X-Files Collector's Edition: Dad!Mulder, His "Mini Me"s, and Sports

Mulder deserved to bond with his "mini me"s over any sport under the sun. Here are a few fics that do just that.

David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson behind the scenes of The X-Files

I don't know why I do this but whenever I'm engaging with almost any type of art, like episodes/movies, or writing/fanfictions, or cartoons/drawings, or even like if I see someone who knit/crocheted something!, I always think of the act of it getting made? I always imagine the actors learning their lines and messing up and writers sitting in front of a computer typing and deleting text and thinking of scenes in their daily lives and artists focusing in front of a canvas and drawing or painting for hours and picking the right colors and people sitting there frogging and reknitting and shopping for yarn and setting their projects down aside

like, it feels like a double edged sword. on one hand I see behind the work and try to always think of the people behind it because I know it's time consuming to make art, and on the other hand it gives me all these silly rules and expectations I adopt for myself because I assume you have to behave a certain way to make art (and I'm burnt out rn and haven't made any type of art in weeks)

I took some time to look through your blog posts to put my thoughts in order. You offer some good perspectives.

Over the years, Gillian has somewhat distanced herself from Xfiles, but she does see the benefit in coming back because she knows that there is a draw to Scully and Mulder. They are the interest to the show, but her story was always screwed over. I think that pissed her off because she was not truly seen as a person but just as an object but Mulder wasn't. Why wasn't his fertility or utility as a man played with? She might have mixed feelings because it brings her joy of success and some good times but sadness of the creeps she had to deal with.

Then, couple this with what was happening behind the scenes, Gillian, as a woman, might not want to be in that environment again. The men are/were pigs. Perhaps she does care for the characters of Scully and Mulder and the actors, but how can she play out the story line when it's a joke when you know what the people really think about women?

I love the Xfiles, but I prefer that she doesn't go back after what I have learned from the different blogs of Duchovny's grooming of a young girl. It is hard for this viewer to separate the two because it obviously affected Anderson since she has not participated in a lot of comic cons with other cast members over the years.

Bottom line, the less we know about actors' personal lives the better because we can then truly enjoy the characters. I would like Anderson to be able to give a frank F all interview where she airs all her grievances because many female viewers feel aggrieved to what the male writers (I suppose this is primarily Carter) did TO Scully.

Exactly. I could have done without knowing about DDs sugarbaby and then seeing that awkward bed talk about dating younger ppl. Definitely ruined the scene.

I’m good with no more XF because I’ll always have season 1-9 and two good movies 🤗

I get what you say about Gillian and I can agree on some points but to me she also shat on Scully enough and when it’s convenient for her she pulls the XF money grab card. She does not need to respect CC or DD or the writing of the show but imo Scully is not boring etc just because she isn’t talking about sex all the time( Jean) or runs a round like a boss bitch banging fellow colleagues (Stella). if GA is frustrated fine but leave it with the ppl who frustrate you and not a character who is loved exactly because the way she is. And don’t get me started on the pregnancy BS with both Scully and Jean 🤦🏽‍♀️.

The good thing is GA gets enough projects and has enough exposure without XF which is sth you can’t say for everyone from the OG cast. She does not need DD or XF. For DD imo that’s another case but it’s also due to his lack of proper Social media representation. Again a whole other topic 😅

Paparazzi, Celebrity Deals, and David Duchovny

Paparazzi is part and parcel with celebrity culture. Celebrities themselves likely have to deal with harassment, boundary stomping, and any and all pap craziness as regularly as their juice cleanse bowel movements.

However. All celebrities have contractual obligations with at least one paparazzi company, picking and choosing which locations and events they want leaked to the press; and when' and how "edited" the final results will appear.

It's not so much manipulation (though it can be) as strategy: they want to live their lives on their own terms but also know the health of their projects and "brand" depends on a certain degree of public exposure and opinion. Therefore, celebrities in New York-- as mentioned in the video-- and, more relevant to this post, California exist mostly unmolested, surfacing for promotional circuits or other public and social events. Paps who harass, stalk, or follow a celebrity, unwanted, are generally bottom feeders who are too foolish or greedy to let a quick opportunity pass in exchange for, perhaps, a deal with that celebrity's team later down the line.

In David Duchovny's case, his brother summed up the situation quite succinctly here: "We'll go out to dinner, and out from the weeds pops up some paparazzi guy shooting away, y'know. Dave'll be like-- he'll know his name, he'll go, 'Look, Warren, I thought we talked about this: you can shoot me surfing, you can shoot me on the beach, which I let you do, but I'm here with my wife-- you said you wouldn't.' 'Oh, I gotta make a living, gotta make a living!'-- and then they, like, disappear like little rodents under the bush...."

Therein, Danny delineated between cooperative pap shots and vulturistic opportunism-- two very different beasts. (Beast One keeps their distance, takes their shots, and splits the proceeds between their company and the celebrity. Beast Two tails after and mouth breathes in the celebrity's vicinity, opening themselves up to harassment charges or future opportunity loss. And if Beast Two is making money off of informants, the celebrity will be able to quickly narrow down who in their close circle has tipped off the paps.)

It's part of the business; and probably a contributing factor to David expressing "shame" or embarrassment over being an actor: his work is an artistic expression of himself, yes; but as an actor turned director and author and musician, he won't be able to escape "selling" himself, to an extent, to stay relevant (a frustration he's echoed since the early days.)

This post wasn't written out of judgment, just exploration. After all, even girl scouts have to make numbers.

I am neutral minus on Castiel, don’t hate him, but I really think the show suffered for keeping him around so long. He shouldn’t have come back after S5. In fact, angels in general fucking sucked and should have been given way less screen time. Thoughts?

I agree but somebody (Robert Singer?  Sera Gamble?) decided that SPN needs a race that is “Lawful Evil” to be antagonist for the Winchester.

The Borgs of Star Trek: Next Generation, the Dominion of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , the Cyberman of Doctor Who are examples of “Lawful Evil” that believe their species and society is perfect and therefore justified in doing anything to survive and forcibly “welcome” others into it.  

Since these arch-nemesis tend to last the entire length of the series, the Villain  Decay Trope inevitably sets in.  The Borg could never be truly defeated because they always acted in perfect synchronicity, they were truly terrifying until they went from a once-a-season menace to a routine annoyance that could be defeated by a lone lost starship. 

After season 7, there really was no purpose for Castiel anymore and hence his demotion to plot device and the constant unexplained power downgrades.  My headcanon is the Winchesters kept him around for his healing powers - free health care.

I thought the BMOL would be the new Lawful Evil and Mick Davis will be the new Castiel as someone who questions their organization ideologies and methods.  But just like the Campbell family storyline, somebody behind the scene killed that potential.  It could be as simple as  number crunchers didn’t see convention money potential for BMOL, or a rando producer didn’t like BMOL and killed the storyline, or Robert Singer wanting to keep his buddy, Misha, employed.

Producers like Singer are not unique, they’re always propping up their pets.  The brilliant Sleepy Hallow was destroyed because the producers had a crush on Katia Winter and promoted her to female lead by taking Katrina out of the spirit world and sidelining Abbie Mills - this would be like XFiles taking Mulder’s sister out of the starlight world and completely sidelining Dana Scully

I realized that sometimes if I’m really stuck on an idea, I just need to make an Oc instead of a reader insert. As mentioned yesterday I’m looking at my drafts. I have many of them and would like to knock that number down. Anyway, two of them I’ve had for a while. I started playing around with both ideas this week (behind the scenes) and nothing stuck or felt right until I changed reader to an Oc. It’s like a back to my roots thing.

I’ve always been an Oc writer. I only started doing reader inserts when I signed up here as a writer. I only used this site as a reader for many many years (on and off). The closest I got to writing ‘reader’ was during my xfile days in HS but I straight up made on older Oc for myself, so it wasn’t really an RC.

Anyway, I rejoined tumblr in late 2019 as a reader once more, but didn’t share any writing until early 2020. Once I started sharing, I noticed my Oc stuff was getting ignored/no reads. That’s when I gave the very popular ‘reader’ inserts a shot.

I don’t mind doing reader inserts but it def takes a back seat to creating characters, which is my first (and more passionate) love. Creating a character from scratch will always be my first instinct. I have a feeling that most of these drafts, whenever I get to them, will be Ocs.
