Musical Touken Ranbu ~Mihotose no Komoriuta~ Report [23.04.17 LV]

This post contains my summary and personal impressions about the recent Toumyu. I attended the Indonesia live viewing of the senshuraku show on 23/04/2017.

Disclaimer : Spoilers for the whole show, some details might not be accurate.

In a nutshell, it was the best 3.5 hours I’ve had in my life for a while.

Preface - I actually haven’t been in the Toumyu fandom for long, and wasn’t aware of how big it is here either. When they announced an LV in Indonesia, I almost dropped my phone, thinking is this for real?! The tickets were priced at Rp 225 000 / 1900yen (which is more than reasonable imo), I forked over my oney without thinking as it might be a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience, right? At least that’s how it was for me.

Other than the actors’ selfies, I absolutely had no idea of what it’s going to be about (Tokuga-what???). My Japanese understanding is still mediocre (there are no subs). Never have I been to an LV, concert or any of that sort - the only regret I have is probably not bringing lightsticks lol. Didn’t expect much, but I ended up more than satisfied.

Honpen

The musical promptly started at 4.30 PM (our time). When the whole cast appeared on screen for the special LV message, we all screamed, especially when they said Indonesia~ o(*ﾟ▽ﾟ*)o

And so Mihotose no Komoriuta begins.

We first see Ishikirimaru showing a disinterested Ookurikara his diary. Nikkari was sketched on one of the pages (cough a ship is sailing already cough) - and it sets the scene for the whole flow of this musical, which is basically Ishi retelling whatever he had written in there.

The flashback begins with a new sword manifested in the citadel : Sengo Muramasa (oh god). He performed a (sinful, to say at the very least) solo right off the bat... exposing his thighs..... and to see its glory in HD was truly an Experience.

I thought Suwabe’s NUGIMASUKA? was everything, but NOPE YOU ARE LIKE A LITTLE BABY WATCH THIS. Musical!Sengo says something related to stripping every 5 seconds, and it’s not easy to get used to to as it is accompanied by Mokkun’s iconic facial expressions. Especially when he stuck his tongue out on stage I literally held my breath??? wHO ALLOWED

The next flashback is in regards to Nikkari and Kuri’s expedition in Mikawa, which had been infiltrated by the historical revisionists. They attacked this old man who was carrying his baby and upon seeing Nikkari, he entrusted the baby to him lol. God it was entertaining to see Nikkari going DOUSUREBA II?? and Kuri’s like yo fuck I don’t know either I’m trying to fence off these revisionists?! The revisionists has sadly killed the baby’s parents and they return to the citadel with that baby in hand, which turns out to be Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Monoyoshi was first to get into the whole baby-care train, along with Ishi. It tugs on my heartstrings every time Monoyon takes over because it felt so pure... as he was the one who always stood by Ieyasu’s side (historically speaking). He lulled baby Ieyasu to sleep by singing the (what it seems) theme song of this musical - “nen korori” lullaby.

Soon, Nikkari and Tonbokiri accustom themselves into taking care of Ieyasu too. Nikkari would push a cart containing baby Ieyasu - he was like “yeah whatever” but I have a feeling he does care...! Tonbo would strap the baby on his back and go sparring in that state (wtf); when the baby cries he goes “??? did I do anything wrong” and it’s just so amusing to see. xD

Sengo and Kuri basically give zero fucks at this point of the story lmfao. Kuri’s moments were still to come later on but Sengo felt like the comic relief of the whole musical (which was very much needed because as we all know, Toumyu is jam-packed with Historical Angst)

In order to keep a low profile on their true nature, these six swords mask themselves as Ieyasu’s generals... couldn’t remember names tbh but Ishi was “Hanzo.” Ieyasu grew up to become a ruler under their assistance and had a son named Nobuyasu (the question is, who did he have him with? is it just me wondering?)

Little Nobuyasu was adorable ; ; he was mostly under Ishi’s care (even their fabric has the same green color? CUTE). There was this one scene where he went, "I don’t like swordfighting... so I won’t train. Please don’t tell father?” and Ishi’s like “well okay but you’ll have to do a mane [imitation] of me as a punishment.” and by imitate ISHI TEACHES THIS SMOL CHILD HOW TO 'HARAITAMAE, KIYOMETAMAE' AAAAHH /clutches heart/

By some miracle Sengo and Kuri started getting involved. Kuri and Ishi has a lot of tension under the surface for some reason? There was a part where Kuri spars Ishi and Ishi said, "your blade's getting dull.” And it somehow triggers him w

As for Sengo, I’m pretty sure he just went up to Tonbo's ass and goes like WHAT'S UP FAM (do u get the reference) so Tonbo’s explains the current situation. In addition, Sengo had this brief moment with Nikkari where he decided to approach him under the moonlight... it was super awkward and Nikkari being Nikkari, whenever Sengo would hit him with his NUGIMASUKA?? punchlines, Nikkari would just grin eerily without saying anything back and it lowkey creeped him out lol. In the end they're both like 'god whatever let us help yall’ -- also these scenes might not be in order orz

Meanwhile, Kuri encounters a farmer named Meigo/Gohei (can't remember so please let me refer to him as a farmer) and saves him from historical revisionists. The farmer was awed by Kuri's swordfighting skills and begs for Kuri to teach him. Kuri goes DARE NI NAREAU TSUMORI WA NAI as always, even after the sob story that is this farmer having lost his little sister due to war and thus he wants to get stronger. He follows Kuri around thereafter, that little Nobuyasu came up to Kuri and pleaded for Kuri to teach the farmer... so Kuri reluctantly accepts.╰(*´︶`*)╯kuri is weak to small things, it's canon

The whole farmer spiel became Kuri's spotlight in this musical. Time passes by and Nobuyasu grew to a fine adult, ruling along with his father. The farmer became their secretary/Nobuyasu's right-wing man? But of course time has other plans and more historical revisionists attack. The farmer died in Nobuyasu’s embrace. I remember him saying to Nobuyasu, “Please excuse me as I go before you” ; ; /sobs

Nobuyasu affirms his hatred for wars and fighting after that death because well, they grew stronger together to take place in the battlefield which will one day eventually take their own lives. But you know who took it the hardest though? Kuri.

He visits the farmer’s grave, dead cold expression plastering his face as always... and then he took out flowers right before he sets off. "This is why I never intended to get along with anyone." The way he said it as he glances for the one last time hurts so much. T__T

Ishi seemed to be deeply struck too. Another spar with Kuri ensues, and this time he comments that Kuri’s blade has gotten heavy (instead of dull). Kuri’s still in his emo phase (even tho he’s lowkey emo 24/7 ngl), hence Nikkari defends the bae by explaining something along the lines of, "It’s actually Ishi who's carrying the biggest burden in all this, y’know."

And welp he isn’t wrong - Ishi suddenly comes up to the toudans one day, saying, "I'm going to pierce him." Apparently, Ishi learnt that according to history Nobuyasu's supposed to commit seppuku within the hands of Hanzo... (I think this was why there was a scene where Ishi angrily ripped a page off his diary, while hesitating as well, really showed the internal conflict and it surprised me tbh;;)

This is where the angst starts to get real - Monoyon automatically gets defensive as he’s the #1 Tokugawa caretaker. Ishi goes like boo hoo we still have to be protect the flow of history no matter what. Eventually Monoyon retracts himself though orz;; I vividly recall his voice cracking as he mouthed, "In the end, we're nothing more than touken danshi, aren't we." |ω；｀)

On the other side, Nobuyasu retaliates to his dad that he's sick of all these battles and fighting etc. ofc Ieyasu gets pissed and instructs his son to take his own life (?!). Though at this point Nobuyasu’s already too depressed so he orders Ishi-Hanzo to do it instead. Ishi stood by him with his sword drawn out, all ready and yet.... he couldn’t kill him.

Which means history already started changing as Ishi, who was the one dead set on protecting it in first place, was in a whirlwind of emotions, unable to cut Nobuyasu. Thus it triggers the Kebiishi to appear ━(((;ﾟДﾟ)))━!!! The Kebiishi looks superb imo hahah

I probably expected this, but as Ishi’s relentless attacks on the Kebiishi fails, Nobuyasu ends up dying in order to protect Ishi. It was such an emotional moment as (now this wasn’t something I expected AT ALL) Ishi screamed seeing the man he raised with his own hands takes his fall -- ISHI REALLY WENT INSANE FOR A MINUTE THERE. It was breathtaking.

The Kebiishi was too strong that it took a while for all the touken danshi to fight it off.... I actually expected someone to go shinken hissatsu EHEHEHE stripping Ishipapa sounds Good, I mean he already went mad so why not? (or not Sengo coz let's admit that's all this guy wants to do anyway)

Speaking of Sengo, did I mention that his battle scene was another level of Pure Sin? He sat on the back of one of the historical revisionists, again with the haughty thigh-exposing movements, before going on a killing spree. There was also a part where he yelled (he was genuinely furious or something? wasn’t just for the sake of his personality) and it was amazing.

So everything's over... or so you thought.

The stage shifts to Ieyasu on his deathbed, his 'generals' visiting him for the last time. Monoyon sat on his bed and helped Ieyasu get up. He repeated so many times, "Nobuyasu, please forgive me..." and I was the verge of tears (again) until Nobuyasu appeared and I was like wth boi you're like dead tho?? Ieyasu was hallucinating, a sign that he was going to face the end real soon.

Monoyon calmed Ieyasu down by singing the nen korori lullaby he used to sing when Ieyasu was still a baby -- and with that said, Ieyasu died in Monoyon's arms. Up until the very end, Monoyon smiled. One of the swords (I think Nikkari) said that you don't have to do that anymore... but Monoyon, with tears streaming down his face, sticks to what he preaches, which is to smile no matter what.

Monoyon said "Good night..." to Ieyasu, now dead, and that's when I LOST IT. I really lost it. I cried so hard. ( ;__; )

And that ends Ishi's flashback.

Back to the present citadel, Ishi shows Nikkari his doodle of him, now inked and complete. Nikkari went like "Is that how you see me...?" and they have a moment jsdkjfh honestly THIS musical would please all Nikkari x Ishikirimaru shippers out there (I think I've been converted to one. or who am I kidding I basically ship everyone I see). Then Ishi remembers he has chores and rushes for uma touban, leaving the diary out in the open....

...For an aloof Kuri to cross by and see HAHAHA. Kuri flipped through the diary and found that Ishi drew his face too (!!)

He had the slightest smile in his face, and thus the musical ended on such note.

LIVE Portion

There was a 15 minute intermission before this (thankfully) so I had time to collect myself from the deeply moving 2 hours worth of honpen.... The LIVE portion felt shorter than the previous toumyus, I think. IIRC they only had 7-8 songs (excluding Touken Ranbu) and also this setlist isn’t reliable as I couldn’t exactly recall the order of things.

1. The Disco-like Opening Song || A good start (wasn’t as upbeat as mistake imo but still cool!) - I love the coats on all of them. Also Sengo's outfit still has that bunny tail YAMERO

After that goes the usual part where these touken danshis are like HOLD UP WHY ARE WE SINGING AND DANCING?? Then the customary Sanjou Rule corner... I was already betting it’ll be Ishi OR Sengo but there were two spotlights and it flashed on Ishi AND Nikkari....!!

They looked at each other, spoke out the lines between them and then facing the audience. Didn’t recall the kyun serifu soz honestly the way they were with each other was too much ( ^ //// p /// ^ ) but I did remember Nikkari winking in the end and I died.

2. The Even More Disco-like Song || Sengo became the center of this song. Is this an improved version of his solo? (I can hear a bit of it). Up until now, the image of Sengo leaning seductively to Tonbo in the end of this performance still sears deep in my mind. Yes. I think Tonbo coordinated by putting his hand up Sengo's thigh. I am not to be blamed for any obscene images in your head rn.

3. Nikkari / Kuri Duet Song || Both Nikkari and Kuri are good dancers and this song showed it off. The camera zoomed quite often and to really see them sweat... ( ͡°;; ͜ʖ ͡°;;) Also the song gives me a one night stand vibes (if it’s them I wouldn’t pass up such offer tho). There was a part where Kuri touched his tattoo teasingly (THANKS) - or was it in the latter songs? Still, it was dangerous. Cue screaming.

4. Ishi / Monoyon Duet Song || THIS DUET GAVE ME DIABETES I CAN’T. Most memorable song for me, as the chorus was mostly "Don't worry, don't worry~" - I have it stuck on my head right now, haha. See this tweet (3rd pic, tho the first 2 have quality kuris) as it describes how cute the whole thing was. Monoyon is literally an angel. Also ballistic Ishi where? He's back to usual ( ; w ; )

5. Tonbo Solo || Wow. Just wow. His voice was like velvet, and he was able to hit all those notes right. I have no words (*ﾟдﾟ*)ﾄﾞｷﾄﾞｷ

6. Group Song || I wanted to say that ballad song but ballad my ass because the song didn’t give us the cute mabataki-ish vibes at all, THE INTERACTIONS WHILE GOING AROUND THE THEATER MADE EVERYONE FEEL SO ATTACKED??? Ishi went close to the camera and gave us a peekaboo like he did with baby Ieyasu (hnghh///) and Kuri went to give us his stealth af gaze while making an X with his fingers. They were both heart-attack inducing in their own ways.

ALSO THESE ARE THE TWO FAVORED ONES IN OUR CINEMA, DID THEY KNOW WWW everyone was screaming and dying. Meanwhile, Monoyon blew a kiss to the camera but like only me and 2 others screamed when he did. (ilu)

7. The Otoko Michi Song... || ...But not otoko michi and still has the same vibes. CAN I SAY HOW EVERYONE WAS SUCH A TEASE? When the drum hits and they line up, obviously we know they're going to strip, right? But then they TURNED AROUND, DRAPE THEIR CLOTHES OFF BY THE SLIGHTEST BIT, PULL 'EM BACK UP BEFORE GOING ON TO TAKE THEM OFF FOR REAL. jesus

Ishi and Tonbo's arms were so ////// obviously Tonbo is a bara but Ishi?? Didn’t expect to love his outfit a lot, and thank God for those half-gloves. As for Kuri - OH GOD KURI. He has a tank top because ofc gotta expose that dragon tattoo of yours?? I was lowkey expecting a low cut back that would fully expose such tattoo (why do I want death) but it's okay... THIS IS FINE. Nikkari's outfit is actually my favorite from the start of the live but when he takes some off... THAT BACK THANK YOU (also since he has the lightest fabric color of them all, you can see it when he's drenched in sweat KHJSH). Also, Sengo's legs were fully clothed to our dismay. You could've kept your garter-shorts... but hey, we get to see him in a freaking crop top, exposing his navel. Equally sinful.

In conclusion : I Want To Sue Them All. Okay, except for Monoyon. He had a frill top (I love his pink ribbon for some reason) and black shorts which was the epitome of innocence compared to his comrades. Please protect him.

I basically wrote a long-ass paragraph for their outfits but moving to the actual song itself, it didn’t feel as catchy (maybe I’m just too used to Otoko Michi). In the bridge they still utilized instruments; if Team Sanjou + Kashuu used rope and Team Shinsengumi + Hachisuka used fans, here they used a stick with bells & multicolored ribbons attached to it! Ishi looked so happy. o(〃＾▽＾〃)o

8. Touken Ranbu || The closing song, is there more to say... I sang along because my feels.....

The entire cast bowed down, and I felt my eyes glassy again. Musical Touken Ranbu was really, really beautifully done.

Also : my take on the characters and their actors

Sakiyama Tsubasa [ Ishikirimaru ]

Ishi being emo > Ishipapa

It wasn't something I expected, but I was blown away when he went psycho. Even though Ishi is a gentle figure I could also see how it would come to that conclusion too

His laugh is so.... 爽やかな.... I regain 10 years of life everytime I hear it

If you're accustomed to in-game Ishi, or even if you've watched Atsukashiyama Ishi, then this will definitely give you a different perspective. BUT SAKIYAMA DOESN'T DISAPPOINT.

Araki Hirofumi [ Nikkari Aoe ]

You bet he NAILED Nikkari’s characterization and everything, even the voice sounds similar omf

I’m sure he had thrown in and innuendo or two but i couldn't quite catch it orz

His dance was LIT

I said this but, Nikkari’s my favorite in the idol outfit. It’s military-inspired and when he takes it off for the seventh song, I couldn’t keep my eyes off him _(:3

Zaiki Takuma [ Ookurikara ]

I NEVER KNEW STARES COULD KILL UNTIL I SAW HIM

Eyeliner on point, expression on point

Very apathetic like how kuri should be; for a character that doesn't speak a lot, his face and movements shines through.

And so whenever kuri hints emotion, it's so well executed. Thank You

Definitely the fangirl magnet in our cinema as he can just breathe in, and like, everyone screams

Spi [ Tonbokiri ]

Has the best singing voice out of the whole cast, don't @ me

Literally flowers can grow when you hear him sing. Or maybe even speaking in general, as I felt his enunciation was spot on

He brought so much life to Tonbo's personality which I, uh, never looked into before the musical (now I have a reason to lol)

His real name is William W. Spearman (LMAO DID HE SEE THIS COMING??) and he can communicate in English. His blog post towards international fans made me emo

Ota Motohiro [ Sengo Muramasa ]

Make him illegal. That’s all I have to say

We don’t know a lot about his character yet so I can’t comment much,, but he was a refreshing figure throughout the musical

1000x more yabai on stage even if you have seen his selfies as Sengo

I knew him through Twitter interactions with Torippi tbh (Yasusada’s actor) can’t wait for more, except in-character,

Yokota Ryugi [ Monoyoshi Sadamune ]

This musical turned me into a Monoyon oshi, and I personally felt like his acting was the best out of everyone.

Also his first time in a 2.5D production I'M SO?? I want to love and support you

Literally I dont know who he was until I looked stuff up and turns out he’s in this BL movie with Kuroba Mario

(for the curious souls thirsting for MonoJiji, it's titled Udagawachou de Mattete yo)

A cinnammon roll, I say as I feel attacked by the /light/ fanservice moments he did...!

And to end, some unimportant trivia on my LV experience lol.

A male security guard watched over the WHOLE SHOW near my seat. i honestly wonder how did it feel for him. ("why are these girls fawning over trannies dancing and stripping")

The connection lost (for a split second) about FOUR times over the course of the whole musical. Half are Kuri's scenes, which garnered panicked shouts of the whole audience :”)

The special effects was so cool and the OST stood out to me so much. Everytime they go into battle, the OST has slight club music vibes. Is it Sengo's influence?? w

I sat in A5 (which was the uppermost, slightly to the right) and I have no complaints about the view. To be honest the very front seats were empty but I sincerely hope Indonesia will continuously be in the list for the next live viewings. (looks at Tousute and an upcoming Toumyu)
