Hunh, I've only ever heard soft g for margarine, hegemony, and algae, had no clue there were those who used hard g for those
#i have no idea how regex is pronounced#nor doge#the only person I've ever heard say it out loud pronounced it as if French#with an ezh#no idea if that's normal or not#i read it with a hard g#since it comes from dog#and i don't even know what digoxin is#though only a hard g would make sense with that spelling?#oh hunh#looked out up and it's from a contraction of digitoxin#so soft g would be etymological?#should've kept the i as a silent letter to indicate the soft g pronunciation

making a post about this because i keep forgetting how it works and i feel like the appendix doesn't explain it well so:
-ar endings go like:
mer []ar / min []in / merrem []aran
-ezh endings go like:
mer []ezh / min []ezhen / merrem []ezho
-a endings go like:
mer []a / min []eth* / merrem []o
barizheise surnames seemingly do not inflect for gender, so nadeian is merrem vizhenka and not merrem vizhenko
*this doesn't actually appear in the names of any known characters, but based on the appendix it should be the correct form for unmarried women eg. if csevet had a sister she would be min aisaveth
#for the distribution of these endings the appendix says#-ar/in/aran is the most common#-ezh/ezhen/ezho is used in the west by 'herders'#and -a/eth/o is used in the south and is somewhat old fashioned and lower class#look i made something#the goblin emperor#also the note about barizheise surnames obviously does not apply to all goblins#since we know very well that there are plenty of part-goblins in the ethuveraz with ethuverazheise names

Of the modern Latin character set, I think "3" is my favorite character, both aesthetically and in terms of how it feels to write. For similar reasons I'm also a big fan of ȝ, ʒ, and る. ع is surprisingly awkward to write, though. Something about reversing the strokes makes it feel very ungainly, like I'm trying to write with the wrong hand.
#i like ezh a lot more than 3 actually#but you don't get many opportunities for a good ezh these days

finally got home and can show the full passage! this is page 486 in my copy (the first mass market edition published in march 2015, by its copyright page)
Wait why doesn't csevet's second name end in a family suffix what does this mean and have I completely misunderstood elvish naming conventions
#my additions#this does seem to imply to me that -ada could theoretically be added to the -a and -ezh names?#so there could be such a thing as an aisavada or a telimada#although politically i doubt either of those families would be considered worth mentioning#the goblin emperor

The Portfolio hardbound is definitely Ekko’s calculations for his Z-Drive and Jinx got her hands on it!
There’s a lot of emphasis on 3 or the Latin “ezh” symbol. Reverses time for 3 minutes? 3 seconds??

English doesn’t have a letter for ʃ
I don’t want to use to ʃ bc I have to switch keyboards if on mobile and also it’s distracting because it’s not a usually seen letter in English
Don’t want to use because I do that a lot
Kind of want to use the long s, but I can’t type that on mobile
If I use a diacritic I might forget what it means
Leaving me with *drumroll*: ß (which does not make the ʃ sound but is a convenient to type letter and it is made of the long s and the ezh (ʒ) so it’s a win win)
Basically I wish it was easier to type old letters on standard keyboards (long s, insular g (assuming you aren’t in a font that defaults the g to an insular g such as Uncial Antiqua), wynn, ezh, round r, etc.). They’re such cool letters and I would love to be able to type them on mobile, but I can’t and for some of them the font support is abysmal.

what are those strange symbols?
here's a list of most of the symbols that you may not recognize:
ʔ - the glottal stop. unlikely you'll see this one since I won't be transcribing super narrowly, but this symbol represents a closure in the throat that stops the flow of air.
ŋ - engma. this symbol represents the -ng sound at the end of -ing words.
θ - theta. this symbol represents the unvoiced th sound in words like three or thick.
ð - eth. this symbol represents the voiced th sound in words like this or there.
ʃ - esh. this symbol represents the sh sound in words like shower or shriek.
ʒ - ezh. this symbol represents the zh sound, like at the beginning of the word genre, or in the middle of the word vision.
ɹ - upside down r. this symbol represents the "american" or or the "rhotic" r. think of a pirate saying "arr"--that's this sound.
ɪ - small cap i. this symbol represents the short i sound in words like in or ick.
ɛ - epsilon. this symbol represents the short e sound in words like egg or extra.
æ - ash. this symbol represents the short a sound in words like ask or actor.
ʊ - hook. this symbol represents the oo sound in words like foot or book.
ʌ - wedge. this symbol represents the uh sound in words like strut or truck.
ɔ - open o. this symbol represents the o sound in the word or (and in some varieties of english, the sound in thought or caught).
ɑ - script a. this symbol represents the o sound in the word lot or the a sound in the word palm.
e͡ɪ - the "face" diphthong.
a͡ʊ - the "mouth" diphthong.
a͡ɪ - the "price" diphthong.
ɔ͡ɪ - the "choice" diphthong.
o͡ʊ - the "goat" diphthong.
ə - schwa. this symbol represents all unstressed vowels. I will try my best to use this for all of them, even if it could be argued that the sound is actually ʊ, ɪ, ɛ, or ʌ.
ˈ - stress marker. when this symbol appears before a syllable, you should stress that syllable.
̩ - syllabic marker. when this symbol appears under another symbol, it indicates that that sound is acting as a vowel (ex. "free" [fɹi] vs "furry" [fɹ̩i]). the presence of this symbol also generally insinuates that the symbol it appears under does not normally act as a vowel.*
͡ - tie bar. when this symbol appears over two other symbols, it indicates that they should be pronounced together. in english, you'll usually see it over diphthongs or t͡s. it also looks rather janky sometimes. my apologies.
ː - long. this symbol doesn't really have a name, but it indicates when the symbol preceding it should be long. this isn't used much in serious english transcription since english doesn't differentiate between long and short sounds, but I may use it for fun :3
*I am choosing to represent the syllabic r with ɹ̩ instead of ɝ and ɚ. I think it's less confusing and easier to write with my ipa keyboard.
