Weekend (2011)

Queer indie dramas are an entire subgenre, and I am OBSESSED!!! I just wanted to shoutout some of my favorites real quick.
(Warning: These films will rip your heart out and then put it back together again.)
Tumblr media
God’s Own Country (2017)
This film takes place in the Yorkshire countryside and is basically Brokeback Mountain with a happy ending. It is nitty-gritty and rough around the edges and kind of hard to watch at parts, but there’s so much tenderness woven throughout. Francis Lee did an outstanding job, especially considering this was his first film. Plus, it has a cutie baby Josh O’Connor in it 🥰
Tumblr media
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
This film is about a painter who is hired to do the wedding portrait of a young woman who is engaged to be married to a nobleman. She refuses to sit for the portrait, so it must be done without her knowledge. Marianne poses as her companion so she can study her features for the portrait, but an intense emotional connection forms. It’s a very artsy very French film, but it’s so beautiful and emotional and the intimacy and care between Marianne and Heloise melts my heart 🥺 I also love the friendship they have with the young maid, Sophie.
Tumblr media
Weekend (2011)
This film takes place over the course of a weekend as two men have a Friday night hookup but then start talking the following morning and realize that maybe there’s something there. They’re at different places in their coming-out journey, but they spend the entire weekend together in a little bubble, talking and getting to know one another. And then as the weekend comes to a close, they realize that they’re starting to genuinely fall in love. It’s a quiet, introspective film and it brings up some really important conversations around sexuality as well.
Tumblr media
Boys/Jongens (2014)
I always call this film Dutch Heartstopper and I watched it on repeat in the days leading up to Heartstopper’s release. The plotting is very similar, although the tone is quite different. Two boys meet when they are on the same relay team at school. One is a year older and more confident in his sexuality and the younger is still struggling to figure himself out but knows that he is irresistibly attracted to his new best friend. This film has butterflies and first kisses and first love, and I will always recommend it to fans of Heartstopper!

An Ode to my comfort movies
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have two comfort movies that I watch no more than once a year, for fear of consuming them in my mind, and they are Weekend by Andrew Haigh and God's Own Country by Francis Lee. They mean a lot to me, because they're universal in representing the burning desire for human closeness. They're not just universal: for me, these are the two movies that better than any other have managed to synthesize such a vast and profound concept. I search all the time for movies and stories capable of touching every chord of tenderness within me. Abandonment and human closeness are concepts that seem to exclude each other, but are complementary: I do nothing but vivisect them, when I write.
In my humble attempt to pay homage to such concepts (and therefore these two movies), I self-published a little story for italian readers two days ago, on the first day of spring. It has nothing to do with these movies and it has a lot to do with them. Inspiration is such a blessed thing.
I specifically owe a lot to Andrew Haigh, as a director and writer, because he entrusts writing with the task of making his characters re/live. It's not as obvious as I make it seem. You should watch Weekend and All Of Us Strangers to understand what I'm talking about: you feel the care for his characters, as if they were real. Again, it's not as trivial as it sounds. Maybe what I mean is that I feel cared for, when I watch them.
The story I wrote it's about someone who probably, in my knowledge, never got to experience care as in human closeness. I won't elaborate, but it's something that has always broken my fucking heart.
Andrew Haigh also has what I consider the greatest talent of all: he brings to life male characters that feel like they were written by women. Oh my God, it's such an absolute pleasure to experience male protagonists who are built to be so open in considering others, in listening, in choosing the right word to say.
Yes, both these movies focus on male homosexual relationships, the point is also the fact that they have the ability to heal certain concepts about men, for me as a woman.
Those couple of days in a year when I feel the need to be restored in tenderness and faith, that's what these two movies do for me.

there’s this gay film from 2011 called weekend. It’s great you should watch it.
I must have seen it about a decade ago and I barely remember it now but I remember that one of the characters is obsessed with hearing people’s coming out stories.
it turns out he likes hearing them bc he never got to come out to his parents (I thought they were dead but I re-watched the scene and I think he was just adopted).
I think about that sometimes.
My mum is and always has been very queer-friendly progressive and it’s never been a problem that I’m queer.
Coming out as a man, trying to figure out who I am as a man... I don’t know. it isn’t difficult, exactly? I don’t really care about what’s expected of me and I know so many men who are and aren’t masculine in various different ways.
But I want to know who I could’ve been. I saw an old photo of my dad, he looked younger than I am now, wearing a dangly earring. My mum doesn’t remember him having pierced ears. He must have let it close up. I want so badly to ask him about it.

I do realise I'm very late saying this but isn't Matty's favourite queer movie basically the story of him and Ross?

Honestly, Weekend (2011) remains one of the most romantic gay films of all time, and the fact that I so rarely see it on recommended lists is a travesty.

memories- hisoka x reader
Summary: Hisoka’s an enigma. Not many people know about his past- and you’re not too sure if he even chooses to remember it. But, you want to know more about him, you want to learn his insides and outs, as if he's the back of your hand. There is a lot to learn, and you want to know everything.

----------------
"I wanna know more about you."
You two sat criss-cross-apple-sauce opposite of each other on your shared bed, cigarette smoke puffing from your lips as all the windows were open.
It was a risky question to ask, that's for damn sure. But being stoned made the question roll right off your tongue, and well, Hisoka was pretty high as well.
"What else is there to know? You know me better than I know myself." He takes the cigarette out of your hands and takes it into his own mouth.
You roll your eyes at his question. "I don't know like anything about you.. All I know is how much you love bubble gum."
A puff of smoke rolled over his top lip as he spoke, "Ah yes, Bungee Gum. I could really use some right now. ♠" as fast as the sparkle in his eyes appeared, it disappeared as a frown tugged at his lips from the mention of his favorite brand going bankrupt.
"Sooo.. Tell me at least something!"
"Well, there's a lot to unpack with that question."
Watching Hisoka puff another cloud out of his mouth made you all giddy, even if you didn't know much about him, his appearance could almost make up for the lack of knowledge.
"Well, start somewhere.. Anywhere."
Hisoka taps the cigarette on the ash tray, and grinds it to mush, lightly coughing when some ash enters his nostrils. "Hm, let's see. A while ago I was disqualified from the first Hunter Exam I took as I almost killed a judge-"
"Woah, really? The Hisoka Morrow disqualified?" you interrupt him," what happened??"
He lights a new cigarette with a few flicks to the lighter, "He was a poor excuse of an examiner. I didn't approve of his skills."
Hisoka passes you the cigarette while blowing out a ring of smoke. It always impressed you how weirdly talented he was at smoke tricks.
"Crazy. Well, good on you if he was a bad examiner."
He chuckles softly, "In the next year's hunter exam, the examiner came back for blood. Unfortunately, he wasn't nearly as exciting as I thought he would be." he let's out a dramatic sigh.
"Disappointing," he hums in agreement.
You light up with a new question to ask, "Tell me something about your childhood.. Like how you found Bungee Gum or something!"
He jerks his head up and chuckles, "Feeling bold, are we?"
You pucker your lips and put a cigarette to them. "Maybe.. -"
The pale moonlight casts shadows upon your face, your eyes sparkling with an ethereal glow. Your doe like features and glossy lips has Hisoka intoxicated. He wouldn't say he's in love- he can't be. But you're the reason he doesn't disappear for months on end like he used to.
You break him out of his trance by moving your hands in his face, "Come onnn, tell me at least something about it."
"Hm, what do I get in return? ♦"
"A hug.? Or a kiss.. Whatever you prefer."
"Mm, I'll take the kiss." he says while slurring the the 'mm'. "When I was a child, my family was very poor, we couldn't afford Bungee Gum often. And when I did manage to get my hands on it, I would chew a singular piece of gum until it got very rubbery and would lose all its flavor."
"Oh.. That's sad.. I'm sorry.." you say, not knowing how to respond.
He blows off your sympathy, "Now.. Where's that kiss?  ♥ "
You roll your eyes at him, "Fine.." you get on your knees and grab his head tightly, smushing your face against his. You leave his lips with a 'mwah' and sit back down.
"Happy?" you say teasingly.
"Very." he says, licking his lips.
You let out a big puff of smoke right in Hisoka's face while you giggle. He huffs and inhales all the fresh piney grey fumes, finishing with a sigh.
"You were in a circus, right? I think I remember you mentioning a circus once or twice.."
"Oh! So you do know more than you let on.." he snickers.
"Whoops."
"But to answer your question, I was. I joined the circus when I was around.. Seven. The ringleader scouted me out, realizing how talented I was, he invited me into the circus. I developed my nen around that time, as well. ♦ "
"Wow, you must've been a realll talented child prodigy." you say sarcastically.
"I was. ♥ " you roll your eyes at his response. "Now.. Let's hear some of your own stories."
You tap the cigarette ash off on the ash tray, bringing it back to your mouth. "There's a ton I could talk about." you smile.
"We have all night, don't we?"
