I saw a baby garter snake while walking around campus today!!! I’m so happy that it’s finally getting warm enough for the snakes to come back out where I live! This was my first snake of the season and he was so photogenic. For a while I was scared I’d have to move him because he was near a place that gets a lot of foot traffic and I didn’t want him getting stepped on, but luckily he went into a nearby thicket and was safe. I love handling snakes but I didn’t really want to get musked on and smell like poop for the rest of the day.
Went out in the rain to get a pic of my voodoo lily. I thought she had died over winter but is coming back strong! A teeny anole was curled up right next to it. Gonna need to move the lily to its own pot again when it stops raining!
Look closely - a typically-sized Midwestern turtle sits next to its foot.
It must be close to its size-limit, with a possible 30-inch diameter shell and weighing well in excess of 100 pounds. It’s possible that this beast is 40+ years old.
Sometimes people think that we dont get lizards in the UK, which is understandable because we only have like 3 species. This is the common lizard and its easiest to see them on baking hot days near rocks and pavements
Me and my bf just helped a Florida Softshell Turtle (Apalone ferox) cross the road in his neighborhood.
They have really long necks so you have to hold them from the back so you don’t get bit, but this beauty was surprisingly calm while we moved her towards the pond that she was heading to. There’s a couple ponds in community and it was trying to go from one to another but it needed to cross the road but luckily was found by a group of neighbor kids who called my bf to help since he’s known as the reptile guy in his neighborhood.
I hope this beautiful girl has a happy life and that she doesn’t need to cross anymore roads or if she does she has someone to help her. 🐢
there's a bigger part of me that takes pride in being Monster to a sick society, but the "reptiles are abhorrent" trope really does get to me sometimes. we are just lil folks
