Honestly, working on my novel was one of the biggest and most helpful things.

But! Important addendum, it was working on it *in community*. I was *terrified* of talking about it, because when my depression was bad, I could only perceive my efforts as deficient. So telling other people? About this thing I was working so hard on but that was still awful and trash? I'd already called myself every nasty name, I couldn't bear telling my friends and risk hearing that from them.

Except they were never anything but incredibly supportive for one. And for another, it was the depression telling me what I made was trash, which I only discovered after pushing myself to talk about it.

Talking to my friends about my writing helped me reclaim the joy of writing when I thought I had lost it forever, when I had constant panic attacks whenever I sat down to try and write. Now I was pushing myself to write, not just because I loved it and was frustrated it had changed from a source of joy to a source of pain, but because any advance I made in what I wrote was a chance to talk to my friends afterward about it and feel genuinely, truly happy.

My therapist just told me my problem is that I need to write more fanfiction.
