@enigmaticxbee an aesthetically pleasing and neatly organized rewatch blog that is packed with great content, including excellent fic rec lists categorized by season, story type, trope, and more. Each episode guide sometimes features related fic recs.

@thatfragilecapricorn30 posts one fic rec every Friday, accompanied by a nice writeup.

@randomfoggytiger curates many fic rec lists sorted by often fun and creative categories.

@cecilysass has a google doc titled "fics I love", which is a fantastic fic list categorized by story type, complete with thoughtful blurbs. She's also shared two episode-related fic rec lists on Tumblr: here and here.

XF Book Club: the best thing ever, an absolute gem that deserves to be preserved for posterity. During its run, 270 fics were recced and discussed in depth here. The community's intelligent and insightful comments on this blog are sometimes even more enjoyable to read than the fics themselves.

I totally forgot to put this on last month’s list! I absolutely loved reading each new chapter every morning at work. I can’t not read a marriage of convenience fic, especially when there’s a baby involved.

💌🦃 Small Lives Awake by Jesemie’s Evil Twin

You know when you read something so sweet, so pure, that you feel like it breaks your heart in the best way? That’s this fic. It’s incredibly fluffy without being cheesy, and the writing style is so elegant.

🏝️👨‍👩‍👦 The Eden Series by Jacque LaVa

Was this the best fic I’ve ever read? No. Was everyone OOC? Definitely. Did I still enjoy it? You bet. I cannot resist the siren call of a survival fic, an amnesia fic, or a kidfic, and this had all three.

👰‍♀️🤵‍♂️ The Marriage Spectacular by @cecilysass

I’ve never met a cecilysass fic I didn’t like, and this was no exception. Fake relationship my beloved! Only one bed my beloved! Mulder and Scully being idiots in love my beloved! Absolutely delightful. 10/10, no notes.

🌀☔️ Hurricane Season by beduini & rah

This fic perfectly captures M&S’s “we’re completely and utterly devoted to each other and literal soulmates yet we still doubt our place in each other’s lives and we never actually talk about it” dynamic that we know and love. It takes place when William is a few months old and they’re still trying to define their relationship. I loved it SO MUCH!

(hmu for an epub — the chapters are long, which makes it easy to lose your place if you don’t finish the chapter in one sitting)

❄️✈️ WHITEOUT by EvanBlack

A classic “Mulder and Scully get in a plane crash and have to survive until help arrives” story. (You all know by now how much I love a survival fic!)

I absolutely adored the dynamic between them in this one. They’re down SO bad for each other, and it shows. I especially loved the beginning when they’re both wishing they were sitting next to each other so they could hold hands. That’s the good stuff right there!

🛁🧪 Antidote by Rachel Howard and Karen Rasch

Mulder and Scully investigate an unknown contagion in a remote town. You can probably guess what happens from there.

This was the perfect road trip read! Engaging and exciting without being too plot-heavy.

The most delectable pregnancy fluff with a dash of smut and a healthy serving of Mulder and Scully figuring out their relationship.

I cannot say enough good things about this fic. It’s definitely a new addition to the Holy Grail list.

It’s a casefic, but it doesn’t feel like a casefic…more like an exploration of magic and family and love. With its spooky small-town gothic vibe and emphasis on powerful women and strange houses and ancient magic, it reminds me a lot of my favorite book series, The Raven Cycle. (If you liked this fic, you should go read TRC!)

This fic has layers and nuance and themes and motifs and gorgeous metaphors and one incredibly hot scene that ticked all my boxes. Even the OCs are rich and compelling. I would read a whole series set in this universe!

💥🚗 Goshen by Bonetree

Emily angst plus survival plus tending to each other’s injuries plus hurt/comfort? Yes please! I love it when I find a fic that seems to be created in a lab just for me.

(After reading the summaries of the following installments, I’m not quite sure if they’re really my thing. Has anyone read the rest of the series? Did you like it?)

👦🏻🦊 A Boy and His Fox by 6hoursgirl

Mulder and Scully “platonically” coparent their son. Mulder learns what it means to be a dad. Pure, unadulterated fluff! If you like kidfics, this one is a must-read.

📚👩‍⚕️ Heuvelmans’ On the Track by The_Mythopeodic

This fic is a fandom classic, and I can definitely see why. The author uses language in unexpected and interesting ways, which is not something you see very often in fic.

I tend to go for “popcorn” fics that are addictive and easy to binge. This one is more like a hearty slab of meat. Both types are good in their own way, but this fic made me work for it.

Anyway, I got a bit frustrated with myself around the halfway mark and kept having to reread passages a few times to truly understand what’s going on. I lamented that I needed a reading guide like they used to give you in English class.

After putting it aside for a few days, I came back and DEVOURED the second half. I don’t want to spoil anything, but if you’ve read it, you know what I’m talking about. I loooooved seeing Scully be resourceful and scrappy and capable, and the epilogue is incredible. I’m glad I pushed through!

🪡🌨️ Skamania County by Sarie_Fairy

This is actually the second time I’ve read this one, which I didn’t realize until near the end when I tried to leave kudos, haha. Anyway, I loved it both times! It has everything that makes survival fics so enticing: a nice trip to the woods that quickly goes wrong, one person hiding their life-threatening injury from the other, the intimacy of tending to their wounds, cuddling (naked) for warmth, and finally resolving that UST. Chef’s kiss!

🧙‍♀️🔭 The Mars Differential by @asteraceae-blue

This one is a WIP, and I cannot wait for the rest! It’s an intriguing casefile with plenty of msr.

I also read a bunch of @o6666666’s fics thanks to this masterlist that made its way around recently!

They are the master of writing fic that hurts so good. This IVF arc one might be my favorite, along with this season 9 one that squeezed my heart like a stress ball.

20 Fanfic Questions

Thanks for the tag (days and days ago now) @randomfoggytiger.

1. How many works do you have on AO3? 21 as of today, which is kind of wild. (I have some on Gossamer, too, because: old.)

2. What's your total AO3 words count?306,501. Working on another longer-ish one that will bump that up.

3. What fandoms do you write for?The X-Files by and large. One time I wrote a fic for a very popular fandom of the 00s I never actually posted, and now I feel differently about that fandom and never will. I can imagine a world where I might write for another fandom, but I am pretty XF-centric right now.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?Chicken Dinner, Pause, The Boy on the Beach, The Kaleidoscope, Unobserved.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?I do respond to comments, but not all the time. I get behind in responding, and then I have to not respond to any of them to make it consistent, if that makes any sense at all? (Because someone might wonder—why did she respond to that comment and not to mine?) I know, I know, I'm sorry.  I honestly love every single comment, and I prefer to respond to them. When I have my life together, I have had great conversations in comments before. 

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?As I read over my work, I have not done a lot of angsty endings, although I have plenty of angst. I have a very old fic written the summer between season 7 and 8 called Opposition and Synthesis (one of many post-Requiem fics) that is on Gossamer and ends angsty, but that’s not a widely read piece any more, lol. I would say of my more recent work, probably Ice Water ends the angstiest. 

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I have lots of happy endings. I couldn’t say.

8. Do you get hate on fics?Nooooo, not per se. I have gotten very critical comments from people who are disappointed by the turn the fic has taken, or comments taking issue with my interpretation of canon. I remember someone didn’t like the idea of Scully going on dates at all in the break-up era, and they complained about that in the comments on End of Story. That’s a difference in headcanon, so sometimes it’s frustrating when people feel theirs should prevail. But I haven’t really received what I would call “hate” exactly (so far) for which I am grateful.

9. Do you write smut. If so what kind? I have, but it’s not my favorite. It’s completely hypocritical of me because I like to read it, but it’s not my most comfortable area of writing. I think it’s a problem of not being terribly visual.  I do feel sometimes it’s necessary to a story, and my betas peer pressure me into including it sometimes, too.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?I haven’t. 

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? No.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes. People translated some of my fic into Russian one time.

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before? No. I would like to do that. 

14. What's your all-time favourite ship? Mulder and Scully. Duh.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? Okay, I have told this story a few times, so bear with me if you’ve heard it, but I had a WIP I hadn’t finished between 2000-ish and 2021. That’s right. Twenty years. It would be very reasonable to assume I was never finishing that fic, as the first two parts had been up on Gossamer for years and I had not been seen or heard from in decades. Then during the pandemic I came back to thinking about the show, and when I came back to the fandom there were oddly people who still knew my fic. And I remembered this WIP and still had some of the ancient Word files of later chapters on my Google drive, so I decided to make a little project of finishing it and posting it to AO3. And now it’s finished. (It’s called Bloodline. You can read it and see if you can tell where the narrative is written 20 years apart.)  So I don’t believe in doubting you’ll ever finish WIPs. Never say never.

16. What are your writing strengths? I think dialogue. I would not have said plotting when I restarted this hobby, but I do think I have gotten better at plotting. And I do plan things out. I do a lot of research.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Smut. Logistics in moving around in general – like when someone is standing or sitting and how they move from one place in the room to the other. I write in present tense a lot but past tense sometimes, so sometimes I mess up tense absent-mindedly. I’m also a very slow writer who rewrites a lot. When I see people get a prompt and then post the fic a few days later, my mind is blown, because I could absolutely never. People who do Fictober also have my deep respect, because that would be a very, very hard thing for me.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I would only do it very sparingly or with extensive help, as I’m not a fluent speaker in anything but English. I could probably write a little French or Spanish dialogue to understand (I think I did write a tiny bit of Spanish dialogue in We’re Not Here To Get Involved In Personal Problems). But I would really want a more fluent speaker to look it over if I were doing any significant amount.

19. First fandom you wrote for? The X-Files, really, if you don’t count that middle school Victoria Holt romance novel sequel I wrote for English class.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written? I’m going to choose three, okay? Is that egotistical? I’m sorry if so. I’ve always really liked Jackson Van De Kamp’s Not-So-Final Repose. It’s not perfect, but it’s quirky and fantastical and sentimental and has a special place in my heart. It’s also more like a play, which is probably one of the genres my writing is most influenced by. I also really like The Boy on the Beach, which took a year to write and involved so, so much research, which was fun and a positive experience. Finally, I like How To Eat Pleasant Holiday Meals With Co-Workers, which was a prompt for a holiday exchange (early MSR Thanksgiving) that I expanded into a series of Thanksgivings over the years. I ended up really enjoying imagining each of those Thanksgivings, especially the last one. That last one is my forever post-revival headcanon now lol.

Favorite time of year: for the temps and the aesthetics, it’s the 4th quarter. Fall. But I work in a retail adjacent field and this time of year is like a suckerpunch to the face every week so it’s also the time of year I dread the most. Emotionally, spring is getting to be my favorite time of year because spring break means a 10 day vacation.

Comfort foods: Shari’s chocolate chip cookies (made with see’s baking chocolates), homemade fried tacos, mashed potatoes, my moms chicken enchiladas, in n out, the pollo asada tacos from Casa Del Rey.

Do you collect anything? Dogs, apparently. Fandoms. Briard stuff. Moving a couple years ago forced me to really whittle down my collections so now I have a few prizes pieces. My life magazines signed by ginger Rogers. My picture with Isabella Rossellini. Shari’s Moolly. The travel scrapbooks I’ve made. Photos. Recipes. Quilts made by Shari’s mom. An afghan made by my grandma. A painting of me by my nana.

Favorite drinks: Coke Zero, iced tea, pepsi, frozen margaritas, mimosas.

Favorite music artists: the other day I had a playlist going at work from my iTunes and it was… eclectic is a mild word. I mean you’ve got your typical divas. Reba, Dolly, Cher. An outrageous number of musicals are represented: wicked, Hamilton, frozen, beauty and the beast, the Addams family, hairspray, Sweeney Todd, Les Mis, Cabaret. And then the rest is the most insane amalgamation of music mostly culled from movie and television soundtracks that are inexorably tied to that media in my mind forever. And postmodern jukebox.

Current favorite songs: oh good grief. Nothing But Diamonds by ATO. Now by the carpenters (shut up). The Sound of Silence (disturbed). Truth Hurts (lizzo). Black Sheep (gin wigmore). Once upon a dream (Lana del rey). March March (the chicks). Chandelier (puddles pity party).

Favorite fics: well obviously Harts All A Flutter by @andallthatmerrymishigas which is single-handedly keeping me going through this grueling holiday season. But also her Downton stuff. And Blake stuff. I’m a fangirl sue me. And then…do you know how much fanfic I’ve read?? Alias, XF, MFMM, tdbm. I have even started scanning svu/OC stuff.

Favorite video games: bubble bobble (NES), Soulblazer (SNES), Mario bros 3 (NES), Skee-ball plus (iOS), Bioshock Infinite (PlayStation 3), Mario kart (wii).

Revival Rewatch - Fic Recs

Need something to read to pass the time waiting for date night to start while your (past - present? - future) partner tears his (your?) It’s Après Ski, Scully by @agirlcallednarelle - Mulder takes Scully skiing for New Year's in 2018 to help them both move on from the events of the year. Some angst, some fluff, some closure. This is what I want for them post-revival.

The Rains of Bimini by @slippinmickeys - How could he have known, when she walked into his office with her bad suit and her earnest smile, that she would be the last person he would ever love? You don’t always realize the momentous things as they’re happening, and so he’d needled her a little; without any thought to his lost sister, he’d used his snottiest big brother voice and accused her of spying. Her. His last, best love. Set far in the future, it’s just lovely.

S10 Rewatch - MSR

I’m not even sure where to start here because all of the writers except CC seemed to pretty much ignore the break up, and CC had no interest in really exploring why they broke up or what it would mean to start working together again post break up. I certainly would have been on board with the show exploring the fissures in their relationship - if it actually wanted to take seriously their personal and shared traumas and how terrible they’ve historically been at communicating. (Although I don’t think they would have even needed to break up if that was the aim - people can be in a relationship and have issues and work through those issues you know! Might actually be interesting to watch!)

But all we get is one line by a random character about how Scully left because of Mulder’s endogenous depression?? Bullshit. And once they start working together again they’re fine. If there was supposed to be some kind of arc this season where they come back to each other (without working through any of the issues that tore them apart apparently) then I guess it all happened when Scully agreed to go back the X-Files in the first episode? Because literally nothing in the rest of the season would have to be different if they had never broken up… Does the Mulder who shows up - to sit with her at her mother’s hospital bed and hold her as she cries and go back to work with her even though it’s a terrible fucking idea and sit and listen as she grieves the answers she’ll never get about her mother and her son - seem like a man dealing with his ex who he still works with or like a man showing up for and supporting the most important person in his life, the love of his life, no matter how complicated the current status of their relationship?

So what was the fucking point of the break up this season? To get back to that Schrodinger’s box place the original series lingered in for far too long where they both were and were not in a relationship as long as the show didn’t directly acknowledge it? Fic: Weight of the World

A/N: I wrote this within a day with very little editing. I guess bad anxiety and insomnia make great muses for writing. Sorry for any typos. No beta as I rushed to write this. Post IWTB before the separation in season 10. P.S. Smutish if not smutlight. Just a heads up.

Scully was not one to let her anxiety or nerves show. 

As a child, she kept her emotions inward and was a private person. In college and med school, she kept her head down to excel at the top of her class. At the FBI academy, she stood head to head with her male cohort and continued to excel with her own merits. At Quantico, no one questioned Dr. Scully. It wasn’t until Mulder that something changed in her. At first, she tried to show him that she was no spy and she was more than capable. But things evolved and shifted and she was his equal. She was simply Scully and she found her emotional armor chinked away over the years. She could finally be herself with him. Years in the field battling alien conspiracies, years on the run, and years living together had not changed them. So she thought.

Ever since Mulder regained his freedom after they helped the FBI, Scully began to see him less and less. A part of her was happy that he was no longer a prisoner but another part of her envied him. It was as if him being a fugitive was the only thing that kept him from running off and forgetting about her.

There it was. That feeling of being left behind. That anxiety that had been growing over the past month that she was struggling to keep hidden away. It gnawed at her and ached like an insufferable pain that could not be cured. She found herself waking more and more in the night. Mulder’s insomnia had somehow transmitted to her once he regained his freedom and she began to feel trapped. Work no longer held the same enjoyment it once did. She started to come back to an empty home with Mulder finally chasing down leads and meeting the contacts from his MUFON forums in person down in Richmond.

When Scully was first assigned to be his partner, it took months to keep him from running off without her. Now, sixteen years later, it was happening all over again.

Despite all this, everything imploded after tonight. She came home to an empty house that evening after a disastrous dinner at her mother’s house. Bill announced in anger over Tara shouting at him, Matthew trying to hush his younger siblings, that Bill was being transferred to Germany to get away from all the family BS. His words, not hers. Charlie and his wife were shouting right back. Maggie Scully caught hopelessly in the middle trying to placate her feuding sons. And that left Dana Scully, somehow silently caught up in the family fight, alone (because Mulder was elsewhere), listening to the random barb dropped in regards to her life choices. Her mother watched helplessly as her sons and their families left in a whirlwind and the sad smile Maggie Scully gave her remaining daughter, wishing her a good evening and not to worry. That night just made her feel even more alone.

By the time she drove back to Virginia, Mulder’s truck was still missing in the driveway. Their house was eerily silent. And that was what caused the dam to break. The ache in her chest, the anxiety that made her want to claw at her skin, came out with silent tears. 

She climbed the old wooden steps, the third step from the top creaking loudly, as she ascended to disappear into their bedroom. She thought about maybe taking a bath but decided it was too much effort. Instead, she changed into a large t-shirt and soft cotton pajama pants and crawled into their bed. Scully pulled a frayed cotton quilt around her like a cocoon and just let herself cry.

A physician in the 18th century would have diagnosed her was pangs in the chest. Pangs. Suffering. To be sorrowful. Was she said.? Or was it the anxiety? She balled her fists, her nails digging into the palms of her hands, as she tried to force herself to breathe. This was not something Dana Scully did. Her rational mind recognized the signs of an anxiety attack but she was also angry and hurt. Why did she feel this way? What the hell was causing it? She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, her heart drumming in her ears, and counted silently to four. She tried to ease her breath out slowly but it came out too quickly.

She couldn’t breathe. In a last-ditch effort, she hugged a pillow to her chest and willed herself to steady her breath. This didn’t happen to her. She didn’t panic. She didn’t have anxiety. She was stronger than that.

When she opened her eyes, Scully didn’t know how much time had passed when she heard the downstairs door slam shut and Mulder’s voice calling for her. Did she fall asleep? How much time had passed? Was it already night?

Scully willed herself to move, to get out of bed, and pretend everything was a-okay. That’s what Mulder expected. That is what the rest of the world expected. But her body rebelled and she stayed right in bed. She could hear his heavy footsteps coming up the stairs. That loud third step from the top sounded like an alarm. 

Panic. 

Fear. 

Pretend you're asleep, she thought.

“Scully?” His voice was soft. “You awake?” She didn’t respond, trying to keep the ruse going. But something must’ve given it away. “Scully, have you been crying?” Another pause. “I know you aren’t asleep.”

“Fine,” she muttered, twisting her back to him.

“That doesn’t sound like your regular fine. How was your mother’s?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

Typically that was enough and he would leave her alone but not this time. She felt the bed dip and he sat on his side so he could look at her. Scully huffed and turned her back to him so she faced the window.  “You’re cute when you are angry but it’s painful to see you hurting.”

“I’m not hurting.”

“You know, once upon a time, I used to a profiler at the FBI and they used to pay me to do this work,” Mulder joked.

“Stop profiling me then.”

“It was a joke. Scully, look at me. Tell me what’s wrong.”

Mulder traced her cheek and she closed her eyes, feeling fresh tears. He gently peeled back the blanket and traced her arm. “Nothing’s wrong.” She bawled her fist again in frustration. “Mulder, please. I’m fine.”

He ignored her and pried open her fist to take her hand. Like a small child, she tried to pull away. “This isn’t you,” he whispered. “Scully, what is it? Tell me what’s wrong.”

She shook her head defiantly. He took a deep breath and curled up behind her and drew the old quilt she had been using around them. “We don’t have to talk if you don’t want to,” he whispered. “We can just lay here.”

At that moment, whether it was just the sensation of Mulder surrounding her, not being alone, or both, she cried harder. He pressed his hand to her chest over her heart. “I’m here. Scully, I can’t help you if you don’t tell me. What happened at your mother’s tonight? Is it work? Is it something else? More than once you pulled me together, let me return the favor, but I can’t if you don’t tell me.”

One of the longest minutes of her life passed before she answered. “No, I’m not okay, Mulder.”

“Tell me.”

“Work. My family. Us. Me. Everything.”

She wished the bed would open up to a hole to China so that she could fall into it. Maybe from China, she could travel to Australia and live a different life. “Everything,” he repeated.

“Everything.”

He took a deep breath and her anxiety dissipated slightly feeling him around her, safe and secure. “Well,” he sighed.  “Let’s begin with your mother’s dinner.”

She laughed bitterly. “A clusterfuck. I don’t even remember what the argument was about. Charlie and his wife stormed off. Bill started yelling as Tara stood by terrified. He’s getting transferred to Germany. And me? It was like I didn’t even exist.”

He nuzzled behind her ear. “I don’t know about that but I’m sure it’s going to be okay.”

“I don’t think so,” she whispered. 

“That doesn’t sound like you.”

“I don’t know anymore, Mulder.”

“Okay. What about work?”

She shrugged weakly. “Okay. The thing I have avoided: us.”

“It’s nothing, Mulder.”

“It’s something to cause whatever this is,” he whispered.

In the silence, they lay together. Scully closed her eyes trying to memorize the sensations of being held by him and just feeling safe for a moment. “Do you remember at the beginning of our partnership? When you tried to always run off without me?”

“I didn’t trust you then,” he whispered. “But yes, I remember.”

“It feels like that again.”

Scully’s confession striked him as odd. He rubbed her arms and kissed her again. “What do you mean?”

“It sounds selfish.”

“Try me.”

She shifted and turned to face him. “When you were home,” she started, “well, still a fugitive...I always knew you would be here. Maybe I am being selfish but I miss knowing you are going to be here when I get home. When I come home, the house is empty. Lonely. We talk but we don’t talk. Does that make sense? It feels like we are living two separate lives. You are running off without me.”

“I thought you wanted to keep the darkness out of our life.”

“Not at the expense of losing you, Mulder.”

He closed his eyes and bent his forehead to rest against hers. “If I could take away this anxiety and pain that you have, I would in a heartbeat. You aren’t going to lose me. It’s going to be okay. You have to trust me.”

“You know what I miss most of all, Mulder? This. Just this moment with us.” She sighed as if a great pain had been relieved as he began to run his hand up and down her arm, over her face, and then under her shirt. She closed her eyes. “At the end of the day, it’s just us against the world.”

“Hasn’t it always been like that, Scully?” He rolled her gently onto her back and kissed her gently. “You’re starting to relax.”

She closed her eyes despite herself. “You were always the best drug. But this feels like a band-aid at best. I’m still scared. I am worried.”

“Don’t be. We have a life together.”

“Do we?” She opened her eyes and blinked lazily. “Mulder?”

“It seems we both need a reminder.”

Scully relished his touch as he pulled her shirt above her head and began to kiss her breast bone. She relaxed into the pillows and closed her eyes praying that nothing would take him again from her. The anxiety she had festering for the past month vanished under his lips and she shivered. “Mulder,” she murmured. 

Her fingers raked through his hair slowly as he found her lips again and, unrushed, enjoyed his ministrations. This was something that a couple did after many years of being together. Unrushed and unhurried, they relished their closeness. For once, their unspoken communication reigned supreme and she pushed against him. Scully felt her anxiety falling away. 

“This isn’t a band-aid,” he whispered between kisses. “This is real.” His hand snaked downwards and she became jelly under him. “All this is real. If the world feels like it is shattering around us, we’ll still have us, Scully.”

Scully found it odd that her body felt so ready after so little. Her anxiety must've run her down to nothing. “Shirt off,” she ordered softly.

He arched his bag as she tore off his shirt with practiced ease. Skin against skin, they sighed in contentment. “All or nothing, Scully.”

What an odd turn of events, she thought. A simple reunion of their bodies and spirits and all was well. Was that how it worked? As she let her thoughts drift, Mulder stripped away the remains of their clothes. With a few quick strokes, he entered and joined her. Any doubt and anxiety Scully had left evaporated in a fiery death as she hugged him close and wrapped her legs around his waist. It did not take much as both cried out in unison and sheer emotion ebbed away. He held her close and continued to kiss her leisurely. “You don’t have to be Atlas, Scully. Let me be your Heracles and carry the weight of the world for a while.”

Scully smiled. She let her anxiety go and decided, yet again, to just enjoy the moment. It may be just a band-aid but Mulder was the best drug. “Love you,” she whispered sleepily.

“We’ll be okay, Scully. Just you see.” 

Mulder’s voice was heavy with sleep. Emotionally exhausted, she let herself forget and sleep as he kissed her lovingly and whispered they were forever.

Because Scully and Mulder did need to meet Colton again.  ATCWM ‘verse.

Scully’s reaching for the coffee pot when she realizes someone else is also reaching for it.  She draws back politely.  Bullpen coffee isn’t worth a fight.  She doesn’t really need to be more awake right now.  She just wanted something warm.  The heating in the basement is being repaired, and her sweater only does so much.  

“Oh,” she says when she actually looks at the face.  “Colton.”

He looks up.  “Dana?  I haven’t seen you in years.”

“Decades,” she says with a tight grin that shows her canines.  She hasn’t missed him.

“How’ve you been?” he asks.

She considers the range of her options.  Abduction.  Cancer.  Loss of a daughter she didn’t know she had.  Infertility.  Near loss of Mulder.  Loss of Mulder.  Death of Mulder.  Birth of a miraculous son.  Loss of a miraculous son.  Gain and loss of two new partners.  Years on the run.  Attempted redemption.  Breakup.  Therapy.  Renewal of relationship.  Second chance at redemption.  Mother’s death.  More therapy.

“Fine,” she says.  “You?”

“Oh, still busting my ass,” he says, sticking one hand in his pocket.  

“Still not assistant director,” she says, feigning politeness.

“Well, looks like you aren’t either,” he says.

“No,” she agrees.  “We took a leave of absence.”

“We?” he asks.

“Oh, yes,” she says, gesturing.  Mulder’s clearly been lurking; he saunters over and leans over her shoulder.  “We took a leave of absence for, oh, almost a decade, but we were asked to reconsider.  We’ve reopened the X-Files.  You remember my husband, Mulder.”

“Sure,” Colton says, holding out his hand to shake and grimacing as Mulder squeezes a little too tight.  Scully would roll her eyes, but that’s the only kind of conversation men like Colton seem to understand.  “Wow.  Congrats.  I guess you’re Mrs. Spooky for real.”

“We actually changed our legal names,” Mulder says blandly.

Colton narrows his eyes.  “Yeah, well, good luck, I guess.”

“You too,” Scully says.  “It must be frustrating to climb the ladder all these years and still be on the bottom rung.  Maybe you’ll get your big break soon.”

“I for one found our sabbatical really refreshing,” Mulder says.  “You might consider it.  Right, honey?”

“Definitely,” she says, leaning against him.  “It really put everything in perspective and gave us leverage to negotiate when they asked us back.”

“Wow,” Colton says through gritted teeth.  “Sounds great.”

“Should we step out for coffee, since there’s no more here?” Scully asks Mulder.  

“It’s a date,” Mulder says, smiling at her.  “Stretch our legs, knock out this case.  Third one this week - they just keep piling them on when you’ve got a solve rate like ours.”  He shakes his head regretfully.  “See you later, Colton.  Nice catching up with you.”

“Yeah, great to see you,” Colton says.  He takes a long sip of his coffee.  Scully’s fairly certain he burns his tongue.  She smiles.

“You didn’t have to completely annihilate him,” Mulder murmurs as they walk away.  

“He had it coming,” she tells him.

He whistles in quiet admiration.  “I like this killer instinct of yours.”  

“Thank you,” she says.

“I’d pay money to watch you tear down men brick by brick,” he muses.  “Just one thing, Mrs. Spooky.  We’re not married.”

“Maybe it’s time to change that,” she says.

“What inspired this?” he asks, raising an eyebrow.

She sighs.  “Seeing my mother in the hospital again just reminded me that as it stands, we have no right to see each other.  I’m your doctor, but what if I get sick?  There are too many scenarios, too many factors.  It would make things so much easier if we had legal protections.”

“How romantic,” he murmurs as they walk out of the Hoover Building.

“How’s this for romantic?” she says, and takes his hands.  She uses her grip as leverage as she slowly kneels on the sidewalk, glad she stopped wearing hose sometime in the mid 90s.  “Fox Mulder.  You and I have been through hell and back.  You understand me like no one else has or ever will.  You’re my one in seven billion.  Will you marry me?”

“People are staring, Scully,” he says, amused.

“Let them,” she tells him, gazing into his eyes.  It’s an interesting perspective, one she’s rarely seen outside the bedroom.   

“Is this real?” he asks.

“Mulder, I’m kneeling on a sidewalk in Washington D.C. and it’s almost lunch time,” she tells him.  “There’s no way I would do that if it weren’t serious.”

“You might be a doppelganger,” he says, “but yes, Scully, obviously I’ll marry you.”  He pulls her up and into his arms for a lingering kiss.  She lets herself melt into him.  People around them are applauding.  

“You really gave the tourists a thrill,” he says against her lips.

“As long as I still thrill you,” she says breathlessly.

“You do,” he tells her, and kisses her again.

Mulder/Scully: Partners

“Do you trust him?” one of the local police officers asked. She leaned closer to Scully, her arms crossed and her eyes narrow as she watched Mulder talk with the suspect.

“Of course,” Scully responded without hesitation. “He’s my partner.”

A skeptical smile crossed the officer’s face. “I’ve known cops who didn’t trust their partners.”

“I trust him,” Scully stated with complete conviction. She knew the word partner didn’t hold the same meaning to this officer as it did to her. No one understood the depth that word held for her, not even those who assumed she and Mulder became secret lovers long before their lips ever actually touched. “I trust him more than anyone I’ve ever met or ever will meet.”

“So you two are…”

“Partners.”

The officer sighed. “Yeah, well, I don’t know if I trust your partner not to get us in trouble.”

Scully smiled, telling the officer more than words ever could. She trusted Mulder with her life, with her soul, with everything that mattered to her, but Mulder would invariably walk into trouble with each new case. And so would Scully. fighting for the truth was their united purpose. She had resisted it for so long, but she understood everything now.

Pain is an unavoidable fact of human existence, and Scully couldn’t hide from it anymore. Avoiding pain had left them both hollow, without each other, and without a purpose. Her life would not be her own without risk, without Mulder, without their shared experiences, and she didn’t want a different life, not anymore. They had both grown and learned from their mistakes. After all those years, they finally figured out how to be partners in every aspect of their lives.

Ummmm. This is probably best left to others tbh. Anything I say would probably be based on a fic I read by someone else. 😆

But... Mulder didn't fit in. College was his first real experience with women and of course they manipulated the poor puppy. He was eager to please, errrr.........

Scully was pretty focused on her coursework, of course. I really love the fic where she develops her aim pre-college and then is notorious for her beer pong skills, though 😆 (It's called "She's a Good Shot").

27. List some season 9 MSR headcanons

Um. Well season 9 didn't happen, soooooooo.

I'm working on my AU, so I don’t know if that counts but it involves Mulder not leaving and William not being a superbaby. And of course they don't give him up. That's about all I'll say. Your standard re-write of the worst bits aka most of it. 

(Also I’ve never watched “Jump the Shark” so that ALSO never happened in my universe.)

33. Favorite season finale?

Probably Anasazi because that shit is just fucking amazing. It has everything and Scully is such a badass.

48. Favorite character crossover headcanons?

I don't really do this too much. I love AU's but I have a hard time inserting M&S into stories within other fandoms & other characters.  😫

In these fics Mulder returns post-Requiem in a way that was not depicted in season 8's canon, finding Scully pregnant or already parenting their child. Also, some fics on this list feature Scully returning post-One Breath and have a child involved who is connected to her disappearance.

In these fics someone other than Scully or Reyes is pregnant. Here you can find fics about Kimberly Cook, adult Samantha Mulder, Melissa Scully, Diana Fowley, Marita Covarrubias, Tara Scully, Maggie Scully, Teena Mulder, and Original Characters. Melissa Scully will forever be a personal fave and I think about how they did her dirty every day.

Season 3 honestly bc they both look hot and it contains most of my favorite episodes but honestly sunner ups include 2, 5, and 7.

War of the Coprophages bc jealous and domestic Scully, Ice bc Tension, Bad Blood bc Funny, and Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose bc all of the above.   

16. Favorite character developments for Scully?

Watching her grow in her ability to safely express her emotions, and allowing herself to be more “unbuttoned”. I don’t think she ever feared being emotional, she was just always told to keep that out of her job, but Mulder showed her that by allowing herself to feel emotions she is not less than, but human.

17. Favorite character developments for Mulder?

That bitch needed to learn that his actions have consequences.

Emily. I still write fic about it.

FTF. I honestly am just here for their characters in this one and IWTB is way too heavy.

Honestly its just a whole vibe.

Deadass season one I still think about that and they were still so pure and honestly its what made me keep watching the show.

I have an unhealthy obsession with clean shaven puppy dog Mulder, but I’m more attracted to scruffy Mulder. Weird.

40. How do you feel about the direction Chris Carter takes as the series progresses?

We do not speak of that man in my house.

At age 16, literally a month before they took it off Netflix.

45. Why did you first start watching The X-Files?

Got my heart broke and developed an obsession with a show that has characters I relate to and can project onto as a coping mechanism check!

46. What are your thoughts about extraterrestrial life?

Do I think ET is out there watching us? Maybe. Do I think the universe if far to big to have humanity be the only sentient species in it? Definitely.

What are your favorite types of XF fanfictions? Any favorite tropes or anything? 

K:  My favorites are FamilyFic,AU,AH,Fluff and Smut. My favorite tropes are Undercover,First Time, One Bed. I also love fic where Emily is Mulder’s biological daughter. 

What got you into TXF fanfiction? Do you remember your first one or your introduction? 

K:  Wanting what I didn’t get from the show for Mulder and Scully. My first one gosh it was so long ago but it was definitely on Fanfiction.net 

Can you recommend three (3) of your favorite X-Files fanfictions and describe why you like them?

1) After She Left by AGoodWoman because for me season 10 was a mess and Sj is righting that and it’s such a good fic she’s awesome and one of my favorite MSR writers.

What would your dream fic be? 

K:  My dream fic would be an in character alternate history/universe  fic of MSR with all three of their children with lots of smut included like one of my favorite historical romance novels.
