WOII: COMPULSORY: IN SUMMARY

WOII has given me a lot of insights about the world, not just about design in particular. It taught me how to be sensitive to my environment. Everyone’s upbringing and traumas are different. It taught me more about perception and awareness, and how everything in life has a breakdown to its structure, how it is created, how it is presented. As a designer, I believe this module has shaped me to be more thoughtful and intentional about what I consume and produce. EVERYTHING that plays a role in creating plays a huge role to the intentions that are presented. Colours, layouts, texts, all of these might seem minor, or insignificant, but if I introspect deeper, there is always an intention to what is being used in a design process. Though at first I find it really mundane to study and attend WOII lessons, I will have to admit that it is part of the process for design. It pushes me to be a better designer, making use of different topics like postmodernism or post structuralism in my work. I realised a lot of the things I have learned come into play with my other modules for this semester like Studio, Photography, Craft and Digital whereby all the deliverables have a creative process behind it.

What I Learned 3/23

The Beatles wrote "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from starting off by seeing the words "gently weep" from a book, and built off of that.

You won't get anywhere by forcing anything - patience is a virtue. There are no rules to anything. There is no "normal" or "it's supposed to be this way" to any aspects of life. As long as you're okay with something, and it isn't hurting you more than it's serving you, it's okay to be happy with something that isn't traditional.

This evening, I asked the cards "What did 2021 teach me?" I drew the 5 of Wands from The Ink Witch Tarot and the Mountain from The Paper Oracle. 2021 was a hard year. My body, mind and spirit took a beating and it felt like I had to move mountains in order to get through different parts of it. However, I found a way to find my way through it. What minimalism could be for you?

1. CHALLENGING YOURSELF TO LIVE WITH LESSER AND LESSER.

This is mostly related to the number of things you own. This is what you could call an extreme minimalist. They could have adopted this lifestyle because they have been travelling with a backpack, live in a small space or like to challenge their self control.

2. THE GREEN BUDDY

This minimalist buys and owns things that lessen their negative impact on our planet. They might spend money on something that is expensive but durable and environment-friendly.

3. THE MONEY SAVER.

The main reason they started with minimalism is to save money. They spend frugally and rarely, so they are rarely ever in the habit of getting new possessions.

4. AESTHETIC.

One of my earlier posts discussed about going further than reducing the material things that you own. This kind of minimalism includes being mindful, peaceful and happy through having less. 

5. THE STARTER

They have just started and are experimenting and finding out what aspects of minimalism do they like. Their inspiration might have ben from a hoarder, another minimalist, an incident in their life or the need to keep their space clean and tidy.

6. ONLY USEFUL THINGS PLEASE!

They are not that bothered with how many things they own but rather with the fact that everything they own should serve a purpose. In simple words, quality is essential.

I learned a lot in 2020 like spray painting has pipe to make an inspector happy in the wind. This happened this year and I thought for sure I was going to have to shave IG off. But as always, my hvac family came to my rescue and recommended WD-40 to clean up my beard. Well, it worked perfectly. What I learned

For the people who don’t understand what it’s like to be told that they must speak English in America and being told that they are “in America” so they “must speak our language”

I’ve been in Israel for the last two months. During those two months I have realized this country is filled with various languages. It’s a melting pot of the Middle East. I have been treated (for the majority of this trip) very kindly by the natives and everyone has been willing to speak to me in English when I don’t feel confident asking questions in Hebrew. However, about a week ago, I was on a bus with my friend who is a guy. The bus was packed so we sat in the front where we found two available seats that just happened to be behind the bus driver. Since English is both our strongest language we were happily speaking our native language. No one on the bus questioned it as they are used to a variety of languages. However the bus driver turned to us and shushed us. He stared at me and I assumed I was speaking too loud and therefore dropped my voice as to not bother him. Even at a whisper this man turns his head and gives me a death stare. He said שקט which in Hebrew means quiet. At first, I was confused. I had just lowered my voice and really could not be speaking much quieter. I kept thinking, as we continued to talk, why is this man staring at just me and not my friend who was also speaking English. Why is this man taking every opportunity to make me uncomfortable and why am I unable to speak on a bus when it is commonly very noisy. I couldn’t help but wonder why my friend was not being blamed either, why was I the one taking the grunt of the maddening stare? After another minute of talking with my friend, speaking even quieter in hopes of the bus driver not hearing me, the bus driver starts screaming “שקט” and starts complaining. He yelled in Hebrew that he couldn’t understand what we were saying and that he didn’t want us to talk in English. On that day, I got a very small glimpse of what it was like to be targeted for talking my native language while also being targeted for being female. For the next 15 minutes of the bus ride I had to hold back tears. I had never been yelled at for simply talking a different language and it hurt even more that it was because I was female and not male. I broke down sobbing as I walked back to my apartment. If I could be this upset due to one man’s anger, I could not imagine the life of many Immigrants being constantly told to “speak English or go back to your country”. The lesson of the story is please take care of not native speakers, please make them feel comfortable, and when you don’t know their language, take some time to learn it and learn their story. It will make the world of difference.
