It’s from a page shown in Stuart: The Life & Art of Stuart Sutcliffe. It’s the only other extract I’ve seen besides the other classic quote (check my Spotlight on Johnny tag).

As for my thoughts!!! Oh man. It’s obviously very touching, considering that period of time for John, how hard he tried to guard his pain + softness and how young men dealt with their pain. 

The character is apparently a composite of Stuart and John, and you can probably draw a neat line between who inspired what passages - but that’s the thing, Stuart and John obviously identified with one another, they saw something of themselves in the other, and mental anguish was one of those connections. So when Stuart writes about ‘John’s’ tough home life, we can’t forget that Stuart probably somewhat identified with that too, given his family issues too (which he, as the oldest son who his mother turned to for support, had to carry). But yes, I’m sure it’s also a reference to John absorbing the tension between his family members.

The psychoanalysis part is interesting - I don’t know if Stuart really did seek out a medical student or if he just theorised about what they would say (most likely the latter). It’s all old news for us in terms of analysis of John’s mental state and trauma, but coming from someone who had only known him for a few years when he was so young in the 1950/60s.... :(

In other letters, when Stuart expresses concern over his own mental health and psychosomatic symptoms, he intends to seek psychological treatment. And he did. John obviously lost so much when Stuart died, including a role model and someone who accepted and empathised with his struggle.
