a lot of operas exhibit the femme fatale trope, which…i know was created by men and is technically misogynistic because it demonizes female sexuality. however…girl kill boy because girl to sexy and powerful and boy inferior…kinda based.
not to mention these roles look so fun to play, like Salome? she dances naked and then makes out with a severed head, sounds lit as fuck if you ask me.

i feel like for the rest of my life i will be walking around totally normal and then periodically, i will be absolutely brained with a metaphorical anvil falling off the side of a building that represents the absolute bafflement i have towards modern adaptations of sherlock holmes and their treatment of irene adler. bbc's most recent adaptation in particular.
im so sorry. please repeat. she was stupid u say??? and i'm sorry, IN LOVE with him u say??????
i'm a feminist so i think women are capable of being in love and also of being stupid. they can do anything they put their minds to ofc ❤️. but this is too far even for me.
it's just that i can't understand why you would choose to write a narrative that is more mysoginistic than the source material when the source material was written in 1891.
was it intentional? did they somehow not pick up on the implications? was it random?
i can't fathom it. it keeps me awake.
#sherlock holmes#irene adler#bbc sherlock#guy ritchie sherlock holmes#that one noir holmes set in the 40s?#idk i might have made that up#you know what actually i'm thinking about the guy richie one now too#GOD!!!!!!!#men should me shot in the streets for what they did to my girl#it's just the complete inability to imagine her as being powerful in any way that does not relate to being underestimated as a woman#which is not to say that this is not an interesting thread to explore in a more thorough character study#but!#the notion that who she is as a character is the unique utilization of feminity and sexuality to obstruct the power of men#thereby making her own power a power only in reaction#does such a disservice to the core of her initial character and the point that she made#and also this relates to the obsession with adler as a villain#because adler isn't necessarily smarter than holmes - she totally may be - but that doesn't actually matter#what matters is that she outsmarts him#and she wins at the game he plays#she tails him - she disguises herself and isn't recognized - she preempts his actions through logical analysis (she takes his role)#and equally important - she holds the moral high ground she protects the vulnerable#so many of the cases holmes takes on deal with the exploitation of women by society - motherhood marriage reputation gendered labor#this is a case where holmes has become the perpetrator of a crime he would usually work to prevent or avenge#adler takes up his role where he has failed terribly to do so - as a result her power within this narrative is identical to his#it doesn't come from her gender or even necessarily from her intelligence (though these are important traits)#narratively speaking at least - she wins because she deserves to and her morality gives her power#it is that power which is always what i think is important about sherlock holmes when he lives up to it#to me he never truely wins by being smart - he only ever wins by being kind and wanting people to be safe and treated fairly#ALSO WHERE IS HER HUSBAND WHO SHE LOVES AND WHO RESPECTS HER YOU FIENDS!!!!!! she could never love holmes! she is loved by a better man#sorry!!!

joe bob on men, women, and chain saws -- possibly my favorite book review ever. love his ass <33
transcript under the cut
"Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In" for 12/18/92
cutline: Berkeley professor Carol Clover, author of "Men, Women and Chain Saws," may be the first person with a Ph.D. ever to watch 200 slasher flicks BY CHOICE.
By Joe Bob Briggs
Drive-In Movie Critic of Grapevine, Texas
For about ten years now, I've been getting flack from various organizations of feminists, fundamentalists, mad mamas and psycho college professors, claiming that the movies I write about--that is, the three B's, Blood, Breasts and Beasts--are sick and demeaning and twisted and perverted.
Of COURSE they are. Why do you think I watch em?
But there's other stuff they say that is NOT true. For example:
1. Slasher movies are demeaning because they celebrate violence against women.
I never understood this one, because I never noticed a single movie in which more women were killed than men, AND in 99 per cent of them, the ONLY person who survives is a woman.
2. Hard-core horror flicks cause crime.
If this is true, the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department should have a posse stationed outside my trailer house 24 hours a day, because NOBODY has watched more hard-core horror flicks than I have. Any day now I could go off the deep end and start flinging hatchets at old ladies.
3. Horror flicks are a way for rednecks (like me) to act out weird violent fantasies.
In other words, all of us out here in the boonies are like the cannibal family in "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." We really WOULD like to be munching on tourists. Otherwise, why would we laugh and hoot at the screen when Leatherface's family does it?
Anyhoo, I've talked till I'm blue in the face about this stuff. I've gone to seminars, challenged the president of the National Organization of Women to a nude mud-wrestling match, faced off against that shrewd fundamentalist, Dr. Thomas Radecki, head of the National Coalition Against TV Violence. But nobody ever listens, because it's "just Joe Bob."
In other words, I'm too pitiful.
So I wanna say something here, and I want you to listen REAL carefully. I'm about to tell you about a book written by a Berkeley professor. This is hard for me. Large parts of my identity depend on HATING everything that comes out of Berkeley. But I like this book so much that I almost don't even wanna review it, because what if everybody says "Oh, don't read THAT. JOE BOB LIKES IT!"
But it gets lonely out here. So here goes.
"Men, Women and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film" is written by Carol J. Clover, Professor of Scandinavian and Comparative Literature at the University of California at Berkeley.
Whew! I'm already exhausted. Carol, next time, when you write a book, study titles like "Jaws" and "It." It's easier on all of us.
Anyhow, I'm not gonna try to analyze this whole book, because a lot of it, frankly, is over my head. (You scoff?) But it's basically about three kinds of flicks--slasher movies, possession films like "The Exorcist," and rape-revenge films like "I Spit On Your Grave." In fact, I'm pretty sure this is the first serious book in the history of the world to do a complete analysis of the PLOT of "I Spit On Your Grave."
But, from my selfish point of view, I want you to know a few things Professor Carol decided after watching about 200 of these movies:
1. Slasher movies are told FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE WOMAN! In fact, the "Final Girl"--or, as I call her, the Jamie Lee Curtis Girl--is so much a part of the slasher film that the writer doesn't have any choice. You've GOT to have a Final Girl, and the Final Girl HAS TO BE A GIRL.
2. Since 99 per cent of the audience at slasher movies is MALE, this means that all those men are IDENTIFYING WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF THE WOMAN! They're experiencing the movie THROUGH A WOMAN'S BODY! ... In other words, the OPPOSITE of what the feminist censors have been saying for umpteen jillion years now.
3. Jason and Leatherface are actually FEMALES DISGUISED AS MALES. Kind of a transvestite deal. Think about it. Aren't these guys always real screwed up sexually? Don't they always have trouble DECIDING what they are? It's a tradition that continues right up through Jame Crumb, the psycho killer in "Silence of the Lambs." So the original criticism of these movies--that the killers are always male, and the principal victims always female--is turned upside down.
3. The real villains in horror movies are MALE REDNECKS. "The rednecks have replaced the redskins," she says. In the old westerns, any Indian who came on screen was ASSUMED TO BE VIOLENT AND HATEFUL AND SAVAGE. Today, any redneck who comes on the screen is assumed to be violent and hateful and savage.
4. "I Spit On Your Grave," which has been called the most disgusting film ever made (by Eggbert and Siskel), and which has been banned from cable TV for 15 years, is actually told from a female point of view, so that the audience identifies with the ultimate triumph of the woman over the leering rapists. (As I've always said, what male could ever watch the bathtub scene and think the movie is in FAVOR of violence against women? When I see that scene, I can't walk straight for a week.)
5. "The Accused" and "Thelma & Louise" are both watered-down versions of "I Spit On Your Grave." And "Silence of the Lambs" is just another version of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre."
You think I'm oversimplifying this deal?
Yeah, okay, sure. Probly. I'm probly gonna get a letter from the whole goldang Berkeley faculty, saying "You ignorant yahoo, that's NOT what it means."
But right now, today, after reading this book, I feel pretty good about it. Makes me think there's some hope. Makes me think some smart people will get their hands on it and become dumb like me.
Hundreds of dead bodies. No breasts. Academic Fu. "Men, Women and Chain Saws," published by--oh my God!--Princeton University Press.
Four stars.
Joe Bob says check it out.

Me, aged 5. Spoken to my extremely Catholic grandmother, matriarch of the family, who had crosses and pictures of saints hanging in every room of the house: [little, uncannily-enunciated voice] “Grandma, when your church gets destroyed in Armageddon, you can come to our kingdom hall!”
#exjw#ex cult#I’m overly-conscious of how I speak now; but as a child I was about as blunt as a sledgehammer#Yeah my dad got SLAMMED for that one#There was no mistaking what I said because I spoke like a little adult#I was… something. Cute but weird and kind of manipulative.#At that age I enjoyed creeping out adult men in public by intensely staring at them#only adult men; not women#I also pushed boys down the slide and called them “scaredy-cat” until they agreed with me that they were cowards#I planned out in my head one time that my dad was going to walk into the living room with coffee in his hand#so if I scared him at just the right moment; he’d jolt and coffee would spill all over the floor#So I tested my hypothesis and it worked.#My goal was to get him to spill the coffee#I was around four or five but with the calculation of a serial killer (which isn’t saying much because serial killers are dumb)#I watched ET and wanted to see if I could hide in plain sight in my basket of stuffed animals#So I just waited in there very patiently until my dad went looking for me. Held my eyes open without blinking and remained very still#He walked in… looked right at me but didn’t see me; walked out. Walked back in#This time he saw me and got the crap scared out of him when he realized I was right there in front of him the whole time#But I never went into anything to prank anyone… I wasn’t in it for humor; I wanted to be smarter and more powerful than people#if only for a second#I wanted to see if I could come up with a plan involving other people and have those people do what I wanted them to do#But you see I was so sweet 90% of the time that no one thought anything of it — or even noticed what I was doing in some cases#Fortunately I grew out of doing that kind of thing without sufficient cause#But I still do enjoy messing with people from time to time if they REALLY deserve it#or benignly… I like it when people cry or get squeamish in reaction to my artistic work or acting or singing#The feeling of someone eating out of the palm of my hand creatively is great#Love it

sometimes I wonder why all famous internet women are attractive, if it's because they are just more confident in sitting in front of a camera or the inherent societal nature of people (women included) is to watch attractive women and their attractiveness is part of what makes them gain popularity even in genres that do not focus on beauty and fashion.
or if it's just cause I'm hella fucking gay

god i need the algorithm to stop recommending lore olympus to me.
reframing a kidnapping of a woman as romance, and painting her mother as an overbearing shrew rather than rightfully worried and protective, and portraying the kidnapper as sympathetic ... what about my overtly feminist ass makes anyone or any algorithm think i'd enjoy ANY hades/persephone romance retellings.
at this point the only hades and persephone retelling i'm interested in is a retelling that focuses on demeter's love for her daughter. one where persephone's abduction and transition from kore, the maiden, to persephone, goddess of the dead and queen of the underworld, was one where she carries out a revenge fantasy against her abductor... She cannot fully escape the underworld, no; she is death, doomed by the narrative. Underground she will stay for half the year. But she will not subject herself to be trapped with him.
hades dies at dawn; hades dies in the spring light, by persephone's power, and a knife garnished with evergreen thistles. demeter holds him down, and persephone cuts the head. judith slaying holofernes; persephone slaying hades.
#i just cant stand it. i cant stand women simping over abusive and controlling men. begging yall... have some dignity#and i cannot stand women who write stories expecting their love of controlling and abusive men to be validated.#ladies... you dont have to like this........ the only things you have to lose are your chains!!!!!#also i dont like the girls outfits in lore olympus.#i cant be the only one who thinks theyre degrading.#why is dressing that way seen as sexy? and why is 'sexy' for a woman so humiliating and submissive? what would a sexy man wear by contrast?#lets stop treating ourselves as objects. we arent here to be ogled. you arent a sexy lamp. you can stop stop dressing as one.#also no amount of therapy speak in the world can cover up the fact that this is a relationship with untenable power differences#you can talk about boundaries all you like. hes 2000 years old ...and youre 19.#and the fact that all the older folk around her have their worries dismissed by the narrative........... side eye#ladies. sugar daddy and older 'mature' man fantasies are fine whatever. but lets not kid ourselves. theyre not *empowerment* fantasies.#you still dont have agency no matter how much money your boyfriend makes. not as long as it's *his* money.#you still dont have power no matter how powerful your boyfriend is. it's still *his* power.#its not empowerment if YOU arent the one that receives power. i dont care if you FEEL empowered. ARE you? in a material and objective way?#are you truly receiving POWER? or are you receiving gifts? if its in HIS power it isnt in YOURS.#and if you truly believe that there can ever be a relationship where he loves you enough that you have 'power' over him...#you fundamentally misunderstand the risks in dynamics like that. how abusive men can change in an instant.#women throughout history weep for you. please understand that you are not so different from them.#you are not inherently any smarter or better than abused women of the past. they thought they made the best choices they could too.#dont ever put yourself in a relationship with a man where he holds all the power. retain your power.#and when the older women in your life tells you something is a bad idea... run. run as fast as you can. they are trying to protect you.#ill regret posting feminist rants eventually but god i need an outlet

"Quick test tho, replace girlfriend with boyfriend and see if ur still bothered by it." me when i'm 7 and have yet to realize that men and women have a very different place in the social hierarchy because we live in a society
#joke 7-year-olds have already realized this because they're smarter than the person i'm quoting#and because they're boys and girls themselves and are treated differently based on that from the moment they're born lmao#i was reading a book the other day (last month) where boys were already doing the weaponized incompetence thing and girls already cleaned#up after them automatically without being asked BEFORE THE AGE OF 5 like it's bad for us (it was like a sociological study)#and literally the weaponized incompetence thing makes sense it's normal/smart to try to get out of doing something you don't wanna do like#chores and stuff but it's the fact that girls internalize that they have to be the ones who stop doing what they're doing to clean up after#boys/men AS CHILDREN and then keep doing that for the rest of their lives. i'll kill myself#i was raised with just my sister and my mom and my sister is the man of the house in the sense that i'll ask her to do things a certain#way a thousand times because it's better for everyone and she'll always be like yeah you're right and then never do it. and i'm always like#if i actually had to go through that with a partner...and with male partners statistically i probably would#when women make posts like oh look what my boyfriend/husband bought vs what i asked for haha he's so silly...KILL HIM#anyway. my point was you internalize it early enough to realize some of it is off as a kid. so why would you say there's nothing wrong with#saying something about women if the same thing being said about men doesn't offend you#like are you stupid#and like i say: brf slt

I kind of wonder how much of Cameron's reputation as a misogynist comes from people misunderstanding that one Golden Globes joke Tina and Amy made about Kathryn Bigelow knowing about torture because she was married to him for three years. Or people just mistaking him for Joss Whedon.
It’s probably a combination of that stupid joke, whatever idea people have in their head about his ‘maliciousness’ in how demanding he can be to work with, the bizarre reaction to his completely accurate assessment of Wonder Woman, and tbh in some cases it’s just men being jealous and angry that he got to be married to Linda Hamilton who would never look twice at any of them.
