Been wanting to post this for a while... these are all of the books that led me to the 2012 bicycle tour where I rode 4000 miles performing Shakespeare on the street, that eventually became #WHATSHOULDBETHEFEAR. No Applause Just Throw Money is a history of American vaudeville. It's basically the history of American show business. The Road is a post-apocalyptic pseudo-western, road story told with biblical spareness and scale... On the Road is a classic American story of wayward, deviant, sublime adventure and revelation through an America that's lost its innocence but not its wonder. Free For All is an oral history of my spiritual mentor, Joseph Papp, who invented the NY Shakespeare Festival, a relentless hard-nosed Jew from Brooklyn who took deadly serious the mission to bring great entertainment (which when entertainment is great THAT'S when it's art, I'd argue), including the very best and most thrilling Shakespeare America could muster to regular ppl. He was a snob about art but loved the people. My kinda guy. LOVE this book. The Alchemist might have been the book that really gave me the courage to follow whatever crazy impulse told me I could survive my tour. It served as almost a spiritual road map. It's a simple story about a young man who takes a similarly grand journey. Walking on Water sort of reaffirms all the suspicions I had that there is something divine at work in all great art. It comes as close as anything I've ever read to making that most seem demonstrable and palpable. Finally there's Born Standing Up, Steve Martin's memoirs, which is as Jerry Seinfeld said perhaps "the best book ever written about being a comedian." It's such a complete, personal vivid picture of the path one takes toward becoming an actual fully formed artist, moment by moment, in detail. SO formative for me. (Full disclosure: I never read "Into the Wild", but the film the book inspired changed my life.) Anyway, I recommend all of these. I also recommend my one-man show WHAT SHOULD BE THE FEAR, which is playing in Greenpoint, every Thurs & Fri til Aug 4. Link for tix in my bio.

In 2012, after the sudden death of his best friend, actor and musician Ralf Jean-Pierre aka Precious Gorgeous was determined to conquer his fears by doing the thing that scared him most. Alone on his Surly Long Haul Trucker bicycle, Ralf circled America, riding over 4000 miles in eight months while performing his favorite Shakespeare scenes for unsuspecting audiences. Infectiously wonderful animation my astonishingly talented #BlackGodPantheon brother @starbeebee2 made for WHAT SHOULD BE THE FEAR. It says album because my hope is to release a record soon with all of the original songs I composed for the show. Get tickets to tonight's show, or for next week at the link in my bio! This show has been such a blessing to make and to perform, I please come see it! #animation #GIF #art #artist #illustration #illustrator #cartoon #Shakespeare #adventure #heroesjourney #intothewild #theater #theatre #nytheater #nytheatre #americana #americanfrontier #bicycletouring #onemanshow #bluesmusic #hiphop #nyhiphop #indie #indietheatre #blessing #WHATSHOULDBETHEFEAR (at GAMBA Forest)

For a "low" art-form like rapping to shake the foundations of the fine-art world and disrupt, for an icon of rap bravado to make himself so utterly vulnerable.. and for it all to turn out so thrilling, emotive, and jubilant and to bring so many kinds of people together. I mean, what beats it? #hiphop #rap #musicvideo #jayz #444 #mchg #Brooklyn #newyork #picassobaby #WHATSHOULDBETHEFEAR (at Brooklyn, New York)
