Headcanon: Mance Raydar's given name came from his mother mishearing the word lance, and wishing it it would make her son appear more southern and thus worthy of being guarded by the Wall.
His last name came from the word raider, a taunt shouted at him when he was a child. When he defected, he added the "y" to appear more properly free folk.

Because RFK pissed me off by saying that autistic children will "never write a poem", I'm sharing a poem I wrote back when I was sixteen.
The Wolf Knight
It was a fine summer morn a many hundred years ago
In an oaken glade growing rich with ferns where ice-cold water did flow
A fair noble maiden of nineteen years sat down in the forest pool
And bathed her body in the water, so clear and calm and cool
A wolf roamed by, with fire-lit eyes, and spied her bathing there
He ran along to a great gnarled oak, and soon off went his fur
For he was a wolf-man, with the mind of men, who longed for that bathing maiden
He pulled on the clothes he had laid down, and went to the pool in the bracken
The girl leapt up, and hid her breasts, and crossed her legs in shock
For there stood a man, with fine red hair, sitting upon the rock
His eyes were bright as the burning sun, his face as fine as fire
She moved slowly away from him, and still he stood higher
“Do not fear, young maid, for I am a noble knight
I have seen your lovely form, and your face shining with light
I will never harm or hurt you, or marry you for wealth and land
All I ask is your love and body, with an honest, open hand.”
“Thank you, good sir, although I do not want your gaze
I love this wood as a private spot, where I may lie and bathe
In the summer heat, the ice is kind, and the water soothes my skin
I wish to know of your family, of your lineage and kin.”
“My family goes back many years, with glories of past ages
Our battles and deeds are greatly praised in the words of bards and sages
My house has wealth, and land aplenty, and has been host to the king
My noble kin are the Whitetree line, and here I hold their ring.”
“I see you are of good birth, and are a comely man
And you have seen me naked, surely by some higher plan
Now that this has happened, I hope to give my hand
With my father’s word this coming autumn I shall wear a wedding band.”
And with the reaping of the corn, in his house they wed
They said the vows and sang the prayers, and the wedding-words were said
The girl was happy in his house, with fine food and raiment fair
Her husband took her to the wedding-bed, eager as fire and gentle as air
One thing lingered in her mind, the many nights he was away
And when the bed filled her with child, the dread grew by the day
She travelled ‘round the house and fields, but no mistress was to be seen
She read through all his letters, but for fidelity they were snow-clean
Then she opened his secret chest, and released a scream of fright
For in it the lay the pelt of the wolf, dread singer of the night
Her husband was a wolf-man, occult terror of wood and glen
Who clad in fur to become a wolf, and in clothes to turn back again
She would not live with such a monster, so her maid was told
To take the pelt and bury it as deep as the veins of gold
Her knight returned to their room that eve, and searched for his precious hide
He could not find it in his chest, or in the saddle at his horse’s side
He turned to his wife and howled at her, to see if she knew where it lay
She sat upon the bed in tears, and poured out her heart that day
“My love, my dear one, never would I sleep well
If at night you turned into a raging beast of Hell
So I took your skin and hid it, for I was deeply afraid
Of what you might do to me, to our servants and our babe.”
Upon a knee the knight went down, and kneeled before his bride
“I will never wear that skin again, and in a wolf’s body no more I’ll ride
I shall bury it down and deeply, let the silver turn to rust
For you are my wife, my one beloved, and in me you should trust.”
“And from you I’ll never steal again, not even the driest crust
For you are my husband, my one beloved, and in you I should trust.”

ADWD – Jon II
"A mother can't leave her son, or else she's cursed forever. Not a son. We saved him, Sam and me. Please. Please, m'lord. We saved him from the cold."
"Men say that freezing to death is almost peaceful. Fire, though … do you see the candle, Gilly?"
She looked at the flame. "Yes."
"Touch it. Put your hand over the flame."
Her big brown eyes grew bigger still. She did not move.
"Do it." Kill the boy. "Now."
[...]
Gilly lowered her hand. An inch. Another. When the flame licked her flesh, she snatched her hand back and began to sob.
"Fire is a cruel way to die. Dalla died to give this child life, [...]. You saved your own boy from the ice. Now save hers from the fire."
AFFC – Samwell I
Gilly had appeared, the child bundled in her arms. Beneath her hood her eyes were red from crying.
AFFC – Samwell II
Sam tried to keep a brave face on him, for Gilly's sake if little else. She had never seen the sea before. […] As Blackbird slipped away from shore the girl began to tremble, and big salt tears rolled down her cheeks. "Gods be good," Sam heard her whisper. Eastwatch vanished first, and the Wall grew smaller and smaller in the distance, until it finally disappeared. The wind was coming up by then. The sails were the faded grey of a black cloak that had been washed too often, and Gilly's face was white with fear.
[…]
No happy choice. Sam thought of all the trials that he and Gilly suffered, Craster's Keep and the death of the Old Bear, snow and ice and freezing winds, days and days and days of walking, the wights at Whitetree, Coldhands and the tree of ravens, the Wall, the Wall, the Wall, the Black Gate beneath the earth. What had it all been for? No happy choices and no happy endings.
He wanted to scream. He wanted to howl and sob and shake and curl up in a little ball and whimper. He switched the babes, he told himself. He switched the babes to protect the little prince, to keep him away from Lady Melisandre's fires, away from her red god. If she burns Gilly's boy, who will care? No one but Gilly.

Season 1, Episode 8: Bugs
Don't have a lot to say, but I liked this episode.
< It didn't start with screaming for once!
< I really liked all the character development with Sam and Dean and talking about their dad. It's so obvious how much Sam and John love each other, but they are both scarred from things that happened to them and things they did to each other, and they are absolutely crap at showing that love.
< It really hurts my heart when Dean says, "Dad was never disappointed in you." Because he really does believe that he was the one John was always disappointed in. While Sam believes the opposite. It just hurts.
< But it was so good to see some of Sam's heart heal in seeing Matt and his dad build a better relationship. And I think Dean's too, no matter how much he might roll his eyes.
< Also Joe Whitetree calling Dean out? "You know who starts a sentence with 'truth is'? Liars?" (Sam getting straight to the point.) "I like him. He's not a liar." 😂😂😂
< Also Sam drove the car a bunch in this episode!

so, in nightreign, the whitetree we’ve seen glimpses of in trailers is 2 trunks spiralling around a divine tower… the divine towers house meteorites and some strange energy, and have a two fingers capping them. the tower, the spiral tree now, the structure of “two pillars” at the top that grant benediction— this seems very enir ilim, but divine towers are built by a different culture and i can’t know when the fingers were placed there, they currently serve the golden order but are completely ancient…
otherwise the towers are capped with golden meteorite in the eight circles around a single one, which evokes the flame of ruin symbol. the design of the stone and soft carving and scale also makes it look like a giant construction. there seems to solidified slag on the towers as well, as if magma fell and hardened on them from like a meteor strike or something.
the divine towers are i think copied and re-understood by the hornsent’s tower of enir-ilim, but enir-ilim i think doesn’t *use* the divine towers itself in any way i think, instead the divine towers are centred around the pillar of suppression, which is a much smaller and probably newer structure by marika, used to veil tLoS…

Seventh Invasion, All Mother Plants Defeated
In a horrifying chain of events, five Mother Plants sprouted simultaneously through the world! Military forces responded as fast as possible, and through perseverance and teamwork, all of the Mother Plants were defeated. There were heroes who stood out among the rest, however, the dead is numerous and countless Infected were scattered to the winds. We now honor those we lost in the fighting:
Duke Coriolano Vakki
Dr. Duncan Strangreix-Hakzar
King Ari Seindu
High Witch Rhomari WhiteTree
General Aera Braieforma
Princess Bianca Strangreix
Professor Abram Uchibayashi
Police Chief Akimitsu Chambers
Most of the Sulani Coast Guard were wiped out defending Sulani, countless who had no military experience volunteered their service and paid with their lives. Many rulers and members of the royal family are either dead or missing. The world is now in fear, flocking to where any safety can be found. Sulani, Tomarang and Ravenwood are seeing a sudden influx of refugees, with no way to screen for Infected.
The Strangerville Army is ramping efforts to test and quarantine Infected, as anyone can now be suspected of Infection. More details will come in the next few days. Stay vigilant, report any signs of Infection in your friends, family and neighbors. We must all work together to keep the world safe!

A Clash of Kings First Read - Chapter 13
(POV: Jon II.)
Setting: Whitetree, a wildling village beyond the Wall (Jeor Mormont et al).
Favorite character: Sam! He was just adorable with his ravens, and apparently braver than most men in the party for not growing afraid as they rode deeper into the forest. But I also really liked a philosophical Eddison Tollett.
MVP: Can't really say there's an MVP here, as nothing much happens. Maybe whoever chased the wildlings away? Unless they went willingly...
Things I loved/liked:
The ending. Very ominous, but somehow I cannot wait for them to find the enemy... or for the enemy to find them! Anyway, I'm expecting a big battle now.
Jon and Sam's interaction. I (still) really like their friendship. And Jon admiring Sam for his (sort of) bravery. Also, Sam teaching the ravens how to talk, and them being able to say "snow." Jon might be bitter about it (after all, it's probably reminding him of his status), but I find it somewhat adorable. The way Sam explained it, it was more about snow as in the weather than Snow as in the bastard surname, but maybe he taught it to them thinking of Jon? If so, that's cute!
Eddison Tollett. I know his character is a rather minor one, but I liked his philosophical musings and how he kind of put Jon in his place: "I was born in a house much like this" after Jon declares, "What a dismal place to live." (That's how I interprete it anyway.)
Things I disliked/hated:
It's not so much as something I dislike/hate as something I don't understand: Jon killed the wight with fire, so Mormont probably knows by now that the wildlings would burn their dead to prevent that from happening? Unless he's reasoning that not all dead turn into wights, which... also makes sense.
Um... It's kind of an overall feeling? Because like I said before, nothing much happens. (And yet there's this feeling of ominous dread covering the whole chapter, and I like that, so I'm guessing this argument can't really go here?)
Quotes: Dolorous Edd's "Bad enough to know you're going to come to some awful end without thinking about it aforetime." Because that's very true. And the very last words, aka Jon's thoughts of "Or they will find us" because ominous much?
Thoughts overall: Boring but ominous (how many times did I say that word in this recap, I wonder?).
