GG and DD and queer representation

As some of you might be aware, Greece has finally legalized same sex marriage. This was very exciting news!

I had an ask related to the Greek marriage equality debate and had begun drafting a response but ended up getting sidetracked, and by the time I got back to this post marriage equality had already won.

I figured I'd finish this response because it covers some ground that newer turtles might find useful (and because I hate leaving things like this unfinished).

First of all, it's OK to send me an ask in another language. Don't apologize for feeling better able to express yourself in your first language. I can always machine translate and ask for clarification when I feel I'm missing something (and the asker can clarify if I get anything wrong). Although I think you've done an adequate job of communicating your question here in English.

Second, as I've said many times, people should never read anything into whether I answer their ask or not. It's almost always just a result of me picking easier/quicker questions to answer.

Now, to address the ask.

Your question reflects some misconceptions/misunderstandings about GGDD's situation and about what turtles represent. Some of the topics you're discussing here are not directly related, and I'm going to try to break them down into their component parts for you.

The first and most important thing I can say to you is (and this is really, really key to understanding GGDD and understanding what turtles are in China):

GG and DD are not representatives of the queer community, and turtles are not a political movement.

Quite the contrary. I think it's fair and accurate to say that GG and DD, and by extension turtles, actively take steps to avoid being seen as part of a political movement, queer movement, protest movement or human rights movement.

(In fact, unfortunately many turtles are actually not particularly LGBTQ-friendly, don't support queer rights or gay marriage, and don't even consider GG and DD to be gay/queer. Many believe GG and DD are only 'gay' for each other, which is homophobic and a reflection of poor sex education).

It's essential for their own safety that GG and DD are not seen as political movement in China, or as figureheads of the queer rights movement. The Chinese government and even a sizable percentage of the public at large tend to take a very dim view of anyone who tries to organize and rally around subversive political causes.

Especially the current government, which is very repressive and has been rolling back LGBTQ rights and freedoms and cracking down on queer orgs, shutting down LGBTQ outreach organizations, etc. Pride events and large public gatherings are treated as disruptive protest movements, and have been banned.

There are queer male turtles in China who actively avoid openly identifying as turtles in order to protect the fandom from being seen as a queer rights movement.

Turtles are a fandom and are categorized and treated that way both by turtles and by passersby. Just a fandom of 'cute young girls' clowning over some handsome boys they ship together.

It's important that it stays that way. GG and DD cannot be seen as leading a movement, they cannot take on the role of leading a movement, and many turtles would likely not even support such a movement.

That's not because GGDD are queer, by the way - although under the current government queerness is becoming in some ways more restricted and frowned upon at least from an official perspective - it's because political movements are frowned upon*.

*That's not to say that Chinese people don't organize or protest around certain causes, but those causes tend to be more municipal or limited in scope. Broader political movements - especially ones that appear to stand against the policies of the current regime - are generally very quickly quashed.

That's also not to say that GG and DD aren't hugely inspiring to queer people all over the world, because they are.

GG and DD do not even present themselves as queer.

This is important to keep in mind. GG and DD are closeted, and are assumed by the public at large to be straight single men. 'Eligible bachelors'. This is a double-edged sword, but ultimately it protects them and protects their careers. Top stars are a lot more marketable if there's a perception of romantic availability, and relationships - even relationship rumors - can have a massively negative impact on a star's career.

Even straight married stars hide their relationship status and present themselves as single for this same reason, and straight married celebrity couples - even ones who are out as being married - who attend industry events will often pretend not to know each other in public (sound familiar?).

Coming out as (or being outed as) married or in a relationship is viewed as career suicide, and a star's numbers, opportunities and popularity will plummet. Not always, but usually. Producers and backers know what sells, and married stars just don't sell as much as hot singles do. Fans will pursue stars that appear to be single, and drop them when they marry or come out with a relationship.

Heteronormativity means the vast majority of people in China will assume GG and DD are straight, and GG and DD will not 'correct' them on that. Quite the opposite, they go along with and even at times might say or do things that help feed the perception that they're straight.

There are almost no LGBTQ public figures in China, and those who are out are not top stars.

As international fans, what we do and think doesn't matter much.

Things that happen in the international fandom are largely irrelevant to people in China, and are almost never going to have any impact whatsoever on GG and DD. What we think about them and what they represent to us is of little consequence to their careers.

For example, the ongoing i-fan debate about colored light banners is a bit of a wank because nobody in the international fandom is ever likely to be at an event where we would have to make decisions about what color of light banner to bring. Our thoughts about colored light banners are utterly irrelevant to the fandom in China.

It's really easy to lose sight of that as an international fan, and get so caught up in and wrapped up in our own ideas and arguments and debates that we forget that nothing we say do or think really has any relevance to GGDD's lives.

Our support for their projects and merchandise and brands, our subscriptions to platforms to view their dramas, our movie tickets, our fan support when they travel internationally... these things do have an impact on them and do matter, but the opinions and political ideas that we might discuss and debate here on Tumblr or even on Twitter are highly unlikely to ever reach their circle or directly impact them, whether positive or negative.

There are some notable exceptions to this. Making candy out of nationalistic posts - particularly posts about events of national mourning or major political significance - is unwise and could potentially backlash on them. More about that in this series of posts from Pie.

I talked about some of the other harmful things we should be avoiding in this post.

But the idea that anything international fans might do or say as turtles might negatively impact GG and DD is - for the most part - not a reflection of reality.

There are valid reasons to believe GG and DD value turtles and take strength from our support.

This fandom has been around for 6 years, and in all that time GG and DD have never sought to shut it down. Other dating rumors, CP, etc. have been shut down over the years, but turtles continue to be the top CP in China and the fandom is constantly growing.

GG and DD have been caught on camera many times reacting positively to turtle light banners.

LRLG rumors - which many turtles believe hold a lot of credibility - have repeatedly depicted GG and DD as enjoying our support, and have at times directly expressed GG and DD's appreciation and gratitude to turtles for our support.

Despite the fact that this fandom is hugely controversial among GG and DD's solo fans and even among some passersby, GG and DD and some of their associates continue to regularly feed us candy. This is something that simply would not happen if we didn't have GG and DD's support.

If we believe BJYXSZD, then it only follows that turtles would mean a lot to GG and DD.

There is a fine balancing act between GGDD and turtles, where we show our support and they feed us, and we all try to keep things light and fly somewhat under the radar.

But turtles aren't 'under the radar at all'. Turtles are an incredibly active, vibrant, loud fandom in China, with big events and public charity work and fan activities and banners and billboards, etc. etc. However, they manage to fly under the radar because they're 'just fans'. They're not a political movement and they're not troublemakers. They're just a bunch of fans having fun together.

They also fly under the radar by being seen as a crazy fringe group, a bunch of deluded clowns. They are underestimated and dismissed because of this, which protects GG and DD.

A lot of turtles wear that proudly because they know that they're acting as a shield for GG and DD. Turtles make it possible for GG and DD to get public support for their relationship without having their relationship outed. Turtles take all the hate and ridicule that's piled on them, so that they can show GG and DD they're loved and supported.

This is one of the things about turtles that is most beautiful and powerful. Turtles stick their necks out every day to support and protect GG and DD.

I talked about that in more detail in this post.

I hope this helps give some context about queer issues as they relate to GG and DD, and to the turtle fandom as a whole. While many people inside and outside China support GGDD and are inspired by them and view them as queer icons, the way they are framed and discussed will differ wildly between the Chinese and international fandoms, and what is said outside of China won't have much of an impact on GGDD. That's for the best.

Do have any opinions/resources about the situation in Niger? You’re the most knowledgeable of the people I know about French colonialism and that seems to be at the centre of the recent protests and coup.

First of all I am in no way or shape a specialist in the subject of French colonialism. I learned everything because it’s part of my family history (proud grand daughter and great grand daughter of freedom fighters) and the decolonization of all of Africa is part of the history of Algeria and therefore part of my history. Because you cannot learn about decolonization without learning about colonization I had to learn about France’s colonial history in the rest of Africa and eventually in the rest of world.

One thing to keep in mind when addressing military coups in Africa is that the military was created in a very different context than it was in the West. In Africa a lot of armies were created by freedom fighters who go fought against colonialism. It doesn’t mean that their modern version is not corrupted and that it is never used as a way to oppress the people. But unlike the west where the army was often created to protect the powerful, in Africa it often originated in groups of men fighting to protect the people from the powerful colonial power.

Anyway to your question! To use the words of Gabon’s first president after the independence in 1960 when he visited France after his election in 1961 “Gabon is independent, but between Gabon and France nothing has changed; everything goes on as before.” And this applies to too many African countries.

France refuses to accept the independence of African countries. They have a paternalist colonial behavior with us. Algeria is one of the rare former French colonies who manages to say fuck you to France and even Algeria is not completely free to say fuck you because of the consequences it could have on us Algerians who live in France. Because of France’s refusal to accept the independence and the desire to keep a form of control over the continent France has been involved in multiple assassination and coup d’Etat in the continent. They were also involved in multiple civil wars. They control the currency of some African countries. How can you be independent when your currency is owned and printed by the former colonizer?

Terrorism gives an excuse to France to send its army in the continent especially in the Sahel region and that same army pillages the region instead of actually helping against terrorism. Now when those countries decide that France’s presence is doing more harm than good and kick out France they are vilified. They are told they are controlled by someone else (depending on the situation their either accuse Algeria or Russia or both). It happened with Mali and Mauritania. And this is what’s happening with Niger.

Africa is a young continent in term of population. The youth kicked out colonizers in the 60’s and 70’s. Now the young generation wants to get rid of Neo-colonialism. African governments who are greedy and let the colonizers take whatever they want need to go. If it has to happen with a Coup d’Etat then so be it. That’s my personal opinion in general not specifically for Niger.

For Niger specifically I don’t know enough about Abdourahamane Tiani and don’t have enough perspective to decide if I support him personably but I have enough knowledge and perspective to support the demise of Mohamed Bazoum government and the decision to cut tie with France. France is still pillaging Africa and Bazoum was allowing it in Niger. The simple fact that the ECOWAS is standing in favor of Bazoum and willing to actually start a war should be enough to tell you that what is happening in Niger is bad for France’s interests. And if it’s bad for France’s interest if the new leader is not corrupted then it will be good for the country. The ECOWAS pretends to act in the interest of the continent but it only benefits France. The countries that were suspended are the same countries that are getting rid of French influence and Neo-colonialism. Corrupted African leaders who serve as France’s lapdogs refuse to have fair elections so the only solution to kick them out and gain real freedom is a coup or a revolution. It’s not an accident if all the latest coup d’etat in Africa happened in former French colonies. It’s not an accident if a big portion of the population support those coups. People are fed up by the control France still has.

Also I just want to add something off topic about terrorism in Africa and South West Asia. I find it extremely fascinating how countries where the US, France or the West in general came to “help” never managed to find a durable solution against terrorism. Meanwhile during the Algerian Black decade/civil war in the 90’s, Algeria refused to let France and the US send soldiers to “help” and we did eventually find a durable solution on our own.

Tyler Cowen is alas pretty deep into his journey of being a "cranky old man" in the commentary-sense; more and more his preferences and priors are overriding his charity. I found this post to be one of them, where he outlines his objections to Yglesias's calls for expanded welfare from the perspective of his expanded immigration stance:

Matt recently wrote a (gated) piece arguing that we should raise American taxes and increase the American welfare state.  I never understand how this squares with this desire to reach one billion Americans in the not too distant future.  To be clear, I also favor a much larger population.

If you ever have done hiring, and I believe Matt has at Vox, you will understand that so, so often selection is more important than ex post incentives.  That is, you need to get the right people into your firm, start-up, media venture, non-profit, or whatever.  And the right people can be very hard to find and attract, as I think Matt also has noted.

Now, on which basis do you wish to select people arriving into your country?  Do you wish to offer them a lower-risk, more secure, more egalitarian, less upside option?  Or do you want to reward ambition to a disproportionate degree?  Don’t forget you are building up the home base for most of the world’s TFP!

To me it is obvious that you should prefer the structure of rewards that attracts the harder-working, more ambitious people.  You want to send out the inegalitarian bat signal.

If you asked Matt, or anyone on his more progressive camp, what their response would be, it is an extremely obvious "what on earth are you talking about?". Immigrants aren't making immigration decisions based on slightly differing tax rates! "At the margins" sure sure whatever but the delta of expanding US immigration is 99.9% contained with our ludicrously restrictive immigration policy. I could trivially swap a 10% increase in net taxes on everyone (way higher than anything Matt is proposing in that piece) to go into welfare, in return for open borders, and increase US immigration along every axis of 'talent' ten-fold. I personally think the evidence for "low taxes is why the US is economically strong" is quite weak and that is a very consensus position, if we redistributed 5% more GDP we would still be a low-regulation massive-market wealthy techno-sophisticated financial hub, you would still have billionaires and VC funds and whatever you care about. These taxes will not create selection problems. (This doesn't make them a good idea necessarily, just saying they wouldn't overly impact immigration today)

Now its fine for Tyler Cowen to disagree, if he thinks a 5% margin is make-or-break on where a talented Indian chemistry researcher will find a job, that is fine, many people do. What makes him an 'old man' is nowhere in this piece to me is him acknowledging these differing assumptions. You are smart Mr. Cowen, you *know* your target doesn't think this is how labor force composition is determined, 10 years ago you woud have addressed that directly, maybe cleverly pointed out some sort of contradiction between his dual beliefs. Now its all handwaved away with an 'of course' that can convince no one who doesn't already agree.

I have seen this tendency more than once from him in the past few years; hopefully he recognizes it! Take a note from your coworker, 10% less confidence in your priors please.

(I am just gonna ignore the fact that the *political economy* of immigration and welfare means that immigrants often don't qualify for the benefits, and 'taxing immigrants to buy support for increased immigration' is probably the best tactic one has to get a deal done. Mental Health Benefits of Sleep - Not Equally Distributed

I came across this article about an MIT study on the benefits of some extra sleep that had a bit of a surprising result:

Subjectively, getting more sleep seems to provide big benefits: Many people find it gives them increased energy, emotional control, and an improved sense of well-being. But a new study co-authored by MIT economists complicates this picture, suggesting that more sleep, by itself, isn’t necessarily sufficient to bring about those kinds of appealing improvements.

The study is based on a distinctive field experiment of low-income workers in Chennai, India, where the researchers studied residents at home during their normal everyday routines — and managed to increase participants’ sleep by about half an hour per night, a very substantial gain. And yet, sleeping more at night did not improve people’s work productivity, earnings, financial choices, sense of well-being, or even their blood pressure. The only thing it did, apparently, was to lower the number of hours they worked.

The interesting thing about this study was that it was conducted on a population we don’t typically get a lot of studies on, those living in poverty. What the researchers discovered was that getting a little extra sleep at night wasn’t really providing much benefit. (Though they did see a benefit to those who could take a nap during the day.) As they dug into the details of the lives of their subjects, they discovered many of them with less-than-ideal conditions at home for sleeping. Noisy neighborhoods, oppressive heat, crowded with multiple people into small sleeping areas, etc.

They began to wonder if it’s not enough to simply get a little extra sleep, but to get better quality sleep, something that is not easy to do when your environment doesn’t provide the conditions to do that.

You can read the details at the link but I find it interesting for two reasons.

The results underscore the fact that much of our research in the US, and other countries, is done at universities and thus often uses the subjects that are available, college students. That can sometimes lead to conclusions that are valid for that population, but not necessarily everyone. I’m glad to see that this study targeted a population that wouldn’t normally get included in a sleep study.

We can clearly see the impact of the environment and living conditions on the results. It’s tempting to tell people struggling with anxiety to get more sleep, eat healthier, and get more exercise, but have we addressed the conditions that make simple changes like that harder for some people? In this case, a little more sleep that is disturbed and not restorative doesn’t help. What is needed are better conditions for restorative sleep. Similar to the need for affordable and available local healthy food options, safe public areas to get that exercise, etc.

It’s an easy copout for the mental health community to suggest self-care items that will help with mental health without acknowledging the reality for many. Telling people to do things like create more space for sleep, or make healthier food choices while still not making a wage that would pay for those things is just mean. What we do as a society matters when it comes to the mental health of all of our members. We can’t hide from that fact.

Going off your last post, what "simple measures" WOULD you propose to deal with incel terrorism, besides obvious ones like better mental healthcare and gun control? Off the top of my head, I'd suggest normalizing social mixers more (the sort of role that churches, Freemason/Elk lodges, etc., traditionally filled), encouraging women to make the first move in courtship, encouraging boys to cultivate their appearance and charm the way we teach girls (so making the first move would be not just more appealing for women, but also safer if "charm" for men encompasses respectful behavior), and encouraging men to emotionally support each other.

So there's a few things.

Firstly, number one, there's the gun control. Other countries have disaffected young men, white supremacists, and overly entitled misogynists, but they don't have as many guns and ready access to ammo. And the Second Amendment has never said what it's currently interpreted as; judges completely ignore the "well regulated militia" part. The right to bear arms is supposed to be regulated. What kind of regulations are necessary for the security of a free state? Well, among them, no fucking stochastic terrorism, which means we can't have randos running around with unregulated guns. Hell, put a gigantic tax on the ammo and then let people who require guns for work, have insurance, and all their permits in place, write the tax off. You can collect weapons all you want if they don't have ammo, and no one gets the right to write off more ammo than they can justify with their job duties or hobbies, or that they can insure.

How do we address the fact that boys are being taught absolutely toxic bullshit about how they're supposed to interact with girls? For this, I think you need some kind of program that involves male celebrities like musicians and athletes, and maybe tax breaks for Hollywood programs that work to model healthy behaviors for boys and girls toward each other. Less of this toxic "I'm a strong independent woman who doesn't need no man and that justifies me being abusive to boys and men in fiction". Model toward girls what healthy behavior to boys and from boys looks like, model toward boys what healthy behavior to girls and from girls looks like. Do PSAs. Get public schools to include a unit on healthy romantic behaviors in Health class in middle school, preferably as early as sixth grade. (I'd say put it in like 3rd, but I can just hear the parental screaming about sexualizing children, coming from the same people who'll buy their 1 year old onesies with "My heart belongs to DADDY" or "Lady Killer".)

Normalizing social mixers is absolutely a great idea! In fact, I believe we should be creating third-space socialization opportunities for girls and boys, little ones and teen ones, all over the place, that are outside of schools. Clubs that are not associated with schools, athletic leagues that let kids of the same general height and weight play together regardless of gender. Such things should exist for adults, too. Right now, there are socialization systems in place for college students, the elderly, and people who are willing to put in a ton of work and free time to stay involved with something, but aside from that, all there is for adults is bars, nightclubs, and work, if you want to meet new people. Or use online dating apps.

I do believe in teaching boys charm, hygiene, respectful behavior, and in emotionally supporting each other, and I believe in normalizing girls making the first move... but the forces that stand in the way of those things have been battered at since the 60's and if anything are resurging now. Misogyny, patriarchy and toxic masculinity (as opposed to healthy masculinity) are currently pushing really hard against the forces of reasonable behavior, and part of this is on feminists, who as a cohort have spent too much time demonizing men and not enough time explaining to them how they benefit from the behaviors women would like to see from them. I am not quite sure how to fix this particular problem. I feel like feminism as a movement screwed the pooch, and MRAs are actively in favor of patriarchy and misogyny, and there's really no movement of "let's be reasonable toward people of a different gender."

On the Vocabulary of Bigots

I would say somewhere around 2.3 times a day on average, I see someone who ostensibly works in political news or with a PhD in sociology or whatever quote a statement from some unrepentant bigot shouting about something like “the W*** media is censoring Govenor Big Oted!” and add a cheery little note that says “no, what people are criticizing Big Oted. His ability to say whatever he wants is completely unimpinged, and you in fact just linked to a televised interview with him in your post. Censorship is when the government passes laws restricting what people can and cannot say, like the new law banning teachers from saying anything at all regarding queer people or the slave trade, which the governor here is being criticized for signing.”

The apparent goal of these sort of posts is to go “ohoho! I have defeated you by pointing out that you are using the word ‘censored’ incorrectly! Surely you will now see the error of your ways and cease using it in the future!” Which they have to know isn’t going to happen, right?

Meanwhile if the bigot being quoted is inclined to reflect on this at all, their thoughts are just going to be “Ha! These idiots still get tripped up when we say ‘censored’ and don’t push back at all!”

See, horrible bigots don’t care at all what you think about them, or how words are normally used. They are motivated purely by a desire to convince everyone they can that everyone who isn’t a bigot is sub-human, and therefore should be treated worse than bigots. They are laser-focused on this. Everything they say and do is attempting to make progress along these lines. This especially includes the vocabulary they use, and the way they use it.

And in fact, it is a rare occurrence to find a Southeast Asian, South Asian and American in my school as it seems difficult to cope with language barriers. On that account, you’ll see people go into international schools, getting government subsidies which only prioritises on their education or some may even go to a lower-reputation-school that tends to be the so-called first impression “full of chaos and mishap”. I sometimes don’t understand why was I placed in a local school, where I can’t enjoy freedom and must acquire the ability to learn their native language. Could I just go back to my home country and learn to adapt a language that is my own? In those case-scenarios, I seemed to me that I lost my cultural identity and understanding of myself and in all honesty, I don’t even know how to communicate with my people.

In spite of worrying about those areas, have you ever heard of the saying by Alice Hoffman, who is an American novelist? She has quoted that “Every problem has a solution, although it may not be the outcome that was originally hoped for or expected”. This quote is simply stating that we can’t just stick with our own expectations towards a problem but it will come by soon. Using what I’ve been focusing, we can’t just simply escape the maze of misunderstanding of culture but rather try to embrace cultural diversity and spread awareness to others. Before explaining the impacts of cultural diversity, let me be your Wikipedia site for a couple of minutes. Cultural diversity in our discussion for today refers to the respect that we have for each culture and individual, and try to embrace them and have the eager attitude about their values. According to the data collected by the National Institute of Health, they discovered that neighbourhoods with high levels of ethnic diversity have correspondingly lower levels of social cohesion. And this is all caused by what I’ve mentioned, the lack of mutual respect to one’s culture and insult actions by the majority, leads to social disaggregation. So how can we avoid the social disaggregation? To be implementing activities that can lead to harmony and peace, like cultural development days, individual embracing week, could help with this social dilemma. Hence, it leads to the possibility of higher chances of getting together and social cohesion. Another factor that makes cultural diversity extremely crucial is the advancement of exchanges for innovation and creativity. We all need further collaboration to strengthen our world’s future. If we had lower technological, social or economic development, would we just be living in the Stone Age? Without any wonderful and fascinating discoveries from famous scientists or engineers, it would not benefit the future generation but place them in the landfill of stupidity, which almost it gave me the vision of children having low motor skills. Last but not least, the most important one yet, the wider talent pool for talents. Have you ever realised that most of the outstanding prodigies are from different cultural backgrounds? If there was a massive diversity in a workplace, school place or even a community, there would be more talents available in an area.

To sum up all that has been stated, I believe that the impact of cultural diversity is extremely valuable and must be addressed and placed as a global priority.

Did I ever want the job? No. Did I ever apply for it? Yes.

So, I asked [𐑡] for suggestions to escape from [my job] and, ideally, the City of London. [S] was still on the [same] premises when I asked, which had set me off—back then I don’t think I felt able to approach [S] directly then (although at one point in 2017, I think, I did tell him that [he had] my ideal job and he said it wasn’t as ideal as I might think). I think I hoped that [𐑡] would say “oh [my friend] knows [S], why don’t we make an approach to him…” But, equally, I was losing confidence, I’d kind of given up thinking I was good enough for the “overseas” bit and I’d sort of decided that I needed to do it in two stages--out of [my job] and then out of the country. So, although I was probably hoping “at best” that [𐑡] would speak to [S] or ask [his friend] to do so (and I remember that quite clearly), I might have presented my request to [𐑡] less specifically, less in the manner of a direct request--or I might have said “could you or [your friend] have a word…”, it’s certainly possible.  Anyway, he said “can I send you details of this new programme to recruit [women] with different kinds of experience and expertise?” and right on the spot I expressed ambivalence.

So, [𐑡] sent me the application forms at [my address] and I filled them out while [the Boy] and I were on holiday in Guernsey that year. I submitted the forms and told [him] I’d done that and he invited me for coffee at Natural Kitchen. And anyway I don’t even need to use my pre-frontal cortex and the power of reasoning to know that being a judge would be a living death--that’s a base amygdala kinda thing.  I said it to [E], for example, for years before that.  He wanted to become a judge, it was a kind of life dream despite all his success as a [lawyer], we had several difficult conversations when I had to explain that I didn’t see the world that way, wouldn’t be interested in following in his footsteps, didn’t want a closer association like he did with judges (including [𐑡])--back in the day [E] seemed to need my approval or admiration, or at least to want it quite badly. Anyway, as I’ve said, [𐑡] was very angry but in that suppressed way he has.  One thing he said during that conversation was that he’d been appointed as a kind of mentor.  He didn’t actually say, I think, that he was assigned to me--because that would be odd, given his insistence on “friendship”--but at the same time he strongly implied it.  And perhaps he didn’t even say that he’d been appointed, maybe he just said something like “I’ve invited you to coffee because [someone influential] has been concerned to invite qualified [people] to act as mentors to this programme” or something.  I had the sense of his hedging what he was saying and I was confused... In contrast at some point--it may have been then or on the phone later—I recollect that he dropped in that this was really an application for a taster opportunity. I’m trying to think about why I was confused about that, having filled out the forms. Looking back I still don’t know (on that sole point) exactly who said what, what the forms said or what I understood.  I think possibly that [he] sort of sold this as a possible alternative route...  I did understand most of that from the beginning but there was nonetheless a kind of shift--from the idea that it was an application for the first stage of a long and highly competitive process to the idea that it was an application for a taster session to see if you might want to embark on a long process.  Anyway, another reason (if I needed one) for my ambivalence was indeed this idea that all I was doing was embarking on some kind of long evaluative process (at best) and I really felt not only that I didn’t want to make it over the finish line at all but also that it was a distraction from the urgency of my needing to escape.  In other words, even had I wanted to be a judge, at that stage I would have preferred an instant low key job outside the City of London and legal environs rather than a more prestigious but deferred job within it.

All of this may seem credible and trustworthy to any uninformed customer, however an experienced trader would immediately spot the fraud.

The truth is that St. Vincent and the Grenadines is an offshore zone known for its lack of forex regulation. In other words, any broker based there can offer investment services without being licensed or authorized by any watchdog. This makes these firms particularly dangerous as they don’t obey the rules and are not obligated to meet any requirements.

And if you doubt our words, just visit the official website of FSA. The moment you land on it an important notice will appear, saying that forex brokerage activities are not licensed in this country. As you see, what AM Tradex claims is just smoke and mirrors. There’s no way that it could possibly be licensed in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the fact that this broker lies about that is already a huge red flag. Don’t invest with such impostor firms, as their only aim is to rip off unwitting traders.

This is just a simple web-based platform with basic tools and indicators. What AM Tradex claims however is highly exaggerated – this is barely “the best platform you’ll ever try”, in fact it’s just ok. Not to mention that it can’t compete with much more advanced platforms like MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, which are proven to be the best in the sector – but this time for real.

MT4 and MT5 have been preferred by most of the reputable brokers for a pretty good reason. You can benefit from a whole bunch of fantastic features that ease your trading experience. For example the so-called Expert Advisors can perform the trading for you – you just have to set certain conditions – the moment the trading bot finds them, it will start trading right away.

In fact MetaTrader 5 and MetaTrader 4 are very easy to use even for novices. You can download the app and start trading right off the bat, no matter where or when. You should know as well that this piece of software is really safe – all transactions are encrypted, as well as your IP address.

You can effortlessly install MT4 and MT5 on your smartphone, computer and tablet. Note however that the apps can’t be downloaded on any device anymore, since Apple has removed them from its AppStore. When it comes to the minimum deposit there is one huge contradiction. On its homepage AM Tradex claims that the minimum initial deposit is 10 USD. However on the chart above you can see that the minimum deposit starts from 500 USD. This is a great difference and speaks only one thing – that this broker tries to mislead its customers. Not to mention that 500 USD of minimum deposit is still too high, given the fact that the usual amount for the sector is around 250 USD or even less – micro accounts require around 10 USD.

As for the spread, this broker promises competitive spreads from 1.4 pips. After we saw its trading platform, there really was a spread of 1.5 pips, which is fine in general. Just as you know any spread below than 2 pips is known to be less costly. Nevertheless, we don’t recommend investing here for the reasons stated above.

The leverage of 1:500 however is too high and too risky without a doubt. In fact there is a leverage cap in most of the countries that regulate forex brokerage activities – 1:30 in the UK and EU and 1:50 for the US for instance. This measure aims exactly to minimize the potential risk of failure. Yet, if you want to trade with higher leverage we suggest looking at some of the offshore subsidiaries of reputable forex brokers here.

Deposit/Withdrawal methods and fees

On its website AM Tradex doesn’t mention anything about its payment methods. This is yet another red light for scam, as most legitimate brokers would normally describe this in detail.

Note however that crypto payments are proven to be absolutely anonymous and irreversible, that’s why scammers like them so much.

But no matter the payment methods, we don’t recommend trading with this broker, as it’s totally unlawful.

How does the scam work

Remember that usually scammers want to make you invest with them no matter what it takes. This means that they might try to contact you via email or phone in case you provided them with this information. They’ll try to convince you to deposit as soon as possible, advertising their platform as very advanced and their trading conditions as risk-free and advantageous. Don’t believe them however as these fraudsters don’t intend to trade your money at all – they just manipulate their software.

Very often scammers like to fake your trading results as well, just to lure you into investing more and more until you realize it’s all a huge lie.

Before you find this out however you may face some more bad surprises. For instance it may turn out that you are obligated to pay a certain fee if you want to withdraw your funds – sometimes the fee can exceed 20%. Note that reputable brokers don’t ask for a fee upon withdrawal request or even if they do, the amount is insignificant.

We don’t advise you to deposit or pay fees with such offshore brokers, as you may find out that a withdrawal is impossible no matter what you try.

What to do when scammed

If you realize you have been a victim of financial scammers, don’t trust people on the internet who suggest helping you restore your funds in exchange for a certain fee. It’s very probable that they are also fraudsters, possibly the same who tricked you the previous time.

Still, you can try to retrieve your money if you have paid with credit or debit card – you can turn to the bank that issued your card and file for a chargeback in 540 days. In case you used PayPal or Skrill you can also open a dispute. Unfortunately crypto currency transactions are irreversible as we already stated.
