And in every fight with your partner, there’s a moment where you could push the button and tear the whole house down, but you don’t because you care about them. In “Whitecaps,” Tony and Carmela reach that point, and then they don’t just push the button. They keep escalating until his fist is disappearing into the wall and he’s shoving her up against the wall and the look in her eyes is simultaneously one of terror and excitement. She doesn’t know where this is going to end, and for once in this marriage, that’s something kind of thrilling.

The Whitecap Dakota First Nation signed a Self-Government Treaty with the government of Canada in Ottawa earlier this week that formally recognizes the members as Indigenous peoples of Canada.

This treaty is a step away from the Indian Act, an assimilation policy that was enacted in 1876 for Canada to govern and give authority over Indigenous peoples in the country.

The Self-Government Treaty was signed between Whitecap Dakota First Nation Chief Darcy Bear and Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Marc Miller on May 2, 2023. Chief Bear said he is proud that his community was able to make this treaty to better the lives of generations to come.

“There’s still more work to happen. This is just another step in the process,” said Chief Bear. “And so, it’s … another milestone and we’re going to continue to keep moving forward.” [...]

Whitecap Dakota First Nation is writing history in Saskatchewan.

Members of Whitecap Dakota have voted for their community to become the first self-governing Indigenous nation in Saskatchewan, according to a news release from the First Nation.

Members cast their votes on Oct. 6 and 7, either in-person or online, with 92 per cent supporting the proposal to adopt a constitution and giving chief and council the mandate to sign a governance agreement negotiated with Canada, according to the release.
