World Gorilla Day creates the opportunity for people all over the world to come together in celebrating gorillas, and more importantly, taking action to protect gorillas in the wild.

2017 was the inaugural year for World Gorilla Day and it also marked the 50th anniversary of the Karisoke Research Center, operated by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Established by Dian Fossey, Karisoke is the longest running gorilla field study site dedicated to the conservation, protection and study of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. There are many great organizations and individuals dedicated to fighting for their survival, but greater awareness and investment are essential to gaining ground for gorillas.

World Gorilla Day strives to be a rallying point for bolstering appreciation and action for these great apes.

This year, we are once again inviting ALL to answer the call for gorillas: Individuals, organizations and conservationists of all kinds are invited to join the World Gorilla Day celebration on September 24 to help give a voice to one of our closest relatives.

It's September 24th, 🦍 World Gorilla Day. This worldwide celebration commemorates the day in 1967 that Dr. Dian Fossey established the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. Karisoke, which is now run by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, is dedicated to the study, conservation, and protection of gorillas and their habitats. Dr. Fossey was an American zoologist who lived from 1932 to 1985. She spent much of her life in Africa and became the world's leading authority on the mountain gorilla. 🎥 Hollywood turned her bestselling book, "Gorillas in the Mist," into a blockbuster film starring Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Fossey.

There are many great organizations and individuals who are dedicated to fighting for the gorilla's survival. All four subspecies of gorillas – the Cross River gorilla, Grauer’s gorilla, mountain gorilla, and western lowland gorilla – are critically endangered because of illegal poaching, civil unrest, disease, and habitat destruction.

The mountain gorilla is the most critically endangered of them all, with only around 800 left in the wild. They’re found within high-altitude mountain and bamboo forests in just two isolated groups – one in the Virunga volcanoes – spanning the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and one in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, contiguous with DRC’s Sarambwe Nature Reserve. Mountain gorillas are completely vegetarian, feeding on leaves, shoots, and stems. They live in groups of several females with their young and one dominant adult "silverback" male – easily identified by his huge size, regal demeanor, and a patch of silver hair on his back.

As luck would have it, it’s #WorldGorillaDay ✍️🦍. So I decided to sit down for 6 hours and draw myself this beast. Was kind of a blur. I have a very soft spot for Gorillas and it’s all down to none other than King Kong. Imagine seeing that 3 hour long cinematic masterpiece from Peter Jackson as a 10 year old. Today is World Gorilla Day, and that means something special to us at WorldwideXplorer. We began offering gorilla hiking safari tours to Uganda and Rwanda, where you can hike to see groups of habituated gorillas, in 2014. I went on our first ever safari to this region and had the most delightful time observing and admiring these gentle giants of the misty mountains in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the Virunga Mountains to name a couple of places.. They were so much more calm than I would have ever pictured. Though the hike to get to them can be daunting, it’s definitely worthwhile.

We also want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the wonderful organizations that are working to preserve and help these creatures. When we were in Rwanda, we visited the Gorilla Doctors, wildlife veterinarians who do an amazing job monitoring and caring for the gorillas with as little human intervention as necessary (but they will intervene when required). They’re one of the main reasons why gorilla numbers are increasing! Hats off as well to the relatively new Ellen Degeneres Wildlife Fund which is also helping gorilla conservation efforts.

With a little bit of effort comes a lot of hope!
