Anime Expo pics!

I ‘successfully’ made it to Anime Expo.  I had no travel issues going to LA and even had a day to visit the Getty (note, the building is super cool - the art is meh).  Much delicious food was had and I bravely cosplayed on Day 2/Saturday of the con.  All in all, the cosplay held up very well and was comfortable despite having to wait outside and stand in the famous lines of AX.  Thankfully, most of them were in the shade but I did stand a bit in the sun and it was not roasting.  Hoping to get some easy pics on the set in the Entertainment Hall, I still had to wait 30 minutes for a chance to pose - after 9pm!  This con is bonkers crowded man.  I would have preferred to have gone to Anime Central but my moving schedule prevented it.  I’m thinking ACen or Katsucon next year already.

This is me trying to look thoughtful.  I had the wrong color and size of fan since I’d packed the white one in my moving boxes by accident - along with the hairpin.  I used a post it note taped around a pencil as my hairpin hack and just used the green fan to have a fan.

Here is a nice full shot of the outfit.  I am very picky about shoes and walking around a con so I just wore plain black boots which were what I wanted.

The different layers were quite comfortable and I’m glad I used the cotton for the white/red layers.  Here, I’m still miffed about the wrong color fan so I’m trying to look serious or something with it closed.

Of course, I still had to pose with it open - maybe if I’m really dedicated I’ll try to photoshop it.  Gotta look all sly and mysterious . . .

When I checked my mailbox today I found this - oh the irony!  You were supposed to be delivered before I left!

It isn’t an exact match but I’ll have to cosplay this at least one more time with better accessories!  It turned out that I put on the cosplay before 8am, and wore it until almost 10pm!  Thus, I died after all of the nerdy things I partook in all day.  Turns out I put in ~16,565 steps that day.  The wig also held up decently with my friend’s constant assistance when I had to put my bag on and off. 

I really like messenger bags for crowds but, it was hard to put over the long haired wig.  Going to the bathroom wasn’t difficult but tedious - I did not wear pants underneath for two reasons: 1.) it was hot outside 2.) shorts are much easier to work with than a regular pair of pants under all those layers.

I was also excited the the first person I spotted that day was Ah Xu!  I’m so short ;_;

As far as I could tell, we were the only WOH cosplayers - unless someone else was hiding in the massive crowds (totally possible).  I saw tons of Hualian and the MXTX cosplayers were huge.  TGCF first, MDZS second, SVSSS third.  I was happy to find a Liu Mingyan on Friday in the artists alley and we were excited to be SVSSS fans.  I also found one Ranwan couple with great details - the matching red stone necklaces, and whips in red and gold. . . .  but that was it.  Maybe after the 2ha novel comes out in the fall, cons will have more 2ha cosplayers in the future.  I know my next one is SQQ, but other series should have cosplayers as well.  SPL would be great with Gu Mang and his single eyeglass or Yuwu.

Color me surprised, because in the end I enjoyed the A Tale of Thousand Stars segment of these final two eps a lot more than the Bad Buddy one. And if you know me you know that’s a weird place for me to land, as I have always been a BB girlie but relatively mild on ATOTS.

My opinion of episode 3 stands - it was an underwhelming resolution to Pat and Pran’s story in this special and did not live up to all the things they set up in the first half. Their final scenes in today’s episode were very fun and definitely fulfilled my fluff needs, but it didn’t feel earned to see them suddenly so happy and content when we didn’t get them properly working through any of the things that were causing their issues in this time period. It feels like their story got narrative short shrift in favor of TRIPLE LOST IN THE FOREST plot and I’ll never be convinced it was the right thing to do.

The Phupha/Tian stuff, though? THAT is what a proper resolution looks like. We saw Phupha recognize something wasn’t working in his approach to his relationship, and then actually make a change. He clearly learned something from Pat and Pran and was much more open with his affection toward Tian after their departure. And then surprising him in Bangkok! I have to give props to Phupha here for realizing he had pushed Tian to his limit and it was time to bend, and quickly taking action (something we did not get to see Pran do despite his realizations).

I loved seeing the play (I guess Engineering and Architecture did it together in the end) and the choice to have Pat play Tian and Pran play Phupha. And watching Phupha watch the play was An Experience. Especially reflecting on @wen-kexing-apologist’s post yesterday about his internalized homophobia and struggles with openly acknowledging his love, it was nice to see him enjoying having his love story on display like that. And then of course he comes through in the end, finally meets Tian’s parents properly and expresses the ultimate form of commitment to Tian. It was really beautiful and such a lovely ending for this special.

And I can’t overlook the sheer volume of Phupha/Tian intimacy in this final ep. @bengiyo Aof has seen and registered our complaints about the restrained intimacy in ATOTS and decided to make up for it all at once. I, for one, was delighted to receive. This is the most I’ve ever been into them (I recognize it’s likely because they were basically cosplaying as Pat and Pran in much of this episode, what can I say I like what I like).

Overall I really enjoyed this crossover. Everyone was clearly having fun and they got to dig into a lot of interesting dynamics. It was delightful to revisit these characters and settings. The weakness of some of the ep 3 content keeps it from being as great as it could have been, but it was a fun romp and in the end and I’m glad we got it.

I saw sandman cosplay at con this weekend which delights me, but I also saw a (lone😔) Wen Kexing whom I only spotted because my friend went, and I quote: "oh look an elf!" and I looked and immediately went "that's WEN KEXING!!" to which she went: "so...not an elf?" 😂

Anime Expo sooon!

As I stated previously, my next SQQ project has been on hold since I recently moved over 1,100 miles to start a new job.  Moving sucks - the vast majority of my things are currently in the process of being moved and or stored and then delivered; so. . . . . I’m sitting in a mainly empty apartment.  Yay - sort of.  Apparently, b/c I’m in an apartment complex that can’t be easily approached they have to charge me extra to deliver my things and they’ll charge me for the stairs to my place as well.  Thank goodness my new job is paying for it but still - I’m in this weird window of your stuff may be delivered between X date in June to X date in July within 30 days.  Um - yay.

The good news is that I was neurotic enough to toss my Wen Kexing cosplay in my suitcase that got shoved in my car.  Thus, I have the entire outfit, wig, and my plain black boots (I know not matching, but I need comfy shoes for a con).  However, I did not pack the fan and hairpin so, I’m currently hoping Amazon can deliver me a replacement fan by tomorrow!  You have no idea how much swearing occurred when I found a fan for my future SQQ in the suitcase and not the white one for WKX. I really don’t have a way to whip up the hairpin quickly so I’ll just have to do without -_- unless I can find one in the artist’s alley on day one.  Or I steal some label tape from work and make a paper one reinforced with a pencil or something  . . . ‘cause I got pretty much nothing in my place at the moment.  The label tape is a pretty good dupe for the color of the hairpin. . . .

There is no danmei cosplay meet up. Therefore, I’m gonna crash the MXTX one!  I have to admit I’m both excited and nervous to be around so many people.  It is apparently on July 2nd from 4:00pm to 5:30pm at site 7.  I’ve never been to AX so sure . . . outside meet up spots or something.

I didn’t include this in my original post because, again, I was focusing on book (and MTKay’s) Wen Kexing that doesn’t have a fan. But it’s a cool shot and after stewing on it for a while, I think this is probably what a hybrid of book and show Lao Wen would look like. So out into the world it goes. May Gong Jun grant me his cheekbones in the future for other photoshoots if it comes down to that.

Im really into this cosplay video. Like after a long time living on the snowy mountain, Wenzhou decided to go visit the human world. At that time, no one knows about them. Just the two of them walking, enjoy the moment together. Its so heart-warming.

Don't imagine a young Wen Kexing sneaking out of the Valley and returning with armfuls of stolen books. Don't imagine him hiding somewhere and reading them and then turning them to convoluted bedtime stories for Gu Xiang. Definitely don't imagine him coming across a collection of love poems and discovering how much he actually likes poetry for its own merit.

Or some years down the line when he's murdered his way to the top and he starts putting together his revenge plan, and with that his "Philanthropist Wen" persona. And suddenly books are not just a clandestine escape but a necessity because he will need to convincingly pass as a member of a sect. So don't imagine him narrowing down his reading to as many relevant texts as he can find and don't imagine him asking Beauty Ghost (because who else can he ask?) about the sects and they work and most importantly how people behave in them.

And how would his -by necessity- selective reading, combined with Liu Qianqiao's somewhat skewed account and his own tattered memories of Before affect the final image of "Philanthropist Wen"? Would he have sat with A-Xiang and practice scenarios and looks until he got it just right? Would he have taken small trips in nearby cities to see how well his disguise holds up?

How much of his insistence to call himself a scholar is him self-projecting and how much is it deliberate so he can get away with quoting texts because, at least at the beginning, it would have been a legitimate concern that any extended conversation might have poked huge holes in his backstory.

And the thing is, he is good at playing the flirty scholar. In another life that might have truly been him. He enjoys the thrill of the back-and-forth in a conversation, he relishes in the positive attention he receives and he legitimately loves talking about poetry (no one accidentally acquires encyclopaedic knowledge of love poems they can much to the occasion). So yes, it is a mask, but it is one he likes to wear and wear often.

Enter stage left Zhou Zishu who is not impressed by his quoting and flirting, who sees through his mask(s) almost immediately and will both call him out on it and let him get away with it, and who values honesty in relationships (and who can blame him). It is intriguing. It is infuriating and entertaining at the same time because Wen Kexing hadn't had much failure in his routine since he perfected it. It's probably utterly terrifying and he can't get enough. And the warmth he feels the first time he gets Zhou Zishu to smile and blush with a poem was definitely worth all the eyerolls he received before and after.
