definitely curious about 2 for Wren
2. What was your original concept for this character? How did playing them change that concept?
RoughROUGH draft Wren was a little more mysterious. They were going to be in disguise a lot, except during performances, with maybe some Oracle archetype thrown in later for flair. They were going to have a much less contentious relationship with Sheyln and Gods - because of vibes, they were also going to cry gold and glow a lot more.
I pivoted towards Wren being more of a wide-eyed and naive, but well-meaning kid that was just all impulse, no thoughts in the updated rough draft. They were also going to be spreading themselves thin helping out at the circus because they were afraid that if they weren't useful, they'd be thrown out (originally they were going to be thrown from the monastery and then ran into trouble with the noble that had been hassling them, so…callback trauma!). To an extent, they still are kind of naive and impulsive, but more in the way of someone exploring the bigger, brighter world for the first time. For example: One of the party members, Chadrum, is a braggart and loves to tell tall tales of his heroism, which Wren ATE up (he was kind of reminiscent of how her mom would talk about her adventures), but once they started living the adventure and seeing the reality next to the "tales of heroism" they have started asking more discerning questions and not trusting information at face value. Wren is also WAY more logical than I had banked on at first. I thought I was gonna hit the ground running with a character that was pure of heart and dumb of ass, but NOooOOOOooo. Wren had to develop logic! Still pure of heart, but damn, Wren has logic'd their way through some stuff way better than I ever expected!
Something that has never changed is Wren's alignment. Which, on their sheet, is "Neutral Impressionable".

bodyguard au (teaser?)
i've been working very hard on this unbound au with my partner in crime mage, which i lovingly dub "bodyguard au"! and i've finally developed everything enough to make a semi-stable relationship chart for everything!
in a nutshell (ao3 tag style), bodyguard au is:
main cast: fern, jax (wren), fresia, though most people directly connected to fern will appear. fern and jax take turns as the pov character!
main relationships: jax/fern, fresia&fern
angst with varying degrees of fluff
horrible mutual pining, but with a twist?
yes, the twist is jax's fake identity, wren
friends to enemies to friends again and finally lovers with the slowest burn to ever exist
fern gets fucked up. jax doesn't know he's fucked up. fresia's past is fucked up. everyone is kinda fucked up.
...how did you fuck up this college au so badly that it literally became (checks notes) an underground spy-esque syndicate au?
as for the plot? oh boy.
fern starts afresh in fallshore city, away from the syndicate his father headed until his death and its mission to bring down cube corp.
sure, it's something aros was passionate about enough to build a whole underground syndicate dedicated to that mission, but after being kept safe from the underground world all his life, fern wants to breathe some colour into his life: and that's when he meets wren.
wren is… nothing like fern. he's a bubbly social butterfly with a daily workout routine and the smarts to ace his classes. he knows borrian history back to front, can recite every galarian city in alphabetical order in under a minute, and reads historical documents from hisui as a hobby. yet, as fern teases him for never having tried a kalosian croissant and watching crappy unovan action movies and only playing old kantonian fighting games, he realises that he's become best friends with wren.
and when fern realises he wants to be more than best friends with wren is when jax, wearing the mask of an all-too-perfect boy named wren, realises his mission to protect fern is harder than it sounds.
and i mean, being the son of the founder of a syndicate with a mission to take down a multi-million-dollar company that's been going to extremes to cover up their unethical scientific experimentation sure puts a target on fern's back! but more importantly, jax can't ignore how much it hurts him to keep wearing wren as a mask when he cares for fern far more than he should, too.
so what happens when jax fails?
when fern is thrown back into the syndicate he'd wanted no part in against his will?
when fern learns that wren — his best friend, and the boy he's in love with — had never been real from the beginning?
right. where was i? relationship chart? this was what i wanted to show off from the beginning?
anyway!!! we hope you all enjoy bodyguard au!!!!!
