From July to November 1942, Hans, Schmorell and Graf were forced to take a break from their studies—and their burgeoning activism—to serve as medics on the Eastern Front. There, they witnessed with their own eyes the misery of Jewish prisoners in the Warsaw Ghetto. “Warsaw would sicken me in the long run,” Hans wrote to his parents in July. “Half-starved children sprawl in the street and whimper for bread. … The mood is universally doom-laden.”

Appalled by the violence and injustice they’d witnessed, the friends returned to Munich determined to step up their resistance efforts by distributing leaflets throughout Germany and Austria. Ultimately, the White Rose circulated at least 7,000 leaflets in 16 major cities, from Munich to Frankfurt to Vienna to Berlin, conveying the impression that the group’s membership was widespread, not just a handful of indefatigable students hand-cranking out pamphlets in Munich.

The leaflets were like nothing the Gestapo had ever seen—not rigid ideological tracts aimed at the working classes, but passionate, erudite manifestos that quoted Friedrich Schiller, Plato and Laozi. “The guilt of Hitler and his accomplices goes beyond all measure,” read the group’s fifth leaflet. “Tear up the cloak of indifference you have wrapped around your hearts. Make your decision before it is too late!”

Today, the Scholls are celebrated for their pivotal role as members of the White Rose, a small, clandestine, anti-Nazi resistance group. They joined the activist network after becoming disillusioned with the Hitler Youth, in which they were both leaders as teenagers. Castigating the German middle class for abandoning its Christian values and leadership roles, the White Rose set out to rouse the masses from their “slumber” and encourage passive resistance against the fascist regime.

The White Rose’s core consisted of six University of Munich students—Hans, Sophie, Probst, Alexander Schmorell, Willi Graf and Traute Lafrenz—and a philosophy professor named Kurt Huber. (All except Lafrenz were eventually executed by guillotine.) A loose network of supporters and sympathetic acquaintances aided the group’s resistance efforts by distributing leaflets and providing money to purchase supplies, among other contributions.

By all accounts, the White Rose activists were among the first within Germany to speak out widely against the mass murder of Jews, in their second leaflet in June 1942. Their legendary distribution of flyers at the University of Munich appears to have been the only fundamentally political public protest against Nazism to be staged by Germans during the 12 years of Adolf Hitler’s rule. The last words of the group’s fourth leaflet became its legacy: “We will not be silent. We are your bad conscience. The White Rose will not leave you in peace!”

Eighty years after their executions, the leaders of the White Rose are counted among the greatest Germans of all time. Numerous schools, streets and plazas are named for them, and monuments honoring their activism appear throughout the country. They have been the subject of plays, documentaries and feature films. One of these movies, Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2006 Academy Awards.

Yet two mysteries about the White Rose long bedeviled laypeople and scholars alike: What motivated the 1937 transformation of the teenaged Hans and Sophie from fanatical acolytes of Nazism to passionate anti-Nazis? And why did Hans and his friends choose the “White Rose” as the name of their resistance organization?

The answers to these two questions appear to be interwoven. According to previously ignored Gestapo interrogation transcripts, along with my own subsequent research, anti-gay Nazi policies played a pivotal role in the radicalization of the Scholl siblings, helping to turn them into exemplars of civil courage.

The enormous amount of hate Europeans and Americans have for Arabs is astounding. I can't pinpoint the exact time where this all began, if it's 9/11 or the crusades but anti-arabic and anti-muslim propaganda runs deep in our culture.

I remember back then when in 2014 millions of Arabs had to flee to Germany to escape death and famine the only thing the German media had to say was: "these Arab men are raping our women!!" I was 9 back then. I grew up in a liberal environment yet I can't say that none of this propaganda didn't contaminate my mind.

Do not let yourself be consumed by hate. I'm going to say something controversial: No matter if man, women or child, if bigoted or not, if right-wing or leftist, if religious fundamentalist or atheist, no one deserves to die and especially not to die in a genocidal war. Arab people are our brothers and sisters just like the rest of humanity, yet the only thing people can do when they see an arab is point their fingers and scream the word terrorist at them? How dare you exist? How dare you breathe, eat, wear what you want, mourn your family, be loud, be angry, be sad, be human?

I never thought I would experience a genocide of this scale in my life, knowing that it will be in history books. The thing that hurts the most is that I can't do anything. I'm not a Sophie Scholl, Willi Graf or Aaron Bushnell. I'm just a poor 19-year old. But one thing that we can do is that at least the right side of history will be printed in our history books. I have met other leftist people my age and teachers that I used to admire that do not share that same sentiment.

To all the Arab people: I see you! I stand with you! I will never forget and will always remember.

Rest In Peace, Traute Lafrenz, 103 years 🧡

The last member of German WWII resistance group 'White Rose' died on 06. March

Dying at this proud age, it's special... if we look at her fellows- the famous Sophie and Hans Scholl. Traute was member of the White Rose in Hamburg and Munich where the siblings Scholl went to university.

Nowadays it's hard for us to imagine what a risk it was to help such student founded groups; she was one of the most important members.

Other famous members: Christoph Probst-- Alexander Schmorell, the 'russian soul' and martyr -- Willi Graf and of course Sophie and Hans Scholl

Some of these had tried to help Jews, some had connections with them.

All anti NS regime 'organisations' were important in German history... there was also the military resistance -Stauffenberg but also many other brave people-, churches, socialism/communism, minorities which didn't fit to the new standards...

Die Weiße Rose has always been a big example for me- as well as for m a n y others; Exhibitions and connections with people from their history related places... every single information is golden about this.

I just wish her a beautiful life in heaven and that she meets her old fellows. They were already killed in the times of '42 to '43, when these young persons were in their 20's. Let's pray for everyone who has lost their lives back then, however.

And I'm so happy for Traute from all my heart. I can't express it in words.

This little German sci-fi horror B-movie may have slipped past many a monster kid’s radar. In the film, one crazed scientist gets one-upped by an evil scientist who takes not only the first scientist’s life – reducing his life to a head on a plate – but also uses his discoveries to perform some head-swapping shenanigans. This film is strange, bizarre, weird, silly… yet, oddly entertaining. The Grue-Crew has so many thoughts to share regarding The Head (1959).

At the time of this writing, The Head can be found streaming from the Classic Sci-Fi Movie Channel, the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Tubi, and Dark Matter TV. The film is currently available on disc as The Head (1959) (Die Nackte und der Satan) [Blu-Ray, Reg.A/B/C Import – Germany] from Anolis. 

(NOTE: Currently, all of the streaming options are the American version with roughly five minutes cut from the runtime, music substitutions, and English dubbing as the only language option. The Blu-ray has German and English language and subtitle options, the original music, and a commentary by Tim Lucas. The German language version delivers far more emotional impact to the viewer while the English dubbing comes off as a bit flat with awkward and simplified phrasing. And since the music is one of the attractions for me, the Blu-ray is a far better experience, although a bit pricey. – JLM)

KINDERLIJK VOLWASSEN BIJ DE KUNSTIGE KOSMOTRONIKS CONSTRUCTIES

Kunstenaar en modelbouwer Harry Arling is ongetwijfeld de hedendaagse Leonardo da Vinci. Dat maakt hij kenbaar in een tentoonstelling en bij het verschijnen van een boek. Deze Leo overigens zal zich waarschijnlijk omdraaien in zijn graf, zijn benige vingers aflikken bij de uitgewerkte ideeën van die Groninger beeldbouwer. Nog eigenzinniger en meer vooruitstrevend, maar toch klassiek en antiek ogend. Arling is de vleesgeworden stripfiguur Willie Wortel, waarbij Lampje de filosofie van recycling bijlicht, een aandeel in het plasticvrij maken van de oceaan. Verander de wereld begin bij jezelf moet Harry gedacht hebben, en zet daarbij de kunst in om een voorbeeld te stellen. Een toonbeeld van hoe onder veel meer koffiebekers en tapedispensers een nieuwe toepassing kunnen krijgen. En dat het dan niet als handvaardige modelbouw wordt gezien, maar als creatieve kunstuiting is mooi meegenomen. De verspilling van de consumptiemaatschappij zet hij om in iets fantastisch, wondermachines geconstrueerd uit afval.

De meeste van de bedenksels van die kunstenaar en uitvinder Da Vinci hebben dan nooit werkelijk gewerkt, gereden of gevlogen omdat ze niet zijn gebouwd. Het zijn tekeningen op papier gebleven. De ruimtelijke objecten van Arling mogen dan de tekentafel gepasseerd zijn deze zullen ook niet werken, rijden of vliegen maar zijn wel degelijk gebouwd. Het zijn statische objecten, die op dit moment tot eind februari geluidloos in de ruimte van Galerie MUGA uitgestald staan. In die tot zalen omgebouwde lokalen zie ik het werk van Harry Arling voor de tweede keer. Zijn Kosmotroniks, robotachtige wezens die vooral wensen te zweven maar aan de grond genageld blijven, zijn Heerenveen nog eens aangevlogen. En andermaal met succes. Dit keer zijn het minder grote objecten dan voorheen getoond, maar nog even minutieus in opbouw en afwerking. Gemaakt voor de kosmos, klaar om naar de sterren te gaan, de einders van het heelal te zoeken en het zwarte gat in te duiken.

Het lijkt kinderspel in de zin van dat er een grote mate van fantasie bij komt kijken om de objecten te beleven. Voor de maker is het een groot avontuur om van die afgedankte mixer of föhn een ware driedimensionale kijkplaat te maken, een ruimtelijk fantasievol voorwerp. Voor de beschouwer van zijn werk is het een belevenis. Met de neus dicht er bovenop zie ik pas hoe ingenieus de kunstenaar te werk gaat om zijn bedachte belevenis te doorleven. Zoals ik bij de eerdere uitstalling schreef zou je verwachten dat alle machines gaan werken wanneer ik de ruimte binnenstap. Dat er ergens een sensor zit die mij registreert en daarop de voertuigen, vaartuigen en vliegtuigen in beweging zet. Maar nee, ik doorbreek geen infrarode straal, mijn komst wordt niet anders dan door de baliemedewerkster gezien. En zij heeft ook geen knopje bij de kassa die leven brengt in het levenloze materiaal. Toen dacht ik ook dat om middernacht, wanneer elke ruimte donker is en verlaten, de objecten tot leven komen en MUGA vullen met gezoem en geratel. Opvliegen en rondvliegen wanneer niemand kijkt, doorrijden en rondrijden, om klokslag twaalf uur dan is alles in beweging. Het lijkt een fantasie¸ maar wie heeft gecontroleerd dat het niet zo is?

Overdag tijdens openingsuren blijft het ijzig stil tussen de witte muren, maar de aanblik van de getoonde Kosmotroniks schijnt toch een wonderlijke warmte in de ruimte te brengen – hoewel het mijn enthousiasme zal zijn dat op stoom komt. Het is bewonderenswaardig en kunstig bovendien hoe de kunstenaar elk onderdeel tot in het kleinste detail heeft weten vorm te geven. Warm word ik daarom van binnen en mijn hart gaat sneller kloppen, want ik was vroeger ook zo een verwoed modelbouwer. Het meest aangename van een modelspoorbaan vond ik de bouw van de omgeving en de bebouwing daarin. Ik heb heel wat huisjes, kerkjes en molentjes in elkaar geplakt. Altijd naar voorbeeld met de in de doos mee verpakte handleiding als hulpmiddel, dat wel.

Niet zoals Harry Arling die in ieder voorwerp een kosmotronik ziet, een bouwsel als complexe constructie om er de fantasie op los te laten. Elk omhulsel dat dienst heeft gedaan en achteloos wordt weggegooid kan aanzet zijn een kunstwerk te knutselen. Plastic bekers en flessen, speelgoed waterpistolen, haardrogers, onderdelen van mixers en kruimeldieven, inhalatoren en tape dispensers, plastic paaseieren en kerstballen, je kunt het zo gek niet bedenken. Geef het Harry in handen en het inspireert hem tot een object. En die opsomming betreft dan nog enkel middelen voor het grote werk, die de vorm in grote lijnen aangeven. De kleine details vergen aandacht en concentratie. Radertjes en schroefjes, draadjes en wieltjes. En daarna krijgen de kunstige objecten, die het vervoer als thema hebben, chauffeurs, piloten en machinisten in de vorm van kleine figuurtjes toegewezen. En laat ik me leiden door die mannetjes, kruip ik in hun kunststof huid als het ware, dan vlieg ik zo naar de sterren – to infinity and beyond.

Naast de echte bouwsels in de tentoonstelling kan ik thuis genieten en me vermaken met het boek KOSMOTRONIKS dat door KOMMA, no ordinary publisher, van de maaksels van Harry Arling is uitgegeven. Daarin is enigszins ouder werk te bewonderen daar het een overzicht is tot het jaar 2021. Objecten waarvan ik eerder onderdelen in levende lijve zag in Galerie MUGA. De fotograaf heeft voor het boek naast dat hij de volledige maaksels belicht dicht op de huid van de constructies gezeten. Zo zodat ik als plaatjeskijker in het boek het geheel kan beschouwen maar ook interessante details van de modellen te zien krijg. Dan valt het ingenieuze maakwerk nog beter op en wordt de creatieve kunst inzichtelijk gemaakt.

In KOSMOTRONIKS krijgt ieder object een beschrijving mee. Een kort verhaal waardoor de vinding een fantasievolle levendige invulling krijgt. Bij ieder object namelijk krijgen de bemanningsleden namen. Zij zijn de bouwers en bestuurders van het ding. Arling geeft zijn vinding daarmee uit handen aan die kleine figuurtjes, die levende wezens zijn geworden door de fantasie van de kunstenaar. Is hij God en zijn zij de schepsels in zijn schepping? In ieder geval hebben deze mannetjes een voornemen en een doel voor ogen, en willen dat gerealiseerd krijgen door een voertuig dat kan vliegen, varen of rijden uit te vinden en te construeren. Dat is het verhaal. En dat gebouwde ding krijgt in de tekst tevens een persoonlijkheid toegemeten. De makers communiceren met hun maaksel. Die extra dimensie gaat in de tentoonstelling verloren, dus het boek is een must voor de bezoeker om zich volledig in de materie te kunnen inleven. Daardoor komt de kunst van Harry Arling tot leven. En is de beschouwer voor een moment een volwassen kind ofwel kinderlijk volwassen.

Früher im Mittelalter, da waren Monarchien mal wichtig für die Menschen. Hatten doch die Monarchen, egal ob diese sich König Willi Zwo oder Graf Raffzahl nannten, das Sagen in ihrem Reich sowohl über Gesetz und Strafe. Sie bestimmten, was man als Steuer oder Zehnten zu zahlen hat, welches die bösen Ländereien sind, gegen die man in Krieg zu ziehen hat. Das hat sich mittlerweile gewandelt. In den meisten europäischen Ländereien sind, so man sich noch eine Monarchie hält, diese zu Winkeaugusten mit Soap-Opera-Charakter degradiert worden. Wirklich interessant sind diese eigentlich nur noch für Menschen, die sich das Aschenbrödel auch in der 487ten Wiederholung noch ansehen, als ob dieses eine Neuverfilmung sei. Umso mehr verwundert es mich, dass ein Ex-Prinz bei den Medien der Mittelpunkt des Weltgeschehens zu sein scheint, obwohl es genug dringlichere Probleme gibt. Scheinbar ziehen die Toten in der Ukraine oder bei anderen Konflikten nicht mehr genug Quote. Leider ist es aber ebenso ein Beispiel für die Perversität der Medien. Selbst wenn Du nicht mal den Hauch des Interesses an dem hast, was ein Hollywood-Prinz mit seiner Schauspielfrau da verzapfen, es wird Dir an allen Ecken und Enden unter die Nase gerieben. Ich halte es für fragwürdig zu wissen, wo ein Spross defloriert wurde und was für Deformationen seine Gewürzgurke hat. Genauso wie es mich nicht interessiert, wie viele Menschen er im Dienste der Armee seiner Majestät gekillt hat und wie sehr sich die royale Familie liebt oder eben nicht. Nur leider weiß ich es, ohne es zu wollen. So ziemlich alle Teile der Medien haben da fleißig mit gearbeitet, sei es mit eindeutigem Bildmaterial, Überschriften, die fleißig einen in die Timelines geflutet werden oder dass man diesen Nonsens bis in die Hauptnachrichtensendungen reinschwappen ließ. Egal wo Du hinkommst, nur noch dieses eine Thema. Wenn man mal davon absieht, dass ein Sänger, der mehr mit Informationen um sein Familienleben Schlagzeilen macht, als mit seinem Gesang, meinte mitteilen zu müssen, dass es reicht und er es satt sei auf 100.000 € zu warten. Ich frage mich, wo wir mittlerweile hingekommen sind, dass so wirkliche Nebensächlichkeiten, die früher in der sogenannten Regenbogen-Presse verschwunden sind, mittlerweile wichtiger zu sein scheint, wie ob ein nicht unerheblicher Teil der Menschen in diesem Land sich noch die Heizkosten leisten können, dass die Klimaveränderungen in Teilen der Welt das Leben bedrohen oder das man nicht in der Lage ist Konflikte friedlich zu beenden. Mich interessiert nicht, ob ein Ronaldo einem Messi, gleich auch immer welcher Art, irgendwelche Glückwünsche zukommen lässt oder warum der Flieger eines Stars den australischen Dschungel umfliegt und nicht landen darf. Fragwürdig finde ich auch dabei, wie diese Informationen einem zukommen. Heute bekommst Du die Nachricht vom Münchener Merkur in die Timeline, morgen 1:1 vom Soester Anzeiger, einige Tage später von der Frankfurter Rundschau oder der HNA. Alles Medien eines großen Verlagshauses. Betreibe ich mehrere Blogs und veröffentliche dort, weil es ausnahmsweise mal thematisch passt, ein und denselben Artikel in allen Blogs, muss ich damit rechnen, dass mir die Social Media Accounts von den Netzwerken zugemacht werden. Dort - sind ja auch zahlende Kunden - ist das alles OK. Mittlerweile ist es so, dass ich nervende Anbieter permanent aus meiner Timeline verbanne. Auch Freunde, die glauben, dass diese Themen wichtig sind, verschwinden erstmal für 30 Tage aus der Timeline. Fällt es danach auf, dass sich nichts ändert, verschwinden auch diese aus meiner Timeline. Ich habe es satt, meinen Alltag mit Sachen zu belasten, in denen ich keinerlei Relevanz sehe und an denen ich auch kein Interesse habe.
