave in

He's not ignoring what he's started to feel yipeeeeee

And on the other side is another life

A version of me with a spark in her eyes that I don't have

Come on!! This is SO GOOD for Shockwave. 

I feel like this line is probably actually referring to later in the song with the “version with a spark in her eyes” BUT what if HEAR ME OUT it's actually about Shockwave reflecting on his past

The version with a spark and that’s laughing is senator shockwave, and now current shockwave is perhaps reflecting on how much easier his past self found expressing his emotions??? DO Y���ALL GET WHAT IM SAYINGGGGGG

Shockwave's relationship with his past self is so interesting to me in general I’ll have to properly read IDW sometime….. (I’ve only read mtmte and lost light)

I feel like this works well referring to Soundwave, he's one of the few Decepticons who I feel like actually has a lot of care for others around him. He's got all his cassettes and that undying loyalty to Megatron cannot just be from Meg’s leadership. There's a respect and level of care there!! (at least in my opinion ofc!) Soundwave actually caresssss AAAAAAAAAA and that extends to shockwave in this context! 

You pull me in your arms and I feel your heart pounding

I take a step back to catch my breath

And we look at each other and double over and laugh

And laugh

And laugh

This is just really cute and it's fun to imagine the waves laughing together lol I can't really fit any analysis here

I just really like this song and this ending is just so wonderful! Despite everything the singer is able to find the happiness, love and acceptance that they were longing for throughout the song.

honestly? i really dont know! i think its just the fact that i have The Character™️ Autism, and currently soundwave is The Character™️. it provides a lot of comfort to write; it feels like going home after a long grueling shift. i love this cryptid and the friends ive made in the tfrpc.

so maybe that's it? having fun with my friends? getting into shenanigans with them, writing silly little love stories, crying over how much trauma i can shove into it. but definitely like. the community.

🟢 Green - How far, if at all, do you think you have deviated from cannon?

ohohoho i know for a FACT that my muse is very canon divergent. i mean, in the first place, there isn't much to go off of in terms of TFP itself. and since i refuse to read the books, i know that there's even more that im missing.

ive said many times that TFP fed us crumbs, and i give us a meal. (im putting this under a cut because its really long and rambly LOL)

i think, overall, TFP gives a foundation for something that Could be a compelling character for Soundwave- they just do absolutely nothing with it. which, in the context of the show and how it was written, that makes sense. the only way to get a truly compelling character arc for ANY decepticon (except starscream) would be to have at least some of the show be a majority decepticon centric. the reason why starscream has such a good arc is because of how many times he flip flops, and how he's written as a major antagonist.

so many times, it feels like soundwave's character is given all the resources to be Really Good, and then just nothing happens. he's used for one liners and as a plot device.

so with that general understanding, ive taken it upon myself to try and expand on the things that he was given and make an actual characterization out of them. the things that we solidly know about soundwave are very present in my muse, and are expanded upon. (though, there are two things that i ignore because i hate them: the vow of silence and the senator soundwave backstory. im sorry, i just cannot imagine high ranking decepticons being senators.)

so what Do we know about soundwave? 1. missing minicons 2. gladiator 3. upmost loyalty to megatron 3. frame reformat 4. its love for laserbeak 5. its general disdain for those around it 6. its loyal to its convictions (i guess you could say this is what i take from the whole "vow of silence" thing) 7. its stupidly smart 8. it has a superiority complex 9. it does not harm humans or those it views as less than cybertronian 10. it avoids combat when possible, but is absolutely not afraid to overpower and defeat those when it needs to 11. it is strategically and logically minded

there is more there, but these are the big ones that i take away from soundwave's depiction in TFP. #9 is especially important to me in general. i feel like ive seen soundwave depicted as needlessly cruel so many times, even when there are so many points in canon where it could've straight up murdered the kids on screen and it just Didn't. It completed its objective, neutralized whatever threat they could've posed, and got the hell out of dodge. Soundwave is unlike other decepticons in this aspect; it isnt a wonton murderer, and thinks about the implications and strategic advantages of its actions.

i also feel like a lot of these known things about soundwave reflect each other. for instance, #7-#11 are all related to each other in one way: strategy. soundwave is a tactician and a strategist. a very good example of this is during the wavewave episode when soundwave saves shockwave's ass on the bridge. it engages optimus enough to provide a distraction, and to allow shockwave to fight for the predacon sample, and just as optimus is about to catch the horn (tooth?) it literally opens a ground bridge into megatron's hand.

that is #7-#11 (barring #9) in full effect. in one scene. soundwave exhibits its stupidly smart self by being able to manage and time a complex groundbridge system, it's able to completely take OP out of the fight, as soon as he's neutralized soundwave is on the sidelines and it's arguably showing off with that whole straight into megatron's hand bit. the whole showing off thing is far more impressive than starscream's (beautiful) transformation sequences because it serves an actual purpose beyond vanity.

switching gears, another way these known factors reflect on each other is the way they showcase that soundwave has capacity for love. #3, #4 and #6 all have to do with the loyalty that soundwave exhibits. loyalty like soundwave's isn't something that's possible without some measure of love.

i want to make it clear that i am not talking (in this instance) about a romantic love. reaching to the greek language, the type of love i mean is Pragma - a long standing, committed and compassionate love. pragma isn't necessarily romantic, but it is deep and firm. its practical, it's logical, its based on the material foundations in which one finds themself, its driven and goal oriented. all of these things are very soundwave-esque.

loyalty, to soundwave, is an unshakable belief in who it is loyal to. loyalty is less about blindly following someone and more about being useful to them so that shared goals may be realized. soundwave isn't blindly loyal to megatron. it didnt join the decepticons because it was enamored with him. soundwave helped start the revolution with megatron while they were in the pits of kaon together. soundwave and megatron were friends before the revolution. they fought each other, killed with each other, lived with each other. their loyalty to each other goes so much deeper than The Cause.

soundwave isn't loyal to megatron for any other reason than they forged a brotherhood with each other, and have fostered this relationship all throughout the war.

if you cant tell, im absolutely INSANE about the implications of their time in the pits together, their time in the war together, and their depicted relationship in the show. literally whenever megatron is venting or giving his thoughts, it is ALWAYS to soundwave when they are alone together. soundwave is the ONLY person who gets to have megatron at his rawest, and [crunches them up into a whiffle ball and hits a fucking grand slam].

i am normal about them, your honor.

i could go on and on and on about this topic but honestly im REALLY tired? but like. these foundational understandings of soundwave's character is what drives my characterization. i take these concepts and run with them, and theyve turned into something that i think is Pretty Compelling. maybe i'll make a longer yapping post about this asp.

im getting REALLY off topic. i love analyzing soundwave's character and i tend to yap about it.

tl;dr my soundwave muse is absolutely canon divergent, but the divergences are based in what little characterization canon gives us and expands upon them.

WaveWave week day 2 - music/cyberverse

@wavewaveweek2-electricbugaloo sorry this is so late 😭. i tried to think of something for day one but i couldn’t 😔 hope its not too much of an issue

*note: they/them soundwave, technically takes place in my continuity but you don’t need context to understand it. All you need to know is that soundwave’s alt mode is a gramophone.

It’s a quiet night aboard the Nemesis. As per usual, Shockwave is working on some contraption in his lab.

This time, though, Soundwave joins him.

Shockwave lets them. They’re just watching, not snooping around or distracting him with meaningless conversation, so what would be the point in kicking them out?

He almost forgets that Soundwave is there.

Until, that is, a soft, almost melodic sound reaches his audial receptors. His antennae twitch distractedly as he attempts to figure out the somewhat unfamiliar sound.

It’s honestly quiet enough that he could have probably just let it fade into the background, but now it’s all he can think about.

Shockwave glances at Soundwave, and realizes that the TIC is, in fact, the source of the sound. They’re humming.

Oh. That… is slightly unexpected from one so quiet, but considering Soundwave’s love for music, it honestly makes sense.

But why? Why is Soundwave humming? What’s the point? It doesn’t make logical sense.

“Soundwave: distracting Shockwave?” they ask, noticing Shockwave’s lingering look.

Deciding that he’s made enough progress for today, Shockwave puts his gizmo down and shakes his head, “No, I was just finishing up.”

Soundwave nods and averts their optics, going back to humming that same tune.

Perhaps they have the answers to Shockwave’s music-related questions. Their knowledge on the subject is extensive, and with both of them having an above average workload, Shockwave doesn’t know if he’ll get another opportunity like this one.

He moves to stand beside Soundwave, the urge for knowledge surmounting his aversion to social interaction, “May I ask you something?”

Another nod, this one immediately followed by a curious tilt of the helm, which is… oddly endearing.

“What exactly is the purpose of music?” Shockwave asks.

Soundwave thinks for a moment, “Answer: …complicated. Opinions: vary.”

“What is your opinion? You are well versed in the subject, correct?”

“Affirmative. Opinion: music is the expression of emotions designed to be understandable and entertaining to others.”

“I see… why not just speak, then?”

Soundwave seems momentarily offended, judging by the quick flash in their visor, “Request: explain implications.”

“What implications?” Shockwave asks, and he means it. He genuinely hadn’t meant to imply anything.

“…Apologies,” Soundwave mumbles, “Soundwave: defensive.”

“It means a lot to you, then?”

“Affirmative.”

Shockwave moves a little closer, and notices the horn-like cannon on Soundwave’s shoulder has stopped playing that tune.

The room almost feels empty without it.

“Do you make music of your own, then?” Shockwave wonders.

“Affirmative…” Soundwave says quietly.

“May I hear it?”

Soundwave’s faceplates flush slightly, “O-of course! Request: unexpected… of course.”

They go quiet, and a different song plays from their shoulder cannon. This one is louder and more aggressive, but not overwhelmingly so.

“Interesting…” Shockwave muses, still not quite understanding the appeal.

He wordlessly slips an arm around Soundwave’s waist and pulls them closer, feeling the urge to recharge make itself more apparent.

Soundwave leans into him, nodding their head to the beat.

“Recharge?” they ask.

“In a moment,” Shockwave replies, “let the song finish first.”

His initial thoughts about music had been that it was nothing more than pointless noise. A distraction.

But looking at Soundwave now… The normally tense, business-like bot is relaxed and peaceful, a sharp contrast from their usual self. All because of a song.

He thinks that, perhaps, he’s starting to get the appeal.
