You said in one of your youtube videos I think that the aa anime had your favorite characterization and I was wondering if you'd like to elaborate on that a bit more? I haven't watched it yet kother than the bloopers video lol) and I'm just curious as to what it does differently than the games

it is true to the games in every regard, but it has extra time to add character flourish that the games cannot.

just some examples: maya moves around erratically in every space she's in, the foley work is amazing so you can hear her wooden sandals on the ground and the clink of her beads hitting themselves. she barrels through crime scenes, accidentally smacks phoenix all the time because she isn't paying attention to what she's doing, and just has room to be more 'maya-like' because she's in an animated space and not stuck in a VN with mostly-static screens.

phoenix's internal monologue is replaced by long, lingering shots of him silently studying evidence as he finds it. moments where he connects everything come as instant revelations and you are left on the edge of your seat waiting to hear what he will say, rather than having to piece it together yourself. his character is incredibly pronounced in the anime especially--the core tenet of him is 'faith' and this is shown wonderfully time and time again.

(see, the scene in episode 2 where maya says she doesn't want him defending her, so he bikes in the rain all day to the office of every single defense attorney in the county begging for their help. the flashback scene in episode 13 where larry is insisting that miles has abandoned them and is about to crush miles' keychain under his foot, and phoenix dives for it and lets larry smash his fingers instead.)

miles in game is described as being sad-looking and watery-eyed, always kind of holding pain in his body and expression. you get to see that in the anime, instead of just having it told to you, and it does an amazing job at softening his character and endearing him to you in an instant

the anime supplements tons to established relationships. i talked in that video about how i love what it does to the prosecutor family, it shows you miles as a teenage boy and surrounds him in imagery (flower language, the clothes he wears, wide shots of him stuck at a fork in the road) that tells you he does not know what to do or who to be. and it shows you how the von karmas take care of him, and how it is miles' choice to be a prosecutor.

in the anime, franziska never has her 'miles was like a little brother to me' line because the anime shows you instead of telling you.

the anime offers insight into manfred von karma's thoughts on miles, which are notably remorseful and kind. it offers flashbacks to a time when franziska was protective and loving toward miles, doing everything in her power to pull him out of his trauma-induced depression and help him process grief.

the AA anime loves using symbolic storytelling. flower language is a big one, light is another. light is constantly used to convey truth, enlightenment, joy. this shot where franziska is literally in miles shadow as her father begins the process of choosing him over her, but she smiles with her whole face because she finally got him to smile for the first time since they've met, is literally a fucking masterpiece to me. i could write my dissertation on this scene alone.

the anime shows us everything we do not get in the games, all the little things we wish we could be privy to. it shows us mia giving maya the best day she possibly can, before asking maya--with the full expectation that maya may say no--if she would be willing to head the fey clan.

the anime gives us the progression of miego's relationship, literally SHOWS them falling in love

the anime gives us the fucking hospital scene that everyone is insane about!

and, of course, the anime gives us the little tiny baby signal trio, all running around and playing pretend as their favourite toku heroes.

these keychains that larry wins the three of them are a thruline throughout the whole show. phoenix keeps his on his briefcase, exposed to the world just like his heart, its paint chipping from years of love.

miles keeps his hidden away, close to his chest, pristine after all those years. even as the demon prosecutor, he never gets rid of it. even when he chooses death, he takes the memory of his two best friends with him.

the ace attorney anime is a fucking masterpiece. it takes these pre-established characters and breathes new life into them without losing sight of their original intention. every choice it makes is beautiful, rich with depth and nuance and love. it is genuinely no wonder the fandom hates it so much, which how much it clashes with their often black-and-white views of these characters who were never intended to be that way.

obviously, as a new medium, it does have to make some changes to adapt properly. but i have decided i am no longer speaking any problems i have with those changes, because i am sick to bastard death of negativity on all sides of me and would rather just publicly profess my love to this anime forever.

Do you mind if I ask more about this? I’ve also participated in sicktember (casually) and I haven’t really noticed anything that fit this, so I just wanted to ask more about your experiences if you were comfortable elaborating. I’m mostly curious what changes were made that made the event less fun (other than delay in prompts released I heard about that)

yeah sure! right off the bat i wanna say that this is not something i was like. PISSED OFF or intending to start any drama about, just some stuff that made the event less enjoyable for me.

i also wanna say that you haven't noticed it because sicktember is very very careful to not publish anything that makes them look bad. they do not engage with any of their replies or asks unless they can spin it in a very sanitized, pr-friendly manner. try creeping through the tags and replies on some of their posts, and while a lot of shit is deleted or lost, you can still see traces of it, some of which i will link to here.

the prompts becoming more delayed. i wasn't here in 2021 (when they dropped in early march), but in 2022 they dropped in mid may. that was awesome because it gave us all lots of time to prep--my favourite thing about sicktember is how accessible of a prompt event it is! the prompts don't all drop like a week before the event starts, you have all summer to write so if you have a full time job or responsibilities you can still participate. this year they made it very clear the prompts were ready to go in may but didn't drop them until mid-june.

when people started sending asks about this, they responded thusly. they maintain this weird kinda... pr-friendly, stepford smiley vibe whenever anyone tries to open a dialogue with them? and it just comes across as so dismissive of anyone trying to make genuine points.

here they say that "many things go into planning prompts" but don't elaborate on that at all. for context, the night before this ask, they had made it clear that the prompts were all ready to go. the hand-waving comes in the form of all the "suggestions" they offer here--"well, you don't have to do every prompt!" (but i want to. it's fun. it feels good. and that's what i've done in the past) "you can write after september!" (i did that last year. it was kind of miserable. i like posting with everyone, it feels like a big celebration!) "we give you like 100 days!" (that's cool. but you could give us more at no detriment to yourself. a lot of us didn't make the deadline last year.)

check the notes on this post and you'll see several disappointed contributors/fans who are trying to open a dialogue with the event runners, all of whom were ignored. several people have reached out to me saying that their asks about this were ignored.

2. last year, they said they would only be accepting fills on the sicktember blog through submissions, and only posting 10 random ones a day. in the past, sicktember has reblogged every single fill directly from the writers.

here's why this is shitty:

when you submit something to a blog, the blog owner then becomes the one who effectively "owns" its engagement. that means any notes, reblogs, comments, follows, etc. all go to sicktember. they do not go to the person who MADE THE STORY. if you, the author, want to see what people are saying about your work, you have to pull up the sicktember window and obsessively check it. if you want to respond to any comments, you give sicktember more notes.

this is just more work, especially if you still want those notes. you would then have to make TWO posts, one on your personal blog and one on sicktember's. and people are probably disinclined to reblog a story twice. it is not exposure or engagement to do this, it actively robs authors of engagement.

sicktember might not even post your fill. they pick ten random ones a day. this is because...

they literally admitted that they lose followers when they reblog every fill. they said aloud that it is all about engagement for them. maintaining followers means more to them than highlighting the contributions of all the people who are making their event what it is. they are quite literally trying to maximize followers and stealing engagement from their contributors. it's kind of fucking insidious.

the only valid point here is the thing about reducing mod workload. still, they could've just... opened apps for another mod? inquired for some extra help? lord knows i would've jumped at the opportunity to curate! i'm sure others would've too.

contrast this to whumptober, who religiously reblog every single fill despite being a much longer running event than sicktember.

this is why i started @sicktemberfeed. with permission, but the mods were even weird about THAT... i asked if it would be ok to make, and they said "well, it's not like we could stop you." weird fucking answer. it's fine to say no.

3. i didn't speak out about point 2, but did speak out a little bit on this blog about point 1. @yes-i-am-happyaspie's husband (@spaceninjas42) dug through my blog, somehow found my untagged critique (it was not vitriolic or cruel, just a plea for an open discussion) and started getting on my case for talking about it on my personal blog. there was a second, much more vitriolic reply that he left but i was a dingus and blocked him as soon as i saw it, which means it's now marked deleted and i have no way of getting it back or proving it. that's kind of a "just trust me bro" situation.

4. the prompts this year were not very good. that is a purely subjective opinion i have, but a lot of us agree that they really stray from the concept of sickfic. we have a lot of heavier whump events floating around and the appeal of sicktember is that it is for fluffier, more low stakes stuff. seeing "cardiac arrest" and "anaphylaxis" and "medieval treatment" on there had me and a lot of others scratching our heads. their response to this is always "just sub it out!" but when we start running out of alt prompts because so many of the main ones are not what the audience is vibing with... there is room for critique there. there is room for a discussion.

i can't stress enough that the problem isn't necessarily these changes--they are not dealbreakers! the problem was sicktember's attitude. every single time anyone in the community tried to say 'hey, i think this idea could use work/tweaking' the response was basically just, again, the happy-go-lucky stepford smiler pr voice "we'd like to remind you that blah blah blah! happy writing, authors!" and absolute refusal to talk to their community at all. as i've said many times, this is not a dichotomy--where one side is "we fold to any criticism! our fans control us!" and the other side is "you're not entitled to anything! we run this event for free despite our busy lives!" like you can very much find a happy medium there but they just. do not.

none of that is a deal breaker, genuinely. i was still planning on participating up until the very end, and i obviously am now.

what was a deal breaker was them posting harry potter shit.

A/N: I’m so sorry! I know this is SO late😭

You were on your desk, annoyed because you had just gotten some more work assigned. Like you already weren’t doing enough. It’s not your fault that half of your coworkers are useless and can’t complete their tasks on time but somehow it’s your responsibility. You sigh and begin, already knowing it’ll keep you busy the rest of the evening and night which means you can’t spend time with your fiancée properly today as well. An hour later, you go to the kitchen to have a snack when you spot Wendy, sitting on the sofa looking upset, fidgeting with her hoodie restlessly.

“Everything ok baby?”, you ask taking a sip of your soda.

“You tell me…”, She said with a pout.

“Just work, they dumped some more on me…”, you rant.

“Why don’t you tell them it’s too much. You are only one person after all”, she suggests, feeling a bit more annoyed.

“It’s not that simple as that”, you point out.

“Of course it isn’t. Every single thing is complicated and unavoidable except me. I’m simple and can be put off for everything else.”, Wendy snaps, folding her arms and glaring at you.

You sigh, “No, it’s not like that. And you know that. It’s work”, you throw your arms up in frustration. “I can’t put it off like that but we can go on a date another day. It’s different. Why are you mad at for that. It’s not like I asked for it.”

“Because you rarely are here anymore. Always doing this or that and never taking a break. You are lost in your own world. You are here but you might as well not be with the way you have been the past month”, Wendy grumbled.

You clench your jaw, “I can’t help it if that’s the work I’ve to do. Not like you are always present either. Going off on your little trips and vacations. Concerts…Comebacks. Not every job is like being an idol. Some of us don’t work in a protected bubble.”

Wendy gets a pained look, “That’s not the case. You know I don’t think that. I’m only complaining because I generally don’t get this much free time and you are so busy in it.”

“How’s that my fault. Not like I was parading my boss to give me more work because I know you are free and have nothing to do.”, you snap at her.

“Stop being like this!”, Wendy says quietly, her voice quivering a little, “Fine then. If it’s that much effort for you to make a little bit of time with me then I won’t ask you anymore. Do what you like.”

“If I was able to do that do you think I’d be sitting here?”, you grumble.

“I don’t care anymore”, Wendy says with a shaky voice, “you just don’t care. I’m trying my best but…”, she looks at you, tears in her eyes.

You sigh, hating to see her this way, your heart aching. You want to hug and comfort her, tell her you are sorry but your pride isn’t allowing it. You felt like you were not in the wrong so then why did you have to be the one to make amends especially when you didn’t start this, “Yeah right, I don’t care…”, you say coldly, hating yourself the moment the the words leave your mouth.

She takes a shaky breath, trying her best to not cry, your words like daggers to her.

You turn back to your work, trying to leave this behind for now so you can cool off a bit before you decide what to do next to solve this argument.

“Atleast you are honest now”, she bitterly said as a single tear rolled down her cheeks.

You freeze and then slowly turn to her, clenching your jaw and gritting your teeth, your slowly take off your engagement ring and slam it at the table, “There. That’s what you want right? For me to go. I’ll do what you want then.”, you turn back and leave, walking angrily towards the door and leaving, slamming it shut.

Wendy stays still in shock, unable to register your words and actions at first and slowly breaking down as she realizes.

You storm out, walking aimlessly trying to calm yourself a little but you weren’t successful. It wasn’t fair at not. If you had your way you’d spend every waking moment with her. But unfortunately no one has that luxury and we all have to make do with what we have, trying our best. And evidently sometimes that isn’t enough.

You keep walking, sulking about till you reach a convenience store and walk in to get a snack. You buy your favorite chocolate and a soda before heading towards a nearby park. You find an empty bench and sit on it. You feel your phone buzz but you ignore it. You just wanted to be left alone right now. So you just sat and stared into the little pond, watching the birds while fighting with your thoughts and feelings. You didn’t realize how much time had passed until you noticed it was dark now. You sigh, noticing you haven’t had your chocolate yet so you take it out, tearing off the wrapper slowly. You are about to take the first bite when you suddenly think how Wendy always magically appears whenever you have chocolate. You almost smile and turn your head, expecting her to be there and just as quickly that burst of familiarity turns to dreaded pain. You take a small bite and fidget with your fingers, feeling even guiltier when you remember you had taken off your ring.

The chocolate doesn’t taste as sweet anymore and you just feel pained. You took out your phone to see a few missed calls and texts from her. Yet now your pride out of nowhere stops you from calling or texting her back even though it’s hurting not to. Frustrated by this confusion, you get up and take another quick walk, going up to a little hill nearby, it was a pretty spot but it gets pretty crowded in the day so you weren’t going there as much anymore.

As you look at the night sky, you decide you will go back home, apologize and try to make amends. Yes you weren’t completely at fault but if you had to be honest with yourself, then you were ready to take the blame for anything if it meant you and Wendy would stay together. You hated seeing her cry and instead of comforting her and explaining to her better, you snapped.

Lost in your thoughts, you feel a gentle tap on your back and turn to see an anxious looking Wendy standing nervously.

“H-hi.”, she said quietly, “I finally found you here the second time looking”.

You stay still for a moment, just looking at her and feeling guilty, the way she seemed excited yet hesitant to see you right now, the way she’s breathing harder than usual from walking uphill…god you just wanted to squeeze her so tight.

“Wendy, I’m sorry”, you suddenly apologize, hugging her tight.

She gasped softly from your embrace but then hugged you back tighter, “No I’m sorry too, I shouldn’t have been so cranky and demanding. I’ve seen how hard you work everyday and I just felt annoyed at your boss for taking you away from me so much. But I ended up snapping at you. I’m so sorry. Please don’t be mad at me anymore.”

“I’m not. I can’t stay mad at you. I love you too much….I’m sorry took off the ring and I’m so sorry I made you cry.”, you say quietly, holding on to her like your life depended on it.

She looks at you, smiling a little, “thank you sweetheart, my heart feels lighter now. Let’s go home, I feel like it’ll get cold really soon…”

You smile and kiss her quickly, “Yes let us, I still have so much work left”, you tease with a poke.

Wendy sighs with a smile, “I swear, I’m gonna hit you with a pan.”

You chuckle, “You didn’t let me finish, I meant to say I have work left for tomorrow. Tonight is just for us to cuddle and watch a movie.”

“I’d like that so much…”, Wendy says happily, linking her arm with yours as you both walk back home, all of your troubles gone and just eagerness awaiting as you can’t wait to spend some real time with her.

They hoard things like typical dragons. But it's not as straight forward like gold. It's more like Natsu hoarding friends and memories or Gajeel hoarding different types of music and cat stuff

They are all super territorial. Usually they keep it pretty suppressed but Lucy swears she heard Wendy growl at Sting when he jokingly said he was gonna join Team Natsu

You know how some animals hair stands up when threatened? That's a big thing for them but it's not like the hair on the heads. It's arm hair and then they get goosebumps and hunch over all freaked out

How did the "Phoenix sent Miles letters and then MVK burned them" headcanon belief turned an actual thing people believe happened even come about?? I truly have never seen a fandom so hellbent on making people conform to their headcanons that they literally make up things and pretend they happened in the games. It doesn't even make sense with MVK's character but I guess people are too hellbent on portraying him as comically evil.

ace attorney fans are very bad at playing ace attorney. tons of them will readily admit to not watching playthroughs or playing themselves but instead getting all of their knowledge on the canon through fanfiction and fanworks.

they are quite literally playing telephone. and the fandom is actively hostile to new fans, because we come in and say 'this fanon is directly contradicted by canon?' and IMMEDIATELY get dogpiled en masse by the 6 high school bullies in charge of What Fanon Is Allowed. obviously, that scares new fans off--if a fandom doesn't even respect the canon, then anything goes, and whoever wins is whoever shouts loudest.

no one wants their fandom experience to be shouting. so they move onto fandoms that are more welcoming, and only the nastiest people are left. it sucks, and ace attorney is bar none the worst example i've seen.

and like i said, it all just comes back to the fact that miles edgeworth is the fandom darling, very easy to project onto because fandom is often full of traumatized social outcasts who struggle with immeasurable amounts of self-loathing. miles edgeworth is like crack to them. but to acknowledge that he is a complex person who can make mistakes and hurt others means acknowledging that so can they. they are not brave enough or mature enough to do that, so they make all of miles' choices not his own, but the action of some faceless abuser in the shadows who "made him that way" or forced him to hurt others.

that's also why these same people go CRAZY when they encounter people who identify with and project onto a character like mvk. as someone with OCPD, i find manfred very relatable. i love that he's canonically disabled, i love that he's canonically neurodivergent, and i love that he is easy to project my own OCPD onto. when i bring this up in fan spaces, all respectable debate goes out the window and the naysayers just start reciting quips and memes at me instead. they cannot argue against it because they see the logical contradiction--why is it ok to project onto miles, but not onto manfred? they cannot allow me to expose that hypocrisy.

if only its transparency lead to any productive discussion about it. sadly, these people are just beyond help or debate, and so all i can do is block them and ignore them and pray they stop making sockpuppet accounts to harass me and my friends for liking some made-up collection of pixels.
