i am having such a strong reaction to this!! like that's the same lil guy! that's our guy! and i love him so damn much and he's my favorite silly billy and he's sweet and kind and loving and dopey and beautiful and strong and brave and courageous and the biggest brightest shining light!!!

that's our guy! and he was so so little and then he was not and he's still wearing the same clothes and i bet this was a hand-me-down to begin with and i bet it's so soft and comforting now. and he still latches on to it.

and the time passes. and he keeps going back to this shirt.

he grew up in it, he fell in love in it, his heart got broken in it, he met the love of his life at the docks in it. the cycle repeating itself and he still had this shirt. until things quieted down. he got married. they moved out. he settled into his life and his body and his threadbare beige shirt with the little buttons.

and now mickey wears it. he sticks his little hands out. sleeve paws for ian to giggle over. he's endeared by it.

hey ray! i've been very sleep-deprived for the past week so hopefully his comes out semi-coherent.

YES! mickey is ABSOLUTELY so well taken care of. in general, ian loved being an emt and felt very fulfilled helping people so he jumps at the opportunity to use the skills he learned to tend to those he loves. but it goes beyond that when it comes to mickey. he knows mickey grew up very neglected. he had no one to take care of him when he would hurt himself or got sick growing up. little mickey had to tough all of it out on his own, alone in his room with no one to care for him or show him any love. it breaks ian's heart whenever he thinks about it.

because of this (and because he loves him man so much), ian lavishes mickey with care and attention anytime he gets even the smallest injury or is feeling the least bit sick. he goes overboard because he wants mickey to feel so loved and cared for. mickey burns his hand taking food out of the oven? slices his finger sifting through the mail? got a load of mosquito bites playing with franny in the backyard? ian is instantly whipping out his big ass first aid and tending to mickey, all gentle touches and forehead kisses.

don't even get me started on when mickey gets a cold. ian's in the kitchen cooking a giant pot of chicken soup. he's written out a medication schedule and is spooning cold medicine into mickey's mouth every four hours. he's coming in to bring mickey water and juice to make sure he's hydrated. he's rubbing vicks vaporub on mickey's chest to ease his coughing. he's set up a whole netflix queue with mickey's favorite shows and movies. he's lying in bed with mickey, stroking his hair and murmuring soft words to help him fall asleep.

you know mickey probably grumbles a little and half-heartedly complains that ian is overreacting or doing too much or that he doesn't need all that attention, but really he's basking in it and relishing the feeling of having someone love him that much and care so much about his well-being.

thanks for sending this ask and making me think about all this. i've been sitting here with a smile on my face the whole time writing this. really made my sunday evening.

I'm fairly certain that this scene is in S11 and if that is the case, then this Ian is healthy in multiple ways.

First, right off the bat, look at him. He's solid. He doesn't look like some adolescent boy that make all the skeezy old men go "mmm." There's muscle definition, there's body hair, there's a full, happy belly. Healthy.

He's also in a healthy relationship, finally. Sure, Mickey doesn't have a job here (again, going off that it's S11) but they're married. And there's a trust there that neither of them have ever had before. They know the other won't just leave. Ian is aware that Mickey loves him because of who he is and it's not only about sex.

Then comes the fact that he's medicated. And to me the most positive thing about that is the fact that Ian is medicated for Ian. Sure, he takes his meds and I'm sure he has flashbacks to manic episodes or even the days he's been down. But at the end of the day, it's for him and I think that's fucking beautiful.

And let's not forget the healthy relationship he has with his family. I mean, sure, they get annoyed with each other but there's always that love there between all of them and I'm sure that's really important to Ian. A connection to his siblings is something that I know he'd be devastated to lose and I honestly think there was a few times in his past he felt like he may have lost them along the way.
