2019, a year in review: Superlative Edition
-Gareth Bill
Athlete of the year:  Lamar Jackson - QB Baltimore Ravens.  HM: Kawhi Leonard - SF Toronto/LA
Lamar Jackson came out of nowhere to light the league on fire in 2019 breaking Michael Vick’s all-time record for rushing yards by a Quarterback and redefining the position in the process.  From his five touchdown performance in Miami to being the assumed MVP, there wasn’t a week where Lamar Jackson didn’t dominate headlines and he continues to show superiority as Baltimore has secured the Number 1 seed in the AFC.  Honorable mention goes to Kawhi Leonard for producing the first ever buzzer beater in a game 7 in NBA history and for also bringing Canada their first NBA title.  Even against a Kevin Durant-less Golden State Warriors team, Leonard stepped up and delivered when it counted most.
Song of the year: Lost Lately- San Holo.  HM: Daemon Veil - EPROM & G Jones
Sander van Dijck, better known by his stage name “San Holo” surprised us with “Lost Lately” in June of this year.  A melancholic and melodic ballad of discovery and feeling “lost in aftermath of a breakup” spoke to feelings of insecurity and extends a friendly hand to those in need.  From an endearing marketing campaign featuring “lost” posters where fans could call a “helpline” to hear an exclusive sample of the song, to a music video taken straight from EDC: Bitbird executed an almost perfect build and drop for “Lost Lately.”  Great followup work to last years “Album1” and I definitely am excited about his future projects for 2020.  Honorable mention goes to the IDM monster “Daemon Veil” by EPROM and G Jones.  Plain and simple, I loved this ear worm.  There’s so much going on from the initial baseline drop to the stuttering minefield of drops and turns that follows before a calming conclusion.  Every time I hear this track, I see it too: the flying snares, the zips, zooms and wubs, the story it tells me….its captivating and satisfying.  While it isn’t as friendly for casual listening like my 2018 song of the year “Time” (also by G Jones), Daemon Veil is an IDM banger that I’ll continue to blast well into 2020 and beyond.
Album of the year: Good Faith- Madeon.  HM: Hollywood’s Bleeding - Post Malone
This was a tough call for me, there was a lot of great albums that came to us in 2019 but Madeon’s “Good Faith” stands tall above the rest.  From the initial singles of “All My Friends,” and “Dream, Dream, Dream,” to the unexpected bangers of “Miracle,” and “No Fear, No More,”: “Good Faith” makes a solid argument not just for album of the year but possibly even for the decade and I simply cannot recommend it enough.  Honorable Mention goes to “Hollywood’s Bleeding” by Post Malone.  Like many, I have thoroughly enjoyed the evolution of Post Malone from SoundCloud sensation to certified super-star, and “Hollywood’s Bleeding” continues to show us that this artist is just getting started.  I loved “Goodbyes,” “Circles,” “Sunflower,” and many other tracks on that album, and I’m confident many others did as well. Rapper, Rockstar, Soul-singer and bro: best of luck in 2020 and beyond Post, we’re all eagerly watching.
Movie of the year: Its a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.  HM: Avengers: Endgame
Easily the most contested category of the year and the hardest decision made in these superlatives.  2019 produced some awesome films but Tom Hanks’s take on Fred Rogers gave me chills that I hadn’t felt since seeing Christopher Reeve’s Superman as a child.  Like Superman, his presence among adults and children alike would universally cause awe and calm, almost god-like tranquility through security. In a year that was defined by division, unrest, cruelty, and anger: Fred Rogers reminds us that there’s still a great deal of hope for humanity, and it all starts with being a good neighbor.  Young, old and everyone in between can learn something from this deeply affecting story about humanity and connection.  Honorable mention goes to Avengers: Endgame for managing to be the only major franchise ending this year (Game of Thrones, Avengers, Star Wars) that managed to do it with a consensus BANG!  It was a 3 hour film that somehow felt like an hour and half, and when Captain America held Mjornir with every Avenger ever at his back and said “Avengers, Assemble!”, I couldn’t help but fist pump with a grin from ear to ear.  Tony Stark’s dying words of “I am Iron-Man,” gave me goosebumps and Black Widow’s death made me feel genuine loss: The Marvel Cinematic Universe managed to execute a singular plan and vision over 23 films and that is truly exceptional.
Actor/Actress of the year: Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur/Joker.  HM: Florence Pugh - Midsommar
Joaquin Phoenix’s long anticipated and controversial performance as Joker was the best singular work I saw this year.  Authentic, gut-wrenching, thought-provoking, and anything but boring: Joker gave us the next step in comic book cinema and a new cultural icon in the process.  Arthur Fleck is a poster child for mental illness, something that currently is at the forefront of our society and gave the general public a poster child for such conditions.  Phoenix’s Joker will one day be recognized in the same light as we currently see Che: an underdog figure of resistance and revolution standing against a seemingly unstoppable status quo and inspiring the unseen masses in the process.  Honorable mention has to go to one of my new favorites in Florence Pugh and her performance as Dani in “Midsommar”.  Her pain, confusion, and ultimate triumph that unravels throughout a trip to a small village in Europe during their mid-summer festival is the stuff of “slow-burn horror” wet-dreams.  There’s a scene early on where her character has to convey immense grief after suffering a personal tragedy and I can still hear that crying in the most haunting way.  Pugh’s performance stuck with me in a year full of great ones, and I’m very excited to see her future work including “Black Widow” in May.
Television show of the year: Watchmen- HBO.   HM: Good Omens - Amazon Prime
Watchmen blew my mind, and I the less I say about it, the better.  A continuation of the story told in my favorite book of all-time, “Watchmen” managed to tie together many loose plot threads from that story while also moving the universe forward in new and exciting ways that matched the tone of the graphic novel.  Regina King’s “Sister Night” was a complex, likable, and tragic protagonist uniquely qualified to walk us through this new chapter, and without spoiling things anymore than I already may have: YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS.  Honorable Mention goes to Good Omens on Amazon Prime.  To any familiar with the story or Neil Gaiman’s work in general, you know what to expect: deep stories, complex and likable characters, and witty dialogue that will make you pause and think or laugh feverishly in equal measure.  Its only 5 episodes, so there’s really no excuse to not dive into this one and see how the world ends…..or rather was supposed to…
Game of the year: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - PS4/XboxOne/PC. HM: Apex Legends - PS4/PC/XboxOne
From Softwares’ “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” stands tall in a year that finally saw long awaited projects like Obsidian’s “Outer Worlds” and Kojima’s “Death Stranding” get long-awaited releases.  An exciting and more stealthy evolution of the Dark Souls combat system made me feel like a real Ninja for the first time since Ninja Gaiden Black on my original Xbox.  The demanding, but fair gameplay combined with a variation of environments including haunted Japanese forests, Sengoku Temples, Palaces and gory battlefields came together to give the most complete package I played in 2019. Just don’t be too surprised if the final boss gives you problems because that f***er can almost made me break a controller.  Honorable mention goes to the game that managed to dethrone “Fortnite” as the most popular game for like a whole two months.  Respawn entertainment developed the awesome Titanfall series that I personally enjoyed and rumors had been circulating for quite awhile that they were looking to expand Titanfall into the booming genre of BR or Battle Royale.  Apex Legends is the answer to those prayers and still continues to push out new skins, content and weapons at a regular rate.  Did I mention it is also completely free to play?
Story of the year: President Trump becomes the third President to ever be impeached 12/19
HM: Henry Nobrega wins the fucking BVN Football Fantasy Football title. 11/19
To be perfectly honest, this is the first category that really could have gone either way for me.  President Trump becoming the third President in US history to be impeached for abuse of power and obstruction of congress was massive; regardless of how you feel about President Orangutan.  His tenure as President has produced a number of newsworthy moments but this story stood out among the others for sheer importance and international embarrassment.  Speaking of embarrassment, that’s essentially what my good friend Henry’s fantasy football team has managed to be every year that I’ve played with him.  A perennial basement dweller that typically auto drafts due to some BS excuse, and a resident near the bottom of our power rankings but this year he flipped that script on its head.  He managed to draft my Athlete of the year, Lamar Jackson, and the last great white running back in Christian McCaffrey.  Not only did Henry surpass his preseason ranking of bottom, he managed to win both regular season and postseason titles and beat a solid team by Graham Heck in the process.  I got love for you bro, but I’m still perplexed on how your season managed to be as dominant as it was.  Sorry Greta Thunberg, but these stories had my jaw on the floor, maybe next year lil’ Queen.
Meme of the year: Baby Yoda of the Disney+ show “The Mandolorian”
Was there every really a doubt here?  Baby Yoda or “The Child” as he’s known on the show is the biggest pop culture icon born on the internet in 2019.  The gap between Baby Yoda and what I considered to be an honorable mention was so wide that he will officially stand alone in this category.  Baby Yoda’s cuteness managed to melt even my stone cold heart this year and that is absolutely an achievement.  What made this creature so endearing was the universal applicability though music, sports, culture, and food: Baby Yoda was everywhere and the internet found common ground and shared meaning through sharing little graphics everywhere prominently featuring him as the centerpiece.  Well played Jon Favreau, we love this little guy and everyone thanks you for creating him.

I had a very complex dream, where I was playing Ninja Gaiden 2 and was fighting that one worm boss with the popular exploit of "stay in a cave, use the scythe charge attack, repeat until the boss dies", but then it devolved into going inside a person who had a symbolic sengoku battlefield inside him that represented his bodily functions and Ryu had a whole crew with him, with, like, a tech guy, who supplanted him with weapons and shit.
But then it devolved into some post-apocalyptic Slavic wasteland, where I was running from an emaciated mutated mama bear and then went into that one guys' house where reality started fucking up, shit, it was one of those dreams again, goddamnit.

Winter 2020 Power Rankings
Time to catch up on writing some good old Power Rankings.
1. Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!: It's hard not to fall for Eizouken's infectious love for all aspects of the art of animation. They even pay respect to the people who make sound effects. I respect Yuasa, but most of his works don't really appeal to me--but Eizouken can be appreciated by anyone who's ever loved a piece of animation. ★★★★☆
2. Oshi ga Budoukan Ittekuretara Shinu: The first law of idol anime is they're always better than you think they will be. I had high hopes for Oshibudo and it still managed to exceed them. Idols and yuri are not an uncommon combination (even if it's usually just subtext) but Oshibudo manages to mix lesbian themes with the purest and most genuine depiction of idol fandom possible to make a truly delicious gay idol smoothie. ★★★★☆
3. 22/7: Speaking of idol anime always overperforming... I thought this would be a 'so bad it's good' show based on its first episode but instead it's just so good its good. A compellingly weird frame story that plays with criticism of idols just enough to be interesting props up an impeccably well done anthology series about several girls and their disparate paths to the idol industry. Some of the eps are magical, some are relative duds, but the sum of it all is an incredibly endearing series. ★★★☆☆
4. SHOW BY ROCK!! Mashumairesshu!!: Speaking of gay idols... The original Show By Rock was an okay series with yuri subtext that I mostly liked because Ayaneru was in it, but this spinoff trims all the fat from that series and delivers pure gay band girls and it's brilliant. No weird sci-fi drama, no laser fights between CGI gerbils, just some extremely gay girls starting a band. ★★★☆☆
5. Itai no wa Iya nanode Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu.: At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Oonuma Shin always fucking delivers. Boufuri comes off as a boring MMORPG anime at first, but as a truly admirable "commitment to the bit" sees our protagonist Maple grow to literally God-like strength, it starts to worm its way into your heart. There's some great moments like Maple turning into a mech or a fluffball or fucking around and breaking sidequests, but for the most part it's just an extremely competent anime made by, still, the most underrated director in the business. ★★★☆☆
6. Koisuru Asteroid: It's a shame for a Kirara anime to ever be described with the term "disappointing" but Asteroid just doesn't deliver enough astronomy or geology and has way too much melodrama. The girls are still cute as fuck and it definitely hits most of the good Kirara anime notes, but it's decidedly a second-tier Kirara series. Also I'm still mad at them for ruining Suzu's hair. ★★★☆☆
7. Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumei Shite Mita: This is definitely a funny premise, but it's also one of those comedy shows where they really only have one joke that they do over and over. Still, it's hard not to enjoy Amamiya Sora as a cool and standoffish science babe, and by the time the gag is getting old the show wraps up with a surprisingly strong resolution to the romantic tension in the series. ★★★☆☆
8. ID:INVADED: This is the kind of show I almost never actually watch, but every so often I stumble upon one of these male-led action-thrillers that really manages to tickle my fancy. ID takes a compelling premise--it's like Minority Report except the detectives have to solve weird metafictional puzzles in scenarios derived from the psyches of the killers--and spins it out into an enjoyable science fiction action-adventure romp. As a piece of sf it doesn't say much more than "me am play gods," but it manages to be genuinely cool in premise and execution and also has a cute loli BBA. ★★★☆☆
9. Kuutei Dragons: CG anime conspiracy continues with this well made adventure story about whaling but it's in the sky. Unfortunately its addressing of the ethics of whaling is too wishy-washy to be interesting and it has some weird tonal stuff like setting up a "dude saves girl from prostitution" plot arc and then just not doing it so we just have to assume she like... goes back to whoring herself I guess? But this is never even addressed? It's weird, but the show has some pretty beautiful visuals for a CGI show and the ending arc is pretty satisfying. It queerbaited me with that Za-san character though. ★★★☆☆
10. Magia Record Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Gaiden: Madoka is probably in my top ten anime of all time, so just the existence of a shitty cash-in mobile game based on it pains me, much less seeing the entire franchise pivoting to selling it instead of more actual Madoka. Magia Record is bad in multiple dimensions; not only is it a poor imitation of the original masterpiece in both style and tone, the writing takes some truly disastrous turns with respect to the original series's canon. But I'mma be real with you... Yachiyo is the hottest anime girl of the year and she's hard gay for Iroha. So two stars. ★★☆☆☆
11. Murenase! Seton Gakuen: It feels like there's A LOT of "animal people" shows lately... This is another one. The girls in this are enjoyable thanks to great character designs from Sasaki Masakatsu who always manages to impart a very understated but tangible lewdness to all his characters. ★★☆☆☆
12. Kyokou Suiri: I really like 'talking anime' and I really loved listening to Kitou Akari talk for almost the entire runtime of this whole series. She's definitely a real one. It was also nice to see a romance with a cute disabled character whose disability is only really there in the background. Kotoko was just cute as fuck with an impeccable fashion sense. The story is kind of meh, especially once it gets into the meat of the Koujin Nanase arc, but it's worth it just to see Kotoko and Kurou's cute interactions. ★★☆☆☆
13. Nekopara: I wish Nekopara was better, and lewder, especially given that the franchise literally has its origins in porn doujinshi, but it still has lots of cute cat girls. Even if they do live in Saudi Catrabia. Maple is best cat. ★★☆☆☆
14. Ishuzoku Reviewers: The fact that this show became such a sensation is truly a testament to the power of anime tiddies. Unfortunately the character designs in this show do very little for me even when the characters are ones that aren't objectionably weird (which is infrequent) which is pretty much a fatal flaw for an anime that's supposed to be all about getting horny and nutting. Too thicc for me, man. I admire its gumption but in the end I didn't actually enjoy the show that much. I did learn the Japanese word for "cloaca" though. ★☆☆☆☆

I’ve gotten a lot of new followers so I figured an introduction was long over due.
First off, hello! Welcome to my blog. I try to keep up to date on all things Saiyuki, such as merch news and anime news!
So a little bit about me;
You can refer to me as ST or Nikki, either is fine!
I have been in the Saiyuki fandom for about 15 years. I have seen a lot happen in that decade and a half. I’ve watched communities rise and fall, I’ve seen discourse, I’ve met a lot of super cool people and built friendships.
My favorite pairing is the sometimes controversial 393 (Sanzo x Goku) pairing, but that doesn’t mean I don’t also see the father/son dynamic. I fully believe you can have canon views and fandom views when it comes to shipping.
If you couldn’t already tell, Goku/Seiten Taisei is my favorite character and I feel he has grown a LOT in the series, and he’s going to grow up even more as the journey gets more perilous. I have written many essays about his growth as well as theories.
I have a soft spot for the anime Gensomaden Saiyuki, even though it had that 90s aesthetic and has not aged well at all. I dislike Saiyuki Reload Gunlock, mainly because Even a Worm is one of my favorite arcs and it was poorly adapted, though for reasons I can understand. We may never get to see a proper adaptation.
Saiyuki Gaiden holds a big place in my heart and I love how Konzen changed from a man who just was bored with life to fiercely protective of a young Goku.
I also really love Saiyuki Drama CDs. I rarely can understand them, but they are a lot of fun to listen to!
I love drawing so you may see my doodles from time to time and recently got into pod casting about Saiyuki.
I’m also a fan of role-playing, particularly the pairing mentioned above. So if you have a Sanzo muse looking for a Goku muse, let me know~
That’s pretty much it for me. Thank you for following my blog! While I do have my favorite pairings, I try to keep this blog fairly neutral and feature everyone in the Saiyuki universe, as well as Wild Adapter, another one of Minekura’s series that I love. Tokito is such a cutie.

Bringing back an oldie that is pure comedic gold. I never actually shared the review here because it’s massive but you know what? I think some of you would appreciate it anyway! Random reviewer does get points for using his actual account and not dropping this pile of shit in my inbox anonymously. That I can respect, and for the sake of protecting his FF identity, his name is blocked out.
And for those who don’t want to click to embiggen:
“Another fiction (recommended by someone) concerning Sasuke and Sakura, and yet another grave disappointment. You have used Rinnegan Sasuke and adopted a monumentally absurd logic of him actually having trouble evading her during their training session? You cannot be serious! Why do all people infatuated with Sakura (or Hinata) and her non-canon “oh-so-awesome” speed (and her nonexistent and laughably poor CQC prowess) put her on such a high pedestal? It just baffles me. That is practically non-canon to the point of being grossly and obscenely OOC. Hebi Sasuke will cut her war-arc and Gaiden self down into confetti, even if he stands at a great distance from her (make it more than a kilometer, if you must), before she even has a chance to think, let alone blink. That is how fast Sasuke is. The guy was dodging consecutive Clay-based C2 (C4 as well) blasts that are well above hyper-sonic speed … in succession like it was nothing. The only time he got hit was when he let Deidara hit him to lure him into a trap. As for Kenjutsu, then people still misread that Bee battle and use the “underestimating thing” so freely without even paying attention to the manga (your S-Class mission took such a liberty there that it’s ludicrous)? Where Sasuke (despite being badly injured; as confirmed by Jugo and himself), was still faster than Bee to throw a sword into his other hand and hit himself with a Chidori before Bee even made a single stab; a fact confirmed by Bee himself (that the wounds were not fatal as he used Raiton to make them non-fatal)? Or Bee confirming and equating an injured man’s reflex action speed with Fourth Raikage in his Raiton cloak without the second “Bijuu chakra level” augmentation as Karin comments? A (Ae) guy who has been confirmed to be much faster than Minato when he uses Raiton armor (without “Bijuu chakra level” augmentation) as stated by Shee in the Viz translation of the manga? Or Bee admitting that Sasuke was the toughest opponent he ever took on? Where are you getting this from anyway? Who does a Rinnegan user have to underestimate? Who has this luxury? Forget that, how many opponents Sasuke took down during his training with Orochimaru? It led him to comment that he (when he was Sasuke’s age) was a lesser genius? Or Mifune (the guy with the fastest sword draw) commenting on Sasuke’s speed with the sword? Or Sasuke taking down several samurais as if they were cow-fodder; who were shown fight toe to toe Karui and Omoi (the same people who handed Sakura’s posterior to her in a second)? And she was using her Kunai and deflecting his attacks … just like that? It just bamboozles me … Then you showed that she deflected his Shurikens like it was nothing? Yes, like Orochimaru being lured into a trap by a twelve-year-old Sasuke did, right? Even he couldn’t do that. And that was when Sasuke was just a child. Or Danzo dying to one despite possessing about a dozen Sharingans? Or Deidara getting pinned by Fuma Shurikens despite being in air and throwing bombs at Sasuke? I mean, he STILL couldn’t evade them! Or Itachi, who could only match his prowess when he’s an expert in this as well? But Sakura is suddenly an expert in Shuriken-Jutsu; at Itachi’s level? Heck, he got his brother’s headband when he just woke up from a Tsukuyomi, stretched to 48 hours by Itachi and he was only eight years old then! By God! Should I go on? And “tossed” sounds like such an odd choice of words for Shurikens. Is he playing ball with her? Seems like it, as he left that one-of-a-kind dexterity and intelligence home when he sparred with the uber-talented Queen of ALL Ninjutsu (I will get to this point later), Kenjutsu, Shurikenjutsu etc. you name it! She’s so damned talented! And you are not even talking about these versions of Sasuke. You are talking about Rinnegan Sasuke; a guy who was much faster than Kinshiki (both in speed and in reflex action) and took his horn out and destroyed his created-swords, how many times? The only thing that threw him back was the force of the blows. Christ Almighty … he’s having difficulty with … Sakura?! Heck, the guy was much faster than Naruto (he has always been) in the movie. This is what irks me to no end about these Sakura-centric (or even Hinata-centric) fictions. Sakura’s status is upped to a ridiculous degree and Sasuke is dumbed down (a prodigy, might I add; Shikamaru also looked up to him by his own admission) to match Sakura’s level to such a degree that he becomes a painstakingly laughable, blubbering, hyper-romantic jackass who just … happens to be in love. Why? No reason. This fiction is no different. Why is Sasuke getting jealous of her sleeping around? No reason. He just is. When Sasuke in canon manga has always been an adherent of ideals and never a pointless, salivating chaser of romance and women. Which would explain why he only had sex with Sakura ONCE in over a decade. And that is canon-manga. Once he gave that to Sakura, he left her and never looked back. When he came back in the movie, it ends on a note of him standing away from her and looking off into the distance. In Gaiden, when she leaned in to kiss, he threw her an odd look and high-tailed out of her. Which version of Sasuke does this fandom keep writing? I don’t get. Really, I don’t. Then we have the issue of Sasuke crying in her arms and having nightmares, when he never did in the manga. Which portion of manga is this where he cried in her arms, or anyone’s arms, for reassurances or hurt/comfort nonsense when he isn’t even a child here? The only time that happened was when he fell down and was fainting with no control over his body after a lethal bite from Orochimaru (a bite that is only survived by one in TEN people). The kid was twelve then. The whole premise of your fiction is based on the sheer bastardization of his character. You have practically butchered it … and in second chapter, might I add. The very beginning! Your story goes on in a typical fashion, claiming scattered cliches of romances whilst not giving much value to what the manga actually exhibits. I have no issues with your genres. It’s your treatment that is bothersome. That admittance of “I didn’t listen to you” before Sakura about that criminal was literally the last straw; forget how absurd and unreal a Rinnegan user’s bloodied form actually was (I don’t even want to touch it, as it’ll open yet another can of nasty worms). It was another grave error of making Sasuke act like a complete fool before a ninja infinitely inferior than him on every front that it’s practically impossible to take this fiction seriously. When has he ever done that? Even after discarding Konoha’s putrid Nationalism, the only words he said to Kakashi were, “yeah, sorry.” Then we have the preachy tone of your fiction (till the sixth chapter anyway), where you define the clear tones of “hedunwrong” and go off with lengthy and highly hilarious comebacks from her and Naruto on putting Sasuke down. Disguising these admonishing tones with back and forth moods that is just off-putting. Give me a break! I cannot believe you are actually serious with this. Naruto would never admonish Sasuke or treat him badly (even mildly). The guy hyperventilated, let Karui sink his face in, was willing to commit suicide over Sasuke for crying out loud. He never went down this shady road. Heck, the guy repeatedly whined in several monologues that, “why don’t you come home, Sasuke?” and, “I understand how you feet” etc. The instance that made me drop this story was Sasuke sharing his … clan’s rite with Sakura. What on earth? You do realize that it requires “potent” Uchiha chakra to perform it, and that it has never, and I mean NEVER, been shared with or copied by anyone outside the clan? No one has managed it? Not even Kakashi. Why? Because if you had ever paid attention to the manga, then you would have realized that Uchiha chakra’s potency is comparable to the Bijuus (high-tier Uchihas). It is mentioned by Kurama and talked about several times in the manga. It is unmatched in the manga. Quite literally, given that Indra’s line directly inherited the Sage’s “strong Chakra” genes, Ashura never did. Now, one can let you off on the whole Sage inheritance as this was completed in 2014, but the rest still holds. The ground literally tears up and breaks apart when this technique is used when it happens with no other Katon tech from people other than the Uchiha. Sasuke broke apart a large stone wall with Dragon Jutsu when he launched it at the sky. How on earth can Sakura learn it … whose chakra is literally not even in a pathetic basket by comparison in regards to potency? I don’t care if it was just a knock-off version of it, how can she? When no one has … not even the Sarutobi clan who also happen to be experts in Katon Jutsus? Christ on a crutch, is all this even necessary? This out of character, sloppy take on a superman Sakura with such an “ah-sum” potent chakra, “ah-mahzing, theygoblindman” speed that gives Sasuke trouble (I gotta laugh at this), “es-pahshal” intelligence (when she’s canonically far below Sasuke, and I mean FAR below him) that allows her the accomplishment of such impossible feats? Her Chakra Control (CC)? You do realize that she would require CC at Sasuke’s level to even think about producing half the effects of the Uchiha tech as she lacks the chakra? Sure, her CC is pretty good. Excellent even. It’s above Naruto’s, as all he does is handle great volumes of chakra; the Bijuu literally hand over kneaded chakra to him. But at Sasuke’s level? The guy’s CC is at the Sage of the six paths level. Yes, this is manga fact, stated by Kurama itself to Naruto when he made a Pseudo-Mezo out of his Perfect Susanoo and poured perfectly controlled and kneaded Bijuu Chakra within it! Now, how can she produce such a control to even accomplish this given that three ingredients to produce this are missing; CC at Sasuke’s level or slightly below
CONTD … him, Chakra potency and distinct bloodline attributes? Apparently, it is of little issue as canon plot be damned! Honestly, this Sakura is such a Mary-Sue, capable of feats that must make her canon self dizzy and mad with envy. That’s the problem with romantic fandom here (NH as well, along with Hinata-Centric fics), they have little to no understanding of the manga. It doesn’t even seem like they have read it beyond the bubbles, contorted to suit their self-created romantic perspectives or fanciful notions of God characters and Naruto is the worst offender there, where he’s (hilariously) given a Sharingan and made to act like Sasuke, when that fandom hates the latter’s guts! All you have done here is assimilate several cliches and tropes to create a narrative that is built on a flimsy and improper footing. People do that with Uchiha brothers all the time. Make them chase like silly, idiotic men in the grip of a concept that is not even remotely touched upon in the manga. Not even close. Making them seem like these inconsequential, trivial caricatures that litter ever Samantha’s and Martha’s romance novels … and it’s quite painful to trudge through it. And that is not all, you have several pacing issues as well. There are abrupt breaks between scenes when they can be joined to the next one as the mood remains the same. Improper use of conjunction or it’s missing altogether. Dragged on scenes where pointless romantic mood is given priority rather than realistic characterization, which should be used to build a mood. That Sakura confession was the lowest point in this fiction till the sixth chapter bar Sakura’s “es-phashal” status as a ninja. Granted, we all make mistakes. Heck, I make them all the time and cannot seem to pinpoint them until after a month or so. But this is Beta-Read! How could your Beta not see these errors in genre and plot pacing in general, along with the over-use of OOC-ness to make this work AT ALL COSTS? I suppose fictions like “Aves of Maria” are a rarity, where the author knows they are dealing with a character that is not an exhibitionist of bleeding romance and is reserved and cold on such front. There, it was put under the carefully thick garb of lust. But, this is Naruto fandom and that was DeathNote fandom. That aside, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. You have quite a lot of positives as well even if the narrative tone is very troublesome. Your dialogues are clean and have a tinge of realism in them. The flow is (mostly) maintained and there is a good amount of consistency between the scenes. That is, perhaps, the most solid part of your story. You tend to remain consistent with the whole thing (good or bad). It tends to create a good flow that is hard to accomplish. As a final word, you have a solid footing as a writer. If you stop using tropes and cliches (like you have done here), then you can accomplish a lot. I may have sounded harsh, but I am a blunt individual. And I would never have reviewed it had someone not requested me to, to be honest. Anyhow, good luck on your future endeavours. I wish you all the best.”
I wish you all the best too, dear. *kisses*

I just hope the nice part of the old FE community are ok with people who prefer the 3DS games over the old ones too. I did not like Echoes much and found it the weakest of the three 3DS games but I'm terrified to give an honest review because I've seen some parts of the Echoes fandom get severely nasty to those who say anything even remotely negative about their game.
If my experience with the HoTE discord serves for anything, most of the nicer fans of the old games don’t bash people for liking the 3DS games. Hell for all their flaws I really enjoy them. They might bitch about characters sometimes and the new games getting a lot of attention, especially in relation to FE Heroes (but that’s a can of worms for another day lol), but nothing that can be classified as agressive. Just complaining.
I don’t know if I can agree with that because I have mixed feelings about all three games. I think Echoes is a very solid entry but also has a lot of problems. I also feel FE13 and especially 14 have really big holes that weigh down the whole experience, but that’s just me.
I know I am biased because I love Gaiden, I think it has a decent chance for fighting FE13 for the best as a whole of this gen and they compliment each other very nicely. I would put it on the top but again, I’m like among the 30 asshats who actually played the original.
As fans we are blind to certain criticisms, no matter if your fave is this or that.
I say you go express your opinion man, just back it up and who really cares if someone agrees or disagrees. It is your opinion and you are entitled to it, if someone is rude or whatever you justify it with a cool head on why you want to stick to your guns.

Would you consider writing a Itachi/kagome FanFiction? Or one were Kagome is born and lives in Kohona? It'd be cool to see how her character would change! Ah and I really recommend "Something Blue" by cherrynekochan its a beautiful ita/kag if you'd like to see a variation of their dynamic or just a adorable read. Thanks !
Maybe? I’m not sure to be honest. In terms of characters, I don’t feel particularly drawn towards Itachi. Is he a complex character with lots of room to play with? Yes. But do I feel drawn to him and excited about possibly building his character?
….
…. huh….
…. I think my one issue with Itachi is that his character is pretty much railroaded by the Japanese sense of fatalism. From the moment he came to comprehend the world he lived in in a philosophical scale, Itachi had already committed himself to defeat and failure. In the manga, this sense of fatalism is very much understated and subtle. But if you read his book or watch the Itachi gaiden part of the anime, it’s just… in your face. It’s a slap to the face. That part where Itachi thought ‘like is born, life suffers, life is dead…’… that is the quintessential self-defeating thought process of fatalism school of thought. Even with my meta knowledge on the Japanese tendency for fatalism due to their abnormally high rate of natural disasters (earthquake) breeding a mentality of ‘it’s inevitable for something to come along to screw you over so it’s better not to bother to begin with’… it’s still hard to stomach.
Every time I read Itachi’s part, I just want to scream ‘grow a pair of fucking balls, weasel boy! You want to talk about being born in crapsack world to a crapsack society? You don’t have a fucking clue! The Naruto verse is bad, true. But its horrors are a drop in the bucket compared to what our real world has witnessed… in the last century alone. You ain’t never seen your country bombed to shit by some other country with a misguided sense of justice and self righteousness, or watched your fellow children be poisoned from birth by weapons of war, or seen your motherland be ran roughshod over by a bunch of dicks for brains dictators in communist shirts, and be completely helpless and powerless through it all, forced to grin and bear it and keep on living until one day when you or your children can actually do something’.
… I’m sorry… my feelings regarding Itachi borders on being uncomfortably personal. I dislike that sense of fatalism, that subtle arrogance of thinking that nothing and no one will be able to change the world except for the thinker themselves (even if he is the first one to throw in the towel and admit defeat by helping gank his entire clan out of some misguided belief that this is the best way, that this is the only way. It’s so frustrating, so short sighted, so stupidly naive that at times, I want to punch Itachi in the face in the hope that it shocks some actual critical thoughts into that dense head of his. So much for the genius of his generation. He can’t even think outside of the ninja box of solutions at all. Count on trained killers to always resort to murder to solve their problems. Naruto geniuses are over rated. They are only genius when perceived by the flawed mentality of their universe. Put them in our real world and most of them can’t tell their knuckles from their asses. That’s my personal feelings about them. Count them geniuses and I’ll tell you. Itachi - fucking moron with a failed messiah complex. Madara - retarded and uneducated and so unaware of his own self it’s amazing he crawled out of his mom’s snooch at all, Neji - my god, son, talk about being completely unable to think critically at all. Sasuke - hahahahaha, this boy was dropped on his head when he was a baby. Tobirama - completely unable to think objectively through his bias at all, and also possibly unaware of the hole in his own reasoning. Out of them all, only Shikamaru has some hope to him but it’s barely even worth considering)
Compared to the geniuses of our world, the actual thinkers, actual philosophers, actual designers of our society, our champions and our brightest… these guys are dim candles in the wind. Certainly for a teenage audience who haven’t had much real world experience, they are impressive… but to an adult who frequents intellectual circles in multiple countries and cultures….. ha ha ha… it’s sad… yeah…
I’m sorry… I don’t mean to just… rant at you and bash these characters. To be fair, they are great in their own way, especially for the genre and the medium. They are heads and shoulders above characters from series of the same categories. They are geniuses in their own way… just… not in our world, and probably not by our rules. It’s not really their fault.
It’s just that… when I think about them… just my personal feelings and nothing else… it becomes a completely different ball game altogether. You have read my stuff. You have an idea of the level of critical thinking I operate on. The result is that I tend to be quite a bit more critical on characters compared to the fandom average. If I don’t feel excited about a particular characters, it’s hard to devote so much time and effort into working with them, building them, taking them apart, so on and so forth.
It’s kinda a case like that for Itachi. Certainly I can do it, but if I write Itachi, it’s probably going to be a deconstruction piece. I will take him apart. I will destroy him on some level. And then I will rebuild him again. It’s not going to be a pleasant process for Itachi, especially considering the heavy themes that he clothes himself in.
Blood, family, betrayal, loyalty, the greater good. Especially the greater good. What is the greater good? The greater good for who and how much greater are we talking about here? Where does the greater good end and a self-serving upper echelon merely using its name to further itself begin?
… I don’t know, man. In some way, I want to write Itachi, if only to punch a hole in that flawed mentality of his. Hah… greater good. If your measure of the greater good is only on the level of a single village, your village, then your understanding of greater good is woefully inadequate. But… on the whole… I just feel… I don’t know… daunted I guess. it’s going to be a lot of work for this character. Not even sure I have the time for him .. And it’s also hard to summon enthusiasm when I myself don’t feel excited about this character to begin with.
… As for Kagome, it’s a joy to write her… but I have written 2 big stories about her and her character arc. Unless I think up a completely different and unique character interpretation for Kagome, I’m unlikely to want to work with her again…. especially in the same universe setting. I just don’t like rehashing stuff. It’s boring. And for a Kagome born in Naruto-verse, unless it’s reincarnation style where she starts remembering things, then it’s going to be a Kagome in name only… and that’s… a completely different can of worms.
And thanks for the rec. I actually haven’t read fanfic in… a long time now. And I actually have a pretty long list of books I need to read. But yeah, when I have the time and a hankering for ItaKag, I will check that out.

FFXV Thoughts/AU game wish.
Even with as much fun as I’ve had running around and playing FFXV I agree there is a lot of wasted potential in worldbuilding, story, and characters(outside of the chocobros.) Plus the ending is going to fuck me up for a long time. And right now I’m hoping for some sort of sequel or a straight up AU gaiden game that lets us earn a 100% golden perfect happy ending.
Maybe the AU game would be a better bet with a different storyline/plot.
Thousands of years ago Ifrit, with his dislike of humanity brought down the Meteor bringing with it the Starscourge Plague and demons. The other Gods gifted humanity with the Crystal that keeps demons at bay, and tasked two bloodlines with protecting it. The Lucian royal line of  Caelum and the Oracle line Flueret’s. Every so often the King(or someone of the caelum line) and the Oracle have to perform a ceremony to re-energize the crystal and renew it’s protections.
Ardyn who is an agent/messenger of Ifrit has wormed his way into the Niflehiem government and has convinced them the Crystal is responsible for the demons rather than protecting people from them. And that the Lucians are not to be trusted with it convincing them to attack and claim the crystal for themselves. They attack on the day of the renewal ceremony and manage to damage the Crystal. To keep the Crystal from completely shattering King Regis is drawn inside, with Noctis and the crownsguard, and Luna(plus whatever her retinue is called) barely manage to escape the city and capture.
Once outside the city they learn that to save Noct’s father and fix the Crystal to prevent demons from overrunning the world, Noct has to gather the powers of his ancestors’ weapons, and Luna has to form covenants with the Astral/summons and then they need to perform the rite again, but this time charged with the greater power. At this point they split into two teams with Noctis and the bros going after the weapons, Luna and her girls going after the summons, both to save time and because smaller groups will have an easier time to avoid detection/capture(and because of limited space in the car, good thing they each have their own)
And that’s when you hit this games version of the open world. You switch between parties via umbra or cellphone. Some side quests can only be done by one party of the other based on the individual hobbies/skills, some storyline quests have the teams meeting up and swapping around members so it’s not totally gender separated for the entire game, and hunts can be done by either party.
Not sure how the rest of the story would go, or who would be accompanying Luna on her quest, but there’s the basic set-up.

I want to play fire emblem. Which game is the best introduction to the series?
Such an innocent question, but such a can of worms for an answer. There are at least as many opinions on this as there are FE games.
My first FE (and eternal true love amongst them all) was The Sacred Stones, for GBA, so I’m more than a bit biased in recommending it. I’m not sure if it is a great introduction, but it is a good FE, with all the staple mechanics and a world and plot completely of its own, so no danger of critical lore overload right from the start.
Another way to start working your way up is Fire Emblem, for GBA, confusingly named because it’s the first FE ever relased for a Western audience. (Also known by the more identifying title The Blazing Blade) I haven’t played much of it, like half an hour or so, but it’s very similar to Sacred Stones. A fine point to jump aboard if you’re committed to going through the entire saga. Be sure to continue with a fandom translation of the Japan-only sequel released before this one, the Binding Blade.
If you’re _very_ committed, go all the way. Go Famicom. Go Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. (Don’t.) If you’re not quite that committed, go for its remake and sequel (yep, at the same time, don’t ask, just go with it), Mystery of the Emblem, on Super Famicom. If you’re not that committed either, go for the remake of that instead, the New Mystery of the Emblem, on GBA. It’s visually a bit different from most of the other “modern” (GBA and later platforms) Fire Emblems, but it’s (p much) the original story and piloted lots of the good stuff that made the later Fire Emblems (next paragraphs) more mainstream.
An obvious and good choice would be Fire Emblem: Awakening, which is, for me, the best 3DS game ever. It’s beautiful, captivating, thrilling, easily accessible and has made emotional wrecks of p much everyone who ever laid their fingers on it, and they all enjoyed it vastly. If you start with it, though, there’s a very real possibility that all the others might shine a lot less brightly.
An equally obvious choice would be the most recent installment, Fates. And more specifically, for a beginner, Fates: Birthright, because it’s p much designed for newcomers to the series and is way easier than Conquest. At a dozen years of playing FE games at that point, I had the hubris of thinking I was a veteran FE player and went straight for Conquest, and it kicked my ass. There’s a lot of lore and history and characters and viewpoints in Fates, though, maybe overwhelmingly much stuff.
Or, take a chance. There’s a remake of the 1992 FE: Gaiden coming up (in Europe) in (holy shit aaaaaaa) just over a month, by the name of Echoes, fortuitously exactly on my birthday (thanks Nintendo ilu too)
tl;dr: I started with and will always love The Sacred Stones. Of the two friends of mine that are FE-fans, one started with Awakening and the other with Fates: Birthright, and both are still as happy as can be expected. Either of the latter two is probably your best choice.

As much as I’ve been a Kickstarter junkie in the past, I have a small confession – I usually don’t get to games I have backed until long after I’ve gotten my code. It’s not something that always happens, but in an industry where the march of progress is impossible to stop, it’s easy to have tons of games pile up in the interim. And sadly, I didn’t really get a chance to dig into Battle Princess Madelyn after I got my Switch key. Which is a shame, since I was hyped for the game. But sometimes things turn out well, and that happened when I was recently offered the opportunity to cover a new build, called Battle Princess Madelyn Royal Edition. While the original game was a complex Metroidvania style game, Royal Edition is much more faithful to the Ghouls ‘n Ghosts style that inspired both games. In many ways, Royal Edition was worth the wait.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
While at first I thought that Royal Edition was just a remixed platformer using the same visual assets, I couldn’t have been more wrong. I confirmed with the developer that in fact it was all rebuilt from scratch, and while some backgrounds may look familiar, it’s an entirely new experience. Most importantly, this is a linear game, so if you’re one of those that got stuck in the original Battle Princess Madelyn, you have nothing to worry about here. Your only concern in Royal Edition is getting to the end of each level and defeating the boss to progress. The game likes to throw enemies at you as distractions in the interim, but the real challenges are those delightfully wicked bosses. Plus, if you’re a fan of the classic Ghouls ‘n Ghosts series, the level map that appears before you tackle each stage will be a nice callback.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
One thing I really liked about Royal Edition is that the simpler format makes it really easy to appreciate what the game does well. Namely, the old school combat, but also the stunning visual assets. Though both the original game and Royal Edition have wonderful art, it’s much easier to marvel at it here. Everything from the lowliest skeletons to the fire breathing minotaurs just sparkle with personality and flair. I might even go so far to suggest that the art here is more memorable than the classic games that inspired it. One of my personal favorite designs is the mischievous pumpkin boss that spits seeds at you, then transforms into a skinny gourd to attack you. But all the monsters in Royal Edition are great, and most of them are unique. There’s only one boss that’s rehashed, the dancing skeleton that guards the crypt in the first stage. And I will say, the final boss in the game pleasantly surprised me, while at the same time irritating me with some tricky attacks.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Speaking of bosses, there’s three new ones here – the aforementioned minotaur and pumpkin, as well as a creepy pulsating heart that generates worms and slime. But that’s not all that’s new in Royal Edition. Madelyn also has a new trick up her sleeve, using her puppy Fritzy as a weapon! And I don’t mean as a satellite that spits bones, which he can also do. No, if any foe gets too close, just hitting your regular attack button swings Fritzy as an ethereal blue blade of might. It’s really powerful, and the only limitation is it can’t hit distant foes. Thankfully, nearly all of Madelyn’s other weapons work as ranged attacks. Fritzy’s sword can even be used while airborne to bounce off foes below Madelyn, pogo’ing off their heads like Scrooge McDuck. Another new feature are the giant skull coins hidden in each stage. Collecting enough of these brings more cheering characters to the credits after you beat the final boss, which is a nice touch.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
I also appreciated that you can change the banner wallpaper from 4 different selections. Oh and did I mention King Daddy Mode? It lets you play the game as Madelyn’s father, the king. It’s essentially hard mode, since you only have his sword and can’t acquire armor to protect yourself. On the plus side, that sword is massively powerful, but it also means he has no access to unlimited ranged weapons. Apparently beating King Daddy Mode twice unlocks the real ending to the game, but I was too weak to achieve that goal. I got up to one of the last stages, the Great Forest of Darkness, but couldn’t manage to beat that boss as the king.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Now while there’s a lot I enjoyed in Royal Edition, there’s also aspects that were occasionally frustrating. Many enemies can hit you before they are fully displayed on screen, such as the wicked skeletal archers. It’s also very easy to get Ninja Gaiden‘ed to your death by flying enemies, especially those damned bats and other aerial menaces. Granted, you have unlimited continues, but I hate losing a life due to landing in a pit. And though most of the game is very intuitive, I did get a bit flummoxed a couple times. Once was fighting the giant crab boss. I couldn’t deal damage to it, and then discovered there’s a switch you have to activate to open the crab’s weak spot. Another happened in the Forest stage. I didn’t realize a group of disappearing platforms branched a certain way, so I kept trying in vain to cross spiky death pits. And lastly, while the game looks and generally sounds fantastic, I wish each and every foe had a distinct audio cue warning you of their impending attack. None of these issues ruined the game for me, but it would have been a better experience had they been dealt with first.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Overall though, I’m very happy I got the chance to make up for lost time with Battle Princess Madelyn Royal Edition. It’s much more linear, and in many ways it benefits from that model. Best of all, even though it can be challenging, it’s always fair so long as you spend time learning attack patterns. If you love classic spooky platformers and want something fun that isn’t gonna take too long to beat, I’d highly recommend you check it out.

Convention Review: 8-Bit Coference
https://8bitconference.com/
Tumblr media
I had the pleasure of attending my first video game convention this weekend, and I'm happy to report it was a fantastic experience from start to finish.
8-Bit Gaming Conference took place on the 28th and 29th of July 2018 at Griffith College, Dublin. This is the second year of the conference and the organizers should give themselves a pat on the back for a job well done. I only managed to get to the Saturday event, but I soaked up enough throughout the day to come back satisfied, but it left me wanting more!
8-Bit is the brainchild of Graeme Moore, and with the help from dedicated volunteers and the staff of Griffith College, the event went extremely smoothly and was great fun for all ages. On site were security personnel, a fire marshal, along with first aid attendants.  The event was backed by a multitude of sponsors, such as AllCast Irish Gamers, The National Computer & Video Game Museum, The R.A.G.E, Four Star Pizza, The Guild of Nerds and Republic of Gaming, to name but a few. The entire list can be found on the events Facebook page (link at bottom). Many of these partners set up as vendors or donated to the conference in one way or another.  8-Bit conference 2018 was in aid of Inner City Helping Homeless.
Tumblr media
General admission started at 10am, but early entry was granted to people with special needs at 9am, and there was also a quiet room on-site for people who needed it. Beanbag chairs were kindly donated by the crowd at Beanbags.ie.
My first trip in (after a coffee in Arthurs Cafe), was to the room set up by the National Computer and Video Game Museum. The room was filled with arcade machines supplied by Mini Arcade Systems, and the Museum had a choice selection of video game memorabilia and retro video games. I was more than over the moon to see boxed copies of Final Fantasy IV, Super Mario 3, and Sonic The Hedgehog.
Mini Arcade Systems supply a retro bartop console arcade, complete with tonnes of old 8 and 16bit titles. I had a go playing the original Shinobi game, which was an absolute blast. I would have stayed longer, but I knew I'd never get to leave.
The next room was a mixture of retro consoles, featuring a Dreamcast, Playstation1, SNES, and more. It was like a trip through time. Most impressive of all was a Gameboy hooked up to a massive LCD TV. Playing Tetris in HD never felt so good. The Gameboy was also modified to be used with an SNES controller. It definitely made for a great gaming experience. Super Smash Bro's was also on the go on GameCube, along with House of The Dead on Dreamcast.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the PS1 didn't feel like working which was a let down. I'm a huge Playstation fan and it was a shame this particular Playstation wasn't working. There were other Playstations on-site, but it's a shame how one faulty system managed to make it's way through.
After a quick go of Street Fighter II on the SNES, I went upstairs to the main conference room. As I ascended, I was greeted by some familiar 8-Bit music playing through a PA system, along with a huge Mario Kart flag draped around the stairway.
When I entered the main room, I didn't know where to look first, it was my idea of heaven. Game Vendors as far as the eye could see. People gaming, people dressed up in Cosplay, and it was only 11am at this point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After doing a lap of the floor, I seen a few familiar faces. The Guild of Nerds were hosting a Cosplay competition later on in the day, and had prints of different Cosplayers for sale. The Irish Chapter of the 501st Star Wars club were out in Force (pun definitely intended), and the RAGE (Record Art Game Emporium) had also set up a stall in the room, along with generously setting up a SNES for people to come along and play some games.  The Ghostbusters were also on call for any ghostly problems that might occur throughout the day, just to be on the safe side!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A row of tables had been set up for some casual gaming, Destruction Derby 2 and Rayman 2 were on PS1, an emulation of Streets of Rage was on the Wii, Ninja Gaiden was being played on Xbox. Tekken 5 matches were taking place on PS2, and Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time was on Gamecube. People were also on the Dreamcast having a few games of Crazy Taxi. A couple of Laptops were also set up with Wolfenstein 3D for those old school FPS fans, Quake 2, and Worms. It wasn't just games of yore however, Gamevan.ie had set up a few consoles with Fortnite on the go, along with having a vendors booth. I had my fair share of games at the retro table before heading off to do a little bit of shopping.

Rewind Retro Gaming and Retro Ralph sorted me out with some fantastic PS1 titles to ad to my collection. The games were all in fantastic quality along with being extremely cheap in price. I helped myself to a few games (and came back for seconds). Word of advice for people interested in coming to 8-Bit, I couldn't find an ATM machine on campus so come prepared.
I wandered over to Like The Bog Flower Designs and Beanies Art Mart who both had a fantastic selection of homemade figurines, stickers, badges, T-shirts and prints.
As the day went on, I took part in the Tekken 3 tournament, after days and days of training, I got my ass absolutely handed to me by Eddy Gordo, not the most graceful of losses, but it was a great bit of fun for all involved. Other tournaments were Mario Kart, Street Fighter, and Super Smash Bros.
One of the spectacles of the day was a 10-player Bomberman game being played up on the big screen in the main room. This was headed up by the lads at AllCast Irish Gamers, who were also the MC for most of the events throughout the conference. These lads know how to work a crowd and kept everyone entertained until the end.

I was in attendance for a few events on the main stage, the first of which being a panel of gamers discussing all things retro. It was interesting to hear other people's ideas about the way retro games are perceived by a modern audience, and do they still hold up as much today as they did when they were first released. They also held a relatively retro quiz which was a good laugh to see go down.
Ansonix was on the music side of entertainment for the day and kicked things off by performing his cover of the Streets of Rage theme song, before playing some of his own original works. I really dig this kind of 8-Bit style and I think Ansonix is someone we're going to be hearing a lot more of in the future. You can check out his music for free over at https://ansonix.bandcamp.com/.
I grabbed a Slushee from the Candy Pop Man and took a seat in time for the cosplay competition, headed up by the Guild of Nerds. Nate ó Cadhla was the MC for the competition, and there was a panel of cosplaying judges; Jichiie, Shonarrrrrgh, and Twin Tails Cosplay. Some of the Cosplayers really put in a lot of love and effort to both their costumes and their cosplay persona. A particual favourite of mine was Deadpool, who I tried to wind up by calling him Deathstroke (he wasn't too happy  about that)…. The Cosplay competition was short and sweet, with the victor being Totoro (from the Studio Ghibli film My Neighbour Totoro).
The day wound down with the tournament winners competing on the big screen.
My only regret about 8-Bit Conference 2018 was not being able to hang around long enough to enjoy the entire weekend. I feel like I missed out on so much even though I was there for most of the Saturday. Next year I'll make sure to be in attendance for the whole weekend so I don't miss out on the fun. Graeme, and all of team 8-Bit should be really proud that they put on such a fantastic event that catered to the retro needs of veteran gamers, but was also a fun and insightful look for the younger generation.
My advice for people who would like to attend the conference in future:
Plan your route, Griffith college is located just outside of Dublin City and isn't a central location
Bring money, as there is no ATM on-campus
Most importantly, take part and have fun, you can sit here and read this review all you like, but trust me when I say, you need to be there to get the best out of it.
