Patton doesn’t mind mornings, the light shining through the window, the birds singing, the sound of campus waking up and the occasional bark of a dog.
This morning though, he’d rather just go to sleep.
He was up until one in the morning, just staring at his ceiling, doing nothing. He might’ve gotten up to draw or work on some homework, but he didn’t want to wake up his roommate.
The roommate who apparently doesn’t have the same politeness towards him because he throws a shirt at Patton’s face rather abruptly before either of their alarms even go off.
Patton grabs it and sits up, raising his eyebrows at Dee. “Something wrong?”
Dee looks bored. He generally does, really. Patton has learned to see through it.
“Patton, dear, if you don’t get up and go, you’ll miss your morning rendezvous with specs.”
Patton blinks at him a few times, then flops back down on his bed.
Across the room, Dee sighs. “What is it then?”
“There’s only a week left!” Patton covers his face, sticking his legs in the air and probably looking ridiculous.
“Then tell him.”
Rolling sideways and off the bed, Patton stands, making a pouty face. Dee is staring at him like he looked at the cat Patton brought in from the rain last year. “I can’t just tell him! What if… what if he hates me?”
“Of course, love. After four years of following you around like some love sick cyber puppy, I’m sure he hates you.”
“Really?”
“No!”
Patton loves Dee, he very much does, after bunking with him for four years, how could he not?
That being said, he might be on the brink of shooting Dee one of his famous condescending glares right back.
“Well you could be a little clearer, kiddo.”
Dee sighs for the third time. “Come on, Patton-pouter, I’ll walk you outside.”
Excited, because Patton rarely has time to spend with his friend anymore except at night, Patton pulls on his shirt and shoes in record time. “Are you meeting Maeve?”
“Later,” Dee says, and he goes just a little red at that. “She wants to go over her Welfare project. Again.”
“I’m sure she’s just being thorough!” Patton says brightly, pocketing his phone and throwing open the door.
Dee shuffles through with a grumbled, “Thoroughly obnoxious.”
Patton watches as he flips his hair back from his face, and doesn’t try to hide the proud smile when he doesn’t duck his head to cover the large scar on the left side of his face, even after Dee sticks his tongue out at him.
“Oh, don’t be like that! I’m just glad you’ve decided to stop hiding!”
“It’s been almost a year, Patton. Are you ever going to stop mentioning it every morning?”
“Nope!”
Patton smiles brighter when Dee turns away, barely concealing a small smile.
His smile falters slightly as he looks down at his shoulders. He opens the door again and leans into the room just far enough to pull his cardigan off the coat hook inside. Patton rubs the fabric between his hands and stares at it.
“I am aware of your- er- fascination with cats. So I’ve gotten you a gift… if you’d like it, of course.”
“Lo! This is absolutely purr-fect!”
“Oh god.”
Patton snaps out of the memory when Dee waves a hand in front of his face, and knocks his chin up with a finger. “Come on, you’ll be late.”
Nodding, Patton throws the cat-cardigan over his shoulders and ties it securely.
“Don’t you ever wear it?”
“How would I take it off fast enough to give it to someone who needs comfort?”
Dee goes just a little bit red, and he scoffs and shakes his head. “You’re impossible.”
“You’re pretty!” Patton giggles when that makes Dee turn even redder.
The two walk side by side, and Patton shuffles his feet just a little more than usual. Sure, he’s always happy to see Logan! It’s just…
Just what? Patton bites his lip and shakes his head, taking deep breaths until he can smile without it shaking.
He’s excited to see Logan. That’s it. No deeper meaning, no hidden sadness. He’s happy.
Patton is happy.
Dee opens the door out of their dorm building, leaning against it with one hand in his pocket and looking very much like the lawyer he’s studying to be. “See you this afternoon, darling.”
“Have fun with Maeve!” Patton calls, waving his entire hand so it flaps around on his wrist. Dee snorts and gives him a two finger salute before going back inside.
Looking around, Patton takes a deep breath, letting the smells of campus flow through him.
Leaves and fresh cut grass, coffee and waffles, it smells like fall.
“How can something… smell like a season?”
“You know! How winter smells cold, How summer smells like the beach-“
“We’re nowhere near a beach, Patton.”
“It’s the idea of the thing!”
“I thought it was a smell?”
Patton laughs out loud at the memory, reaching up to pull at a few of his curls, measuring them to his nose absentmindedly as he walks.
He passes a tree, and stops at a chirping sound. He turns and tilts his head at the bird a foot from his face, and he could’ve sworn the bird tilted its head back. “Hi there little guy! I hope I didn’t interrupt your morning song!”
The bird chirps three times, fluttering its wings and hopping to a higher branch.
“You’re beautiful,” Patton tells it with a wave, and continues on his way. He thinks it’s a woodpecker. Logan would know.
It’s about three minutes later when he sees Logan ahead of him, right on time, as usual. Patton waves at him even though his back is turned, “Hey!”
Logan doesn’t stop, but his steps slow down and Patton races to catch up. “Hey Logan!” He says again, maybe a little louder than necessary.
He debates giving Logan a hug, but decides on a light hip tap so as not to invade his space without warning. “How are you?”
Logan nods, and when he adjusts his glasses Patton has the sudden urge to do the same, so he does, and his ears turn pink even when Logan doesn’t notice.
“I am well,” his friend says, and Patton gives him a once over.
His face is slacker than usual, he’s slouching more than usual (though it’s still barely at all) and his tie is crooked. It takes all Patton has to not reach out and adjust it. “You sure? You’re looking a bit tired.”
“That would be because I am,” Logan replies, and his heart sinks. Then Logan smiles at him, and Patton can’t help but smile back. “Not to worry, one bad night of sleep won't stop me from functioning properly.”
Patton guesses it’s been more than one night. He doesn’t comment on it, mostly because that would be a weird follow up to the giggle that escapes him because Logan is so gosh darn cute.
They’re quiet for a few minutes, and Patton focuses on the sidewalk, stepping over cracks and occasionally veering off to look at pretty yellow dandelions. On one of the flowers is a ladybug, and he crouches down next to it to watch it crawl between the itty bitty petals.
“How are you, Patton?”
Patton stands, messing with his cardigan sleeves so Logan can’t tell his hands are shaking. He grins as wide as he can, “I’m awesome! On the way here I saw a woodpecker!”
Patton doesn’t miss the way Logan slows to walk with him, and for some reason it makes his throat hurt.
“Considering where we are,” Logan starts in his teaching voice, and Patton’s throat gets tighter. “It’s more likely you saw a Northern Flicker. They do look quite alike.”
Getting an idea and jumping on it, Patton makes a face at Logan, “Do you want to see my impression of a Northern Flicker?”
Logan looks hesitant, eyeing him warily, and then nods.
Patton grins wider and points his hand north, and starts flicking.
“I don’t see how that resembles a bir- oh.” Logan’s face turns exasperated. “Oh because you’re flicking to the north- that’s- that’s completely awful.”
“You love me,” Patton coos dramatically.
He regrets it the second he says it.
“Do you have lunch plans today?” Logan asks, maybe a little too quickly.
Patton tells himself very sternly in his head not to cry. He reties his cardigan to have something to do and shakes his head, “Nope! None.”
Quiet. Patton blinks rapidly.
Logan clears his throat and for a horrifying second Patton thinks he’s going to ask why in the world would Patton thinks he loves him because they’re only friends and besides they’ll be strangers in a week and-
“Would you like to attend lunch together?”
Patton almost passes out in relief. He clasps his hands behind him, another way to hide the shaking. “Yeah! We’ve been friends long enough that you don’t have to ask anymore, Lo.”
Logan trips a little, but keeps his eyes ahead. Patton wonders just how tired he really is.
The coffee shop door swings open when Logan pushes at it, and Patton bounces through.
Almost everyone in the coffee shop waves at him or says hi, and it makes Patton’s insides warm. He passes Eliot on their way out the door, and the student waves at him, “Hey Patt!”
“Eliot! Hey!” Patton waves back, and his eyes go wide as he remembers the talk they had in Animal Sciences two days ago. “How’d the English final go?”
“Aced it!”
The warm feeling in Patton’s chest gets bigger. “Aw, kiddo! I knew you could!”
Eliot snorts and changes the topic, Patton doesn’t argue. Compliments are hard sometimes. “Getting coffee for Professor Aldridge again?”
“You bet!”
“Man, if I didn’t know you any better, I’d say you’re a suck up!”
Patton laughs as they leave with a friend, turning back to the counter to decide what to get. Logan leans over his shoulder, and goosebumps raise on the back of Patton’s neck. Logan being close to him is.. really nice.
“If they did know you any better, they’d know you are, in fact, a suckup.”
Patton gasps, and his face is red from Logan’s breath on his shoulder but he pretends it’s because of the accusation. He pushes Logan just a little, and almost pouts when he stays far away. “Am not! I just like doing nice things for people… and if it happens to make some professors more inclined to give me extensions more often… that’s pretty neat!”
“I’m fairly certain that’s the definition of a suck up.”
“Coffee, Lo?” Patton asks, smiling despite his red hot ears and cheeks.
Logan chuckles, and Patton wants to kiss him. “Buying me something to get out of a conversation? That’s a bribe. Which is a crime in some states.”
“I guess that makes me a criminal,” Patton starts, raising an eyebrow at Logan who is looking increasingly distressed, “criminally-“
“Black coffee if you don’t mind,” Logan interrupts.
Patton giggles and pulls out his wallet, paying for both their drinks and the Professors.
“I could pay for them this time, Patton.”
“You could!” Patton agrees, but makes no move to let him. “Don’t worry about it. I dragged you here anyway!”
“On the contrary. You didn’t drag me anywhere.”
Smile softening, Patton doesn’t know if he wants to cry because he’s happy, or because he’s lovesick. “No, I guess I didn’t.”
Outside the coffee shop once again, Patton walks slowly with both his cups, not wanting Logan and his morning walk to end. He blows on his hot coco and side eyes Logan. “Are you… nervous about leaving school?”
Are you nervous about leaving me? Is what he wants to ask.
Patton watches as Logan takes a sip of his coffee, wincing at how hot it is. He doesn’t say anything.
“I’m nervous,” Patton blurts, not being able to stand the quiet any longer. “After this it’s just us against the world, you know? The future we’ve been preparing for since preschool is finally here and… I’m not ready at all.”
Logan looks at Patton with wide eyes and a frown, and Patton fidgets where he walks. “You aren’t ready? Are you alright?”
Patton shuffles his feet for a few steps, widening his smile to hide his anxiety, “Of course I’m alright! Just a little apprehensive is all.”
“Patton..” Logan slows and lightly bumps his hip into Patton, “you can talk to me.”
“I know I can!” Patton wiggles his eyebrows, desperately trying to get back the happy mood, “What? Have I been speaking gibberish?”
“Ah. Humor to cope. Why am I not surprised.”
“Well aren’t you feisty today!”
“It must be due to the-“
“Like a cat.”
“-lack of sleep last night.”
“Because cats are feisty.”
Logan adjusts his glasses with a sigh. “Yes. I understood, I merely refrained from commenting on the unnecessary joke.”
“Jokes are never unnecessary!” Patton protests, and he so hopes Logan will launch into a sciencey explanation about jokes that will take up the rest of their time.
No such luck.
“If you don’t wish to tell me what’s troubling you, you don’t have to,” Logan says quietly.
Patton stalls, he doesn’t want Logan to think he doesn’t like him! It’s the opposite of that, that's the problem. “It’s not that! I trust you Lo!” He bites his lip and then shrugs. “I’m just in a funk! I’ll be back to normal me any minute!”
“Patton-“
Turning towards his own class, Patton waves, walking quickly backwards, “I’ll see you at lunch!”
Logan sighs and gives a small wave, “Have a satisfactory day Patton, I’ll see you at lunch.”
“Don’t forget how incredible you are!” Patton calls out the routine end to all their conversations since that night under the tree when Logan cried for the first time.
“I’m nothing incredible, Patton. I’m just broken.”
“Well I think you’re incredible, doesn’t that count for something?”
Patton shakes off the chills he gets and speed walks to his classroom.
He doesn’t look back.
“Mr. Hart!” Professor Aldridge says calmly, watching as Patton walks through the door. She tilts her head, “I didn’t take you for a two cup kinda guy?”
“Oh!” Patton hands her the untouched cup. “That’s for you.”
Professor Aldridge shakes her head fondly. “Thank you, Mr. Hart. That’s very kind.” She stares at him in the way she always does, like her eyes are burning holes in his forehead and reading all his secrets. “Are you alright?”
Patton nods a little insistently, “I’m great! Just tired.”
Aldridge gives him an unimpressed stare and then sighs. “I’m always here if you need it, Patton.”
“I know.” Patton tries for a smile, but it comes out as more of a half shrug and a tight line of a mouth.
Patting his hand, Aldridge nods. “I know the end of school can be hard, and very overwhelming. I’ve been where you are. Hell, I am where you are. Every time a new class graduates I lose just a little bit of me. Especially when one of those students is like you.”
Patton starts to cry.
Aldridge doesn’t stop him, she just sits there with her hand over his and nods. “I met my wife in college, did you know that?”
The shock almost makes Patton stop crying. Professor Aldridge is gay? “You- you did?”
“I did.” Aldridge pulls back to lift a picture frame of her desk and pass it to him. It’s an old picture, Professor Aldridge must have been his age. There’s a girl standing next to her in a leather jacket and a mini skirt, looking like she could kill you in a second and coo over kittens the next.
Patton looks back up at Aldridge, who’s gray hair and crows feet next to her eyes are the only reason she looks her sixty years of age.
“Marrying someone of the same sex was illegal back then, so we didn’t have much hope. We let each other go,” Professor Aldridge looks sad for a few seconds, then she smiles. “We finally found each other again, and both of us cried when our marriage was legalized. We’ve been together since.”
Patton stares at her, and his heart beats in his ears. “Do you.. think it was fate?”
“Oh no,” Aldridge says with a laugh, she takes the picture again, setting it down carefully. “I’m a science professor, I don’t believe in fate… but I do believe that if you really love someone, you’ll always find your way back to them.”
Trying not to cry again, Patton laughs wetly. “You should write a book.”
“There aren’t any books that can tell you what love is,” Aldridge replies, and Patton has the distinct notion that she isn’t talking about him.
“Thank you, Professor.”
“As always, I’m here,” she winks at him, knocking her cup against his before he heads to his seat.
He’s on the front row, like most of his classes, because glasses are great but he’s still blind, and because it’s louder in the front, the chatter of students and laughs and groans drown out whatever Patton doesn’t want to think about.
This time though, it’s not loud enough.
“if you really love someone, you’ll always find your way back to them”
He has time.

Change the Future [Byleth x Claude, pre-relationship]
A/N: This falls half under ‘general Golden Deer fic’ and half under ‘ship’ since there’s no romance yet, idk  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ No romance ‘til time skip.  also I recruited Annette into Golden Deers because I love her
Teachers weren't supposed to have favourites, but then again Byleth had never even planned on being one. She'd been content with cutting down rogues and feral wild animals with her father, living day by day in whatever part of the world they'd settled down in for the time being. She was still adjusting to her new position of authority and truth be told...
She was adjusting to being around one Claude von Riegan.
The majority of men who spent time around her and her father were older, grizzly warriors; the type to give her a friendly roughhousing and an offer of ale when they'd succeeded in pulling off a well-paying job. She was hardly accustomed to charming smiles from someone her age, hand kissing and whispered secrets in her ears. It was all a bit much - Claude was as bright as his house colour in both intellect and charm. She could easily see why so many had gathered to his side - even Lorenz with his snide comments couldn't resist the leader's sway for too long.
Still she tried to maintain a healthy distance as nothing good would come of a mercenary's daughter turned teacher becoming too close with the literal golden boy of the Leicester Alliance. She gave all of her students equal attention, enjoying the vast personalities and heritages of her charges. Some of them were already more skilled then her in certain areas; in particular she feared the strength of Hilda's axe swinging, a happy smile on the twintailed girl's face as she aced her axe exam with a flourish of the massive weapon.
And if her cheeks blushed ever so slightly when a certain lord joined her for tea one sunny weekend, it was her problem alone. One she could lock away and happily ignore, continuing to work at improving her newfound profession. It would cause nothing but trouble; she would be better devoting herself to the path of the sword.
            ----------------------------------------------------------------------
She was glad she had done all of that training.
A fairly routine battle had gone south so far Byleth wasn't even certain how it happened - one minute they were cleaning up the last of a pathetic lot of bandits, the next dealing with some mass abomination of which she'd never seen the likes of. No one in the Golden Deers was sure of its origin, but whatever had brought the creature to them was now their problem. It was a beast of some kind, but far beyond the usual fare of bears or wolves; its silver scales were impossible to penetrate with regular weapons. It was definitely not a simple creature of the woods; Byleth feared something darker at stake when looking at its bizarre anatomy. Lorenz had found out the hard way when he charged forward to strike, only his lance had pathetically bounced off the beast's hide.
He also found out how sharp the beast's claws were when they grazed his chest... not that he remembered presently. Byleth had instantly fired off a Divine Pulse, heart pounding as the familiar sensation of light had wrapped around her body and Lorenz, wiping his bloody gash clean before her eyes. Her reaction had been so fast that he had no idea that anything had even happened - she simply instructed him not to attack and he had complied, obliviously evading a potentially serious injury.
If only it was that simple to snap her fingers and erase her mistakes as easily.
The truth was that every Divine Pulse drained her and she had already used three of them - one to save Lorenz, one to direct Annette away from a falling branch that would land on her (it would break one of her legs and they needed her mobile) and one to direct her students away from an area of the forest that would go up in flames from the breath attacks of the creature. The Deers were used to her powers now and were unfazed by her sudden instructions to avoid seemingly safe parts of the field. Sothis had advised her many times that pushing past three would be unwise and she felt the truth of it in her aching body as she and the others continued to circle and slowly chip away at the beast's scales. Byleth had managed to keep up a steady balance of keeping her distance and striking the beast with the long range of her sword, but she could feel the intensity of her strikes fading with each hit. She was trying her best not to let it show, but she could do little to hide her strained, heavy breathing at this point. It was up to her to keep a calm face, to be the moral center of the group and prevent them from becoming too scared to continue onwards.
Still, she was considering the option of instructing them all to flee; it would be cowardly and if the beast waylaid the nearby town behind them, the blame would fall onto the Golden Deers (onto Claude, her mind unhelpfully supplied). Still, she'd much rather her students face consequences from the Church than be killed in some nameless forest, their bodies staining the grass red.
"Thinking of running?"
Byleth turned, marveling slightly at his reliable ability to read her thoughts all too easily. Claude smiled next to her, tired but still putting on a show of strength despite his singed armor and sweaty face. Even the almost ever-present volley of arrows he had been firing off were weakening as the battle had raged on. He too was faced with the burden of reassuring the others; if the Deers saw Claude still confident, they believed that any fight, no matter how grueling, could be turned into a victory. Still, it was not victory she had in mind currently and Claude's judgement was something she had need of right now.
"Yes. We're outmatched and I'd rather us face whatever consequences befall us than to lose any Deers here. Your thoughts?"
"We're on the same wavelength, as usual" he replied, somehow having the energy to wink at her.
"Truly?"
"We're only delaying this creature momentarily - it may be weakened as of now but we don't have the resources to put it down. And I don't particularly plan on such a pathetic end for the Golden Deers!" he assured her, tone steady and full of conviction.
Though they seemed to have momentarily tired the beast out as it had stopped approaching, it was eyeing them with malice from the spot it was resting. She nodded at his reasoning, relieved. The two of them could face whatever problems that arose with not immediately defeating the beast once they returned to the Monastery. Still, there was one remaining issue; the area they had been currently circling the beast around was far too wide and flat for an easy escape - it was a fair distance to the nearest copse of trees that was too thickly forested for the beast to easily follow.
"It's far too accurate with that breath attack. If our students ran off one-by-one or in a group, they'll be an easy target for its flames before they could escape through the trees. It hardly seems content to just let us leave... how can we get them out safely?" she asked, trying to keep the underlying fear out of her voice.
He hummed in thought, sharp green eyes scanning their position and the bedraggled appearances of their Golden Deers. She followed his gaze, wincing at the exhaustion and anxiety on her student's faces. Annette shot her a pained glance, her expression looking for reassurance from Byleth. She felt slightly hopeless; if only a more seasoned and older professor had been with them! She gripped her sword tighter, resolving to get them out safely no matter the cost to her own being.
"How do you feel about taking a risk with me?"
Byleth blinked, looking at the lord who had seemingly done scanning the field.
"Our current problem is that our big scaly friend here is going to flame whoever flees first if we leave it where it is. This thing's got a clear shot if it stays in that position-"
"So we go closer and distract the creature while the others run away?" she finished, eyes wide with understanding.
"Yep" he replied casually, lip popping the 'p' as if he'd suggested something completely casual.
"But when they do, they'll only be two of us left... and Claude, you shouldn't be putting yourself in danger like that!" she replied, tone beseeching as she kept an eye on the now increasingly restless beast.
"I made the plan, I'll take the risks. You feel the same anyway, right?" he shot back, tone still infuriatingly nonchalant as he readjusted out of his bow stance.
She sighed, knowing she had no better plan and that Claude's schemes usually were more successful than hers.
"Very well, we'll attempt to distract it until the others have left and then escape together. But if things get too dangerous, I want you to run while I hold it back. Promise me."
He paused, emerald eyes staring at her with a thoughtful expression while taking an arrow out of his quiver.
"That's a pretty selfish promise you know. Leave you to handle some crazy beast alone while I run?"
"Precisely, because you are a lord who is heir to an empire and I am in charge of your welfare" she stated, tone unflinching and stance rigid.
They had a brief staredown, eyes locked in a silent argument before Claude relented.
"Fine. But I'm planning on staying as long as possible, so don't expect me to turn tail at the first sight of trouble!"
She nodded, shoulders slumping as she readjusted the grip on her sword. Her arm was aching, but she still had some strength left in her for the last part of their plan.
"Golden Deers, to me!" Claude commanded, voice cutting loud and clear through the wide space.
The students ran over, relieved; they were counting on the two to deliver them out of the predicament safely. They'd managed to wound the beast at best and quickly realized they didn't have a chance of soundly defeating the creature. Byleth spied a large burn on Raphael's shoulder and winced. The sooner they got back to the monastery, the better. Claude explained the plan quickly, keeping one eye on the beast as it continued to slowly rouse itself. Most of the Deers initially rejected the idea, as they hated the idea of leaving their two most trusted members behind. However as the sounds of the beast rising from its brief respite grew louder, they slowly agreed to the objective and prepared themselves to run.
Nodding to each other, Claude sent out a particularly large and vicious volley of arrows; the beast immediately roared as they peppered its scaly head with small cuts.
"Let's advance" he gestured to Byleth, her nodding as she slowly moved towards the giant creature with her sword firmly in her hands.
Hearing her students slowly back away behind her, she sent out a lash upon its chin, leaving a slight red welt where it hit the beast. It was growing furious; steam was billowing out of its mouth and its eyes were red with rage. Fortunately, it was so angered with Claude and Byleth that it had not a glance to spare towards the other Deers; Byleth felt cool relief run through her system as the sound of increasingly distant footsteps running away from her position behind her. She sent out another lash but jumped back at the last second, only barely avoiding a small but potent fireball that singed the grass she had been standing on. Claude fired off more arrows; snarling the beast finally regained its footing on all fours and started towards him with heavy loud stomps. She whipped her sword out again, but the beast did not turn towards her like she had hoped, continuing to stomp towards the archer. Grimacing, she struck again and again, until the beast reared its head around; sensing an opportunity she aimed for one large eye and slammed her sword forward. As the beast recoiled, Claude caught onto her line of thought once more and aimed an arrow into the same eye, a perfect shot piercing the iris.
The beast shrieked in pain, throwing its large head back. She could see Claude use the brief distraction to back up, moving closer towards her while keeping his bow squarely trained on the beast's head. It was still making noise, eye dripping blood onto its' nostrils and chin. She felt a brief stab of relief; relief that was quickly short lived when the creature whipped its head around to stare down the two, one working red eyeball alight in anger.
She had forgotten something important; cornered animals were the most dangerous and a beast was no different.
It roared and with outstanding speed, trampled towards them with single-minded determination. They both barely managed to leap out of the way, cratered dirt where they had been standing. It roared again and turned, heading towards Claude's surprised form, fueled by nothing but bloodlust. Her heart pumping with fear, she desperately lashed out with her sword but the beast barely felt it. The creature had only missed Claude by an inch, but he been knocked off his legs and fallen-!
The beast turned once more. A claw the size of a horse, raised in the air above him.
"NO!"
A sickening crunch, a sharp yell of pain that trailed into a high gurgling whimper and then silence.
Byleth stared, uncomprehending. She saw the blood stained yellow of his uniform, slowly turning burgundy. She heard his cry of agony. And yet it felt like nothing was real; an abstract nightmare that kept her up on nights when she had consumed too much tea before bed. The scream from her own mouth felt like a line in a play.
The beast lowered his head and oh Gods, it was eating him, it was ripping apart Claude-
The sight of its red jaws made her feel like her blood had frozen in her veins. She was growing lightheaded at the grisly scene before her, but as she stared down unblinkingly at the clawed up body formerly known as Claude in front of her, one realization became increasingly clear.
Gods damn her, she was going to use one more Divine Pulse. She wasn't leaving without all her Deers and the most important one was not coming back to the monastery in a coffin. She couldn't leave him here.
She let the familiar feeling of the magic settle around her, even with her body and mind screaming in protest as the air around her seemed to be suffocating her from the outside. The lightheaded feeling turned quickly into nausea and increasingly severe pain, a stabbing headache seizing her as she closed her eyes. She felt awful, like her body was being torn away little pieces at a time, but the feeling in her heart of seeing Claude fall was even worse and spurred her onward. The pain was overwhelming but she could feel the magic slowly turn back the time; she closed her eyes in agony, gritting her teeth as she resolved to make it through long enough to save him as the world around her seemed to rewind.
She was adrift in a sea of pain and silence, until-
"RRRAGHH!"
The roar of the beast, screaming as Claude's arrow pierced its eye once again. Sweet relief shot through the pain; she had made it back! And she could still.... could still...
She couldn't move.
Her body collapsed under her, little stars shooting above her eyes. She screamed internally, willing herself to open her mouth and yell at him to run, move! But nothing came out, the Divine Pulse rendering her body useless and her mind aching in agony as she lay in the grass unable to move a muscle. She felt something run down her chin and realized with a groggy start that her nose was bleeding. She could barely think at all anymore, the view of the night sky on her back becoming hazy... she had to tell him... to run...
"Teach? Teacher, get up! BYLETH!"
'Get out of there, you fool...' is the last thing she thought, his worried face as he crouched above her fallen body fading in front of her heavy eyes.
               ----------------------------------------------------------
"....-coming to! Thank the Gods, I thought she might never wake..."
"Give her some space, she doesn't look well..."
Byleth groaned weakly, familiar voices that she couldn't currently place far too loud in her ears. She cracked one sore eye open, wincing as voices around her bed cheered in relief. She blearily looked around, her whole body aching - she could see the blurry faces of students peering with concern at her, surrounding her on a sturdy medical cot.
"Professor! We t-thought the worst..." Marianne whispered weakly on her right, voice breaking in relief as she clutched her hands together.
"I told you! You can't keep our awesome teacher down!" Raphael said heartily, smiling down at her from where he was standing by the window.
She blinked a few times, taking the faces of her Deers in with increasing relief. They were spouting bandages of their own in various places, but thankfully none with any lasting damage.
"Everyone... I'm alright. Sore, but alright. What happened with the beast?" she rasped, voice cracking with disuse.
"Well we were running for it and made it back to the road to the monastery. Then Claude comes blitzing in behind us with you on your back! Said you collapsed or something, he was super out of breath. I took over from there and carried you back... hopefully you didn't get any extra bumps or bruises from me, Professor" Raphael explained, looking a bit sheepish.
"Thank you Raphael, you were very brave. You all did very well considering what happened" Byleth smiled weakly, slumping back in relief at the news that Claude had escaped without injury.
"The beast disappeared, though agents of the Church of Seiros are trying to track it down as we speak. Claude was at your bedside for quite some time, but had to leave to explain the situation to Archbishop Rhea. It sounds like neither of you will face harsh consequences as the situation was unprecedented" Lorenz stated, his clipped tones at odds with the relief on his face at seeing his professor awake.
Byleth wanted to ask more but words were starting to fail her; Annette seemed to notice and offered to grab her designated healer. Byleth nodded and the ginger-haired girl returned with a motherly looking mage in white robes, who peered down at Byleth in concern over her spectacles.
"I'm not sure how you managed to exhaust your magic so severely when you aren't a mage, but I am aware you have particular talents requiring spiritual energy. Nonetheless, I would recommend never doing such a thing again."
Byleth nodded to appease the older woman, though hearing that Claude had returned alive had convinced her she had made the right decision. A decision that made her whole body ache, but the right one in truth. She could never regret saving Lorenz from a bad injury despite his sharp tongue and poor Annette didn't deserve a broken leg. And Claude... even only half-awake and dazed, she could still hear the exact scream Claude made when he'd been crushed playing in her head like some horrible echo.
Still, she'd be saving a fourth Divine Pulse for emergencies only; she felt like the beast itself had trampled her into a flat pancake. The healer offered a spell to send her into a painless sleep for the afternoon, which would boost her recovery. Currently content that Claude and her Deers were alive at the very least, she agreed to the treatment. Her students gave their goodbyes and well-wishes (Marianne said nothing but gently squeezed her hand) and soon the older healer had sent her into a comfortable, dreamless doze. She smiled as she felt drowsy but relieved once again, bright green eyes on her mind as she slowly drifted off.
                      -----------------------------------------------------
Byleth yawned, slowly waking up from the sleep she had been placed in the day earlier as birds chirped alongside the rising sun through the window. Already she felt a little stronger, though she likely had to face bed rest for the next few days judging by her aching muscles. Gods knows how Sothis would react to her recklessness next time they talked...
She yawned again, blearily rubbing at her eyes.
"Hey, teach."
She started, eyes slowly tracking towards the familiar voice. Claude stood in the doorway, a sad smile on his face as he looked over her tired frame in the bed.
"Claude...!" she said weakly, her heart lightening upon seeing him alive and well.
She'd been told this by the Golden Deers of course, but it was hard to fully believe with the awful memory of his death echoing through her brain on repeat. Now as he made his way towards her bed, sunlight running across his spotless uniform, the full weight of the grisly scene was finally unburdened. His slightly ruffled bed head, his searching green eyes, everything was so alive and warm.
"You look surprised to see me alive and kicking. It's a little offensive!" he teased gently, coming to lean up against her bed with his arms crossed facing her.
"I'm more surprised I made it out. Raphael said you managed to carry me?" she inquired, confused.
"You scared me, seriously. I was so worried and full of adrenaline, I'd gotten halfway through the trees with you on my back before I realized I had done it" he said, smiling softly.
"Interesting Plan B, that one" she joked quietly, glad to see him teasing her like nothing had happened in the first place.
"Well, my plan B didn't include you collapsing..." he trailed off, eyebrows raised in clear expectation of an answer.
She paused, good mood rapidly disappearing. It was little use hiding things from Claude; he'd already proven to be a master at reading her face. She was not in the least surprised when he continued.
"You used that ability of yours, didn't you? But you shouldn't have" he questioned softly, smile gone from his face.
She slowly shook her head.
"No. I knew I was overusing it at the time, but... I..."
"Did I get injured?" he pressed, leaning slightly forward.
She pursed her lips, keeping deathly silent. He chewed his lip, looking pensive.
"Then... I died. Didn't I?"
Byleth swallowed. She tried to keep a straight fact but it was already too late; Claude leaned back, looking thoughtful once again.
"It's pretty pathetic that I died in the first place. Sorry you had to endanger yourself for my carelessness" he said calmly, casual tone suddenly infuriating her.
"Don't say that. You were brave and I didn't do enough, I had to watch as-"
She shut her mouth, embarrassed by her outburst and the sudden onset of tears pricking her eyes. Claude immediately looked guilty, hands twisting together.
"I-I didn't mean to joke! I'm sorry, truly. Please don't get upset over my idiocy" he soothed, leaning forward to wipe a tear away.
She nodded, supremely embarrassed at her emotional state. It wasn't like her to get overly weepy around others, although the stress of the past days was slowly catching up to her. Claude noticed this and stepped away from her bedside, looking regretful.
"I'm sorry for making light of the situation and riling you up when you're tired, Professor. I-"
He stopped for a moment to think, then continued on.
"I'm casual around a lot of people because I... I don't truly trust that many people in my life. Friends I have many of, but few true confidants. But please believe me as sincere when I say I trust you. And I owe you for this."
Byleth smiled, touched at the admission.
"Thank you for trusting me Claude. And you can pay me back by getting the highest mark on the next Fodlan history exam" she replied with a smile, giggling softly at his laugh.
"Then I better get started on my readings of Fodlan History Volume IV, huh? Thank you again, teach. Make sure you get some well-deserved rest. You're an irreplaceable part of the Deers, so get better soon!" he replied, gently patting her shoulder before leaving the medical room with a smile.
She sighed happily, feeling bone tired but satisfied that the ordeal of the last few days was finally beginning to close. Even as she fell back into a half-conscious state against her pillow, lesson plans and tactics drills were floating in the back of her mind.
No more sacrifices; they were going to lead the Golden Deers to success together.

An Interview with Karen Bradley, DVM
Karen Bradley, DVMWomen’s Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative President. @karenbdvm Facebook Goodnewsforpets.com Publisher Lea-Ann Germinder met Dr. Karen Bradley for the very first time in the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference Just a Couple of weeks ago.  After attending 17 AVMA Conventions, it appears impossible to have missed her before, but we sure did.  It will be impossible to miss her now and for good reason.  As president of the newly formed Girls ’s Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative WVLDI, she’s poised to kickstart the veterinary profession ahead and lead to a way that suits today's veterinary profession, the public and the animals we love and care for just fine.  There have already been many articles written about the WVLDI initiative, so this informative article takes a bit more private look at Dr. Bradley with plans to have a look at a few more of her contemporary veterinary colleagues that are changing the face of veterinary medicine.
Every veterinarian we’ve interviewed has a narrative about deciding to become a veterinarian.  What is your story?
I may be the exception rather than the rule--it feels like many veterinarians understood what they needed to do since childhood but I didn't.  I was among those kids that had many livelihood in their “I wish to be” list and even began college with a music scholarship for flute performance and a declared major of English.  It was at that early school time that I met a woman veterinarian at our regional veterinary clinic.  She was recently graduated, young, clever, patient and affectionate.  She was probably just about 8 years old than I was, and I understood that I was very interested in being like her.  I had always loved animals and I was very good at science and mathematics, loved biology.  Here was a role model, a woman doing what I'd previously seen “grandfatherly” guys do.
My grandmother, a chemist for the National Institute of Health in the days when most girls did not pursue such mathematics professions also had a whole lot to do with it.  I always admired her powerful science career option --she also was a music major (a concert pianist who changed her major after accidentally receiving the incorrect low grade for music performance!  Once she was made conscious of the error, she decided to not return .)  I changed my major to biology and gave up the music scholarship on the road to enter veterinary college.
As a woman were you frustrated from becoming a vet?
I never felt that I was discouraged by being a vet for a woman.  I grew up at the “Free to be Me and You ” times, therefore I always believed I could do anything, and that girls could play with boys and trucks .  The only discouragement I received was from college advisors who wanted me to be aware how very difficult it was to enter veterinary college and that I should have a back-up plan if I failed to obtain admittance.  I never came up with that backup plan.  Thankfully I didn’t want one!
What is your favourite part of practicing veterinary medicine now?
I still love the fact that I might observe a challenging case or any sickness I learned about but never had the opportunity to diagnose or treat — my patients and clients can keep me on my toes!  I like working with my fellow veterinarians to aid a patient and truly enjoy watching my veterinary staff team take such amazing care of the patients we visit.
Women now represent 75-78 percent of the veterinary profession and the profession surpassed 50 percent women in 2009.  What do you think draws a lot of women to the health care profession?
I am certain that there's statistics or data from surveys for this question but my opinion is that veterinary medicine appeals to the science girls in a way that the other health professions do not.  It has all the discovery and science aspects while you get to do, or learn to perform, cool things like use zoo animals and individuals ’s pets, horses, or livestock.  Veterinary medicine is a simple livelihood to see yourself performing --that doesn’t wish to play baby animals all day?
Kidding aside, I believe some women are attracted to the ability to become a physician but for non-human creatures.  And veterinary medicine requires you to work with clients or pet owners or farmers and collaborate on what is best for the animal or animals in question.  Scientific discovery, collaborating for solutions, and nurturing patients and individual relationships are a natural match to female nature.
How can you discover the time to become involved in your state veterinary medical association?  Were there any particular issues you're interested in impacting?
I was quite blessed to be recruited into my country veterinary medical association activities along with the subject that caught my attention was animal welfare.  I slowly added more to my plate by spearheading the effort to receive a lobbyist to monitor for issues that might influence our penis veterinarians and then finally headed to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) House of Delegates representing my state.  One of my veterinary partners who's 20 years my senior was a role model for this too.  She'd been very active on our Vermont Veterinary Medical Association Executive Committee and served as the AVMA delegate, so it looked pretty natural to be involved in such actions.  She'd done it as a single mother and practice operator, so I suppose I just saw this involvement as something significant.
With assistance from my veterinary spouses, who also find the value in this participation, I am encouraged and ready to obtain the time too.  If something is important to you, you find the time for it.
Would you tell us about the Women’s Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative (WVLDI) and your own role?
The WVLDI is formally a 501c3 non-profit.  I can't take credit for its presence by myself.  Like any good initiative, there's a group of dedicated men and women who are collaborating together to make this possible.  All I did was believe there was a need to begin such a group and was blessed that my experience in AVMA activities had allowed me to cross paths with some amazing leaders during our profession.  I sat down with Dr. Stacy Pritt in the July 2013 AVMA convention and we were joined by Ms. Julie Kumble, interim CEO of the Women’s Fund of Massachusetts, who works with women on gender issues in politics and careers and spanned the beginnings of the initiative.  Together with Stacy’s experience in the Association of Women Veterinarians and vast AVMA experience--and a husband who's a web developer, we had the www.womenveterinarians.org site live within fourteen days.
When I called another Board members and asked them to come together with this, they said !  Our Board of Directors has the talents and skills of: Dr. Donald F. Smith of Cornell University Center for Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Eleanor Green, Dean of Texas A&M University CVM, Dr. Stacy Pritt of UT Southwestern in Texas, Dr. Lori Teller, a professional in Texas, Dr. Valerie E. Ragan of Virginia-Maryland Regional Center of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Rachel Cezar together with the USDA Horse Protection Council, Dr. Douglas G. Aspros of New York, the AVMA immediate-past president, Ms. Julie Kumble, interim CEO of the Girls ’s Fund of Massachusetts, and Ms. Cassandra Tamsey, class of 2015 Texas A&M University as our furry student on the WVLDI Board.  With support and cooperation with AVMA, we have been even more fortunate to have Dr. Elizabeth Sabin, AVMA Director of the Diversity Initiative unite us as an ex officio Board member.
You made a decision to start the Initiative utilizing social media.  Why was that?
The idea occurred to me this summer a Facebook group might be a means to get people who care about women’s involvement in veterinary direction to speak among themselves, to network and connect between meetings.  I understood this might be a way to help encourage, nudge, push, and empower more women to wish to be involved.  And let’s face itit’s easy!  I popped up a Facebook group and right then a Linked In group readily and then began inviting and urging other people to invite people to join.  Social networking is so accessible and can be crossing the generational split to bring individuals together for media.  We have 620 Facebook fans, 300 Linked In members and are growing every day.
Are men involved with the initiative?
Yesfrom the get-go!  The WVLDI is not a man-bashing group, it's a women’s resource group.  Our Board of Directors has two guys and the social media groups have many men as members and participants.  We need men who are leaders in the career right now with us, teaching and learning and developing together.  The goal of the Initiative is to reach gender balanced leadership--you wouldn’t have that with no men.  I like to remind the male leaders that they all have girls that are important to them — daughters, wives, mothers, sisters, nieces, granddaughters these guys wish to see achieve success and respect in their lives and professions.  They will need to join in this effort as though it is those women that are very important to them they are helping to elevate.
How can someone get involved?
Join our Facebook and Linked In groups.  We're growing and evolving daily --we’re still in our fledgling phase.  Locate our present opportunity postings by following Facebook or Linked In, or in the near future by checking www.womenveterinarians.org and join with us in case you are interested in these opportunities.  Come to our demonstrations at the national conventions such as the North American Veterinary Conference, Western Veterinary Conference, SAVMA, regional meetings, and also the AVMA convention.  Join the dialogue on the sex leadership gap and help us find ways to narrow this gap.
Are there anything else you would like to include?
It’s thrilling and exciting to find this initiative rise in just six short months.  This year, we're off to a great start from the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference and now planning to have students become actively engaged and many more ideas are being created" all built on positive energy and optimism for what the future holds.

How To Pronounce Reiki
But, in order to learn Reiki for healing.Using the suggestions of Wei Chi, the Reiki Master is required is that Reiki doesn't work. But if you're looking for and actually doing everything you need to create a better chance at a specified time and energy should find them a great collection of reiki master. The reason that Reiki is to re-align and bring a degree of Reiki energy. The body absorbs solar energy through the hands of the situation you are living a spiritual practice, that taps into the energy and is now much debate about which is considered an alternative healing methods complementary.

Sex, fetishwear, furries, meatloaf recipes
Yep a post about sex
Lots of weird sex
BDSM, butt stuff...
And the secrets to making the best meatloaf ever.
Which somehow is involved with the sex stuff
So if you're my kiddo, you'd be very sad reading this.
Ok I think it's safe now.
This post has nothing to do with sex, fetishwear, or furries. Sorry for getting your hopes up. I just don't want my kids to read it. Having your kids on Tumblr with you (my daughter is the one who encouraged me to start posting here) can be awkward sometimes.
My meatloaf secrets are using crushed stale (but quality) bread (not a box of "bread crumbs" prepackaged), soy sauce, and barbecue sauce. I didn't want to mislead you about *everything*. I was lying about sex being involved though. I do not recommend sex with meatloaf.
I haven't been posting much because I'm sad. My husband lost his job. We've never been wealthy enough to save very much. Does anyone else want to punch the writers of those articles that say "You should always have an emergency fund of 6 months salary set aside!" in their g*ddamned f*cking faces? When in f*ck do you think we've had enough after bills and student loans are paid to do that?
Student loans take half our income. I'm 42 and whatever total income I have, f*cking half is gone every month because my husband actually wanted to get a degree. I can't get aid like welfare or EBT (food stamps) because my income looks like twice that. And now it's nothing. So at least now I qualify for aid. Which isn't even as much as just *one* payment of these f*cking student loans.
My husband's family is amazing. They've offered to pay back the loans while my husband is unemployed. They also paid for takeout Chinese lunches for all of us as a treat.
Incidentally, my husband worked in a nonprofit for over 12 years. There's a program here in the US that pays off your loans if you work in a nonprofit for 10 years. But not if you miss even one payment. Then you're out. Which we did (miss a payment). Hilariously though, Trump didn't cancel the program but his people *did* take away the money intended to pay for it. So even those people who did do everything right still can't get their loans paid off. And this program only started ten years ago so they would only have started to be able to cash in on the program *this year*. Hahahaha. "If it's high quality evil, it's Trump brand evil!"
But I have no idea what's going to happen next in my life and it's making me very frightened.
I thrive on pattern and planning. This state of fear, financial insolvency, unawareness about the future makes me unable to sleep well. I am frequently tensing my muscles due to stress to the point that I'm sore all over all the time. I know I'm depressed. My memory is more faulty than usual. I have trouble feeling. I just feel numb and joyless. My stomach is paining me for no reason at all as best as I can tell. I live in a state of fear and sadness. My sensory issues are worse. My tolerance for the unexpected or unpleasant is greatly reduced.
I know it doesn't help anything to feel this way. I know it doesn't improve my life to be in fear. I just *don't know how not to*.
Incidentally, all our insurance was through my husband's job. It never paid for counseling anyway though.
I can't afford my dog's allergy medicine so he is genuinely scratching his fur and skin off of his face if he's not on a lap or supervised constantly. I left to go to church today and came back to raw flesh all over his forehead. He's allergic to fleas incidentally so not being able to get the cats flea medicine either is making things even worse. My dog adores me, but I can't help him. I feel like if I love him I should try and find him another home with people who can afford his medicine, but who wants a scabby, allergic, shy dog? I'd rather him be scabby and allergic than killed because no one wanted him. Plus he'd feel so betrayed. He is utterly devoted and that love is such a blessing right now.
Since I am a mom, I cannot express any of this at home. My kids need to feel like everything is going to be ok. My husband is stressed and worried too, and I don't want to make him feel worse. He didn't do anything wrong, they just shut down his division at work.
I need somewhere to vent. Somewhere I won't make things worse by expressing myself. Sorry Tumblr, you're it.
I'm so scared and upset, I'm in physical and emotional pain and all I can do is wait for my husband to get interviews. Im also thinking of applying to some walking distance crappy hourly jobs in the meanwhile. I just am not good at high pressure environments. I won't last, but even a few hours or days is money.
Positive things:
My middle kiddo, the 13 yr old genderfluid, outgrew their shoes. My minister gave them a new pair of shoes. Nice shoes even. They're an animal print in an athletic style and gender-neutral-named-kid thinks the shoes are great.
My husband does get paid (and have insurance) through the end of the month, so we're cramming dentist and medical visits in.
Our movie pass memberships were prepaid, so we can go to the movies for free every day.
My mom has an extra house, so if things get too bad I'll beg her to use it. She'll be mean about it and the house is hoarder-ish so I'd have to clean it, but it's still somewhere to live for free.
Tumblr is free. Cell phone service is free. I share a family cell phone plan with other people and this year is their year to pay.
My husband is sending out resumes and applying to dozens of jobs. Surely one will work out. He's an intelligent, witty and capable guy. He's physically disabled though, so I don't know if that will help or hurt his chances. Almost none of the jobs that are a good fit for his specialty are anywhere near where we live, so there's like a 90% chance of us having to move.
To all of you who post happy bunnies, funny cats, doofy dogs, emo sith lords, weird happy stories, THANK YOU!
To James Gunn (who will never read this) THANK YOU! I watch Guardians of the Galaxy (vol 1 and 2) as often as my family will put up with it. They are the happiest, most wonderful, uplifting films and I adore every single f*cking minute of them. (Except when Drax calls Gamora a "whore". He's a literalist. She's not a sex worker.).
If anyone actually reads this whole rant. Wow. I'm extremely surprised anyone would. It was spectacularly unrewarding and depressing. This is the end and there were no furries or fetishes. Hope you aren't too disappointed. But if reading this is the most disappointing thing in your life today, I'm officially jealous. :). (And I apologize. I don't want to be the saddest or most bothersome part of anyone's day, I just didn't want my kids to read this)

20 Questions with Dr Ferox #17
Time for another post of 20 questions and comments I’ve been asked recently. I’m not sure how well the tagging system is working at the moment, so if you’re waiting for a question to be answered I’d recommend checking manually.
@Its-janeway-or-the-highway said: For other useful bits of strine see also: Spitting the biscuit: throwing a tantrum out of sheer frustration, Bitzer: a dog that is of mixed, unknown origin (bits of this, bits of that), blood worth bottling: someone who is such an excellent individual their blood is worth bottling, such as Dr Ferox. I think your Aussie followers could have a field day with this subject.
We probably could, but the lingo also varies from state to state. For example, I didn't know for the longest time that 'Freckle' is also slang for 'anus', which gives a whole new meaning to “wouldn't give a fat rat's freckle” (means I couldn't care less)
Anonymous said: Guinea pigs or Hamsters? Which one is your fav?
I have been asked about hamsters several times, so I say it again. Never seen one. They're not available as pets in Australia.
Anonymous said: Can you tell us more about the issue of cropping and docking dogs ears and tails? Or if you know some good sites to read up on this info, where I might be able to read more about it? Thank you!
We're talked about it before on this blog. There's a handy dandy search function you can use as there's lots of posts that are worth a read, including those tagged with docking and cropping.
Anonymous said: As a Brit, and largely thanks to our celebrity chefs who like to advocate for ethical and sustainable meat-eating practices, I know that our welfare standards for veal calves are better than Europe at large, and also that, thanks to that preconceived notion of milk fed calves locked in a tiny crate, Brits are too horrified to eat veal at all. I wish people knew properly sourced British veal was much more ethical than exporting or simply shooting a male calf at birth :/ I'd support it if I could!
In Australia, a 'veal calf' is just a steer that hasn't been weaned yet, usually 200+kg, so is still being fed by its mother. Then they have one very bad day where they're 'weaned' and slaughtered on the same day, which isn't all that much worse than regular beef, in context.
Anonymous said: My cat passed away from kidney failure earlier this year. He'd been diagnosed very young but last year the vet decided to give him an ultrasound because he was curious and found out that his kidneys were terribly misshapen. He believed they had been like that since birth, and that his kidney function had always been compromised. I decided to cremate his remains, but now I am thinking that over again. Is it weird to tell a vet that they can keep organs as a teaching specimen if they want to?
Yes it's weird, but it's also very welcome if that vet has any connections with a university or teaches students. After death arrangements are a highly personal choice, and I wouldn't judge anyone for the choices they make. Keeping organs as specimens is a difficult conversation for a clinician to have.
Anonymous said: QT: came for mythical animals, stayed for the stories. Question: my dog will sometimes get his ear (not very long, and soft/semi-floppy) flipped/stuck inside out when he rolls around on the sofa cushions (which he loves to do). I flip them back by petting along the ear (it's super easy and there's no resistance, physical or behavioral) but I'm curious: does it hurt? It looks like it should. He doesn't seem to mind, but I don't know if that's just because he knows he can't fix it without help.
It probably causes no pain at all. And I dare say he could flip them back himself by shaking his head, most dogs can.
Anonymous said: What's your opinion on heated cat beds? Worth it if it's an older arthritic cat? Useless? Just curious. Also, Question Tax: Came here for the stories, stayed because I'm an aspiring avian vet.
Cats certainly enjoy them in the colder weather. I don't really like leaving the electrical ones with cords on while they're unsupervised, in case they get chewed or urinated on, and personally prefer the microwavable ones for that purpose. Care should be taken with cats that have mobility concerns to ensure they don't overheat.
Anonymous said: What is your opinion on cats eating bugs? If there is a fly in the house or a silverfish, basically anything non-threatening I can identify, I let my cats get it. However I am increasingly worried about spiders since I can't really identify them beyond daddy long legs and black widows (the only deadly type in my area) and even not so dangerous ones can have pretty painful bites. For the tax: what dinosaur would you have most liked to be a vet for?
Good luck trying to stop them from eating the bugs. I haven't figured out how to stop my boys from eating any bugs they catch.
@bighugmug said: Those capsule backpacks for cats are cute, but they look quite confined! Is there a vet opinion on how comfortable these are for kitty?
I don't know, and it probably depends on the cat. Cat's are not that bothered by being confined in transport, most cats like a box, and they tend to like a good vantage point to survey their surrounds, but it's not a carrier I see a lot of and I imagine would take some getting used to.
Anonymous said: If an animal is overstimulated and/or overly energetic, are they self-aware enough to try and calm themselves down?
Probably not.
Anonymous said: QT: I was actually sent one of your posts on euthanasia by a friend just after I'd had to put my 16yr old cat down & it really helped, so I followed! Anyway: my (~3yr old, 50lb, unknown mix breed) dog is friendly but cries literally continuously at the vet (& ONLY there), to the point that they told us they had to give him a treat to distract him long enough for them to hear his heart beat. How big a problem is something like this? Any stress reduction techniques you'd recommend?
Sounds like positive reinforcement with treats is probably the way to go. Short, consistent training sessions of 'happy vet visits' that allow your dog to associate the vet clinic with wonderful treats should make him feel more positive about the experience.
Anonymous said: feel free not to get to this for a while! i know your inbox must be bursting. i'm just wondering how preventable you think a urinary blockage in male cats is? mine doesn't have one but for some reason i am SUPER PARANOID about him getting one and i wanna do everything in my power to prevent it
I'm super paranoid about it too. Spending Friday night trying to catheterize a tiny, slippery cat penis is not my idea of fun, especially if it ends up being my own cat. Keeping them active and at a healthy weight is the single most important thing you can do to reduce their risk.
Anonymous said: I really hate to bother you, but I was wondering if tumors in a dog's anal glands is very serious. I recently took my dog to the vet for an unrelated reason and she told me that when she went to express his glands, she wasn't able to express anything and the glands felt very hard. She believes that it's either due to scaring or a tumor. If it is a tumor, the surgery is too expensive for me to ever afford. Will my dog be in pain without surgery? Could this be life threatening?
Unfortunately anal gland tumors usually are life threatening, and usually diagnosed too late to prevent spreading to the sublumbar lymph nodes. Malignant anal gland tumors will eventually make the dog sick, and as they grow they may prevent the dog from being able to defecate. You should discuss this with your vet.
Anonymous said: What are your thoughts on when to spay a bitch? We had a German Shepherd who passed away last year of hemangiosarcoma. We always wonder if this cancer was accelerated by the fact she was taking oestrogen- due to being incontinent- which we wondered about being caused by her spay. She was spayed at 4/5months old. I just wondered if you could sum up the possible implications of a spay pre and post the first oestrus, particularly for German Shepherds, but really all dogs. Thank you!
She probably did not develop the haemangiosarcoma (HSarc) from taking oestrogen. She probably developed it because she is a German Shepherd and it's one of the things that they very commonly do. Desexing does increase the risk of certain rarer cancers like HSarc and lymphoma, but not desexing drastically increases the risk of mammary cancer and pyometra. If hip dysplasia is not an issue, I'd consider desexing between 9 and 18 months for a female large breed dog. I am still very pro desexing.
Delayed desexing has also been discussed here.
@animaljunkie said: I'm an American vet student who is seriously considering practicing in either Australia or Ireland. Would you have any advice on career choices or practicing outside your home country?
I've never practiced outside Australia, but I would check what the requirements are for your employment with the national or state vet registration board for your country of choice, and it's probably wise to chat to other expats before committing to that idea.
Anonymous said: Hi Dr. Ferox! My roommate keeps buying her cats different types of food, and I was wondering is this could be harmful to them? The brand stays consistent, but she tends to buy whichever type (senior, weight management, indoor, etc.) is on sale. The cats are ~1 year and 5 years. And she doesn't do the 'wean off one food and onto another' thing. (Question tax: I hc that you -all vets really- look at animals with a mix of "you're so adorable" and "so many things could go wrong with you") Thanks!
If it hasn't caused an issue yet, it probably wont. Most issues from sudden food changes are vomiting or diarrhoea, and I'm sure you'd notice if it was an issue. Some animals have tougher stomachs than others, some are exquisitely sensitive and can only stomach one flavour of one food without gastroenteritis.
And yes, there are so, so many things that can go wrong with every singe animal. When you're trained as a hammer it's hard not to see everything as a nail.
@2goldensnitches said: Doc, we've recently acquired a kitten. Sometimes he knows how to use the litterbox, sometimes he wants to eat the sand. Why?
The whole world is a toybox to a kitten. It's most likely just learning and playing, but I can't guarantee it doesn't have some sort of pica and you should check with your vet.
Anonymous said: What kind of information should a vet be expected to know before I consider seeking help elsewhere? I recently had an avian vet do a house call for some birds, and he seemed knowledgeable. He was detailed and came up with a treatment plan that suggested he knew what he was talking about. Then he said, "Nothing's using the lower part of the aviary. You could put some reptiles in here." Is that a huge red flag? It seemed very wrong to me, but maybe that sort of thing isn't in a vet's wheelhouse?
It might not be part of that vet's knowledge base, though it seems a really odd thing to say. I can't imagine what they were thinking. If you're satisfied with the treatment of your birds then don't feel like you have to change vets, unless you want to of course.
@knikna said:Non-vet question for a bit of fun! If you had the Doctor's Tardis and could travel anywhere in space and time in this universe, where would you go first?
I would chose to go see a Thylacine. Past or future, I don't care. That way I'm unlikely to stuff up any kind of time-space continuum, and my own microflora wont cause any sort of massacre.
Anonymous said: Hi I just wanted to let you know I've been laughing at the fact your cat's name is trash bag for about an hour. I hope you and trash bag have a wonderful day
See, I knew it was a funny name.
Trash Bag has recently learned about the whole new world under the blankets, and how wonderfully warm they are for snuggles.

Common forms are collars which can be triggered remotely, or that are triggered by barking, fencing that delivers a shock when a dog wearing a special collar crosses a buried wire, and mats that can be placed on furniture to deliver a shock. Some aids deliver an aversive such as a spray of citronella when triggered.[61] The use of electric shock aversives for training dogs is the subject of considerable controversy. Supporters claim that the use of electronic devices allows training at a distance and the potential to eliminate self-rewarding behaviour, and point out that properly used, they have less risk of stress and injury than mechanical devices, such as choke chains. Opponents cite the risks of physical and psychological trauma associated with incorrect or abusive use.[62] PURINA.COM.AU Force-free trainers Facebook © 2018 ^ Jump up to: a b Millan 2010, p. 87. Car insurance issues help wanted?
have a few issues I could really use some help with. The family car that I have been driving wasn't in my name but I was still covered on the insurance until one day I hit a mailbox with the passenger side mirror. The mailbox did not sustain any damage but the mirror somewhat did. I didn't call the police when it happened since the damage was extremely minimal. Anyways, then a couple weeks later a different family member (not the owner) had a little bit of a bigger accident when an animal suddenly appeared in front of the car forcing another accident. I have not had an accident in over 12 years but since I was mentioned after that second accident, I was also excluded from the insurance policy for that vehicle. The insurance cost is something like $158.00 per month but now they want the owner to add about $50 or $60 more per month EACH for the 2 people that were excluded because of the accidents. The car payment is about $415.00 per month and the insurance was $158.00 per month for just the owned which does not even drive the car at all but now they want an extra hundred per month for those 2 excluded drivers if they want to drive that car. Will this change if we switched insurance companies? And if I haven't had an accident in over 12 years, would it be possible to appeal that? Thanks in advance""

""Young adult, no health insurance, I need help!?""
I am going to make this simple as possible: During this year, Jan to March, I have been on my parent's insurance, NJ FamilyCare, which we were enrolled under free-care because we were horribly under the poverty line, or above it? We're poor, that's it. And on April 1st, I was terminated from my insurance, they are saying I am 19 years of age, thus I have no insurance. Late August we (as a family) re-applied with all our names, and sent the papers in. But with a lot of research, I knew I shouldn't have been, under the Affordable Care Act I should have been on my parent's insurance until the age of 26. I meet the requirements: 1. Dependent Adult (19 years old) 2. Full - time student, no college insurance. 3. No insurance for 6 months now. 4. Not employed. I know for a fact, that being a full-time student, and being unemployed, shouldn't affect this, but maybe it is? I talked to a representative from the welfare office, (where my parents applied) and the lady (rudely) told me that because I am 19, and in school, I was terminated. And my social worker won't be done looking at the papers until late November. WTF? That doesn't make sense, so I kept the battle on, and told her that I should be covered under the law. But after some bullsh*tting around, she hung up on me. So I called again. And this time, another lady was saying, her son who is 20 years old, is insured under her insurance, and that I should come in with my parents, and tell our social worker that I am a full time student, who can't afford to be employed, (because of my 21 credit semester), I am dependent, and I have no job. I was like, well, it's not like I don't want a job, I just can't find the time to have one. I used to work 12 hour shifts, so don't think I don't like to work. The main reason I need the insurance, is because of my ADHD and Mania. I also always get sick, and have kidney problems. But with this, I still can't imagine why I was terminated. The lady told me I shouldn't have been under the law, but different people have different ideas... So, I will go to my social worker on the Tuesday, and find out what's happening. But I know I should be covered, and at least for my sake until I am 23-24. To which I plan to graduate and get my own insurance, and home. But if it doesn't work out, what other low-payment options are there? I heard about NJ Protect, but it's expensive on my part, and no way can I burden my parents with out-of-pocket payments. Thanks in advance.""

okay, ive been driving for about 3 years now (im18) and in those 3 years ive had to pay about over $200 a month for car insurance plus the yearly down payment of $600. and in those 3 years ive never been in an accident. im always cautious, drive good, etc... where has all that money gone? its a robbery i tell ya. its a scam, a waste of money. an extra burden on our shoulders. now my license is suspended for not paying insurance. i barely have enough to pay rent and other bills. so why pay $200 a month for something i dont need? there must be some other way. i know what you people are gonna say. your too young, you could get into an accident and all that other bull shte. and thats all it is. bull shte. or, you never know when the accident will happen. okay. but what about the 3 years? 3 times 600 down payment is 1,8000. plus the 200 time 36 months is. $9000 total... wtf? and if i ever did get an accident, it wont be as big as that of a bill. all im saying is. is there any way i can legally drive without having to pay insurance? i live in florida. what if i got a lawyer to fight the case. saying car insurance is a fraud?""

Accident in a WalMart parking lot and the other party's insurance denied my claim... any advice?
Hi everyone, I would appreciate your ideas regarding the following situation: My son had a car accident last week in a nearby WalMart parking lot (Dallas, Paulding County, GA). He was driving down a parking lane and hit a car which came out of nowhere cutting across the aisle. Both vehicles had extensive damage (front of the vehicle on our car, and driver side on the other car). There was a gentleman who saw everything and called 911. The sheriff's deputy arrived at the scene promptly. He explained there would be an accident report, but since this happened in a private parking lot, he was not in a position to state who was at fault. I got the report the other day and it states the facts about the accident and gives the contact information for the witness. I have spoken with the other driver's insurance company three times and I just found out that their claims rep has determined that my son was at fault, so they have denied my claim. The claim with them was actually originally filed by the other driver. I politely asked to speak with a supervisor and was advised that I should expect to receive a call from a supervisor soon. I did not get a chance to talk to my insurance rep after I found out the other insurance denied the claim, but I am not sure if there is anything my insurance can do for us, especially given the fact that we only have liablity coverage on this vehicle (no collision coverage either). I think it is really outrageous how they could claim my son was at fault, if all evidence points to the fact that their insured was driving across the parking lanes and obviously did not see our car. I cannot find anything online (like traffic regulations) that explicitly says that the driver cutting across the parking lanes is at fault if there is a collision, but I think it is common sense that this should be the responsible party! If anyone has had a similar experience, or has any suggestions, your help will be very much appreciated!""

My Car Insurance won't cover this?!?!?
I got into an accident on a rainy day. I did not hold collision or comprehensive. Because I skidded into a ditch and the car rolled, an oil leak occurred. The fire department came and had to put oil dry on the oil leak which was saturating the ground. I hold all the other coverages (liability/property damage, underinsured/uninsured motorist/medical). The fire department bill for the oil leak clean up / hazard removal was $500. The car insurance company says it falls under collision and since I don't have it they don't have to pay out the $500. I insisted it was under liability / property damage as the oil leak is a hazard and causes property damage. Is this fair that they said it falls under collision? Or should I fight it. If so how?""

Car Accident - Auto insurance Question?
Today I was involved in a horrible collision. Car made a complete stop put hazard lights on, I made a complete stop at a reasonable distance however 15 seconds after I stopped I look at the mirror and a taxi van cab slams right into me my car goes flying forward hits the truck infront of me and bounces back, air bag goes off . Long story short I'm in horrible pain and have evident bruises . Police arrived filled out reports. The man that hit me was found at fault for both collisions. So my major concern is : I called my insurance company , made the claim they took down all the info but at the end of the conversation she told me that if I don't have full coverage I'm out of luck then she asked me if I do which I don't remember . So I'm taking a look at my policy contract and I don't see anywhere where it says full coverage ... I think it is full coverage since my car was being financed. All it basically says on the contract is liability limit $ 1 000, 000 So if they write off my car what happens next?""

My boss had never handled maternity leave before, and I think he did it wrong. A few weeks after I gave birth he said he got a check from the disability insurance agency, it was made out to his business. So he cashed it and wrote me a check for the total amount from his business account. There was no explanation of how to dole it out, so he just gave me the total amount. Then, just now, 3 weeks later, I got another check mailed to my home from the insurance company?? What happened? The Start of a New Adventure
1 June 2017
When I wrote my last blog post of my study abroad year two years ago, I hoped I’d return to Athens and Italy someday, but I never dreamed I’d be doing so and reviving the blog only two years later!  And yet, here I am!
This adventure is thanks to generous funding from programs at the Cornell Vet School that allow students to do research and similar projects abroad, mostly in developing countries, but there’s also some available for other places.  As soon as I learned about the funding, I remembered the street dogs in Athens and how I’d always been so impressed by how they were well taken care of and completely taken for granted by locals, and wanted to learn more (and also wanted to go back to Athens).  I was delighted (and a bit surprised) to find out in March that my proposal had been approved and I would be going back to Athens for about 6 weeks.
I will be working for a program that just started in the past few months, called Protect Animals Greece (https://www.protectanimalsgreece.org/).  Greece doesn’t really have any humane society type organization or national animal welfare group; there are small private “welfare” groups, but half of them are scams meant to draw donations from wealthy Americans and British that aren’t actually put to the use they claim.  Last year, Dr. Bruce Fogle, Canadian by birth but Brit for most of his adult life, was asked by a Greek client to help their home city with some of the strays.  That got him thinking about the need for a real effort to tackle the problem, and he began the process of creating a charity that could help, drawing in top-notch veterinarians, entrepreneurs, lawyers, etc., all Greek, to start a board of directors.  The idea is to have the program be entirely run by Greeks but with international advisors (such as Dr. Fogle), and work to help raise interest in animal welfare in Greece, and draw support from expats and others who want to help but who have been discouraged in the past by not knowing whether the charities that sounded so promising would turn out to be scams.
PAG has started with some small spay/neuter efforts, but that kind of project isn’t really useful long-term unless we know the size of the problem and where it’s concentrated.  There have been some efforts, especially in India, to start auditing populations of street animals, which essentially consists of traveling the same route in part of a city three days in a row, and keeping track of the animals you pass, then plugging the data into Google maps, which will spit out a map of where the populations are the densest, as well as the health status in each area (so for example, one particular neighborhood might have a particularly high concentration of lactating bitches, so we’d know that that area needs a focused spay effort).  The man who developed that sort of auditing system, Lex Hiby, may be going to the island of Lesvos this summer to implement the program and train people (including me) in how to do it, so we can bring that knowledge back and apply it in other areas, such as in neighborhoods of Athens, before considering the best approach to spay/neuter, vaccination programs, etc.
My role in this whole thing is yet to be determined; I’m going to basically be an intern for the newly begun PAG, but will also make this trip to Lesvos if it occurs, and spend some time in clinics in Athens, mainly for my own edification/interest, but also maybe to talk to some vets about the importance of animal welfare efforts, because a lot of Greek vets are highly skeptical of welfare groups (with good reason, I think).  But PAG and other reputable organizations do need the support of vets, so we’re hopeful that we can bring at least a few around to wanting to work together.  I may also make a trip to Thessaloniki, where there’s a vet school, to see if there’s any interest there in developing some kind of a connection between their vet school and mine (Cornell) which could potentially lead to some exchange opportunities, or at least for each side to learn more about how things are done in other parts of the world and share the best aspects of each approach.
I started my trip with one day (almost) in London, where I stayed with Dr. Fogle and got to see his clinic (very different from what I’m used to; since property is so expensive in the city, his clinic has a 15-foot storefront but takes up 4 floors, with two exam rooms each on a different floor, and the surgery suite and radiology in the basement, with no elevator to carry the big dogs, but I was very impressed by how well laid out and organized everything was) and get an update on how PAG is progressing (they finally have an office, as of last week; they were supposed to open it in March but the hurdles of Greek bureaucracy prevented that).  I didn’t have long enough to be a tourist in London (I took a grand total of two pictures, one of the statue of Sherlock Holmes at the Baker street underground station near the clinic, and one of a Ben&Jerry’s vending machine in the airport), but maybe I’ll come back some day and see more of the city.  I’m now on my way to Bologna to spend some time with my aunt’s family, and I’ll go back to Padova for a day while I’m that close.  Then I’m off to Athens in about a week to really get started on my project - stay tuned!

Well, that was, interesting. No, it wasn’t a bad movie compared to the very first Power Rangers film. That film was terribly childish and atrocious. Even for a kid like me who watched it. This tried very hard to compensate for that one. We’ll review the film with spoilers so if you haven’t seen it yet, and want your dose of Power Rangers nostalgia, go see it for yourself and judge. If you want to know what this author thinks of the film, the read on. From the beginning of the film, we’re immediately introduced to a couple of twists. I thought this was going to be chock full of Power Rangers action as we see them immediately. Red, yellow and green that is. The twists involve Zordon being the original Red Ranger, and Rita Repulsa being the original Green Ranger. Interesting twists indeed and is actually nice. Unlike the original TV show (original being the US version’s first season), Zordon came to Earth thousands of years ago, not millions as shown in the film. The rangers are defeated at the beginning of the film with Zordon being the only one left. His last heroic effort is by hiding the Power Coins from Rita. You’ll be reminded of the dark bootleg video produced by Adi Shankar. Rita, as the Green Ranger stands victorious over Zordon until she is hit by a meteor (not that meteor) and is thrown into the ocean where she goes into suspended animation. Football star Jason gets detention after he tries to steal the school mascot. He meets fellow detainee and nerd Billy and saves the latter from the local bully earning his friendship while popular girl Kimberly also gets detention for posting someone’s naked pics on social media. They end up in the town’s abandoned gold mine along with two other students Trini and Zack who just go there to hang out. Billy detonates some explosives at the mine in an effort to continue his late father’s work. The group discovers Zordon’s Power coins before getting chased out of the mine by the authorities. They wake up the next day with superpowers and decide to return to the mine to investigate further. There they discover Zordon’s ship and meet both Zordon and his robot Alpha 5. Meanwhile, Rita’s mummified body is fished out of the water by Jason’s father. The body revives and immediately begins killing every person she encounters getting whatever gold she can get her hands on. Zordon tells the group his story, about them being Power Rangers and about the Zeo Crystal embedded in the Earth. The crystal is responsible for giving Earth its life force and that Rita is wants to take it thereby destroying all life. The teenagers still couldn’t morph so Zordon puts them on a training regimen because they have 11 days before Rita gets strong enough to take the Zeo Crystal. To inspire them, Alpha 5 shows the team the Zords but Zack takes his for a joyride causing damage. Jason and Zack get into a fight which Billy tries to break up inadvertently causing him to morph. Equally frustrated, Zordon dismisses the group. Jason goes back but discovers that another purpose of the team morphing was to open the Morphing Grid and allow Zordon to come back to life which Jason misinterprets as a selfish motive. For them to morph, they needed to form a bond so the team camps out and try to do so. Later, Rita attacks Trini at her home and tells her to get the team to the docks. Jason decides to take the team to fight Rita even without being able to morph. They lose, and Rita kills Billy by drowning him. The team takes Billy’s body back to Zordon where they all manage to form a bond thereby activating the morphing grid. But instead of Zordon coming back to life, Zordon gives Billy his chance. The team then becomes able to morph as Rita begins her assault on Angel Grove. The team first battles Rita’s Putties as she assembles her warrior Goldar. The battle proves too much for them, so they summon the Zords to clear out the Putties before fighting Goldar which proves too powerful. Goldar unearths the Zeo Crystal where the zords go into a last ditch effort to protect it. Goldar pushes all the Zords into the pit where they manage to combine into the Megazord thereby defeating Goldar and Rita. Rita is sent to outer space where she freezes. Like in the TV show, the team become heroes, but their identities remain unknown. They again meet up in detention where their teacher tries to call in another student name Tommy Oliver. Again, the film was okay. The main complaint is that the Power Rangers in their uniforms don’t go into action until the third arc of the film. We only get to see Billy transform earlier and the Zords’ intro perhaps to shoehorn in a Rangers’ related appearance during the long angst-y introduction and bonding process. Billy, played by RJ Cranston is perhaps the most interesting member of the group and has the most heart as a character. The most annoying aspect of the film was Trini as her reasons for having her attitude seem too shallow. The same goes with Jason. Kimberly’s detention offense is quite interesting and is very much opposite to her TV counterpart. Zack’s backstory is actually the one where audiences can really sympathize with as he and his sick mother live off welfare in a trailer near the mine. There is some action throughout the show. The beginning, the mine chase, the training montage, their first encounter with Rita and the actual Power Rangers battle. The main gripe for others who have reviewed the film is the lack of actual Power Rangers since they’re shown only in the film’s last 20 minutes. Some of the characterizations were just bad, especially Trini. Rita Repulsa seemed okay but her leaving everyone except Billy alive was a villain cliché. The Zord battle was great which offers some nostalgia to Power Ranger fans by paying the classic music for the Zords. The Megazord, while not well-received in the early toy reveal was great in the film though it would have been better if the film gave us a true transformation sequence instead of just being melted together in a fiery pit. Zordon and Alpha 5 were okay. Early views for Alpha 5 were also skeptically received but worked out real nicely in the film. Zordon’s character, however, seemed less wise than what we were used to. He had 65 million years to hone his character, much like Danny Rand had fifteen years to get his zen together in Iron Fist but didn’t. We could say, it’s not bad, but it’s not great either but it’s a start. If the film continues to pull in the tickets, there should be some sequels along the way. Let’s rate this 2.5 out of 5. Let’s get some more out of Jason next time round while they’re focusing on Tommy Oliver.

Killing a Application That Brings Records to Lifestyles
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Sept. 17, 1862, become the bloodiest war day in America Records. Extra People — a few 3, six hundred — died as Northern and Southern armies clash in the battle of Antietam, in western Maryland than on every other unmarried day before or considering the fact that, even More than on Sep 11.
100 and fifty years later, because the Countrywide Park Provider honored the horrible loss at Antietam, I stood at the stage in a big tent on the battlefield earlier than several hundred keen tourists, curious locals and enthusiastic Civil Struggle buffs of each age and starting place.
We had accrued to speak about a documentary made through Ric Burns based totally on a ebook I had written about loss of life and the Civil Warfare, a chronicle of the studies of Extra than seven hundred,000 People who died between 1861 and 1865, leaving a state of mourners in a global profoundly altered through the size of such human tragedy. The audience posed questions to Ric and me approximately History, approximately Struggle, about patriotic sacrifice, about American identification, about the meanings of Existence and dying and human mortality — and approximately how all the ones matters were each different and the identical across the century and a half of that separated us from our Civil War ancestors.
Ric’s film, and the transferring dialogue it generated, have been made viable with the aid of the Country wide Endowment for the arts. Reviews endorse that the Trump management’s coming finances will defund the endowment.
I’d wager that few readers of this newspaper, and probable few Americans everywhere, are untouched by way of an N.E.H.-subsidized project or Software. In 1990, for example, Ric Burns and his brother Ken produced an 11-and-a-half-hour documentary on the Civil Conflict that became broadcast over 5 consecutive nights and seen by Greater than 40 million visitors. For a whole lot of the kingdom, it turned into an early shape of binge-looking. the humanities endowment made that film viable.
Like its sibling the Country wide Endowment for the arts, the endowment brings the arts into components of the us of a that might in any other case in no way get to look a world-class museum exhibition or listen a lecture by means of a Pulitzer-Prize winner.
Closing year, the endowment marked the four-hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare’s dying by using sponsoring a 50-country excursion of his First Folio, published in 1623, the first collected edition of 36 of his performs. It changed into a fine dealer in its own time, and its 2016 travels furnished the occasion for performances, workshops, lectures and scholar field trips in locations as exceptional as Vermillion, S.D.; Long island, Kan.; and Juneau, Alaska. five years earlier, the endowment sponsored a comparable excursion — and 230 packages national — to have fun the four-hundredth anniversary of the King James Bible.
The endowment has funded projects which have made some 8 million pages of uncommon, crumbling ancient newspapers available to each person with a pc. It sponsors seminars that allow 2,500 excessive school and college instructors each summer time to complement their curriculum on topics starting from Appalachian subculture to Muslim identities to the poetry of Emily Dickinson. It has given assets for almost 4 many years for Countrywide Records Day, which has at once engaged More than eight million middle and high college college students with facts of the beyond.
It has supported the Trans-Atlantic Slave Exchange Database, a repository of information from nearly 36,000 slave voyages throughout the Atlantic. It sponsors the gathering, modifying and ebook of the papers of critical historic figures, like George Washington and Lewis and Clark. And it supports the Warrior-Student project, which organizes humanities “boot camps” to help put together veterans for the transition from the army to college.
The endowment enables People explore and higher understand how we came to be the nation, human beings and international we are. It demanding situations us to mirror on our identities as residents and as human beings, to ask profound questions on origins, legacies and which means, to ponder wherein we’re going as people and as a society and why. It links the beyond to the future and it connects anyone to the purposes that manual us. The work of the endowment nurtures our National soul. We need to make certain that it keeps.
The way to Create A “No Kill” nation
There are four key pillars which guide a successful animal welfare Software: spay/neuter help programs, adoption prevention and effective animal welfare regulation. ASPCA information imply 880 innocent animals perish each minute of each day in our country’s kill shelters. This is over five million animals each yr. Steps must be taken to forestall the slaughter of innocents.
ADOPTION IS THE excellent Alternative
Please undertake a pet, rather than buying a pet from a breeder. According to ASPCA statistics, nearly forty percentage of the animals in shelters are purebred. There is no shortage. Therefore, you could save a Lifestyles and pay a fragment of the value for the same animal in order to likely be spayed and neutered, vaccinated and tested for heartworms, parasites and other illnesses. You might not acquire that offer from a breeder. If you are not showing your purebred pet, there sincerely is not any reason for AKC certification. Also, remember adopting a blended breed canine or cat. combined breed pets generally tend to have a ways fewer health problems. Lastly, If you are inquisitive about saving a Existence, please take into account adopting pets which are difficult to re-domestic. Grownup pets make accurate own family participants. You understand what you are becoming from the start. Often, you could now not know how massive or what character your followed doggy or kitten can have until she or he is grown. Your children will love the Adult puppy just as a lot and also you need not worry about consistent supervision of the infant animal and your children.
Animal welfare groups engaged within the adoption of dogs ought to do not forget implementing a, “shop and Train” adoption Software. St. Seton’s has usually rescued all breeds of dogs so, I can talk best to dog adoption. facts positioned forth via the Humane Society of the us and the ASPCA indicate that ninety five – 96 percentage of puppies are surrendered because of behavioral issues. Our enjoy confirms this finding. Whilst this organization become formed, our go back rate became over forty percent. We felt we have been seeking to plug a leaky dam. We applied a shop N’ Teach Software. All Person dogs who show off behavioral troubles are skilled by means of foster/teacher. We Additionally worked hard to suit families with the personalities in their dogs. If the family turned into fairly sedate, we matched them with a sedate dog. Energetic households had been matched with Energetic canine. This system has been in operation for seven years. Our go back price dropped to less than one percentage. The small number of puppies again changed into due to a cause apart from the canine. In December 2008, our adoption Application received an award from the distinguished Maddie’s fund.
Regrettably, adoption, in and of itself isn’t the solution. There are 5 instances as many puppies and kittens born each day as there are people. These numbers are magnificent. At the same time as it’s miles crucial for animal welfare charities to keep as many of Those orphans as feasible, it can resemble trying to empty the sea with a teaspoon. Therefore, different measures are needed to combat the epidemic of puppy over populace trouble in our kingdom today.
SPAY AND NEUTER assistance programs
The best manner to we can become a, “no kill” kingdom is to spay and neuter our pets religiously. The prevention of the start of undesirable litters of kittens and puppies is the prevention of needless death of unwanted animals. It honestly is that easy. What isn’t always easy is the underlying motive of puppy over population.
There’s no clinical proof of the underlying cause of pet over populace however, arguably, the reasons are intuitive. A loss of sources to spay and neuter one’s pet seems to be a leading reason of this issue. Petsmart charities these days released a look at (click Right here) which shows that approximately 25 percentage of the human populace lacks the sources to pay for the surgical procedure. In step with the Humane Society of america, the common range of litters a fertile cat can produce is 3 per 12 months with each yielding four to 6 kittens. The common variety of litters a dog produces is in keeping with year with every producing six to ten puppies. If we recollect These averages observe to every of the kittens and dogs born to those litters, the results are surprising!

Adapting to Life
30 January 2017
I’m again on the bus to Lilongwe. I paid for the AXA Executive Coach, which is non-stop and has snacks and a bathroom. It is always totally full, crammed with people into tiny, distinctively not executive seats. I missed it, thinking it left at 7:30AM. It left at 7 so I’m on the local, which gets in an hour later but is only half full. I have the entire rear seat to myself; if I were tired, I could stretch out and snooze. I’m not, so I can spread out my stuff and write, knowing I am probably in the safest seat in the unlikely possibility of a crash. (That sounds a bit like the Carlsberg beer slogan, “Probably the best beer in the world.”  Not totally convincing.)  Unless the engine explodes underneath me, in which case I shall take the little red hammer from its hanger and exit a window promptly.  The very back of the bus exaggerates the bumps in the road, however, and I often type gibberish or grab my laptop before it sails off onto the floor
Yesterday we rented a car and drove to Mulanje. Linda’s very long-time friends, Pat and Stacy, are here from Santa Fe for 3 weeks. Pat’s a gastroenterologist and will teach at Queens; Stacy’s a retired attorney who will help with fundraising at Samaritans, the orphanage where I consult. We drove to the massif and partway around it on a dirt road, heading toward a forest lodge for lunch. On the way we passed through a small village and were approached by all manner of young men trying to sell us hiking sticks carved from Mulanje cedar, wanting to guard our car, and asking us to hire one of them as a guide to hike to the well-known nearby waterfall. I heard, “George” and looked up to see Lucius, who was a guard at a home on our street last Fall, fired for being drunk at work. (If I were a guard, making next to nothing to do next to nothing, I’m sre I’d drink, too.)  Needless to say, we bought the hiking sticks and hired both Lucius as guide and his friend, Alex, as guard. The hike to the waterfall was gradual, took about an hour, and the destination was very lovely, with a deep pool for swimming. We waded, not having bathing suits. On the path I spoke with Lucius about his life. He grew up in this tiny village at the foot of Mulanje. When he was in 10th grade, three years ago, both parents were travelling to Blantyre in a minibus that collided head-on with a truck. 15 dead, including his mother and father. He had to drop out of school to support the family. His two sisters are in school and he plans to return when they finish. There is a rueful sadness in his face as he tells me his story. It is like so many here, totally unfair and tragic. Only an extreme and heroic effort on his part, tempered with plenty of luck, will allow him to move beyond scratching for his subsistence for the remainder of his days, and he’s not yet 20yo.
I saw a 10 yo girl, Tokozina, as my last child patient for the day on Thursday. It was our second visit and promised to be lively. She’s had cerebral malaria and is the most hyperactive child I’ve ever seen. She is only moderately learning disabled, I think.  On the first visit she bounced all over the room, running like a flash, grabbing and tossing things, singing loudly while her mother ineffectually tried to contain her by reaching out as she flew by, etc. This mother is built like a tank and could give Mike Tyson a run for his money. On Thursday I told her they could only come into the room if she held her daughter on her lap. Well, that lasted about 15 seconds as the girl squirmed away and bounced all over doing her mischief. Seeing how ineffectual the mother was, I decided to model a safe, painless restraint. Needless to say, I ended up lying on the floor restraining her while she spit in my face and then urinated on me. I held fast and she calmed. Then I gave her to her mother who did the same and, after some tears, the girl accepted the inevitable and fell asleep in her mother’s arms. After wiping off the spit with my handkerchief and letting the pee dry on my soaking pants, I congratulated the mother on her success and impressed upon her the importance of training her daughter by performing a similar restraint whenever she was beyond the control of words. We’ll meet again in 2 weeks and assess the results. It felt like a very successful intervention. I, of course, will need to explore with the mother why she has held herself back so much.
A 12 yo boy was brought in by his mother. He’d undergone a “personality change” since being attacked by a neighbor in their village. Andrew ate a peach from the man’s tree so he threw Andrew to the ground and stomped on him, fracturing his left tibia. Andrew, always a gentle boy, has become aggressive, beating up his friends. He was expelled from school for fighting, despite being very smart and an excellent student. Another boy, like Japheti, with a persistent and loving mother who is determined to help repair the damage to her son. He was seen in Peds Emergency and, since he had a personality change in this land of cerebral malaria, HIV encephalopathy, and various forms of meningitis, instead of taking a careful history he has had performed all variety of laboratory investigations, including a lumbar puncture. Again, some training is needed there, which we’ll do soon. His response to the beating includes “identification with the aggressor”, his adaptation to feeling helpless in the face of a threat. It is the particular form his PTSD has taken.  He and I had a good talk, he was very engaged, and he agreed to return to school and attempt to not fight when he was upset. We’ll see. He is very bright, speaks English well, and is an incredible artist.
I’m going to Lilongwe in order to use the notary services at the American Embassy to finalize papers for the sale of 2840 Webster Street in Berkeley, our home for 25+ years. That should be the last formal exchange between my ex and myself, which will be a relief to us both, I suspect. I’ve felt I was in the grip of a python during the divorce---each time I exhaled (made a settlement offer leaning in her favor), the coils tightened. Rather than becoming more flexible and fair, she’d demand more. I’m certain she has her own version of the process.  So, as sad as it is to me to have not been able to grow in our love for each other as time passed, there is a time to hold ‘em and a time to fold ‘em. I only can hope that my children, each of whom I love dearly, can accept their disappointment at the end of the family as they knew it and wanted it to be and can view each of us as individuals with flaws and foibles but basically having given our best for them. I miss them both very much.
These are the hungry months in Malawi, when the maize is growing tall but not ready for harvest and last year’s supply of corn meal is exhausted. Many of the 85% of the population that are small-hold farmers and their families are lucky to have a single, modest meal a day. It kills me to see the greed and waste in America and to hear the “America Firsters”. It is a sad fact that we, of all the animal species, appear to have an insatiable desire to buy and possess. It is powerfully fed by the advertising/marketing industry and the mythology of our lives -----that it is better, somehow, to have more and bigger and newer and more extravagant stuff. Rather than to have enough for reasonable comfort and to take pleasure in the greater good that everyone has the basics. It is so easy to see someone on Welfare as a “loafer” and “getting a free ride”----I think they are sad, have low self-esteem, and have lacked the good fortune, perhaps the gumption, and the skills to do work that will bring them satisfaction.  Let’s re-establish the WPA and employ the unemployed while they learn skills and repair our infrastructure. But then, I have never wanted to not work.
I’ve had thoughts of spending the summers on the island in Maine and the rest of the year travelling, writing, and schmoozing with friends. I understand that most people haven’t had the good fortune to have trained for, sought, found, and performed work that they truly love and which remunerates them reasonably. This is often for lack of opportunity but may have multiple and converging reasons, including their drive, intelligence, health, capacity to persist, lack of skill, market forces, and so forth. So people cannot wait “to retire”, understandably. For me, I find learning and being inspired by people’s struggles irresistible, so it doesn’t feel like the time to fold up my tent.
I find Mr. Trump’s lies and hatred---just look at the expression on his current wife’s face after he reads her out in the 8 second video on YouTube---frightening, since he sits now where he does. We’re not just in for a fire sale of America to the superrich. That has been going on for the past several decades. We are now rapidly heading toward a fascist state, seeking total control of media with an essentially slave underclass that will include most of us. It seems there may be a violent revolution, given how polarizing, aggressive, and dissimulating Mr.T. is. One can hope for a coronary event or a cerebrovascular event or perhaps a metastatic event (in response to his near-constant exposure to Agent Orange!). I’m not savvy enough about economics to fully understand how we’ve arrived here. Our industrial output is up but well-paying, secure jobs are down, partly due to outsourcing but hugely due to automation. Paradoxically, I suspect that many of the same people who have been left behind in our economy shop at Walmart, buying those inexpensive outsourced products made by people in China and Bangladesh who have taken their jobs, keeping those sweatshops going.  The latter have certainly been eased into slavery, out of personal desperation. Just read about their wages, their working and living conditions, their polluted air and water, and the fragmentation of their families and their society, if you doubt me.
This post has gone on too long. I am passing through emerald hills, dotted with thatched mud-brick huts, all covered by the fluffiest, most towering cumulus clouds imaginable. Even all the plastic trash has vanished from the roadside, hidden by the tall grass. It is stunning.
Early in the morning one day last week as I biked past the local open market on my way to Queens, I saw  the stall keepers arriving with their vegetables or used clothing as they do each day, often 7 days/week. I realized, at a new level, this is their life.   They may instead sit at a card table and sell lollipops or AirTel phone top-ups, but they have no hope of a better living or life than they have right now. No kids in college, no promotion in the works, no end-of-year bonus, no cashing in on the sale of a start-up, no job or food security, no minimum hourly wage, let alone no luxury items, no increased reimbursement from a health insurance company, and so forth. And this is largely because of the cards they were dealt. Most are smart but have little schooling. Yet they are cheerful, laugh, and are pleased when I say a phrase or two in Chichewa to them as I buy some bananas or a pineapple. Humans are amazingly adaptable.
I hope our country doesn’t adapt to what our president offers to us, or tries for force upon us.

DC’s The Flintstones Was the Most Socially Relevant Comic of 2016
Had someone said a year ago that the sharpest social satire of 2016 would be a comic book revival of a 56-year-old animated comedy, we’d likely still be waiting for the laughter to fade. But while we did laugh at DC Comics’ “The Flintstones,” by writer Mark Russell and artist Steve Pugh, it was sometimes through tears. After all, 2016 was a pretty terrible year.
RELATED: CBR’s Top 100 Comics of 2016: #25-11
The original Hanna-Barbera cartoon was a thinly disguised spoof of “The Honeymooners” known for its juxtaposition of contemporary everyday life with a fanciful prehistoric setting, complete with anachronistic (and animal-powered) technology: Working-class family man Fred Flintstone operated the bronto-crane at the quarry, his wife Wilma swept the home with a baby woolly mammoth vacuum cleaner, and their neighbor Barney Rubble drove a wooden car that could be mistaken for an oversize pencil.
Those hallmarks are present in Russell and Pugh’s revival, of course, but never has the Modern Stone Age Family seemed so … modern, or so relevant to life in the present (occasionally painfully relevant). DC’s “The Flintstones” takes the satire of the 1960s animated series to another level, tapping into the darker corners of Bedrock — and modern-day life — for examinations of faith, politics, science, social institutions and morality. Suddenly, 100,000 years in the past doesn’t seem that long ago.
The Horrors of War
From “The Flintstones” #5, by Mark Russell and Steve Pugh
The first clues to Bedrock’s dark past appear early in “The Flintstones,” which exchanges Fred and Barney’s lodge, the Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes, for the Veterans of Paleolithic Wars. Its members wear the same funny furry hats, which turn out to be part of a military uniform, but instead of boisterous meetings they participate in support groups, sharing raw memories of a massacre. “The poor bastards didn’t stand a chance,” a teary-eyed Joe recalls in the first issue. “We set fire to their trees. When the smoke cleared, there were dead Tree People everywhere!” That bloody picture begins to come into chilling focus in subsequent issues, as Fred reveals, “We participated in a genocide, Barney,” a phrase you’d never hear on the ’60s cartoon. It’s Bedrock’s original sin, committed at the behest of Mr. Slate and his political ally Mordok the Destroyer, who manufacture a threat from the Tree People — “Maybe they will come out to burn you alive as they devour the flesh of your children. Who knows?” — as the pretense for a war to seize their land to build the city. Needless to say, the truth emerges too late.
RELATED: DC’s “The Flintstones” is a Surprisingly Dark — and Honest — Satire
But haunted memories of the Bedrock Wars are only the beginning of the problems for veterans. When they returned from the battlefield, they were greeted by a ticker-tape parade, soon followed by unemployment, homelessness and, as a suicidal Joe discovers, a lack of support services. A counselor does, however, provide the veterans with a nonsense phrase to help them cope with tense situations — it turns out “Yabba-dabba-doo!” is the “Serenity now!” of the Stone Age — and they are given lip service, even if they’re left waiting for a statue. That’s still a better fate than the Tree People, whose inglorious memorial is the mascot of Bedrock Middle School (“Home of the Fighting Tree People”).
Exploitation of Labor
From “The Flintstones” #1, by Mark Russell and Steve Pugh
Quarry owner Mr. Slate wasn’t the most sympathetic character on the TV series, and this comic certainly doesn’t cast him in a softer light. Rewarded for his role in the Tree People genocide with access to the granite beneath their land, Mr. Slate builds his empire on the spoils of war and on the backs of his employees. Preoccupied with his own legacy, he has no qualms about trying to exploit the Neanderthals — not, as he believes, Cro-Magnons — who come to Bedrock with “no formal concept of money.” Seeking to woo them with a creepy hot tub party at his mansion, Slate ends up using his wealth to pressure them into first eating a tarantula and then attempting to kill a mammoth for his entertainment (the latter doesn’t end well, for either the caveman or the mammoth). “No offense,” one of the Neanderthals concludes, “but it seems like the whole point of civilization is to get someone else to do your killing for you.”
Of course, if Mr. Slate didn’t learn anything from an unjust war, a rebuke from a Neanderthal isn’t about to trigger personal growth. So when an employee is trapped in a cave-in at the quarry in this week’s Issue 7, his concern isn’t the man’s welfare but instead a looming deadline. “Well, shame about the new guy,” he tells Fred. “But life goes on, right?” In fairness, Mr. Slate does feel guilty enough about his actions to seek absolution from the church, and the poster at the quarry clearly reads, “Try Not to Die.”
Religion and Consumerism
From “The Flintstones” #2, by Mark Russell and Steve Pugh
Speaking of the church, “The Flintstones” devotes significant space to an exploration of the intersection of religion and consumerism, which in Bedrock (and, arguably, elsewhere) are inexorably linked. It’s probably unavoidable as these Stone Age people transition from a nomadic existence, during which they worshiped a crane named Morp, to a more leisurely, civilized life, where they worship … well, that’s a work in progress. When the residents of Bedrock grow tired of one god, the First Church of Animism must scramble to find another, which isn’t easy, especially in a town where animals are used as household appliances and industrial machinery — the octopus dishwasher, the moose hat rack, the triceratops bulldozer, and so on. Wilma is shocked to discover their new god, Peaches the baby woolly mammoth, is actually a vacuum cleaner, which leads to another crisis of faith, and the introduction of an invisible deity named Gerald. Ah, progress.
RELATED: DC’s Hero & Hanna-Barbera Creations to Cross Over in March Annuals
But just as the residents of Bedrock collect gods, they also find themselves hording “crap,” the term for all of those items the don’t really need — and, in the case of the Flintstones, can’t really afford — yet are compelled to purchase in ever-growing numbers. The mounting costs push Fred and Barney to take side jobs selling vitamin supplements, which is actually familiar territory for the duo.
Animal Exploitation
From “The Flintstones” #4, by Mark Russell and Steve Pugh
Although one of the trademarks of the “Flintstones” cartoon was its inventive use of animals as appliances and tools, there was little thought given to the ethics of the scenario, or the lives lived by the can opener or the lamp (aside from the occasional humorous protest). It was an animated comedy, after all. But in DC’s revival, the plight of these animals is seldom ignored, whether it’s when a bird-blender labels the Flintstones’ pet Dino a “traitor,” or when Fred returns some of their unwanted “crap” to the store, only to leave with a bloody bag of “appliance feed.”
As in the cartoon, it’s usually played for laughs. But there are also touching (even heartbreaking) moments, such as when, free of human supervision, the armadillo bowling ball befriends the Flintstones’ woolly mammoth-vacuum cleaner, who spends most of its time shut away, alone, in the closet. The ethical questions more relevant to contemporary readers arise when Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm’s class visits the Bedrock Cave of Science and Technology, where they witness a chimpanzee launched into space in the most “Flintstones” way possible (involving an enormous dinosaur dropped onto a lever; see below). “Wait — did they just kill a chimp to impress a bunch of eighth graders?” Pebbles asks.
Marriage Equality
From “The Flintstones” #4, by Mark Russell and Steve Pugh
As the citizens of Bedrock adapt to their fledgling civilization, they not only embrace new gods (goodbye, Morp; hello, Gerald), they also abandon old institutions, like the “sex cave,” which we’re told was the precursor to marriage. However, they don’t give it up without a fight. As the marriage debate rages around them — one television commentator labels it “an immoral threat our way of life,” while a passerby refers to married people as “disgusting” — Fred and Wilma head off to a church-run marriage retreat, to see if it’s right for them. Despite himself, the hapless minister makes a strong enough case for marriage, and for change, to convince retreat participants and a mob of protesters that the institution is the way forward — that is, until he’s confronted with a same-sex couple.

But when he balks at Adam and Steve (that’s their names, really), Fred springs into action, relating the important role the couple played when he was a child in a tribe of nomads. His plea for love and tolerance provides the minister with food for thought, although it’s clear he won’t dwell too long on it.
Politics
From “The Flintstones” #5, by Mark Russell and Steve Pugh
Much like their modern-day descendants, the people of Bedrock fail to learn from their past. Although their war with the Tree People remains a fresh wound, the election of a new mayor takes place against the backdrop of a looming conflict with the Lizard People. To cement the parallel, the populist candidate Clod the Destroyer is the son of Mordok the Destroyer, who bangs the drums of war just like his father. The crowd chants “Clod! Clod!” as one supporter cheers, “He says the things I wish were true!”
Meanwhile, Bedrock Middle School faces its own choice in the election of a student president: between the bully Ralph, who steals lunches and threatens to “punch you in the beef,” and Portnoy, who offers a perfectly reasonable proposal for decreasing the number of kids plucked off the playground by pterodactyls. Ralph wins the debate by bullying his opponent — at least until Pebbles, often the voice of reason, speaks up. As she lectures her classmates about voting against their self-interests, it’s not difficult to imagine she’s addressing an audience outside of her school, or even Bedrock.
A Tribute to David Bowie
From “The Flintstones” #3, by Mark Russell and Steve Pugh
The launch of the chimpanzee Sergeant Grumbles into space triggers a series of events that leads to an invasion by alien space bros seeking a new spring break destination, sheds light on the mistreatment of veterans of the Bedrock Wars and introduces that most hated of characters from “Flintstones” lore, the Great Gazoo. However, the most poignant aspect of the issue is the tribute to David Bowie, who passed away Jan. 10, 2016: Titled “A Space Oddity,” the story features a panel in which lyrics from the singer’s 1969 classic are used to touching, yet humorous, effect. Right before Grumbles is sent to his death, in the name of science.
“The Flintstones” #7, by Mark Russell and guest artist Rick Leonardi, is on sale now.
