FINALLY got all my pottery out of the kiln! All of the pieces with the pink glaze were supposed to look the same, but as it turns out they react really strongly with whatever is in the actual clay so it looks wildly different on red versus white clay. Not mad, though! I will also have to sand down the slit in the yarn bowls because it’s too small to get any yarn in but that’s okay, otherwise I’m really proud of them! Nothing exploded or stuck to the kiln shelves so I’ll take that as a win.

Some of the changes I’ve made in the studio lately so the throwing process is less overwhelming and straining for me!

I'm really happy with how my pottery is turning out so far! I'm really looking forward to glazing things.
A few of these are gifts for friends and family, but most will be up for sale in my shop when they're done.

Hi! I was hoping you or your followers could help me.
I'm in my 4th(?) beginners wheel pottery course, and since the class is so small and we've had at least one prior course, the teacher asked us to come with ideas that aren't mugs or bowls.
I've tried to look for ideas, but they're things like colanders and juicers, which don't make me excited.
I appreciate any help!
hi!
I personally am very fond of jars and other lidded containers. lids can be a challenge and I delight in trying new lid-making methods and adding sculptural bits to them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
you can experiment with throwing a closed form (I found that very challenging) and cutting it to make a lidded vessel -that’s how I made this little pumpkin
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there are infinite ways to alter a piece of clay, but altered pieces with a lid and a place to keep little things is at least 12% more whimsical
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this one is hand built obviously but you could put a garlic shaped lid on a wheel thrown jar (a garlic pot, maybe?)
Tumblr media
once you get comfortable with lidded vessels, you could try making a teapot! they are a difficult thing to make, and little tiny details can completely change a teapot’s aesthetic (for better or worse lol) but you will learn a lot in the process
Tumblr media
(and if you’re anything like me, you’ll then have a teapot that can hold a single cup of tea lmao)
there are also plates, which I found very enjoyable to make on the wheel. and spoon rests! I personally think everyone should have spoon rests lol
other potters (wheel throwers especially) please share any non-mug/bowl ideas that you can come up with!
good luck with your class, and feel free to share pictures of whatever you create! 😁

Soup Bowl (glaze fail)
throwback to my high school pottery era - i threw this soup bowl out of some reclaimed white stoneware and then i had my friend glaze it since i was sick. she forgot to mix the glaze well and this was the product! although i can never use the bowl for actual soup purposes, it is a beautiful piece on my mother's mantle in her house. i love the drips, i love the ombre from clear to aqua to dark midnight blue. i also love how i put ridges on the base of the foot while trimming, this was back when i lovvveeeed trimming and would always do this to every piece of mine. i want to throw something like this soon!

If y’all ever get the chance to take a wheel throwing class, DO IT! I’m definitely still not at the point where I’m regularly feeling confident in my technique but it’s so much fun watching my pottery improve. Throwing 2 pounds of clay is the easiest for me at the moment but I tried out some 3 pound bowls (maybe yarn bowls?) but I want to make a 7 pound pot so wish me luck. I don’t really plan on making it a regular part of my art practice since the flesh vessel has Problems and it’s very physically demanding but I don’t regret it either. I’ll post some trimmed and glazed pieces later.
