Why do we do it?
Who is it for?
Creators genuinely come in two types. Those who can’t stop even if they wanted to, firing out work after work, not worrying about whether any of them stick. Then there are those who produce sporadically, agonising over every detail and not showing the world until the final work is just so.
These differing personalities may share very similar motivations for their need to create, but what are they? Why do we do it?
In my post teenage years I was driven by anger, frustration and sadness to produce small works of fancy. I channelled the furious melancholy onto the page with fictional contrivances written solely for my self. These things that ate my inside had be purged from my physical body. Whether any other person saw the result was of no concern. As a young man child I believed in catharsis. hoping to cleanse my soul.
It didn’t work.
Twenty years later I no longer create fiction. It is still creation, still imagination, still story telling. The writer of a text book faces many of the same creative challenges as one who writes an epic poem. Thought has to become form. The motives may differ. With the text aimed at an audience. This is now written to be seen. Twenty years from angry catharsis there has now formed an audience of sorts. While I do not write anything specifically for them, I am now aware that what I am writing is to be read and write accordingly.
Why write these articles? Why do I want people to read them? When creating smouldering fiction I thought “someone out there is also thinking this, feeling this”. I sought to connect, without ever knowing whether that connection had occurred. I had hoped that connection might provide solace, assistance.
This has not changed.
Though I am now telling stories of technique and education rather than broken hearts and blood baths, I am still seeking to connect by offering assistance to people. There will be creators whose aim is purely to leave as big a footprint on the world as possible. To create a legacy. Backwards thinking. If it is glory that is sought it is unlikely to be found. By reaching out glory may well come to you. Sharing thoughts, experiences and ideas is how people learn. The ideas of our predecessors live on in us and our ideas will live on in those who follow.
Provided those ideas are recorded. We may reach out to people one by one, but the great advantage of creating a work is that the work has the potential to reach a multitude. One to one is deep, intimate and lasting, but also exceedingly slow. Each work is the container of thoughts, distilled into succinct form. The more thoughts there are the more containers are required. Thus a mind may generate vast numbers of containers. No single container is large enough to curate these thoughts, except perhaps a gallery. Or a human. Neither are as succinct as a single, deeply crafted, work.

Geometry and the football ecosystem
We must question what we know. Or that which we think we know.
Or better still admit that we really know next to nothing.
Only then can we reconsider what we do and consider why we do it, and whether we can (or should) do it better?
Disciplines often seek to borrow from each other. Sport, business and education cross pollinate with regularity, but sport is as much about structures as it is psychological relationships. What might it learn from physics, engineering, or biology?
Tumblr media
Football creates it’s own geometry. The movement of internal organisms structuring and restricting with fluidity and rapidity. This movement creates an on field ecosystem.
The overall system breaks into subsystems. Dyads and triads. Diamonds facing off against squares in a quest for subsystem dominance.  The squares may face triangles as the numerical superiority ebbs and flows.
The game is so fluid and dynamic that in reality only at restarts can a set shape be definitively demanded and deployed.
Tumblr media
Dense honeycomb shapes begin to form. Nature prefers the hexagon, the strongest structures in nature will feature hexagonal combinations. The formats of football create a geometry based on temporarily fixed points. Nature doesn’t have to worry about whether it is in or out of possession.
When a team has possession is when the gaps are created and the team in possession becomes vulnerable to counter attacks due to the spaces within its own structure. Spaces that the team has created for itself. A shape often not dictated by the game, not self organised and not natural. A shape created by the coach.
By adopting natures hexagon a team may be able to make itself more secure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Using natural geometry may help us to solve the issue of dominating territory and possession, being impactful in attack, while not leaving ourselves open to counter attacks.
Search far and wide, you never know where solutions will appear.

0. Aesthetics, Object-Oriented Ontology and Computation
If the world is always already speaking, even without us trying to express anything even before we make the dance, the song, the painting the program how do we adapt alongside.
What does it mean to live in postmodernity? Or rather perhaps avoiding meaning, what does it feel, what does it do to live in this contemporary world. This planet we are all walking on, doing this and doing that; this huge rock hurling through space and spinning around the sun and around itself… what is it that is: society now?
If we think of the world in Graham Harmen’s terms as the ecological thought, Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) would tell us that everything is interconnected and enmeshed. Modern and pre-modern, artists and scientists, the city and the wilderness, eastern and western. My hand on my phone in my pocket, touching connecting with everyone I know whenever I want. The microbes on the screen of my computer as I type this, their feelings of the electromagnetic radiation rapidly being exchanged from my fingertips through the keys through and through and through. For OOO, the wall between our self and our environment; between culture and nature; between the mind and the body seems to be coming down. Thinking of culture as a microcosm of a larger process, an individual in the contemporary context can understand these divides as existing perhaps only conceptually and not actually.
Technology now surrounds us and in some ways is our culture. We find ourselves here inside of it inside this OOO an ecology of thought. And so what is the appropriate adaptation in this situation?
As a dancer, I’ve spent most of my life using the material information and the physics of the body and the environment that body is inside of as my way of thinking. Using movement and environment as a way of building knowledge. In that way seeing the agency of the environment and of objects seems an organic sort of logic. Dance is a moving of parts in space, a crafting of skill, a physical computing of sorts.
In this way, I find many commonalities between dance performance and computational arts namely in their functionality. Dance different from other art forms as of course, all art forms are different has a tendency towards use value. It can be social and community building, it can be physically healing for injuries, it is used in traditional cultures in a ritualistic manner all for a purpose to achieve a task.  In this way it is a craft rather than let’s say a fine art for which there is not necessarily intentionally and often no function.
In some ways at least then, despite the fact they are very different from one another dance is functional just as computational arts is.
Mass production and commodification of a product is different from personally building an item because I need or want it to use it for myself. And this of course affects the aesthetics of the thing produced. I see both contemporary dance practices broadly and computational arts as attempts at fugitivity (to borrow a term form Fred Moten) within the existing social structure of the times. In addition, both focus on process more often than product and both are in need of the human body to exist yet somehow understand the world without it.
Through the lens of OOO a materialist aesthetics is emergent in both feilds and perhapse is one of the ways in which these two different feilds can be brought under the same roof.

“ Occidentalism is often counterpart to the term orientalism as used by Edward Said in his book of that title, which refers to and identifies Western stereotypes of the Eastern world, the Orient. “
I should have known that while watching ‘Orientalism’ and thought of the term ‘Occidentalism’ that some canny academics would have already covered it. And here it is! :)

Football. The Future.
I have been told so many times that there is “no need to reinvent the wheel” that it has become my life’s ambition to do just that.
Tumblr media
Without change there can be no progress and too often people fight tooth and nail for relatively minor change when what is really needed is sweeping, dramatic change.
Tumblr media
Why fight so hard for something that will make so little difference? If you are going to fight, fight for the new wheel.
Tumblr media
Football is set in it’s ways. The game has changed in a very small way during the last 150 years. Football simulations have changed far more dramatically in a mere 30 years.
Tumblr media
While the classic 11v11 game possibly doesn’t need change for adults, it certainly does for children. New formats to afford greater opportunities are needed and have been suggested.
2v2.
Tumblr media
3v3.
Tumblr media
Even the 11v11 game can be looked into. When young adults play a different version of the game and declare it to be more exciting then the great footballing edifice may not be as stable as imagined.
Tumblr media
Change to progress.
Think. Then think some more.
