Hold the fucking phone, I know I was just joking yesterday about not wanting to relapse into Naruto again but I had a thought about one of the characters from X tonight out of the blue, go to look it up on wiki and found out CLAMP is releasing 5 previous unreleased chapters (in America) of the X-manga called 18.5. which apparently got released last month in Japan

Are you fucking shitting me right now? I guess they were published in Japan but of course never came stateside. No clue if it even will come to the US. Sadly it STILL doesn't appear they are going to actually finish the series and at this point, I don't think I would be satisfied with anything they do put out because it's become such a bitter point of contention and I'm kinda over it. I also feel like as people and as creators they have changed so much from their late 90's/early 2000s style I don't think they could even plumb that deep anymore for the pure, unvarnished soul-wrenching angst they were putting out. You have to go deep to get to that level and I don't blame them for being so tired and burned out because of that manga that they wouldn't WANT to have to go back to that headspace in order to write it. To be fair it's been a HOT minute since I read any CLAMP manga, pretty much not since Tsubasa so I dunno where they are landing on the angst levels these days when it comes to their manga.

It just blows my mind they're actually doing this after literally 20+ years. And how did I not hear a peep about this? Next you're gonna tell me Minekura Kazuya is writing more Saiyuki Reload Blast is complete....actually I just googled and apparently, it IS COMPLETE?!?

X: The Movie review

I barely use tumblr but I figured I should repost my review of the X movie from Letterboxd since more people will care about it here and I’ve been thinking about it nonstop since last night. I wrote this with people unfamiliar with the movie/manga/tv show in mind so it has a lot of explanations in it.

If I were to describe X/1999 in one word, it would be "frustrating". This movie gets almost everything right in terms of animation, music, and direction from Rintaro. However, none of this matters because it fails utterly in terms of plot.

X/1999 is based on the manga of the same name by the legendary CLAMP. Beginning serialization in 1992, it is famous for being on hiatus since 2003 and not having an ending. The manga is about 14 people called the dragons of heaven and the dragons of earth, as they battle to either save or destroy Earth for the coming apocalypse in 1999. The protagonist is Shirou Kamui, who must choose a side to lead. In 1996, a film adaptation was released and boy, it does not work.

The main problem of the film is the fact that, at it's core, X is an epic scale story. It has 14 characters to follow and a large storyline, which just cannot be told within the 100 minutes given. The film spends the first half setting up all the concepts, and the second half showing rapid fire battles between all characters as they speedrun their lines and themes. Some characters end up for only one scene before disappearing forever, some don't even mention their own names before dying. It's a complete mess. Rintaro and original author Nanase Ohkawa tried their hardest to rewrite the story to fit in film format, but it just inherently does not work with how large scale it is. If I hadn't watched the 2001 TV series a week beforehand, I would have been completely lost.

What makes the plot failures even more frustrating is the fact that everything else is great. The animation is fluid and gorgeous, the backgrounds are wonderfully rendered, the music is fantastic (shout out to X Japan's credits song Forever Love), and the direction is top notch. If it didn't have these aspects, the film would be completely worthless.

I'm sure in 1996, fans of the manga would have been ecstatic to see all their favorite characters animated for the first time (second if you could X2: Double X music video). However, in 2022 with both the TV series and manga being widely available, the film offers little more than pretty visuals to people nowadays. I would NOT recommend watching this as your first X experience whatsoever.

A shame that one poor aspect of the film renders it completely worthless.

TV animation X Unmei no Sentaku or TV animation エックス 運命の選択 is a fighting game based on the X manga series created by Clamp. Developed by Taito Corporation and published by Bandai for the PlayStation, it was released exclusively in Japan on the 22nd of August 2002. 

X Unmei no Sentaku features a story mode that is set during the events of the Anime series as well as a versus mode. Fights take place in a cube arena with the full area of the cube usable during fights; the cube's walls can also be employed during fights.
