One thing that the confused response to Russians at War makes clear is that eight years after the revelation that Moscow attempted to influence a U.S. presidential election, most Westerners still don’t really know how Russian propaganda campaigns work. Americans have become familiar with AI botnets, salaried trolls tweeting in broken English about Texas secession, deranged Russian TV hosts calling for a nuclear strike on New York, and alt-right has-beens. But what to make of a French and Canadian documentary, tucked between Pharrell’s Lego-animated film and a Q&A with Zoe Saldaña, that seems cozy with the Russian military and blurs the line between entertainment and politics?
...
Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian propaganda has churned out absurd and repulsive lies, such as that Ukraine has biolabs where NATO scientists are working on a virus that targets Slavic DNA, and that Zelensky, who is Jewish, presides over a neo-Nazi regime. Yet, in a way, it has become honest with itself—at least for the domestic audience. There’s no longer a need for platforms like Russia.ru or The Journal, because the message is clear: This is who we are, and you’re either with us or against us. And yet, the entertainment aspect didn’t disappear.
...
One reason Russian propaganda is running circles around the West is that the internet was one of the few domains where the Russian state arrived late, forcing it to co-opt those who understood it. RuNet, the Russian segment of the World Wide Web, was created—and run—by people like Rykov: artsy 20-somethings, filled with cynicism, post-Soviet disillusionment, and a cyberpunk mentality. The collapse of the Soviet Union taught them that truth was whatever they wanted it to be, and that survival was the ultimate goal. The advertising executives, philosophy students, and creatives who once made video art, lewd calendars, and scandalous zines are the same minds who in 2016 said, “Let’s make memes about Hillary Clinton,” and in 2024 suggested using AI to flood X with believable comments. In many ways, this confrontation mirrors what’s happening in Ukraine: This time, however, the West is the massive, unwieldy force being outsmarted by a smaller, more tech-savvy adversary.
The good news is that the Kremlin is a graveyard of talent. In time, every gifted person I knew who went behind its brick walls was devoured by deceit, paranoia, and fear of losing one’s place in the sun. Konstantin Rykov was exceptional at his job, so much so that the Kremlin offered him a seat in the Russian Parliament when he was just 28. He accepted the offer. But being a member of the Duma Committee on Science and High Technologies and the Committee for Support in the Field of Electronic Media wasn’t the same as being the editor of fuck.ru. Despite being involved in some foreign influence operations, Rykov, now 45, hasn’t produced any significant work for Russian audiences since he joined Parliament.
Asked by an audience member in Toronto whether Russia was responsible for the war in Ukraine, Trofimova replied, “I think there are a lot of other factors involved. Yeah, like they are definitely sending troops in to solve whatever grievances there are.” Even if it wasn’t financed by Moscow, Russians at War reminds me of a Rykov production: slick, scandalous, and with a ton of free press. The message the film conveys is that war, not the country that started it, is bad in this scenario. Trofimova seems to portray Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the astonishing scale of the atrocities it has committed there, as something impersonal and inexorable, like a tsunami: We can only accept it and sympathize with the victims, including Russian soldiers.

Proton, the secure-minded email and productivity suite, is becoming a nonprofit foundation, but it doesn't want you to think about it in the way you think about other notable privacy and web foundations.
"We believe that if we want to bring about large-scale change, Proton can’t be billionaire-subsidized (like Signal), Google-subsidized (like Mozilla), government-subsidized (like Tor), donation-subsidized (like Wikipedia), or even speculation-subsidized (like the plethora of crypto “foundations”)," Proton CEO Andy Yen wrote in a blog post announcing the transition. "Instead, Proton must have a profitable and healthy business at its core."
The announcement comes exactly 10 years to the day after a crowdfunding campaign saw 10,000 people give more than $500,000 to launch Proton Mail. To make it happen, Yen, along with co-founder Jason Stockman and first employee Dingchao Lu, endowed the Proton Foundation with some of their shares. The Proton Foundation is now the primary shareholder of the business Proton, which Yen states will "make irrevocable our wish that Proton remains in perpetuity an organization that places people ahead of profits." Among other members of the Foundation's board is Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of HTML, HTTP, and almost everything else about the web.
Of particular importance is where Proton and the Proton Foundation are located: Switzerland. As Yen noted, Swiss foundations do not have shareholders and are instead obligated to act "in accordance with the purpose for which they were established." While the for-profit entity Proton AG can still do things like offer stock options to recruits and even raise its own capital on private markets, the Foundation serves as a backstop against moving too far from Proton's founding mission, Yen wrote.
There’s a lot more Proton to protect these days
Proton has gone from a single email offering to a wide range of services, many of which specifically target the often invasive offerings of other companies (read, mostly: Google). You can now take your cloud files, passwords, and calendars over to Proton and use its VPN services, most of which offer end-to-end encryption and open source core software hosted in Switzerland, with its notably strong privacy laws.
None of that guarantees that a Swiss court can't compel some forms of compliance from Proton, as happened in 2021. But compared to most service providers, Proton offers a far clearer and easier-to-grasp privacy model: It can't see your stuff, and it only makes money from subscriptions.

building an opensource collection of 'net services
hi there! im mia :) im a computer nerd with too much time on her hands.
im making this post to bring a project of mine into the world; a fully opensource and collaborative collection of online tools. this will grow over time, but for now, there is one thing active and two planned. (read on below)
CalicoDrive
a nextcloud instance! currently offering a bunch of very useful things:
50GB of free cloud storage
a Markdown notetaking tool
a shareable, open calendar
a photo gallery
web bookmark storage, and
some organisation and collaboration tools.
many of the cloud storage services we rely on are corporate, and require exorbitantly priced subscriptions. alongside that, data on them is often subject to a huge array of impenetrable terms/conditions.
what makes this different? firstly, your data is controlled by you. it is entirely encrypted on disk and can only be decrypted with your selected password. you own the data the same way you would were it on an external hard drive or flashstick.
secondly- its free! while you can pay 20$ once off or 5$ a month to upgrade storage quota and support the project, the core of it is entirely and utterly free to use.
matrix.calicocore
(full disclaimer- this service isn't online yet. it's planned to be active within the next month at the very maximum, very likely sooner.)
what's matrix? i am absolutely sure you've heard of IRC- internet relay chat. im also sure you've heard of discord.
matrix is a modern federated chat protocol- if you took the best of IRC, and you took the best of Discord, and combined them into an opensource and *free* protocol for real-time messaging? that's matrix, baby!
matrix functions similarly to the fediverse (more on that later). when you sign up, you select a homeserver, which is the infrastructure your account is hosted on. your homeserver determines who you're federated with, your most easily accessible spaces, and the little tag at the end of your name.
so what's matrix.calicocore going to be? a homeserver! the idea here is to bring communication and community into our hands, and away from the hands of big tech corporations who really don't care about us. it'll be federated with other spaces and servers, and run collectively.
fedi.calicocore
if you've ever used mastodon, fedi.calicocore will be a server compatible with it. this is still in the very very early stages as a project, so i cant detail much, but stay tuned.
things to note, disclaimers, etc
this project is in its early days. i cant guarantee perfect stability, though it has been tested and run for a few days already. please don't expect a perfect replacement for existing services YET.
secondly, in regards to calicodrive; your data is fully encrypted in two ways, both within the nextcloud instance and on the physical spinning rust. this means if you majorly forget your password, there's a possibility of losing it- but that trade-off is worth it for the security.
this all sounds great! how can i sign up?
for now, this is the link to the nextcloud:
https://drive.calicocore.space
in the very near future, there'll be a central discussion space on the matrix, too, which you're encouraged to introduce yourself on!
lastly:
who is this for?
these services and tools are made by a disabled trans woman. they will prioritise people vulnerable on the current internet, and focus on building a safe space for trans, non-binary, and queer people; as well as disabled people and people of colour.
you can sign up if you are not one of these, however you will be expected to defer to the marginalised members and be generally respectful of the purpose of the space!

2023 Updates & Changes
Tumblr media
The DA Poly Website has been fully updated for 2023, and boy were there a lot of updates to be made. Please read through the changes below the cut and let us know if you have any questions. Also don't forget:
Nominations open in just over a month!
Changes
Communications
After a lot of thought and consideration, we've decided to shut down the exchange twitter. We're sorry for those of you who use that as your main source of news, but the platform has become openly hostile to small projects and creators and it's going to be impossible for us to post there and ensure you actually see our updates. Instead, you can follow our announcements in the following ways:
Our Website We have added a blog to our website which will have an archive of all of our posts from today onward. You can follow the blog in your RSS reader of choice! (Have no idea what RSS is? I highly recommend the in depth blog RSS for Post-Twitter News and Web Monitoring, but you can also find a more bite-sized intro on mod enigmalea's website here.)
Tumblr Our tumblr will continue to host announcements and information about the exchange and will continue to host Poly Sharing (the new name for the former DA Polyshipping Day/Week).
Mod enigmalea's Mastodon If you're on Mastodon, enigmalea will be posting updates there. If you'd rather not follow them directly, you can also follow the dragon age chirp.social and gup.pe groups and see the updates that way!
The Hanged Man Dreamwidth & The Hanged Man Pillowfort If you have an account on Dreamwidth or Pillowfort, we'll be sharing updates in The Hanged Man communities on those sites!
Fandom Calendar Dreamwidth We will be posting a schedule and reminder for each stage of the exchange on Fandom Calendar!
General
Polyshipping Week info was renamed to "Poly Sharing" and updated to reflect that we reblog DA poly content at any time!
Collections for the exchange will remain open at all times for additional treats. If you have a prompt you still want to write from any previous years, feel free to do so!
Website has been updated with all new info. The tumblr pinned post has all updated info, as well.
The AO3 collection now features a short version of the FAQ to save space. Please refer to the website for the in depth FAQ.
The countdown was removed from the tumblr layout. The website homepage still has a countdown!
The website was updated to show all deadlines in your local time.
Rules Updates
The rules have been updated to clarify that previously posted works cannot be added to the collection. An exception to this might be a transformational work of a work already in the collection (for example, if someone makes a podfic for a fic in the collection and doesn’t add it to the collection initially, it could be added later.)
The rules were also clarified to disallow works which are entirely AI generated. Our Exchange Info gives a more detailed explanation of what we mean.
Nominations
There have been no changes to nominations.
Sign-Ups
Sign-Ups require a minimum of 3 ships for requests and offers instead of one. We've received sign-ups with very limited requests and offers lately which makes producing a match very difficult.
Sign-Ups now allow for up a maximum of 60 ships requested and an unlimited number of ships offered. Please see Tutorials - How to Sign-Up for more details.
Your requests cannot consist of entirely ships which use a DNW to limit your creator to creating for only your OC. For at least one of the three ships you request you should be open to receiving any OC (generic, one created specifically for your gift, or your gifter's OC) or should be a ship which has no original characters. Creating for other people's OCs is complex and is not something that everyone is able or willing to tackle within the context of an exchange, so participants should be willing to be flexible for at least one request.
If you are requesting art of your OC we ask that you have more than one reference for both face and body. Otherwise, artists may have a difficult time filling your request.
Other Exchange Stuff
Last, but certainly not least, the mods will be posting a separate Treatless list this year. The link has not been added anywhere yet, but will be shortly after sign-ups close!

How to start blogging topic:- how to cancel
Starting a blog is a rewarding endeavor that allows you to express yourself, share your expertise, and potentially even earn income. Whether you're passionate about a specific topic, want to document your journey, or simply love writing, blogging offers a platform to connect with like-minded individuals and make an impact. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to start blogging:
1. Define Your Purpose: Before diving into the world of blogging, take some time to clarify your purpose. Ask yourself why you want to start a blog and what you hope to achieve with it. Are you looking to share your knowledge, inspire others, or build a personal brand? Understanding your motivation will help guide your blogging journey.
2. Choose Your Niche: Selecting a niche is crucial for attracting a targeted audience. Consider your interests, expertise, and the needs of your potential readers. Focus on a specific topic or niche that you're passionate about and have knowledge in. This could be anything from travel and food to fitness and personal finance.
3. Pick a Blogging Platform: There are several blogging platforms to choose from, each with its own set of features and benefits. Some popular options include WordPress, Blogger, Medium, and Wix. WordPress.org is highly recommended for its flexibility, customization options, and scalability.
4. Secure a Domain Name: Your domain name is your blog's unique address on the internet. Choose a domain name that reflects your brand, is easy to remember, and aligns with your niche. You can purchase a domain name through domain registrars like GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Bluehost.
5. Set Up Web Hosting: If you choose a self-hosted platform like WordPress.org, you'll need to find a reliable web hosting provider. Look for hosting companies that offer good performance, uptime, security, and customer support. Some popular options include Bluehost, SiteGround, and HostGator.
6. Design Your Blog: Select a visually appealing theme or template for your blog. Choose a design that reflects your brand personality and is easy to navigate. Customize the layout, colors, fonts, and other elements to create a unique look and feel for your blog.
7. Create Compelling Content: Content is the heart of any successful blog. Start by brainstorming topics that resonate with your target audience. Write high-quality, engaging, and informative posts that provide value to your readers. Incorporate multimedia elements like images, videos, and infographics to make your content more engaging.
8. Develop a Content Strategy: Plan your content strategy by creating an editorial calendar. Decide on the frequency of your posts, types of content you'll create, and topics you'll cover. Consistency is key to building an audience and keeping them engaged.
9. Optimize for SEO: Search engine optimization (SEO) is essential for improving your blog's visibility in search engine results. Conduct keyword research to identify relevant keywords and phrases related to your niche. Optimize your blog posts for SEO by including keywords in your titles, headings, meta descriptions, and content.
10. Promote Your Blog: Once you've published your blog posts, it's time to promote them to your target audience. Share your posts on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Engage with your audience, participate in online communities, and collaborate with other bloggers to expand your reach.
11. Build an Email List: Start building an email list from the get-go. Offer a lead magnet or incentive in exchange for visitors' email addresses. Use email marketing tools like Mailchimp or ConvertKit to create and send newsletters, updates, and promotions to your subscribers.

Blogging and digital learning
Blogging refers to writing, photography, and other media that's self-published online. Blogging started as an opportunity for individuals to write diary-style entries, but it has since been incorporated into websites for many businesses. The hallmarks of blogging include frequent updates, informal language, and opportunities for readers to engage and start a conversation.
What Is Blogging?
The word blog is actually a shortened form of its original name, "weblog." These weblogs allowed early internet users to "log" the details of their day in diary-style entries. Blogs often allow readers to comment, so as they became more common, communities sprung up around popular blogs.
If you want to create your online presence and share content you are passionate about, blogging can be a lucrative career choice. In this article, we answer, “What is blogging?”, explore its advantages, understand how you can start blogging and make money from it and share some tips for running a successful blog.
How Blogging Works
Blogging is as simple as obtaining a website and publishing original content on it. Tech-savvy bloggers can buy a domain name and build the website themselves. Those with less HTML knowledge can create an account with sites like WordPress that simplify the web design and publishing process.
Blogs are usually simple websites. Older pieces may be archived in separate sections of the site, and there may be a separate page with contact info or a bio, but the blog itself is usually just a single page that can be scrolled through—similar to the news feed on social media sites like Facebook. As with a Facebook news feed, a blog displays the newest content at the top of the page.
Pros and Cons of Blogging
Pros
Good for SEO
Maintains communication with customers
Builds rapport with customers
Generate alternate income
Cons
Time-consuming
Constantly requires fresh ideas
Payoff is delayed
Blogging in and of itself won't generate income
Requirements for a Blog
The good news is that starting a blog or adding a blog to your existing site is relativity easy and affordable. All you have to do is follow these four steps.
Set Up the Blog
There are free blog options such as WordPress and Blogger, but to retain control and a professional image, consider investing in a domain name and a hosting service. You can install WordPress or another content management system on your host if you don't want to create the whole site from scratch.
Add Content
Once your blog is up and running, you need to keep it active with new content to grow your business. Develop a set schedule for writing and posting blog articles. Create a content calendar so you always know what you're going to post.
Market
Like all other business ideas, your success comes from marketing and getting your message in front of your target market. Great ways to reach your market are through social media apps, email lists, and by reaching out to other bloggers, podcasters, and media outlets for publicity. Repurpose your blog content to promote your business across platforms, such as by using quotes on your Twitter or Instagram profiles, or by creating a video of your article to share on YouTube.
Add Income Streams
While your blog can complement an existing business, it's also a great way to add additional income streams to your home business. You can promote other companies' products and services in affiliate marketing. You can advertise or feed ad networks, such as AdSense, on to your blog. If you have a service business you're promoting with your blog, you can create your own information products to complement it. Or, if you have your own product, you can offer a service.
