Liza (1888-1923), timid, sensitive and emotionally unstable from childhood, was a tragic figure. She lived a life far removed from reality and refined to the point of pathology, and ultimately committed suicide. With a great deal of sensitivity, Wojtkiewicz captures the sadness and pensiveness expressed by the sitter's face. The absence of eye contact with the viewer magnifies the impression of the inward isolation of a woman sequestered in her own world and indifferent to all that is outside.
