Saskatoon, Juneberry, Shadbush, Shadblow, Sugarplum, Sarvis, Serviceberry -- these are among the many names for Amelanchier. Ethnobotanists know that the more names a plant has, the greater its cultural importance. The tree is beloved for its fruits, for medicinal use, and for the early froth of flowers that whiten woodland edges at the first hint of spring. Serviceberry is known as a calendar plant, so faithful is it to seasonal weather patterns. Its bloom is a sign that the ground has thawed and that the shad are running upstream -- or at least it was back in the day when rivers were clear and free enough to support their spawning. The derivation of the name “Service” from its relative Sorbus (also in the Rose Family) notwithstanding, the plant does provide myriad goods and services. Not only to humans but to many other citizens. It is a preferred browse of Deer and Moose, a vital source of early pollen for newly emerging insects, and host to a suite of butterfly larvae -- like Tiger Swallowtails, Viceroys, Admirals, and Hairstreaks -- and berry-feasting birds who rely on those calories in breeding season.

In Potawatomi, it is called Bozakmin, which is a superlative: the best of the berries. [...]

For me, the most important part of the word Bozakmin is “min,” the root for “berry.” It appears in our Potawatomi words for Blueberry, Strawberry, Raspberry, even Apple, Maize, and Wild Rice. The revelation in that word is a treasure for me, because it is also the root word for “gift.” [...] When we speak of these not as things or products or commodities, but as gifts, the whole relationship changes. [...] I accept the gift from the bush and then spread that gift with a dish of berries to my neighbor, who makes a pie to share with his friend, who feels so wealthy in food and friendship that he volunteers at the food pantry. You know how it goes.

To name the world as gift is to feel one’s membership in the web of reciprocity.  [...] How we think ripples out to how we behave. If we view these berries, or that coal or forest, as an object, as property, it can be exploited as a commodity in a market economy. We know the consequences of that.

Proton, the secure-minded email and productivity suite, is becoming a nonprofit foundation, but it doesn't want you to think about it in the way you think about other notable privacy and web foundations.

"We believe that if we want to bring about large-scale change, Proton can’t be billionaire-subsidized (like Signal), Google-subsidized (like Mozilla), government-subsidized (like Tor), donation-subsidized (like Wikipedia), or even speculation-subsidized (like the plethora of crypto “foundations”)," Proton CEO Andy Yen wrote in a blog post announcing the transition. "Instead, Proton must have a profitable and healthy business at its core."

The announcement comes exactly 10 years to the day after a crowdfunding campaign saw 10,000 people give more than $500,000 to launch Proton Mail. To make it happen, Yen, along with co-founder Jason Stockman and first employee Dingchao Lu, endowed the Proton Foundation with some of their shares. The Proton Foundation is now the primary shareholder of the business Proton, which Yen states will "make irrevocable our wish that Proton remains in perpetuity an organization that places people ahead of profits." Among other members of the Foundation's board is Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of HTML, HTTP, and almost everything else about the web.

Of particular importance is where Proton and the Proton Foundation are located: Switzerland. As Yen noted, Swiss foundations do not have shareholders and are instead obligated to act "in accordance with the purpose for which they were established." While the for-profit entity Proton AG can still do things like offer stock options to recruits and even raise its own capital on private markets, the Foundation serves as a backstop against moving too far from Proton's founding mission, Yen wrote.

There’s a lot more Proton to protect these days

Proton has gone from a single email offering to a wide range of services, many of which specifically target the often invasive offerings of other companies (read, mostly: Google). You can now take your cloud files, passwords, and calendars over to Proton and use its VPN services, most of which offer end-to-end encryption and open source core software hosted in Switzerland, with its notably strong privacy laws.

None of that guarantees that a Swiss court can't compel some forms of compliance from Proton, as happened in 2021. But compared to most service providers, Proton offers a far clearer and easier-to-grasp privacy model: It can't see your stuff, and it only makes money from subscriptions.

As this year draws to a close, it’s time to announce the 169 Scavenger Hunter Reading Challenge 2024. This is a reading challenge which is hosted by me and takes place every leap year. The first one took place in 2020 and 2024 will be a leap year so it’s time for this challenge to appear. 

Rules & Levels

The challenge will run from January 1st, 2024 till December 31st, 2024. There’s a list of 169 items given below and your job is to find each item in the books you read. You can find multiple items in one book, or you can choose to read one book per item, that is up to you. 

There are levels of accomplishment based on how many items you manage to find in the books you read which are as follows: 

Bronze Level: 0 — 52 items

Silver Level: 53 — 91 items

Gold Level:  92 — 169 items

Rules Updates

The rules have been updated to clarify that previously posted works cannot be added to the collection. An exception to this might be a transformational work of a work already in the collection (for example, if someone makes a podfic for a fic in the collection and doesn’t add it to the collection initially, it could be added later.)

The rules were also clarified to disallow works which are entirely AI generated. Our Exchange Info gives a more detailed explanation of what we mean.

Nominations

There have been no changes to nominations.

Sign-Ups

Sign-Ups require a minimum of 3 ships for requests and offers instead of one. We've received sign-ups with very limited requests and offers lately which makes producing a match very difficult.

Sign-Ups now allow for up a maximum of 60 ships requested and an unlimited number of ships offered. Please see Tutorials - How to Sign-Up for more details.

Your requests cannot consist of entirely ships which use a DNW to limit your creator to creating for only your OC. For at least one of the three ships you request you should be open to receiving any OC (generic, one created specifically for your gift, or your gifter's OC) or should be a ship which has no original characters. Creating for other people's OCs is complex and is not something that everyone is able or willing to tackle within the context of an exchange, so participants should be willing to be flexible for at least one request.

If you are requesting art of your OC we ask that you have more than one reference for both face and body. Otherwise, artists may have a difficult time filling your request.

Eukarian Religious Rites & Festivals ;;

As Eukaris is a "jungle world," meaning that the entire planet is host to a tropical climate, seasons work a bit differently than the typical winter, autumn, summer, spring set-up in more temperate biomes.

A Eukarian autumn and winter is dry, with a slight drop in temperature (64 degrees Fahrenheit/17.7 degrees Celsius). There are also several more hours of darkness during the dry season, making it prime hunting time for the web-weavers and other nocturnal predators.

A Eukarian spring signals the return of more hours of sunlight and a rise in temperature (77 degrees Fahrenheit/25 degrees Celsius.) This is also the season in which most Eukarians experience their mating cycles.

A Eukarian summer hosts a rise in humidity and a further rise in temperature (83 degrees Fahrenheit/28.3 degrees Celsius.) This is also the peak of the rainy season. Frequent warm rain showers increase the growth of the plants seeded and pollinated during the spring; likewise, this is when the children conceived during the spring are born.

Now that the planet's seasons have been explained, it is easier to understand native rites and festivals, as a great portion of Eukarians are pagan and their religion is tied to their natural surroundings. The Eukarian calendar follows a different system (i.e., third moon of the rainy season), and seasons would be grouped like so (April-May=mating season, part of the onset of the rainy season but often viewed separately; June-September=rainy season; October-March=dry season), but I will translate the Eukarian festival dates into the Gregorian calendar. I will start with the festival closest to the beginning of the Gregorian year, and end in December.

March 15th: Nearly the end of the dry season. The festival of the coming of the light is celebrated, in which priests give offerings to Primus the Life-Giver in places similar to the human stonehenge, where the path of the sun aligns with the motif of their god. When the sun rises on March 15, it illuminates the face of Primus. It is a day associated with new beginnings and good will. Gifts are exchanged with loved ones, and those imprisoned for minor offenses can be freed if their petition is brought before the priests. However, web-weavers, who are mainly nocturnal hunters, view this holiday in a more melancholy manner. They spend it fortifying their underground citadels and making sacrifices to Primus in his war deity aspect for their protection. It is their Festival of the Battlements.

May 2nd: The festival of the coming of new sparks, or the festival of the heart-strings. The height of the mating season and the onset of the rainy season. Often associated with fertility rites, bonding ceremonies before familial ancestral altars, and feasts and revelry. Wine and mead flows. Dancing and music echo through the air all day and night. All look forward to new life.

July 19th: The festival of bounty. A feast day that celebrates the plentiful vegetation and prey from the season's warm rain showers. Pilgrimages are made to the site of Chela's burial, and offerings are left at statues of Onyx Prime the Deliverer.

September 28th: The festival of the battlements. The dry season is arriving, and the rains will slowly cease. Volcanic eruptions occur. Prey and vegetation may die. More emphasis is placed on the home. Priests ritually bless their respective tribes and honour any new warriors that have come of age. Individual families light incense or ritual fires inside their homes. In some tribes, such as the pious air-walkers, it is also customary to give something of oneself to their chosen deity; i.e., their musical instrument, their weapon, their ability to dance, their voice, etc., until the dry season has passed.

December 17th: The festival of the dark sun. The peak of the dry season and often the day of a solar eclipse. While this is a day associated with fear by those who depend on the sun for safety and sustenance, tribes like the scale-walkers and web-weavers venerate it. Amongst the web-weavers, for example, it is said that on this day, one can receive the most powerful visions and be able to summon ancestors from the afterlife. Indeed, many believe that their ancestors walk amongst them. Food and drink are left out for deceased loved ones. Unlike the web-weavers, however, scale-walkers are known to practise more baneful magic. Not stopping at necromancy, it is said that they enact blood rites to curse their enemies, calling upon the likes of Mortilus, Unicron, and the Fallen.

Other native rites :

The first song: A christening, of sorts. When infant Eukarians utter their first intelligible word, they are brought before their elders, or the leaders of their tribe. Several objects are placed before them (coloured stones, toys, weapons, food, etc.) and their reaction to each will determine what their name will be. In a word, naming the new generation is an honour reserved for the elders and leaders of a tribe, and not the parents of the child. That is why Blackarachnia's birth name was "Proprionica," as Venatrix believed they had an innocent look and they were drawn to the white night-blooming flowers placed before them. (Their mother, Amate, which means "to terrify," received her name by Venatrix, as well, because she kept snarling at the web-weaver elders and tried to bite anyone who grew too close.)

Coming-of-age: When a Eukarian reaches sexual maturity, they have become an adult. In order to celebrate this, they have the opportunity to put on a show of sorts for the tribe, of all the skills they have learned as an infant. Hunters demonstrate their catch; seers weave new prophecies; dancers dance; warriors spar, etc. During Blackarachnia's coming-of-age, they danced, and briefly possessed, spoke of a prophecy that echoed Venatrix's own: Cybertronians would come to the planet again. Chela would fall. A new age would begin. Amate pulled the young Proprionica aside and grew distraught, and violent. The next morning, they and Tarantulas fled to the Forbidden City, and left the planet on a space-ship they created.

The marking: When a Eukarian dies, it is sometimes customary for those closest to them to mark themself with a symbol that embodies their loved one. This is seen as a sort of bonding ritual. When the deceased returns to Eukaris during the festival of the dark sun, they can easily find the other again through that symbol.

Mom’s Art Day: June 2023

So I was supposed to go out for some art supplies today. But I had a botox session (for migraines) yesterday, meaning I really want/need to take it easy today. And The Brass Iris Studio, a super cool queer-owned tattoo shop, is hosting a Pride market today! They have these markets featuring work by all sorts of rad makers a few times a year, and I missed the last one because it was also on an art day, so right now my my husband and I are getting ready to bring our girls to check it out. I’m so excited!

After that, depending on how I feel and how strenuous these things turn out to actually be, I plan to:
