There are so, so, so many reasons why this incredibly fake story is incredibly fake. But I just keep reading the API technobabble and I can't stop laughing.

Mf out here bragging about how not only is their code unreadable and unmaintainable, but also their documentation is unreadable and undiscoverable. The problem that this creative writer has is that they need to be indispensable in this story, but unfortunately an indispensable programmer is uniquely gifted at making themself superfluous as quickly and efficiently as possible in as many contexts as possible.

The "nobody is familiar with Python" part is probably my favorite. Python is one of the easiest programming languages to learn. It's so easy that it's the language that engineers (real engineers like chemical engineers, biomedical engineers, material engineers, not software engineers developers) use to help them automate things in their work. Anyone who is familiar with any other programming language can pick up Python in under an hour. You who are familiar with zero programming languages could probably pick up a decent amount of Python in a month. Try it! It is probably easier than you think.

Moreover there's no way the code got push to production without several eyes on it. Most companies do either code reviews or pair programming or both. It makes no sense that zero other people understand what's going on with this code. Unless it's really buggy

The fact that someone tried to use it and it corrupted a CSV file (??) shows that it's actually really buggy. If the software was so good, anyone would be able to run it

That goes double for the documentation being so bad that nobody knows how to read it. The entire purpose of documentation is to explain how code works. You failed at your one job.

If the only documentation is something that's hard to find, that looks bad on OOP for two reasons: 1) Documentation is normally put inline next to the code precisely for the reason that it would be easy to find. Don't want to see what a nightmare their code with no inline docs looks like. 2) Their programming practices are so bad that their other documentation is hard to find. The program should have a file called README that either has all the documentation or tells you where to find all the documentation.

They should already be suffering whatever fines or consequences or whatever for already being out of compliance. It would make more sense if they were at risk of being out of compliance if they didn't implement XYZ by January

There's a lot of weird wording here that indicates a lack of familiarity with software: "complex API", "documentation library", "single threaded". That's not how we use those terms

If you're a software developer for a company the size of Disney (ABC's parent) then what OOP asked for is your starting salary straight out of undergrad. Def not a raise for a senior engineer who's been in industry 10+ years. Def not more than their manager is making.

At a company that size, your direct manager has no ability to decide what the terms of your hiring agreement would be. Def not over text. It would need to go through HR and probably legal as well

I’m curious how binary cant work for admech since day 1. At first, I thought it’s just high speed alternation in frequencies of sounds to denote 0 and 1, just like how computer cable does with voltage. So I wrote a python script to convert natural language to binary code then to sound based on the idea (so that I can curse in binary in ttrpg). However, since the human auditory cortex can only distinguish sound about 20ms apart, the current commonly used binary coding method (Unicode) that requires 8 bits to encode for one letter (16 bits for one character in Mandarin) would make binary cant less efficient than natural language through the bare ear. As a result, binary cant users not only need vocal implants but also auditory implants to receive info (or perhaps cortex implants to decode). Based on these assumptions, binary cant would be able to happen in sound frequencies not perceivable by the original human cochlea so techpriests conversation can be extremely quiet. And more efficiently, just through data cables.

Or it could be the other way around, scientists might develop more efficient binary language without basing it on the symbol system of natural languages (I’m not that familiar with linguistics so I don’t know if this is possible or not).

However, the sound techpriests made in the game mechanicus doesn’t sound like my assumption. There are definitely more than 2 pitches used in the conversations (which makes it less binary...) and they seem to be faster than natural language. I still couldn’t figure out what’s happening here. Do the twisting pitches actually encode more than one bit? Is binary cant actually an analog signal encoding a digital signal? Or is the sound effect just mean to sound better for the game?

My thoughts on Animation Vs. Coding

I LOVE it !

I like how it shows the different uses of coding with the uses of different libraries. I also like how it's in Python, the most used programming language. And how it can be used to do incredibly complex things at the end of the episode.

However I do think this is the weakest of the Animation Vs Education episode we got so far.

The first reason for this is the time. It's only 8:28 minutes, it's litteraly shorter than Animation VS Geometry ! Now don't get me wrong I don't think the longer is the better, far from it. But with a topic as vast as coding is, I think it's kinda sad we didn't get more.

The second reason is because of the narrative structure of the episode : It's Animation Vs Math, but worse.

Let me explain : Act 1 Yellow/Orange explore their new environnement while learning the base knowledge they'll need in this new world. Act 2 an inhabitant of this world interrupts them and a fight ensue, while fighting they learn more and more complex knowledge but still quite simple. Act 3 They're now fighting with really complicated concepts and in their conflict, they'll end up destroying the world with a nuke/a big laser. And in act 4 they discover they've gone too far and become friends with the episodes antagonist.

Of course there's difference, but essentially it's basically the same

With near half the time AvMath had, this episode is really fast. There's no pause between the fight to let Yellow truly learn the intermediate knowledge. Why is Yellow capable of what they're doing in the end ? When did they learned how a function or a class worked ? The computer (we need a name for this lil guy) was the one coding all the time when Yellow was just Interrupting it or doing minor adjustements. How did Yellow went from playing with a print and two variables to doing a whole neural network ? ("but you see there's a time lapse between when they started and finished the neural network, they learned during that time" No they didn't, they immediatly started like they knew exactly what to do and not experimenting. Yellow didn't learn there, they already knew)

And with these two reasons combined, I think that's why Animation Vs Coding feels less mastered than the previous AvE episodes.

I still love this episode as someone who loves coding, but with previous episodes being such bangers it's normal that this one was gonna have some flaws. As I said, coding is a big of a topic to choose, so of course things would've been missing and all.

What is the best programming language to learn

It really depends on what you want to do with it. C# is heavily used for games. Python is great for scripting. Javascript is still pretty much your only option for web-based stuff, outside of some tricky and heavy cross-compiling nonsense. 

Python’s pretty simple so I’d recommend it for starters. You can always switch to something else if it doesn’t jive with you
